MNJTF Defence chiefs pledge to intensify efforts against Boko Haram

The Council of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Troop Contributing Countries (TCC), has resolved to intensify collective efforts aimed at clearing the remnant of Boko Haram terrorists in the region.

The council’s resolution, at the end of its a special session held in Niger Republic, is contained in a statement issued on Saturday by Col. Muhammad Dole, the MNJTF’s Public Information Officer.

He said the session was held to reappraise the special joint operation around the Chad Basin tagged `Operation Gama Aiki.’

Dole said the council reaffirmed its commitment to continue pooling resources together to finally combat the menace of Boko Haram terrorists in the sub-region.

He said the Council of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Troop Contributing Countries (TCC), held special session to reappraise Op GAMA AIKI.

According to Dole, the Chairman of the Council and Chief of Defence Staff of Nigerien Armed Forces, Gen Seyni Garba addressed the meeting on the status of the operation.

“It is apparent that despite the limited capability of the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT), they still pose serious security threats in the region.

“It is absolutely necessary to pull resources together to flush out the remnant of the terrorists,’’ Garba was quoted as saying.

Dole said Commander of MNJTF, Maj.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun briefed the meeting on the general security, logistic and operational status of Operation Gama Aiki.

He said the commander assured the meeting that the MNJTF was making tremendous progress in the theatre of operation despite the challenges.

Dole said the council commended both the air and ground forces for their professional conduct in the frontlines.

There are many high-tech motars with laser range finder ,computer Trajectory Calculation,or even guided projectile can fire accurate and effective. However most of time for a COIN no need.cos there are many different ways dealing with.

Quadcopter UAVs for surveillance locate the enemy first before they approch you.And fire first with motar or howitzer before they get close to you and fire.
Yew of course I know, will put corrupt leaders and top brass by hi-tech weapons like that. And even if they are going to buy it takes months or even years, while other countries;(morroco, egypt, algeria) get that in matters of few month..........

I disagree..the 81mm mortar employed by N.A troops has a 25m blast radius with HE shells having a 40m blast radius..enough to wreck any technical gunners. 50 shells would have inflicted serious casualties on the attackers to buy the troops
Of course they av much devastating effect and blast radius...!

Let's be realistic here: even the best trained soldier in the world would not stand BHT AAG/HMG blazing from all directions in a base that is not well protected, That's suicidal

If you want u mortar fire to be accurate and to be effective, it as to be from a defensive position. How do you want to range ur enemy position when you av high calibre shells firing on ur positions.

I concur...The virgin-hunters were like sheep without a sh ;Depherd..No coordination, no nothing. But, of what use is. coordination when you have enough firepower to drench a base with 12.7mm and 14.5mm shells? I have TONs of military documentaries on my laptop including many series on the war in Afghanistan, and ill tell you, even a USMC F.O.B would not have survived that attack without Apache support.

The cache BH siezed from that base is nothing compared to the booty at the MNJTF base at Baga. I have the vid of the attack, and there were clips of smiling insurgents emptying entire rooms filled with ammunition, artillery shells (to be used for I.E.Ds), rifles and even mortars. It was a disaster, so ill forgive the Nigeriens.

Someone praised the use of trenches by the N.A troops. But the truth is, sitting in a trench and returning fire against swarms of Dshk-armed technicals, is suicide. No ballistic vest can stop 12.7mm shells. The vest will be diced like onions in a blender. Hence the reason why the term "bullet-proof vest" irritates me so much.

The MNJTF should invest in Hesco bastions similar to the ones employed by the AMISOM forces in Somalia...Layers and Layers of barriers all well manned.

But the question that remains on my mind is, would that base have been overrun if the Nigeriens could have laid down accurate mortar fire?
@katyusha you said it all but u spoilt it with ;"accurate mortar fire"......... grin

When u av a 12.7 & 14.5mm she'll blazing from all directions. Mortar for his not a effective CION weapon. A mortar can only be effective if ur base is well fortified/protected i.e Hesco bastions or stalked sand bags huh

