@siena, i beg to differ. Costee is absolutely right. as much as i know nissan cars, i drive a murano, the "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" indicator is similar to the "CHECK ENGINE" indicator for Toyota, Honda etc. nissan cars have a separate indicator for regular engine servicing as per mileage driven on the trip computer. my murano has it on the centre console LCD display & this can be reset manually once service is done. infact, because i use mobil1 for my car, i sometimes reset the trip computer without servicin jst to clear the annoying warning indicator. Siena: Not true. |

What is a continuously variable transmission? A continuously variable transmission, or CVT, is a type of automatic transmission that provides more useable power, better fuel economy and a smoother driving experience than a traditional automatic. Driving a car with a CVT The controls for a CVT are the same as an automatic: Two pedals (no clutch) and a P-R-N-D-L-style shift pattern. But while an automatic transmission has a set number of gear ratios (a.k.a. speeds), usually 4, 5 or 6, the CVT can constantly change the relationship of engine speed to car speed. When driving a car with a CVT, you never hear or feel the transmission shift -- it simply raises and lowers the engine speed as needed, calling up higher engine speeds (or RPMs) for better acceleration and lower RPMs for better fuel economy while cruising. Many people find the CVT disconcerting at first because of the way cars with CVTs sound. When you step on the accelerator, the engine races as it would with a slipping clutch or a failing automatic transmission. This is normal -- the CVT is adjusting the engine speed to provide optimal power for acceleration. How the CVT works Traditional transmissions use a gearset that provides a given number of ratios (or speeds). The transmission (or the driver) shifts gears to provide the most appropriate ratio for a given situation: Lowest gears for starting out, middle gears for acceleration and passing, and higher gears for fuel-efficient cruising. Though there are several types of CVTs, most cars use a pair of variable-diameter pulleys, each shaped like a pair of opposing cones, with a metal belt or chain running between them. One pulley is connected to the engine (input shaft), the other to the drive wheels (output shaft). The halves of each pulley are moveable; as the pulley halves come closer together the belt is forced to ride higher on the pulley, effectively making the pulley's diameter larger. Changing the diameter of the pulleys varies the transmission's ratio (the number of times the output shaft revolves for each revolution of the engine), in the same way that a 10-speed bike routes the chain over larger or smaller gears to change the ratio. Making the input pulley smaller and the output pulley larger gives a low ratio (a large number of engine revolutions producing a small number of output revolutions) for better low-speed acceleration. As the car accelerates, the pulleys vary their diameter to lower the engine speed as car speed rises. This is the same thing a conventional automatic or manual transmission does, but while a conventional transmission changes the ratio in stages by shifting gears, the CVT continuously varies the ratio -- hence its name. Advantages of the CVT Engines do not develop constant power at all speeds; they have specific speeds where torque (pulling power), horsepower (speed power) or fuel efficiency are at their highest levels. Because there are no gears to tie a given road speed directly to a given engine speed, the CVT can vary the engine speed as needed to access maximum power as well as maximum fuel efficiency. This allows the CVT to provide quicker acceleration than a conventional automatic or manual transmission while delivering superior fuel economy. Disadvantages of the CVT The CVT's biggest problem has been user acceptance. Because the CVT allows the engine to rev at any speed, the noises coming from under the hood sound odd to ears accustomed to conventional manual and automatic transmissions. The gradual changes in engine note sound like a sliding transmission or a slipping clutch -- signs of trouble with a conventional transmission, but perfectly normal for a CVT. Flooring an automatic car brings a lurch and a sudden burst of power, whereas CVTs provide a smooth, rapid increase to maximum power. To some drivers this makes the car feel slower, when in fact a CVT will generally out-accelerate an automatic. Automakers have gone to great lengths to make the CVT feel more like a conventional transmission. Most CVTs are set up to creep forward when the driver takes his or her foot off the brake. This provides a similar feel to a conventional automatic, and serves as an indicator that the car is in gear. Other CVTs offer a "manual" mode that simulates manual gear changes. Because early automotive CVTs were limited as to how much horsepower they could handle, there has been some concern about the long-term reliability of the CVT. Advanced technology has made the CVT much more robust. Nissan has more than a million CVTs in service around the world and uses them in powerful cars such as the 290 horsepower Maxima, and says their long-term reliability is comparable to conventional transmissions. |

