CASE STUDY : A Batch 18Q3,18Q4 Participant Project.

The intention of the participant is to learn the basics of successful catfish farming, based on quality seed (Jumbo), quality and tested foreign and local pelletized feeds, and good water management.

Monthly continuous harvest is to be practiced to enhance cash flow during the rearing period.
Since harvest is intended to be continuous after the first, scheduled batch has to be stocked at intervals.

The initial or start up stock of 500 Specials (Jumbo)were stocked in September 2018 (BATCH 18Q3), while another batch were stocked November 2018 (BATCH 18Q4). The facility being used is 4 x 1000 Litres plastic tanks (pictures below), with flow through system. First harvest is scheduled for early January 2019, and thereafter monthly.

Harvesting can be one-time, or selective. It is Selective harvesting that is modified into continuous harvesting to enhance the yield, as well as the cash flow.

Catfish farming is a good business, to be successful in it, you must know the basics. No matter how big your dream is regarding catfish rearing, you can always start small.

In as much as the need for quality seed can not be over emphasized in successful and profitable catfish farming, it is just one of the basic requirements.
You need to understand the growth profile of the specie you want to rear, make provision for adequate feeding and excellent water management .

No matter how fast the catfish breed wants to grow, without adequate quality feeds and good water management, the venture can never be successful, not to talk of being profitable.

The Best Part of 2018

The phrase "Better is the end of a thing or matter than the beginning thereof" is very true. Many who had planned and invested resources in worthy ventures are either harvesting or about harvesting the fruits of their labour (invested resources).

Also, for many who are yet to decide on the way forward, creating the future of their choice, it is still not too late to turn things around in the remaining 40 days of 2018, unto a greater and fulfilling 2019.

From one of the past posts, you can set up 40 days challenge (goal/s) for yourself. Depending on what the goals/ targets are, they can still be achieved before the end of the year. As a strategy, use the next 10 days to plan, and 30 days for execution.

Payments for feeds not received by 5.00 pm, 15th November, automatically cancel your chance to participate, and collect 50 FREE Jumbo catfish on Saturday 17th November. It is an indication that such participant will not be able to feed the fishes for optimal result, thus jeopardizing the exercise. Participants were briefed and notified earlier.

Hello great fish farmers, I stocked 5000 juveniles to rear till smoked size melange and they are 2months and 2 weeks old now. They have consumed 915kg of bluecrown feeds. Presently, they consumes 2 bags a day. Pls, is the numbers of feeds consumed OK ? I also intend to smoke some and sell the rest fresh.

The average weight of your fish at the moment is less than 200g, if the 5000 is complete. However, the feed /your feeding regime is not adequate to take the fishes to average weight of 350g in 4weeks from now. They should be consuming more than 2bags a day at the moment.

Batch 18Q4 Free Seed Collection / Stocking

The free 50 catfish seed for the participants of this batch, shall be the high quality catfish seed (Jumbo) produced specifically for :-
1. Learning / research purpose.
2. Those going into catfish farming for the first time.

Fingerlings production has been one of the challenges hindering the development of the catfish industry in Nigeria. The private sector fingerlings production has increased greatly in recent years. Despite this continuous production increase, the demand for quality catfish fingerlings has also increased significantly, making demand much higher than the supply.

In view of the growing Nigerian population, the demand for table size catfish will continue to increase, hence the demand for catfish fingerlings, and subsequently, the need and demand for high quality male and female broodstocks.

Catfish propagation, which is fingerlings production is an interesting aspect of the complete catfish production cycle. There are some basics you need to know, to enhance continuous successful hatching. If I see the pictures of your facility, I'll be able to give advice. The truth is all about the logistics, which eventually is cost related. This program is to make participants identify and learn the most economical / cost effective ways of rearing catfish, and make profit, thinking big, starting small.
Also timely access to input like tested local feeds as well as occasional meeting / gathering (as may be required) being part of the program. With your distance, the purpose may not be achieved.

However, if there's any specific aspect of catfish farming that is of interest to you, please let me know.

As we are gradually coming to the end of year, what can you claim to have achieved? It will be very sad if despite all the available resources at our reach, not much could be achieved.