TROOPS REPEL ATTACK ON THEIR LOCATION AT RANN

Yesterday evening remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in their numbers attacked our troops location at Rann, Kala Balge Local Government Area of Borno State.
The terrorists came with Motorcycles Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (MCBIED), Anti-Aircraft Guns and other weapons at about 5.00pm and the exchange of fire lasted for some hours before they were overwhelmed by the troops firepower.
Unfortunately, one of the terrorists' suicide bomber detonated himself at a gun truck killing the driver and the gunner. The truck and the mounted weapon were also damaged beyond repairs. In addition 2 soldiers were wounded in action while 3 others sustained minor injuries.
The troops killed 7 of the attackers instantly while quite a number escaped with gun shot wounds. During clearance operations this morning, the troops discovered 9 more Boko Haram terrorists dead bodies in the surrounding areas. Therefore the total number of terrorists killed was 16.
The troops also recovered a General Purpose Machine Gun, Rocket Propelled Grenade, ammunitions and captured 2 of the terrorists alive.
The bodies of the 2 fallen heroes and the wounded in action soldiers have been evacuated to Maiduguri, while reinforcement was sent from Gomboru Ngala.
In a related development, troops have also discovered and safely detonated 2 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted along Gomboru-Rann road. It is believed that the IEDs were planted yesterday to prevent troops reinforcement to Rann while the attack lasted.
The Commanding Officer of 3 Battalion has visited the troops and held durbar with them. He commended them for their doggedness during attack and also urged them not to lower their guards.
Despite the incident, troops morale remains very high and they have continued with their clearance operations.
Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Hmmm, will Bokoharam ever be defeated in Niger, Chad or Cameroon even if defeated in Nigeria? So Nigeria really need to be prepared militarily for a reinvigorated Bokoharam. West Africans nations not currently involved in this conflict will be vulnerable to a Bokoharam hardened by engaging Nigeria in battle for so long. They need to start thinking seriously of modernizing their armies.
Most of these neighbouring countries are not taking the fight serious especially Chad and Nigeria. The NA is giving them serious heat, if other affected countries can intensify the fight there will be no hiding place BHT.

It's because of operation that BHT has migrated to other "less safe haven" . I believe Nigeria will defeated insurgency but they can easily lunch attack from other neighboring countries try our porous borders.

1, Those terrorists with poor fire discipline cannot fight, i can't seem to phantom why, apart from overwhelming numbers of marauders they over-run military bases.

2, The bases that keep getting over-run have APCs, 14.5mm and heavy caliber weapons. A bunch of goons running around with AKs shouldn't ordinarily be too much of a problem.

3, We seriously need to consider putting trackers on our Hilux vehicles.
Honestly that's a good idea u av here, so they don't use the same vehicles to lunch attacks else where. Paraventure they are captured they might be tracked and destroyed or recaptured back.

I just watched the video..Here are my conclusions:
1. Boko Haram is far from being defeated. It can still mount large-scale attacks at will.
2. BH still has hundreds of battle-hardened foot soldiers on standby.
3. BH is still well-equipped with large reserves of AK-47s and AAAs like Dshks.
4. BH's Technicals are basically ex-N.A vehicles.
honestly am just scared.......... embarassed

lol grin grin grin

first priority is to take out the technicals.
militarily BH entire center of gravity seems to be around the utilization of these technicals.

high time somebody gave a serious thought to tackling these technicals.

my idea / suggestion

1.road spikes especially designed and fitted with anti handling features i.e f**king attach proximity/ motion sensitive IEDs to these spikes designed to go off if somebody tries to remove/ approach them. beat the freaking terrorist in their own game with their own weapons.

the IED attached to the spike should be such that it cannot be recycled/reused.

camouflaged IED treated road spikes can be placed all around the base upto the external perimeter, another plus point any one of them going off will trip , alert the base defenses. plus hamper the technicals mobility.

during a BH assault even if 30% of the technicals are immobilized due to this, especially at the start of the assault the momentum is seriously broken and the attack will fail provided the defenders provide resistance.

2.remote controlled explosives with anti handling features placed at approach points , these can be high explosive, smoke , phosphorous, napalm based. any technical in close vicinity of such devices can be blown off remotely.

3. develop mortar artillery based cargo rounds filled with tyre puncturing spikes, any such round fired in air burst mode over approaching technicals will stop them.

4.fill the trenches with oil and other available smoke producing substances which can be set on fire to disrupt visibility for the technicals and deny them targets, do this only if you have immunity from the smoke screen only and the capability to hit the technicals through the same smoke screen .

5. low cost long range upto 2-3 km fire and forget ATGM to take out the technicals.

others plz add if you have any

@bidexiii what say you?
Honestly it's a good idea and to me it doesn't look that expensive to put on. Only if our top brass can think in such directions. If those soldier lives meant something cool

The base was over-run, it's nothing new in a conflict like this. The base was poorly defended that's all. When Boko-Haram overran Baga or Gwoza, they captured much more equipment than what they got in Bosso.

A conflict like this would always be overdrawn, i mean Turkey is a very good example. Some parts of Southern Turkey looks like Syria.

Bases have to first be properly defended, helicopters would not always be available. Neither are helicopters the answer to a poorly defended base. There has to first be a complete re-engineering of base defence, a coordinated approach to securing bases and identified kill zones were the enemy would be slaughtered. This means having different layers, example, like we have done with building trenches around our bases.
You are right when Baga and gwazo was overran BHT then there where many factors responsible for that? The army was badly equipped. No t72s, BMP's and morale was too low then...!

And even during the advent of new equipment, BHT still overran some base. But my point his not these time when BHT as being degraded totally, it's like we are going front and backward's. The amount of weapons and vehicle captured his enough to sustain BH operations.