got this by email. thought i should share The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) stormed Air Nigeria office on Monday, 18 June 2012, with mobile policemen armed with guns to demand for past taxes allegedly owed during the period when Mr. Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic was running Virgin Nigeria, now Air Nigeria. These taxes have been in dispute and needed to be reconciled and agreed upon. The FIRS is however not patient with such reconciliations but resorted to a military approach in a civilian era. Air Nigeria is not indebted to the government on current taxes since the acquisition of the airline by Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, OFR. We therefore consider the FIRS action as uncivilized and condemnable. We are at a loss as to what the FIRS has been doing for the past 8 years without collecting the taxes from previous management of the airline. We assure the general public that Air Nigeria cannot be intimidated by this crude approach and will not be ready to give bribe to any person no matter how highly placed. We will brief the general public as the issue progresses. It should be noted that since the commencement of international operations on the Lagos - London route, Air Nigeria has become the object of an orchestrated attacks that show clearly that this is a case of the voice of Jacob and the hand of Esau. In following the external influence, local staff of the airline went on strike in May for May salary which the management has resolved amicably. As the airline was coming out of that, the news of it being grounded by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) infiltrated town. Again, as the airline was coming out of this with a clean bill of health, barely two days after, the airline is yet invaded in a military manner. We suspect that one other line of action will be coming in the coming week to further attempt to damage us in the public eye; but we assure the instigator of such uncivilized approach that Air Nigeria will not compromise its corporate values and development strategy. come on guys, help a brother out here........need more inputs pls |
im suspectin its electrical too. just wanna be sure. enugu is pretty far to me though. wish sienna could say somethin about this. Guy I had similar issue with my wife's Hyundai Sonata, way back 2010, its electrical, someone mention it here he is correct. It has to do with the Switch they call it brain box or whatever. You have to look for a very good electrical guy that can do it, mine was done here in Enugu and the guy was really good here is his nos: 08037454654. all d best |
iv actually gone beyond checkin the level. iv drained and refilled with original honda ATF imported from USA. yet the issue persists. sometimes the problem disappears only to reappear when you least expect. |
iv actually gone beyond checkin the level. iv drained and refilled with original honda ATF imported from USA. yet the issue persists. sometimes the problem disappears only to reappear when i least expect. dejideoye: If you've checked the ATF level and its ok, the problem is most likely fron the gear brain box, pls see a good auto-electrician to check it before it damages the gear, wuld've suggested mine, but I'm in Ibadan. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! somebody help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
my auto trans has some funny characters (most of these happen when iv driven the car for a long time; 1)it skips R when im changin from P thru R,N to D 2)when i arrive at my destination after a long drive, it refuses to engage P. i hav to drive back and forth a few metres for awhile b4 i can sucesfully engage P 3)when i park on a hill, especially facin down slope, it takes a lot of physical effort to shift from P to R, this is usually violent too iv had lots of enbarassin moments lik when i last travelld to d east from Lagos. i got to Benin & realizd i couldnt engage P, so i couldnt leave my car to eat. i resorted to eatin gala til i got to Aba .last time, i was wit dis new babe . we went to the movies on d island. i got a parkin space, parked, but my gear couldnt engage P. (& u knw u cant take the key off). short story was dat i had to drive back home.i can't rily say if this is a mechanical or an electrical issue. cos sometimes the gear engages P physically, but the indicator on the dashboard doesnt light up. pls il appreciate if the auto gurus in the house help me on this issues. the siennas, ikennas, inspireds etc im waiting oooo |
