NAF INDUCTS ADDITIONAL SUPER MUSHSHAK AIRCRAFT, GRADUATES MORE STUDENT PILOTS The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) yesterday inducted 5 additional Super Mushshak trainer aircraft into its inventory for the primary training of its pilots at 401 Flying Training School (FTS), Kaduna. At the same time, 16 ab-initio student pilots, including 2 female cadets, graduated from the 401 FTS. It is significant to note that it was the first time in over 30 years that NAF cadets of the Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna would be graduating from flying training before being commissioned as officers. The newly inducted aircraft, which were the NAF’s first batch of 10 Super Mushshak aircraft procured from Pakistan, were recently received by the NAF. The inducted aircraft are all brand new and are fitted with digital glass cockpit in line with current practice in the global aviation industry. In his remarks at the occasion, the Special Guest of Honour, Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who was represented by the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mansur Mohammed Dan Ali, stated that one of the major security policy thrusts of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is the building of the capacity of the Armed Forces. “We have since embarked on qualitative training and acquisition of new platforms and other supporting equipment for the Armed Forces and security agencies. We have also sanitised the procurement process of military hardware with a view to eliminating corruption and inefficiency. This has contributed in no small way to the acquisition of these new aircraft without any encumbrances,” he stated. The Acting President congratulated the newly graduated pilots for the accomplishment in completing the primary flying training in a record time. “You should by now have known that the reward for hard work is more hard work”. He then commended the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, for his selfless efforts in repositioning the NAF for greater professionalism and excellent service delivery to the country. Earlier in his welcome address, the CAS commended the efforts of the Federal Government in acquiring several operational and training platforms for the NAF as well as for the huge investment in infrastructural and human resource development in the last 2 years. According to the CAS, within that period, the NAF has been able to reactivate 12 hitherto grounded aircraft but which are now flying. “We have attained between 63 to 70 per cent aircraft serviceability rate as against about 35 per cent aircraft serviceability rate 2 years ago", he said. The CAS further stated that the capacity development efforts of the NAF had translated into better operational efficiency in the North East and other parts of the country. Air Marshal Abubakar also noted that the defence architecture of the NAF Bases had improved tremendously in the past 2 years with the training assistance the NAF receives from the British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT). The graduation of ab-initio student pilots is part of efforts at repositioning the NAF into highly professional force. “Our plan is to consolidate on this achievement in order to attain self-reliance in local pilot training.” The representative of the Special Guest of Honour and other invited guests were later treated to an aerial display, involving several acrobatics, by one of the new aircraft. The distinguished guests also visited the Air Force Research and Development Centre in Kaduna, where they inspected some ongoing research works such as the Gulma Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Unguided Rockets and the Powered Chute Aircraft. PRESS RELEASE : NIGERIAN AIR FORCE DESTROYS BOKO HARAM HIDEOUT youtube Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNAlwF-TYx4 In furtherance of operations to completely defeat the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) Organization, on 7 August 2017, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Component of Operation LAFIYA DOLE conducted an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission over Parisu, in the Sambisa general area. During the ISR mission, a large group of Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) was seen converging under a tree close to a prominent zinc-roofed structure. Part of the structure was concealed by the foliage of a tree, making it a seemingly unobtrusive gathering point for the terrorists. A confirmatory ISR mission indicated that the structure was indeed a BHT hideout, housing a large number of terrorists. Accordingly, on 8 August 2017, the Air Component detailed fighter aircraft to strike the target in succession. Following the first and second strikes, the building was completely destroyed and the location was strafed during the third attack. The fourth attack was re-directed to a close by building, where BHT activity was also noticed. Subsequent Battle Damage Assessment revealed that the BHT hideout was completely reduced to rubble and several BHTs were killed while a few of them were seen evacuating the casualties. Al-Shabaab captures AU base in southern Somalia town MOGADISHU, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Somalia militant group Al-Shabaab on Friday captured an African Union peacekeeping mission base in Lego town in lower Shabelle region in the south of the country after Burundian contingent withdrew early in the morning, officials said. A Somali military official who declined to be named confirmed to Xinhua that the AU's Lego base is now under Al-Shabaab militants while Burundian troops and Somalia National Army (SNA) vacated from the base. "African Union peacekeeping troops from Burundian emptied their biggest military base today, I cannot tell the reason but I can confirm their withdrawal from Lego base in lower Shabelle region," the official said. Heavily armed Al-Shabaab militants immediately moved in Lego town after the troops' withdrawal, according to eyewitnesses. Al-Shabaab militants celebrated the withdrawal of the AU troops from Lego base in Lower Shabelle as a great victory to their fighters. Dozens of AMISOM Burundian contingent were killed in June 2015 after Al-Shabaab fighters raided their base in Lego. The group claimed they killed over 50 soldiers there. The group has carried out deadliest attacks at African Union peacekeeping troops in Lego and Janale in Lower Shabelle region, El-Adde in Gedo region and Kulbiyow base in Lower Jubba region in southern Somalia in the past three years. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2017-08/05/c_136500742.htm |

AIR POWER CRITICAL TO COMPLETE DEFEAT OF BOKO HARAM – CAS The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has stated that global experience shows that air power is critical to the defeat of asymmetric warfare such as the Boko Haram insurgency. He said this on 7 August 2017 while visiting the frontline troops at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Yola. “All hands must therefore be on deck to ensure the effective projection of air power to complete the defeat of the Boko Haram challenge”, he said. Accordingly, the CAS urged all the personnel to ensure that all the NAF aircraft committed to Operation LAFIYA DOLE remained serviceable and operational for the NAF to effectively project air power. He also assured the personnel that the Service Chiefs had started exploring how to improve the synergy among the 3 Services towards putting a final end to the Boko Haram menace. While on the visit, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed appreciation to the NAF personnel for their continuous selfless efforts towards ensuring that Nigerians are able to go about their normal businesses without fear. He also commended their efforts in maintaining aircraft and associated equipment, which had enabled the NAF to fly over 9000 hours in the previous 2 years alone, in prosecution of the counterinsurgency operations. The CAS added that there was no doubt that the security situation in the country had improved but he was quick to add that the NAF could still do more, especially in view of the recent setbacks. Air Marshal Abubakar therefore charged the personnel to redouble their efforts at further ensuring the security of the country, remarking that Nigerians expected more considering the huge taxpayers’ resources being expended to sustain the operations. While making comments, most of the personnel appreciated the efforts of the NAF leadership in creating a conducive environment to operate. A few highlighted some challenges bordering on operational, training and welfare matters whereas others suggested additional infrastructural development to enable them function better. The CAS promptly addressed all the issues raised, to the satisfaction of the personnel. He subsequently cautioned the personnel on the need to take absolute care of the equipment entrusted in their care as well as to always adhere to all the safety standards and procedures already in place. The CAS also seized the opportunity to inspect ongoing projects on the NAF Base in Yola. Air Marshal Abubakar later returned to Maiduguri, where the Air Component Commander briefed the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mansur Mohammed Dan Ali and the Chairman Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Abubakar Kyari on recent air operations. Afterwards, both the Minister and the Chairman took turns to address the NAF officers, praising them for their professionalism and dedication to duty. The Minister and the CAS also addressed some of the NAF Special Forces, who are fighting alongside the land forces. The main essence of the visit was to enable the CAS thank the personnel for their efforts, listen to their inputs and possible challenges as well as to urge them to show more commitment to the ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
