Not that people like him but he knows how to use political events to his advantage. The guy is a smart politician. He started from grassroot as motor park tout and rose to the peak. The moment he realized that he had lost support of the masses and his re-election will be tough, he turned against the federal govt and his party (APC) and declared support for his people then decamped to PDP. The federal govt started persecuting him using EFCC and that won him more sympathy from the masses.
The events of presidential/senatorial polls further made things easier for him; all the APC senators lost and one of them (Senator Akume) who was his former godfather declared war and swore that he must retire governor Ortom. This further deepened ppl's support for Ortom.The masses have rejected Akume and so whoever he supports must be rejected as well. They believe senator Akume's control is too much and must end, he was governor for 8 years (1999-2007) and has since then been in the Senate. He installs governors, selects ppl for key appointments, some ppl even allege that he collects 50% of state allocation....
All these played to Ortom's favour.
