FamilyPreparing Your Child For The Future: A Parent's Advice by Biliamin(op): 9:30pm On Aug 14, 2016
Dear Parents,

There are things that parents do that makes me wonder if they know the implications. In my teaching career, I've come to realize that children who are well brought up produce better results.

What I see these days is training the "butty"(aje butter) way which gets me scared of what will happen in the next 10-15years.

I see eight year olds who don't bother to lay their beds.
I see 10year olds served by the maid or "caring mum" on the table and they either don't pack the table or they just dump the plates in the kitchen for the maid or "caring mum".
Drivers carry the bags of children above 5years and the children call them "my driver".
Manual cloth washing is gradually been replaced by washing machines yet the maid or "caring mum" will be the one to do the laundry.
Children wake up and go straight to the TV and sleep late watching TV with mum & dad but mum & dad don't allow them read late. They'll say "go and sleep".

I see parents play game for hours on their phones yet wonder why their children don't read and why their results are poor despite investment in expensive schools.

I see tweenagers and teenagers who can't cook common white rice because there's maid, nanny, cook, "caring mum" etc.

I see children who are addicted to cheating in exams, assignments, class work and the parents aren't taking conscious steps to correct it instead some will bribe teachers to make their children first or teach them during external exams.

I see children who talk to their parents and other adults disrespectfully and all parents say is "children of now a days are outspoken".

Your children's wardrobe is full of clothes but they don't have a single book.

You buy them lots of toys but you didn't buy them books.

I can go on and on.

See, when next you tell your child not to do house chores, study hard etc have it at the back of your mind that what you're saying is "don't take responsibility for your life".

I guess parents don't know that chores and morals are almost directly proportional to academic performance.

Haven't you thought of it that when our forefathers went to farm, fetched water etc before or after school, the world was a better place?

Haven't you thought of it that our local proverbs which have remained relevant were coined by unlettered men and women?

A yoruba proverb says, "eni a nwo ki wooran"...."those who make news don't watch news".

So when you're mentoring your children to be T.V. addicts you should understand what you're grooming them to be.

There are TWO PAINS in life and everyone must suffer one; PAIN OF DISCIPLINE or PAIN OF REGRET.

When you're preventing your children from going through pain of discipline, just understand that you're automatically preparing them for pain of regret.

Some parents feel that their children's careers are secured because of their financial stand.
Now, let's do this analysis;
1. You get your children a job
2. You make them take over your company
3. You set up a business for them

1. If you get them a job and they have the wrong attitude at work like being late, talking rudely to clients etc which made the company lose a big contract, will they keep them there?
2. They take over your company and your company lost within three months an amount that you didn't make in your first five years in business due to their lack of discipline, will you pat them on the head and say I'm proud of you child?
3. They run the business shabbily and there's nothing to show for it within few years.

The earlier we stop these pampering the better. You will give an account to God about them.

Train your child in the way he should go and when he is old, he won't depart from it.

Regards,
A concerned Parent.

This season in English premiership will be one of the most unpredictable seasons in Premier League history - and the title race remains wide open.

Considering the fact that top world football coaches/managers are currently in epl makes it almost impossible for any football fan to predict correctly.

Leicester city, the current champion, to me may find it very difficult to finish among the top four because of the number of games they will be participating in this season

Arsenal: I am not sure they have what it takes with the current squad but if they participate in the transfer market for more quality and experienced players especially at the defence, they may pull a surprise. Whatever that happens during transfer window' anyway, they will finish among the top 4. However, history is in their Favour. 4th, then 3rd and then 2nd. It may be 1st this season

Tottenham will struggle but top 4 isn't sure

Man City, with one of the most successful managers in the world, will fight to be the top but there is possibility of being distracted by the Champions league. I put them second on the table for this season.

Manchester United: There are a lot of things in Favour of Man U to top the table this season . The coach and his epl experience, The squad and non participation in the Champions League.

Chelsea: Although not also participating in the Champions league, I still don't think they can not overtake Mourinho's team this season but I see them finish among the top 4

Liverpool: In my opinion, Liverpool has not space in the top 4.

What's your opinion? Who are your favourite top 4?

