What do you mean by good feeding technique? Can you expatiate please?
When you understand the growth profile of Catfish, then you will know when to intensify feeding, change feeds and feeding modalities, with good water quality control, to achieve the desired results.

Good afternoon house. Please how much ( in estimate) do I need to feed 2000 fish from juvenile to grow out stage (like 1kg plus)? Any useful advice will be appreciated. God bless you all.
You can budget minimum of 700k worth of feeds for a good harvest, in 5 months, with good feeding technique and water management.

47bags of skretting, and no i didn't feed with any other supplements.
47 bags of 15kg feed (705kg), to raise 1500 fishes to an average harvested weight of 1kg? This is so amazing. Please, what was the total weight harvested, and the total number of fishes?
Your result calls for extensive research work on " effect of dissolved oxygen on Catfish rearing ".
FamilyRe: Creating The Future by bilag17(op):
Have you been creating the future you want? You can always use the strategy of "Challenge" to achieve this.
A challenge is an event (E), with series of activities performed (R), leading to an expected outcome (O).
This again brings us to E+R=O (previous post), which can also be expressed as being in a contest, for a reward.

The concept is to set whatever you want to achieve as the Contest Target - a goal, to be achieved within a specified time frame. Depending on the Target or goal, the time frame can be 21, 30, 60, 90, 100 days. It can then be tagged " 30 Days Challenge "; 90 Days Challenge, etc., with daily activities cum milestone to achieve.
The secret to successfully achieve the set goal is in carrying out, as a matter of compulsion, identified useful daily activities towards the realisation.

Have you been able to create your future? Please share your experiences.

On Saturday 31st of March, few of us from this forum gathered at Ogba, in Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State to share experiences, and discuss operational challenges to successful Catfish rearing. We shall be having another "Catfish Production Experience sharing gathering" on Saturday 5th of May 2018 at the same venue. Time is 9am-11am prompt.

The gathering is for all aspects of catfish rearing -

SLOVFO:
Hello farmers,

I need answers to some pressing questions.

I have been doing market research on catfish farming in my locality. I met one of the fish sellers and asked how and where he gets supplies. To my surprise he told me he travels to another faraway town to buy fishes whereas we have fish farmers in my town. His reason was that, fishes bred in earthen pond taste better than ones bred in plastic or tarpaulin ponds. I want to know if there is any truth to that? And if so, how can one scale through farming in the city where it will be tough to get earthen ponds?
In mine opinion, the taste of your fish depends on many factors, critical of which are water management, and the type / quality of your feed.

Good one
Thanks for the encouragement.

One interesting thing about the gathering of that day is that all participants agreed to apply the knowledge gained in their various operations, and give feedback in the next gathering.

In attendance, three of the participants are into fingerlings production, while a lady intends to start this month. A participant is into table size catfish production, after having lost his money in his first attempt, while another was there for knowledge about growout production feed budgeting.

Catfish production - fingerlings / juveniles (seed), melange, growout etc is profitable business, if you know the basics, do the right things, with sincerity, honesty and integrity.

If you are based in Lagos, Nigeria, around Ogba, in Ifako Ijaiye, Local Government Area, you can join us for the May gathering.
Contact : 0802-334-0270 for details and free registration.

FamilyRe: Creating The Future by bilag17(op): 10:06pm On Mar 29, 2018
If you have been following this thread, and you strongly believe that the year is full of very great opportunities, by now you must have taken some decisions and steps towards the fulfilment.
However, if you are yet to decide, wake up to the reality. You can create your world, your future.

One very important attitude to cultivate in creating your future is "Take 100% responsibility for your life". This is Jack Canfield success principle number 1. You have created everything you are experiencing up till now. You can uncreate and recreate. Give up every complaints, excuses, and blaming.

This is further expressed as E + R = O (Event + Response = Outcome ). Whatever outcome you are experiencing, in any area of endeavors, this has been the result of your response to a certain event. So, if you don't like your outcome, change your response, until you get the desired outcome.

From this point forward, choose to take 100% responsibility for your life. The watch word here is " change ". Always change your approach for better results.

