NAF INFLICTS HEAVY CASUALTIES ON TERRORISTS IN AIR STRIKES CONDUCTED AT TUMBUN HAMMA IN NORTHERN BORNO STATE The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has inflicted heavy casualties on Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP) elements in devastating air strikes conducted at Tumbun Hamma on the fringes of Lake Chad yesterday, 24 May 2019. The attack was conducted following credible intelligence reports indicating that the terrorists, who had fled the series of air strikes conducted by Nigerian, Nigerien and Chadian Air Forces, around the Malkanori-Tumbun Rego general axis of northern Borno State, had converged in Tumbun Hamma. The attack was preceded by series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions which confirmed heavy presence of terrorists in several structures, along with their logistics items, spread across the small settlement. Accordingly, the ATF scrambled an Alpha Jet aircraft to attack the location, recording a successful direct hit in the centre of the target area leading to the neutralization of several terrorists as well as the destruction of their structures and logistics. The NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its operations to completely degrade the terrorists in the Northeast. ugo4u:All light military "ATV" don't offer much or any protection. The ATV provides individual, all-terrain mobility to deployed Special Operations Forces in austere locations and across a myriad of special operations missions. The vehicles are extremely flexible and internally transportable within rotary wing assets, and they allow fully combat-equipped SOF operators to move around the battlefield rapidly in terrain not easily navigated by larger, heavier vehicles. They are tactical vehicle not to be used in direct line of combat unlike other vehicles like APC, IFV........etc.

He stated that NAF personnel must not be distracted by self-centered individuals who do not wish the nation well. “I urge you to remain patriotic and loyal to the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), Muhammadu Buhari, who is working tirelessly to ensure a secured and prosperous Nigeria”, he said. This reaffirmation was made today, 17 May 2019, during the commissioning ceremony of newly remodeled aircraft shelters at the Headquarters (HQ) of the Air Task Force (ATF), Operation LAFIYA DOLE at NAF Base, Maiduguri. Speaking further, the CAS, who was represented by the Chief of Aircraft Engineering (CAcE), Air Vice Marshal Musa Muktar, expressed delight for the timely completion of the reconstruction work stating that NAF aircraft and equipment would now be better sheltered from extreme weather thereby saving them from damage. Air Marshal Abubakar also noted that the role played by the ATF, through its operations in the ongoing war against insurgency in the Northeast of the Country, was very crucial. NAF SUSTAINS TRAINING OF PERSONNEL ON INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW, HUMAN RIGHTS LAW In its continued effort to ensure that its personnel are in tune with the basic rules of International Humanitarian Law (IHL)/Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) and International Human Rights Law (IHRL), the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in conjunction with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), yesterday, 16 May 2019, organized a lecture for both personnel and trainees at the Military Training Centre (MTC), Kaduna. The objective was to ensure that NAF personnel continually abide by extant laws guiding military operations, both in internal security duties and armed conflicts, in order to forestall collateral damage and safeguard the civilian populace. The lecture, which was part of the MTC training curriculum, addressed the legal framework of IHL and IHRL, basic rules of IHL and IHRL as well as graduation of the use of force and firearms in conflicts. The Resource Person, Major Livinus Jatto (rtd) of the ICRC, stated that the essence of the lecture was to position members of the armed forces to abide by those specialized rules designed to reduce the effects of armed conflict, particularly on civilians. In addition, the knowledge gained from the lecture would enable personnel to limit the level and arbitrariness of violence whilst choosing means and methods of attack that would minimize collateral damage. In his remarks, the Commandant MTC, Air Commodore Jubrin Usman, urged the participants to always comply with these rules in the conduct of operations, reminding them that the NAF has zero tolerance for human rights abuses. He noted that the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has, over the past 4 years, placed tremendous emphasis on educating NAF personnel on IHL/LOAC and IHRL with a view to enhancing discipline and professionalism in the conduct of operations. About 500 participants, drawn from officers on the Young Officers’ Course, flight cadets of 66 Regular Course, officer cadets of the Direct Short Service Course as well as students of sundry courses and staff of MTC, attended the lecture.
