Kobojunkie: Better wages is good news. But ain't it time we do away with the low-cost housing just for police? The police need to live among the people. They need to experience life as the people experience it. Maybe an extra Naira 10,000 a month for housing allowance will work.Do they actually have police quarters? Most policemen I know leave within neigbourhood |
http://ynaija.com/2012/05/22/good-times-are-here-new-police-minimum-wage-now-n50000/ Police officers would soon be smiling big time; who knows, the police might finally become our friend. That’s because Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Abubakar has made an announcement which so many would be pleased to hear. Speaking in Alausa, Ikeja, when he visited Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, he said henceforth, policemen would receive a minimum wage of N50,000, “unless there is a change of plan.” He also placed Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police on notice that they would henceforth be held responsible for any human rights violation in their domains. Not done yet, IGP Abubakar went further to warn policemen that “the era of policemen checking vehicle particulars is over. Policemen driving against traffic [should] face the law of the land.” Using populist rhetoric is certain to endear him to Nigerians, the police chief said citizens must be respected at all times and not intimidated by policemen. The highpoint of his presentation was the announcement of measures taken to improve the welfare of officers. Apart from the N50,000 monthly wage to be earned by a constable, he also assured that a low-cost housing scheme was being worked out for policemen in Kaduna and Port Harcourt since “that is where we have enough land.” Policemen are now expected to work hard to remain officers. “The era of policemen who cannot read or write is over. If they send you on a course and you fail an examination for three times, you will be sent out of the job. Our vision is to build a well motivated police force,” he said. |

http://www.africaeagle.com/2012/05/nigeria-government-to-remove-n50b.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Africaeagle+%28AfricaEagle%29&m=1 As consumers await the take-off of a new electricity tariff regime from June 1, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said the yearly N50 billion subsidy, an intervention window provided by the Federal Government for the lowest-paying customers - Residential (R1); R2 and Commercial (C1) customers, will be removed from January 1, 2014. The Executive Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, said in Lagos at the weekend that the decision was reached in order not to create the impression that the window would be opened permanently. “The issue of the subsidy is very critical. We are going to provide N50 billion in this 2012 and another N50 billion in 2013 and no more. The idea is that we don’t want it to be a permanent feature of the industry because it defeats the purpose of creating people, who can pay for the services they receive,” he added. Amadi also stated that under the new tariff, the average cost of energy is N24, while lower categories of consumers would pay only between N4 and N22 per kilowatt hour, “depending on the class, until electricity supply improves and cost-reflective tariff introduced”. He said the tariff was calculated based on the cost of maintenance of meters, replacement of transformers, expansion of facilities and the average cost of the total quantity of electricity to be consumed yearly for the next five years. “The idea is that if we move to cost-reflective tariff now, it will expose some people to hardship, especially as energy supply is not yet available,” he said. He debunked claims that poor customers would pay more under the new regime, stressing that the lowest-paying customers would no longer pay a fixed charge, which is currently being paid monthly by all categories of customers, irrespective of whether “there is power supply for the month or not”. The NERC boss said the R1 customers, who are currently paying between N7 and N10, would pay N4 per kilowatt/hour, while the R2 customers, which constitute about 80 per cent of the consumers, would pay between N11.50 and N12.30, depending on their location. “The new tariff is not uniform for customers in Lagos and Yola for instance, because the operation cost varies across the board. For instance, some have more staff and therefore, pay higher salaries but the range is small,” he said. Amadi further disclosed that the C1 customers, who are artisans and small and medium scale entrepreneurs, would also enjoy subsidy and pay between N15.64 and N17 per kilowatt/hour, adding that since they contribute most of the household income, a huge energy bill would be a major challenge to them. He however said that R3 and R4 customers, who have