NAF QUICK RESPONSE GROUP GUSAU ARRESTS 16 SUSPECTED ARMED BANDITS AS MORE AIR ASSETS ARE DEPLOYED The 207 Quick Response Group (QRG) of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in Gusau disclosed yesterday, 25 July 2018, that it had arrested 16 suspected armed bandits while participating in the ongoing Operation SHARAN DAJI, which is under the auspices of Defence Headquarters (DHQ). The outgoing Commander of the Unit, Group Captain Caleb Olayera, made the disclosure while receiving the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was on an operational tour of the NAF unit in Gusau. The visit by the CAS, who also announced the deployment of more air assets to support the Operation, was part of measures being taken to add value to the current security architecture in Zamfara State in terms of air operations and NAF Special Forces Operations. According to Group Captain Olayera, aside from its ground operations, 207 QRG had been conducting air operations such as Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, armed reconnaissance and Close Air Support, as part of its contributions to the DHQ-led Operation SHARAN DAJI. He further revealed that in the course of its operations, 207 QRG had also arrested a major hard drugs dealer, who was promptly handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for prosecution. In addition, the Unit had recovered 3 guns, 7 cartridges and a magazine loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition from suspected armed bandits. Furthermore, the NAF Unit had rescued 3 injured villagers at Boko Village as well as 5 policemen held hostage, in addition to liberating 3 kidnapped victims. The outgoing Commander thereafter briefed the CAS on challenges, which if resolved, would further add impetus to the ongoing operations. In his address, Air Marshal Abubakar commended the personnel of 207 QRG for their efforts so far in seeking to restore peace to Zamfara State. He equally saluted their constant bravery in the face of danger while reminding them that, as trained soldiers, they had a responsibility to protect the lives and properties of innocent Nigerians. He assured the personnel that the Nation appreciates their daily sacrifices and that President Muhammadu Buhari, in particular, was very mindful of them. The CAS then announced some new steps being taken by the Federal Government to enhance their welfare. He also immediately gave directives to the senior NAF officers concerned towards immediately addressing all the challenges presented by the Commander as well as those identified by him in the course of the visit. In a subsequent interview with the Press, Air Marshal Abubakar said that the NAF needs intelligence from the populace to help in dealing with the security challenges in the State. He therefore urged the people to support the Armed Forces by providing credible intelligence on the locations of the armed bandits. The Air Chief acknowledged that the projection of air power had natural limitations, such as weather amongst others, but that notwithstanding, the NAF would continue to do its best, within the ambit of safety. Air Marshal Abubakar and his entourage later paid a courtesy visit to the Government House in Gusau, where the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mallam Ibrahim Wakala Mohammed, and other top Government officials received them. The Deputy Governor saluted the courage and efforts of NAF personnel deployed for operations in the State. According to him, the NAF personnel were striving hard to protect Zamfara State people and “indeed, we have witnessed steady progress in security”, he added. He also acknowledged and praised the personal commitment of Air Marshal Abubakar, whom he said, had visited the State severally. He then stated that more could still be done to ensure the security of the people and he accordingly requested for even more commitment from the NAF personnel deployed to the State. The CAS thanked the Zamfara State Government for its support and solicited more cooperation in the area of intelligence, which according to him is “critical to successfully combatting asymmetric challenges”. He then seized the opportunity to announce that more NAF personnel and air assets had been deployed to add value to the ongoing operations in Zamfara State and environs. The CAS and his entourage had since departed from the State. OLATOKUNBO ADESANYA Air Vice Marshal Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force |

NAF REACTIVATES ANOTHER C-130H AIRCRAFT AS CAS COMMISSIONS NEW PROJECTS IN LAGOS The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully completed the in-house life extension programme on one of its C-130H aircraft, NAF 913 thereby improving the airlift capability of the Service. According to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, the NAF would continue to intensify efforts at reactivating unserviceable aircraft in its inventory to enhance its operational effectiveness. He stated this while assessing the progress of work on the in-country Periodic Depot Maintenance (PDM) of another NAF’s C-130 aircraft at 631 Aircraft Maintenance Depot (ACMD) during his operational visit to Lagos from 23 to 24 July 2018. The CAS, who was accompanied on the operational visit by senior officers from NAF Headquarters, also inspected and commissioned some projects at the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base (SEAFB) Ikeja and the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (AFRC) Oshodi. At 631 ACMD, the CAS was briefed by the Commander, Air Commodore Moses Onilede, that the Depot had also successfully overhauled two C-130H aircraft engines while the in-country PDM of the second C-130H, NAF 917, had reached an advanced stage. Responding, the CAS noted that the reactivation of NAF 913 was another major feat recorded by the current NAF leadership to further improve NAF’s capability to provide logistics support across multiple theatres of operations. He therefore commended the Commander and personnel of the Unit while equally thanking President Muhammadu Buhari for providing the enabling environment for the NAF to raise the serviceability status of NAF operable aircraft from about 31 per cent in 2015 to an average of 80 per cent as at date. While in Lagos, Air Marshal Abubakar visited AFRC Oshodi, where he was conducted on a tour of projects executed by the outgoing Commandant, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Ajibola Jekennu. One of the significant achievements was the redesign and reconstruction of 2 blocks of trainees’ hostels from the erstwhile dormitory style accommodation to appropriately furnished 2-occupant self-contained accommodation. Air Marshal Abubakar expressed his delight at the people-centred leadership style of AVM Jekennu and commended him particularly for the steps taken to enhance the welfare of the trainees, most of whom had served the nation for 35 years. In his remarks, AVM Jekennu, said that the massive infrastructural development witnessed in the NAF and the mandate given to him by the CAS to bring positive change to AFRC, inspired his performance at AFRC. The CAS, who is a member of the AFRC Governing Board, later commissioned the newly renovated and expanded AFRC Officers’ Mess. The CAS also commissioned 2 newly completed and furnished officers’ residential accommodation at SEAFB, one of which is a block of 6 x 3 bedroom flats, which was named after late Air Commodore Emmanuel Akinbayo who died on 4 February 2018 while serving as Commander 553 Base Services Group (BSG) Enugu. The wife of the late senior officer, Mrs Oluranti Akinbayo joined the CAS in unveiling the plaque of the building. The second building is a block of 10 by one bedroom flats for single officers. The CAS, while speaking during the event, reiterated the commitment of the current Federal Government Administration towards meeting the welfare needs of personnel. He emphasized that no modern war could be effectively prosecuted without credible air power capability and this could not be achieved without effective logistics support. He therefore urged personnel of Logistics Command to rededicate themselves to their constitutional roles and charged them to remain apolitical while exercising their legitimate rights to vote for the candidates of their choice. While in Lagos, Air Marshal Abubakar inspected some old blocks of airmen’s residential accommodation that required various levels of repair works. He immediately tasked the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command (AOC LC), AVM Remigius Ekeh, to assess and submit the requirements for renovating the buildings. The CAS also seized the opportunity to visit a fish farm being run by barracks youths under his initiative known as ‘Barracks Youth Empowerment Through Agriculture’. Before departing from Lagos, Air Marshal Abubakar held stimulating interactive sessions with officers as well as airmen and airwomen of NAF units in Lagos area.