Most of these soldiers are not well paid or are being owned field allowance etc......? And also not properly trained, so air assets are of great advantage and of great necessity in such massive attacks!

chinese8107:
agree trenchs are needed
but if they don't have time to build or simply a temporary base
scout unit like scout cars(or simply toyota)patrolling around and snipers hidden in crutial positons will not cost much

if helicoper or scout car is expensive http://www.flir.cn/suas/content/?id=73063 then this toy cost only a second hand toyota. can provide at least 10 km air scout.

if enemy spotted 10kms away you have enough time to respond wether defend calling for reinforcement or retreat
Trenches.............

The major Nigeria army that was overrun, there where enough trenches. Infact in the video you will find dead soldiers inside the trenches, Nigeria bases that av seing are protected with enough trenches.

In my own opinion, those bases do not av enough man power due to the vast land area of the war front so there are many check points and mini-military bases. So BHT use overwhelming firepower and numbers to run such bases. The last that was done in nigerian soil, they captured a BHT -4E, thank God for the airforce and quick response of the 72 MSF, They where able to recover the btr-4E and some other equipment.

SergeAlain:
What scares me is the shear volume of heavy equipment these terrorists captured in bosso. For so long in Nigeria raids have succeeded only in killing 5-6 individuals each time and capturing virtually unservicable AK47s and dane guns. Where were BH able to mobilize such numbers of men and equipment that they could overwhelm such a well armed and manned base. With what they captured here they are now twice as dangerous and likely more confident.

If we are wise this is a time to prepare for similar raids especially as the dry season returns both along the border and maybe further inside Nigeria
Honestly there should be dedicated air-force for the Multinational Joint Task Force. And am still afraid with the amount of weapons captured, very soon BHT will carry out an attack on a military base.

Secondly what's that cache of weapons doing in that military base and I think there is not enough soldiers on ground to defend/hold the base.

Niger moves Su-25s to southern border

Niger has moved much of its air force to a new base it is building at the airfield close to the town of Diffa on the Nigerian border, satellite imagery shows.

Airbus Defence and Space imagery from 7 March shows that two Sukhoi Su-25 ground attack jets were at the Diffa airstrip on that date. The Niger Air Force operates two Su-25s that it acquired from Ukraine in 2013. These were previously based at Diori Hamani International Airport outside the capital Niamey, more than 1,100 km to the west.

A Cessna 208B turboprop, two Mi-24 assault helicopters, and one Mi-8/17 transport helicopter were also at Diffa on 7 March. The United States delivered two 208Bs that have been modified for the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) role to Niger in October 2015.

The imagery also showed extensive construction work was under way at the facility, with new parking areas already built for the Su-25 and three hangars under construction.

Another image taken on 28 May shows that the two smaller hangars had been completed by that date. An additional 208B was present on that date and only one Su-25 could be seen, but the number of helicopters remained unchanged.

Fresh markings have also been painted on the runway and the base now has a complete security perimeter and additional vehicle-inspection area at the entrance point.

Pic below shows;Airbus Defence and Space satellite imagery shows one Su-25, two 208Bs, two Mi-24s, and one Mi-8/17 at the new Diffa airbase on 28 May. Two of the new hangars had been completed.

SUICIDE BOMBERS EXPLODES IN DAMBOA

-WARNING DISTURBING IMAGE-

At the early hours of today, precisely at about 5.15am, two Boko Haram terrorists suicide bombers attacked Damboa. The first suicide bomber targeted Damboa Central Mosque but due to stringent security measures, he could not gain entry. Obviously frustrated, he exploded and died near the Central mosque.

However, the second bomber veered off and gained entry into another smaller mosque and detonated the bomb killing himself and 6 other worshippers and injuring one other person. The wounded has been evacuated to a hospital while efforts are on to clear the rubbles. Troops and other security agencies have been mobilized to the area.

In a related development, suspected elements of Boko Haram terrorists ina survival bid attacked Gaskeri village ahead of Dalori yesterday evening, where they killed 3 civilian vigilantes and looted foodstuffs. Troops have been mobilized and they are on the suspected terrorists’ trail.

Similarly, as part of the efforts to keep Maiduguri-Dikwa-Gamboru Ngala road open and safe, troops of 3 Battalion, 22 Brigade yesterday escorted 4 trailers and 44 other vehicles from Dikwa to Gamboru Ngala yesterday. The escort duties would continue.

Troops of 3 Battalion ambushed Boko Haram terrorists at Gajibo crossing point and recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with magazine, a transistor radio and a knife on 6th July 2016.

We must rebuild those border areas and initiate real commercial activities there is the insurgency is to be permanently defeated.
You av to see the amount of weapons and vehicle captured. It's enough to sustain BHT operations/attack around vulnerable areas for years.

rebuilding borders would not only be enough. Bordering countries should intensify the war against BHT, considering the proximity of borders we shear with three countries.