maximum demand meter and also take electricity supply direct from transformers would pay slightly above the average cost of energy to further subsidise the R1, R2 and C1 customers. Amadi acknowledged that due to the poor electricity supply in the country, the unit cost of energy is still very high, adding that this would reduce when generation improves. “South Africa produces about 40,000 megawatts with 47,000 electricity workers, while Nigeria produces 4,000mw with over 47,000 regular and casual workers. So, our productivity is very low, while the unit cost of energy is very high. The unit cost in Uganda is between N24 and N25; Republic of Benin is N29; Chad is N27. Zambia is the only country in Africa that is probably lower than Nigeria,” he said. He disclosed that as soon as electricity generation improves to about 13,000 megawatt, it would bring down the average cost of energy and tariff would go down. Amadi stated that since the cost of the meter has been factored into the new electricity bill, consumers will begin to enjoy free meters with effect from June 1, while payment of meter maintenance fees, which constitutes 40 per cent of the current tariff, has also been abolished. |

http://www.africaeagle.com/2012/05/tech-world-how-nigeria-may-save.html It is no secret that BlackBerry is a far greater force in the developing world than it is in its home continent of North America. BlackBerry blast-off Growth in Nigeria is about to make South Africa look like a slow Sunday at the sewing machine store. Sales outside North America make up 70% of total revenue, and regions making the biggest contribution to that chunk of income include South Africa, Indonesia, and Mexico. Soon, Nigeria may be added to the list. BlackBerry is already the number one smartphone brand there, but in a tiny smartphone market – which comprises less than 5% of the phone market. And that is without having direct representation on the ground. In the next two months, a BlackBerry office will open in Lagos, and Nigeria will become a specific target market. The news was revealed by Robert Bose, head of RIM for Central Europe, Middle East and Africa, at the recent BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Florida. The significance cannot be overstated. Even with only 5% of the mobile market being smartphones. In most Western developed markers, all eyes would be on that smartphone chunk, both because it typically makes up half of the phone market in such territories, but also because it is adefinitive marker of who leads the market. Americans, therefore, look with bemusement at markets like South Africa, where BlackBerry ownshalf the smartphone user base, and is even votedthe coolest brand by teenagers. Guess what? The same is happening in Nigeria. And guess what else? Growth in Nigeria is about to make South Africa look like a slow Sunday at the sewing machine store. High hopes The hidden factor behind BlackBerry's success in Africa is one simple word: aspiration. It is the business phone that denotes having made it – even if you're not in business. Strangely, the iPhone does not carry that cachet. It denotes someone with money, but it is also regarded as an expensive toy rather than a tool. In Nigeria, there is little aspiration for toys. “The brand has gone viral in Nigeria, to the extent that a Nollywood (Nigeria's Hollywood) movie was made about people trying to acquire aBlackBerry*,” says Bose. “We're opening an office in Lagos in the next 60 days.” Underpinning the appeal of the brand is the access it provides. The R59 a month unlimited Internet deal has been critical to its success in South Africa. BlackBerry data packages are now expected to be the key to the Nigeria market. BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), too, has been core to success in markets where BlackBerry dominates smartphones. It is those markets where take-up of BBM is highest among BlackBerry users: 99% in South Africa and 97% inNigeria. And then there is affordability. In markets like South Africa, Indonesia, Mexico and Nigeria, BlackBerry's secret weapon was the Curve 8520. It is the single most popular smartphone model – across all brands – in each of these countries. Bring them all Which brings me to the other remarkable feature of the Nigerian smartphone market: BlackBerry sells as many high-end models there as it does low-end Curves. “A lot of people expect that the only devices we would sell in Nigeria would be the 8520 or the cheapest phones,” says Waldi Wepener, RIM's regional director for East, Central and West Africa. “But we sell as many at the high end. “Because Nigeria is not a subsidised market, and operators don't subsidise devices down to zero, the price of the device at the user level is very visible. And that doesn't hold back the market.” The 8520 sells at up to US$200, while the Bold 9900 has a price tag