BusinessThe Pros And Cons Of Starting A Business While Working A Full-time Job by Biliamin(op): 11:22am On Sep 05, 2015
Most people don’t start out as entrepreneurs. They choose to start their own business only after some level of work experience.

It could be because they don’t like the idea of having a boss and want to step out as their own. It could be because they learned critical skills that enable them to be a leader in their own right. It could even be because they came up with a great idea in the normal course of working.

Of these three motivations stemming from an existing job (and of course, there are always more), only one stems from the job being intolerable. In the other cases, the job is fine, but entrepreneurship serves as a valuable alternative.

Because stepping out as an entrepreneur is risky and staying with your current job is safe, many potential entrepreneurs consider the idea of starting their own business while maintaining their full-time jobs. This approach doesn’t work for everyone, as it has some critical limitations, but it also has some key appeals.

The benefits:
First, and most important, is the security factor. Leaving your current full-time job to start your own business can be risky. You’ll be abandoning your post, investing your own capital and potentially running on zero income for the foreseeable future. If your business collapses or fails to generate any meaningful momentum, you’ll be low on cash and without a job.

Keeping your job while starting your own business is a way of hedging your bets, granting you some guaranteed income as you work to develop your business on the side. If you keep your job, you can quit at any time. If you quit your job, it’s going to be difficult to get it back.

Keeping your existing job also allows you to take advantage of company resources for the benefit of your new enterprise. Obviously, you can’t take office supplies or tangible goods, but you can talk with your bosses, co-workers and colleagues to get advice or partner with them to develop certain areas of the business. You can even engage in professional networking to start building contacts for your new business.

The drawbacks:

The most obvious drawback is time. If you’re working full time, you won’t have much time left over to pursue your own business. You’ll have to force all your work in the company to weeknights and weekends, which are typically harder times to do business. This means it will take a longer time for you to get your business up and running, and you won’t be able to give it your all for as long as you stay employed.

Second, you’ll naturally consider your startup more of a hobby than a living, and you’ll be less motivated to nurture it to fruition. Rather than being motivated by the sink-or-swim nature of sole entrepreneurship, your safety net will keep you from fully mentally investing in your business

Working on your startup can also have a negative impact on your performance at your full-time job. If you find yourself distracted with new ideas or staying up all night to complete work on some facet of the business, you won’t be able to give your full attention to your job.

Eventually, your employers will notice, and you could wind up losing your safety net altogether. Or, if you can juggle both entrepreneurship and a full-time job, your family and personal lives may suffer. After all, if your only time to work on your side business is on weeknights and weekends, when will you spend time with friends and family? It’s a major burden to take on both at once.

Conclusion:

There are clear advantages and disadvantages to starting a business while employed. But as long as you can reasonably manage both, I would have to give the slight edge to retaining employment while starting a business.

There is a study that suggests entrepreneurs who start a business while still employed tend to do better than those that don’t, but these results might be suggestive of a hidden variable, such as risk aversion, that leads both to this decision and to entrepreneurial success. Personally, I went the route of starting my business on the side while still working as a full-time employee elsewhere. It’s difficult, but doable.

If you do proceed to start a business under your current employer, be sure to adhere to the following best practices:

Don’t do any entrepreneurial work on company time. This could burn a major bridge and leave you without a job.

Be open about your intentions with your supervisors. The last thing you want is for them to find out by happenstance.

Don’t sabotage yourself. If your business demands more work, either quit your job and go full time, or find additional help.

Keep it balanced. Don’t burn yourself out, and don’t allow your performance to slip.

EducationPhoto: Student Caught With Expo In Her Private Part by Biliamin(op): 3:56pm On Aug 31, 2015
Six female students, one of them a final year student of the Department of Library and Information Science, Delta State University, Abraka, were last Friday caught with “expo materials” during examination.

An examiner identified as Sylvester Okiemute caught a final year female student of the Department of Library and Information Science with incriminating materials during an examination.

Sources said the student was caught while sitting for an exam on ‘Entrepreneurship and Information Services’ who had been observing her suspicious moves.

It was gathered that the examiner, convinced that the student was making reference to a paper he smuggled in, asked her to hand over the paper. The girl denied and that led to a shouting match between the examiner and the student. It was gathered that the examiner dipped his hands into her private part recovered the incriminating materials.