There are great and wonderful opportunities ahead of you this year, even in the remaining 9 months and 9 days. You have the potential to break life achievement record for the year. In the remaining days of this month decide what you want to achieve this year, write it down, with a plan to achieve it, then, launch out with action in April, and you will be surprised at your results. Remember, evenings for planning, mornings for plan review and execution.

It is a reality, to be experienced.
FamilyRe: Covenant Relationship Contract - The Marriage Vows by bilag17(op): 10:54pm On Mar 22, 2018
Hidden Agenda (In Marriage)

The term " Hidden Agenda " is hereby used, when either of the partners has an intention to conceal information which could jeopardize the Union, at conception or in the future. At times, such information is later revealed, thus causing heart breaking consequences.

The following are few examples of such concealed information.
-Either of the intending partner has a child(ren) already.
-Keeping dates with the ex-.
-Bride's best friend being "in love" with her friend's husband to be, to the extent of being pregnant for him before fixed wedding dates.
-To get documented evidence of being married - men who live outside the country are very good at this. Once they have this evidence, and return back to their base, they don't remember the woman again.
-Just to have child(ren), wealth from him/her, thereafter the focus would be on the child(ren), wealth, at the expense of the well being of the man/woman.
-My accommodation is still available at my father's house (woman), once I can't get along with him, I'll go back.
There are many more of such things, that they are usually unbelievable to hear.

The implications are always grievous since these are seeds of insincerity (falsehood). In all, exposure of such concealed information, or even the attitude alone breeds hatred, unfaithfulness, insincerity, and in some cases lead to separation. I had seen a situation, where concluding part of wedding ceremonies was cancelled despite all that had been spent - the wedding failed. Another one went through the wedding ceremonies, and thereafter, same day separation. This is supposed to be a life long Union, which only God can separate as we shall see later.

When both partners are God fearing, with good parental upbringing, it is very likely there will be no hidden agenda. However, individual characters will reveal the personalities after the marriage ceremonies.

There's need for both parties to be prayerful from onset, for God given partner to glorify God and fulfil His mandate. Although, in some cases, hidden agenda could be through manipulations, hence the need for God to be in charge, and in control, for a victorious marriage.

olabakefish:
Hmmmm it's been a very long time I visited this thread. I can see that the strong are still very active in the business.

It still hurts to see the assets I put so much passion, energy and money into for rearing catfish lay in waste.
After 5 consecutive loss at harvest with no one to hold responsible, juveniles seller will blame either your feed, water or farm practices for the poor output and even if same person supply all they will still find something to shift the blame to.

Do you want to talk about the buyers who price the fish same amount as they buy from the catfish wizards in Ijebu. Who can sell at the most ridiculous prices and still make profit compared to me in town that changes water in concrete pond 4 to 5 times a week with every expensive petrol and to talk of feed that rises in cost by excruciating percentage without warning.

Now I wonder what is the average cost of good feed per kg, cost of seed, cost changing water, cost of treatment in relation to selling price kg bearing in mind an average small farmer that raises 2-3 thousands fishes per cycle in a concrete or tarpaulin pond.

One now begin to wonder, is making profit in catfish farming truly real as we read on this thread and in other places. I still wonder how survived paying back my investors who I promised return on their investment after making loss on the actual money.

After paying them, what I had left could not raise another cycle as the associated cost will even increase the loss more because volume as been the major advantage of catfish farming. Then I decided to pour what I have left in Moku Mogbe Modaran (MMM) to turn around the money to be enough to raise another cycle to see if I can make make profit. We all know how the story went.

What do I do now with the Concrete pond that is diminishing by the day without use, the reserve the tank and borehole (at least they are still put to other use).

@Robonski, @Chilan @other gurus in the house who have survived in the business so far, please WHAT DO I DO.....?!
It's a pity that your experiences with regards to Catfish rearing didn't yield the desired results. I can categorically tell you that there are few things you must have not been doing right. If your location is Lagos, I can guide you through rearing techniques unto a profitable catfish production. My concept being, "Think Big, Start Small". When you must have mastered the production techniques, then grow your farm. Contact me if you're interested. WhatsApp 0802-334-0270. Good luck.