of around $600. Counterfeit devices, which bedevil the sales of brands like Apple in particular, are not as great a problem for RIM. Again, it comes back to the aspirational nature of the market. “Nigerians want to feel they are holding the authentic product.” In short, customers do not merely want to be seen to be successful, but to feel they really are successful. Therein lies BlackBerry's new hope, and its potential to confound those who predict it cannotsurvive its current loss of Western market share. Consider this: in a market of 100 million phone users, where only 5 million use smartphones, andhalf of those are BlackBerry devices, what will happen when the market begins a mass migration to smartphones? If the Nigerian market remains true to form and aspiration, that means a market of tens of millions of units available to RIM in the next two to four years. Now repeat that equation in Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world (Nigeria is at number seven). Yes, the American market is critical, and it is where both innovation and opinion carry the most weight. But if RIM is building a new future, the foundations are emerging right now in developing markets like Nigeria. News Source: ITWeb |

Onlytruth: Once you cross the Niger bridge heading North towards Uga junction and Upper Iweka road along the Onitsha-Enugu road between Onitsha and Awka/Ugwuoba, the whole corridor should look like this.I have not seen the design ccc is constructing on d road! But I think it will look like this pic you just posted! The road is being reconstructed to a five lane expressway on each side all d way to d fomer toll gate before umunya...also peter obi beautification design of d road I saw is also fantastic with a city gate just after d niger bridge and lawns and streetlights all d way...about d rail line, there is a company that just signed an MOU with anambra state govt to construct a light rail,I think d name of the company is globin or something like that! I don't know if they will use this corridor for the project cause I heard d line will be from onitsha all d way to nkpor, the company is also doing enugu light rail. |
Rhino.5dm:This thread is peaceful because like and matured minds are talking! This is how nairaland discussions should be,constructive and idealistic...not you are a fool! Your father is a goat! Yoruba and agipa stupid discussions |
Onlytruth: Not that the bolded ever stopped anyone from contesting Anambra guber seats, but that is part of why I said it would be in the future. As a matter of fact I may not even do it because I'm more enthusiastic about Igbo/Biafran affairs. Anambra local politics might just tie me down unnecessarily.Well said |
Onlytruth: For now, I will continue to play the role of a policy advisor and counsellor to state governors in the East; but I have a feeling that sometime in the future, I will contest for Anambra gubernatorial seat.I admire you courage and dreams! It can be achieved....but you have to show ur antecedents, and one or two great things you have been able to achieve in private or community practice before you can be give a chance! |
afam4eva: @OPYeah I think soludo is dat visionary go getter leader I have been talking and looking out for! He fits d bill... Its for he to be at d right party and be able to win d election dat is another thing. |
Mr. Globe:I don't think he is a total failure! But not being visionary yes! When a state is in chaos dats when you say someone is a total failure..salaries are being paid road are constructed and rehabilitated old schools are rehabilitated! But model ones like amechi's own is not being done dats why I said he is not visionary. He is just an average leader! 50% pass mark |
Onlytruth: If I were Obi, I would stop all RURAL road works for the next two years. Rural areas don't pay tax!@onlytruth I will disagree with you here..I think it is a waste of scarce resources to do dat! Since FG is already handling it let them finish it ..the best obi can do is to continue to presurizing d FG to finish d job and him to probably beautifying it as he planned to do! That corridor is already congested to actulize ur idea...my best advice to peter obi is to for him to start a new city at otuocha-umuleri axis! There is a lot of empty free haecters of land there! Which is getting scarce in anambra because of the level of individual development dat anambra is know for! That corridor has great potential...it will give d govt opportunity to start from scratch with a good masterplan without demolishing buildings and having law suits to attend to, which actually is what discourages govt from going ahead with modernizing onitsha ,because that's the impediment in beautify onitsha! For example you know what peter obi will go through just to dualize awka road or iweka road! So the best rationale thing is to maintain onitsha as it is retar all bad roads then construct a new city at otuocha well planned with the airport, refinery well structured layouts, shopping malls ,light rail and all basic amenities! Am not saying he should use anambra money to build all these because that will make d project to take eternity to complete....he should just put down d enabling enviroment and bring seasoned investors like fashola is doing with eko atlantic city....I believe dis will de congest onitsha and free it up for controlled administration and good governance. |