Our source, who narrated the incident on condition of anonymity, said the

student was earlier caught by another examiner and she pleaded with the examiner, who later pardoned her.

She was reportedly given another booklet to start over again, but was caught again, 45 minutes later.

Confirming the incident, the university Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Victor Peretomode, said the university had declared total war on illegality and examination malpractices.

Peretomode warned that any student, no matter how highly placed, found to be involved in examination malpractices would be shown the way out.

FamilyA Call To Change "My Children Will Not Suffer What I Suffered" Syndrome by Biliamin(op): 7:38am On Aug 20, 2015
LETTER TO NIGERIAN PARENTS written by Adeyinka Temitope

I wish to start by adding the benefit of my time as a student and then resident in the UK. Living in Abuja now.

The first thing that I discovered about UK-born, white, English undergraduates was that all of them did holiday or weekend job to support themselves – including the children of millionaires amongst them. It is the norm over there – regardless of how wealthy their parents are. And I soon discovered that virtually all other foreign students did the same – except status – conscious Nigerians.

I also watched Richard Branson (owner of Virgin Airline) speaking on the Biography Channel. To my amazement, he said that his young children travel in the economy class – even when the parents (he and his wife) are in upper class. Richard Branson is a billionaire in Pound sterling. A quick survey would show you that only children from Nigeria fly business or upper class to commence their studies in the UK. No other foreign students do this. There is no aircraft attached to the office of the Prime Minister in the UK. He travels on BA. And the same goes for the Royals. The Queen does not have an aircraft for her exclusive use.

These practices simply become the culture which the next generation carries forward. Have you seen the car that Kate Middleton (the wife of Prince William) drives? VW Golf or something close to it. But there’s one core difference between them and us (generally speaking), they (even the billionaires among them) work for their money, most of us steal ours
If we want our children to bring about the desired change we have been praying for on behalf of our dear country, then please, please let’s begin now and teach them to work hard so they can stand alone and most importantly be content and not having to “steal” which seems to be the norm these days.

We have Nigerian Children who have never worked for 5 minutes in their lives insisting on flying “only” first or business class and using the latest cars fully paid for by their “loving“ parents.

I often get calls from anxious parents” my son graduated 2 years ago and is still looking for a job, can you please assist!”

“Oh really! So where exactly is “THIS CHILD?” is my usual question. “Why are you the one making this call dad/mum?"

I am yet to get a satisfactory answer, but between you and i, chances are that the big boy is cruising around Abuja with a babe dressed to the nines, in his dad’s sparkling new SUV with enough “pocket money” to put your salary to shame. It is not at all strange to hear a 28 year old who has NEVER worked for a day in his or her life in Nigeria but “earns” a six figure “salary” from parents for doing absolutely nothing.

I see them in my office once in a while, 26 years old with absolutely no skill to sell apart from a shiny CV, written by his dad’s secretary in the office. Of course, he has a driver at his beck and call and he is driven to the job interview. We have a fairly decent conversation and we get to the inevitable question- so, what salary are you looking to earn? Answer comes straight out – N250,000.00.

I ask if that is per month or per annum.

“Of course, it is per month”

“Oh, why do you think you should be earning that much on your first job?”

“Well, because my current pocket money is N200,000.00 and I feel any employer should be able to pay me more than my parents.”

No wonder corruption continues to thrive. We have a society of young people who have been brought up to expect something for nothing, as if it were a birthright.

Even though the examples I have given above are from parents of considerable affluence, similar patterns can be observed from Abeokuta to Adamawa.

Wake up mum! Wake up dad! This syndrome – “my children will not suffer what I suffered" is destroying your tomorrow. You are practically loving your child to death.

I learnt the children of a former Nigeria Head of State with all the stolen (billions) monies in their custody, still go about with security escort as wrecks. They are on drugs, several time because of the drug, they collapse in public places. The escort will quickly pack them and off they go. What a life! No one wants to marry them.

Henry Ford said “hard work does not kill.” We are getting everything wrong in Nigeria now, including family setting. It is time to prepare your children for tomorrow, the way the world is going, only those that are rugged, hard working and smart working that will survive. How will your ward fare?

Please forward this to all the parents you know and love. We must begin to save our young children from unintended consequences of "too much love" and weak parenting. It is the only way we can build a strong and decent Nigeria.
