micgray100: Is this business still profitable. Cos I tried with a thousand fish and still got loss of 1k with wasted time and energy for 5 months.
Please prove me wrong with the followings..
Got seeds from a fish farm I visited myself to see how they grow and affirm it genuineness..
40 naira per fingerlings weight average weight of 10g each..
3 bags of 2mm coppens feeds for 17k each
60 bags of 3mm and 4mm vital feeds for 7500 each
For 5 months water changing .. 50k Drugs.. 10k Labour of boy for 5 months at 8k every month..
From the above
40 x 1000 pieces that is 40k
3 x 17000 that is 51k
60 x 7500 that is 450k
50k water
10k drugs
40k labour
All together
641k expenses..
Average kg after harvest is 800kg multiplied by 800 rate
640k
Diffrence is 1k loss
All I gained is experience... And willing to learn more..
Please House. Educate us more we the newbees on this trend base on Mr above experience how to make gain and experciate better how I could have reduce cost.. Your feed input is 78%, hence the result. However, I've seen a fish farmer, whose input was 60%, and he still made profit. Do you keep farm records? |

Please House. Educate us more we the newbees on this trend base on Mr above experience how to make gain and experciate better how I could have reduce cost.. Congratulations. 1k loss is negligible, when compared with the knowledge gained through the experience. Five months is a very strategic time frame for outstanding harvest, if all necessary rearing resources are utilized. What was the actual quantity stocked-1000, 1100? Definitely the fishes were not fingerlings because you started feeding with 2mm. 1. How many pieces of fish made the harvested 800kg? 2. How many ponds did you use, the sizes, and quantity in each. 4. For a period of 5 months, you are expected to have utilized minimum of 80 bags of 15kg feed instead of the 63 bags used. If all I've stated here are rightfully considered, in mine own view, your harvested weight should not be less than 1000kg. Respond, and we shall be able to identify the learning point. |

olaolu89: The flow is very good, I remove net after 25 to 27 hours. The water usually is a little milky when removed but after 1hour it becomes clean. I use bore-hole water on them. I do start my feeding on the evening of the third day of hatching. As others had rightly pointed it out, the vat water is expected to be very clear. Milky water is an indication of pollution, the level you cannot ascertain, the effect of which usually result in hatchlings mortality 3,4, or 5 days after hatching. Once hatching starts, monitor the water, except in cases where you have bigger facility to manage the pollution for optimal hatch. |

olaolu89: I do inject around 8am, with temperature usually falls around 24-28°c, I allow 10 hours before I strip. They do hatch well after 27hours. . Working on the initial info. How has the flow thru system been? How long do you allow the net to stay before removal? Does the water in the hatchery clear or milky by the time the net is removed? |

olaolu89: Evening, pls am new in catfish fingerlings production. I produce about over 5000 fingers on three different occations. They do start dieing after day 4 about 2 days after I commence feeding. I was told it's the feed I use, pls will like to know if artemia or egg York is the best to start with and do I need to give them any treatment before I start feeding. My location is Ilorin and the breed is CLARIAS. Pls I will be grateful if any experience hand can help as have lost over 20000 fingers on 5 different trails. Let us review the entire process from the beginning, with respect to your breeders selection. When you inject, what was the water temperature? What time of the day did you inject? How many hours after giving the injection did you strip? |

BECALMBECALM: Well done bro excelsiorfarm and other contributors on this thread.I have few questions:1.I want to start fish farm and piggery in ogbomoso but not sure if there is market for it? 2.Is plantain farming profitable?thank you Congratulation in advance. Ogbomoso is strategically located, because of very heavy vehicular and human traffic. Have lodged in an hotel in under G area around LAUTECH, and I enjoyed the fresh catfish barbeque from the hotel, which was always available every night. Good marketing skills will open opportunities for you. Sabo area also may be a good outlet. Carryout a market survey and you'll be surprised at the opportunities before you. |

Ttalk: My analysis applied to those that play by the rule. You can get higher total weight in kg with the same expenses and even sell above 600naira. Mr A can make 100,000 naira while Mr B make 400,000. It depend on so many things Yes, you're very correct. This is where farm management ethics , which cut across many aspects of farm management play a vital role. |

frshwvfarms: Thanks for your consideration and willingness to work toward more solution. May I ask, How are you producing your feed? Do you own Pellet feed production equipment or do use manual mixing..? Does your feed float, sink or both? You mentioned the result has been encouraging. What are the challenges, if any? I was taking a look at some production machines made from China that would aid in larger productions. Have you considered such? There can be much more progress, power, and greatness in unity. Ideas cannot be substantiated until it is tried and put to use. Good Morning . Quite interesting. I have feed pelletizer, mixing had been in many forms - manual to mechanical, for now sinking pellets (working towards floating). Considering those machines from China also. Challenges are many, and cannot be enumerated overnight. Had used mills in Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Ibadan, with many challenges regarding the quality of feeds. What has been your experience with the Chinese machines? |

Ttalk: Salt is very important in aquaculture. It aids digestion and serves as antistress. I use 1kg for every 100kg composition. 2bottle of palm oil is alright Thanks for your explanation. I think there are guiding limits of quantity of different feed components / additives to be added to animal feeds, bearing in mind that such animals are later consumed by human being (us). Pls, what is the purpose of adding palm oil to the feed? |

frshwvfarms: Thanks again TTalk..I would appreciate it if you can quote one for me, please. However i am more interested in purchasing from a very reliable person with a proven safe formula You have great point. There are multiple gains in creating Cooperative for CatFish farmers to patronize and support few authentic local producers and distribute some trusted foreign feed as well as addressing other important concerns such as fair marketing prizes towards sustainability. I strongly support encouraging local feed production to boost job creation and fortify us farmers against fluctuating economy and exchange rate. Imagine not finding the feed you so much depend on because of sudden importation exchange rate or total ban for whatever reason? Such moves will devastate farmers, their families and consumers alike. In support of your view, I am interested in farmer's exchange where we can bring your locally manufactured feed for distribution to farmers as a reliable source. The same place can serve as one stop for stock sales and distribution as well as feed marketing. This idea can encourage talented feed producers to continue producing good feed. The benefit will be reduced feed cost and a reliable trusted marketing location for farmers. We must consider ways to allow this exchange to earn something to facilitate all these activities that are critical to our overall success as a community of farmers. Everyone win when you factor each talent/tool/labor. Your interest has been a concern for consideration. I have been using own local pelletized feed for years, and the result has been an encouragement to me. If interested, we can come up with an arrangement that may be a local fish feed solution, not only to us, but also to other fish farmers around us. |