~Bluetooth:This same noise everybody is making now is what american citizens were doing 2001-2002! After 9/11...D govt is not doing anything, when are they going to capture osama etc...guess what it took them ten yrs and it is still not victory yet! I believe d reason of making dis info public is to bring confidence on d public that things are being done to combat terrorism...there are many other actions being taken dat is secretly guarded...this one might even be a divertory info...I have heard from madam ogar and other security chiefs countless times saying we can't divulge dis info at dis point in time |
Thats what America did to track down osama bin laden and is used in keeping tab on al-queda! Way to go. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/05/nigerian-satellites-to-monitor.html?m=1 Federal Government will soon deploy satellites to trace movement of suspected terrorists and their locations in the country. The Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr Seidu O. Mohammed said yesterday said there will be training sessions for the security agencies in the next few weeks. “We will also use communications satellites and global positioning systems to monitor every neighbourhood. We believe that is possible here and we are making effort to do that,” he said. “The training is for military and para-military, wewill bring them here and train them on how to use our data, because every satellite launch has its own parameters and you need to understandthem, before you operate them.” Nigeria Sat 2 and Sat X are high resolution satellites with the ability to give very close images. |
CyberG: Wait, let us get this straight: Are you suggesting if he fixes this one road in 8 years, it will be enough to give high marks to his administration of 8 years? In being prudent he will be rated high...in being visionary he will be rated low! He worked with what was available....but won't be said to have embezzled money!! Someone that is leaving office dat is not grooming any successor to me shows he has nothing to hide or has stolen money blindly...he may have used his office to do business! But I don't think they will find anambra money missing when he leaves office. |
inspirenet: Do you have some pix on quality. ThxNo I don't...The local iron rod are from universal steel mill ogba lagos and are very top quality...foreign ones are from ukraine |

ak47mann: so when will anambra state start receiving bigger budget like NDDC states?we have join the league abi.......not yet.....will take a while |
PROUD-IGBO:guy i grew up at GRA onitsha...all those roads you say are tarred were done as far back as jim nwobodo govt, and all roads as you know have a life span...all those GRA roads were in a deplorable sitation B4 peter rehabilitated them. Fegge has refused to pay their taxes thats why peter is somehow neglecting them. but port harcourt rd zik avenue miss elems and co were already done by ngige so i dont know why you say they are bad. fine and good peter obi has not been a marvel in doing big things because his policy has always been even in his private life to live according to the size of your coat.which you may think is poor performance.....but lets give godswill akpabio anambra state budget and let see if he can do what people say he is doing in akwa ibom now with it....for crying out loud 80 billion is anambra state budget this year! what do you expect to be accomplished with that kind of peanut, after paying the huge recurrent expenditure dat came about because of the new minimum wage....and anambra citzens has refused to pay their taxes well because if you ask me thats the only way to raise money to develope the state since we dont receive huge derivation oil money from federation account like akwa ibom rivers delta state etc. |
Onlytruth: I also want to warn any Peter Obi supporter here to show us PICTURE PROOF of URBAN ROADS he has build in nearly 6 years of his rule.Am not living at anambra so I can't go on d roads to bring pics! I have only one to upload...but I will list the roads peter did... These are the roads peter obi did: All most all GRA onitsha roads-( niger drive, park road, new nkisi bent lane hill-otigba cresent etc) enugu road awka rd new & old market rd new cemetry rd,ugwunagbakpa rd,ogbatulenyi rd 33,oraeifti awada!! These and many more just at onitsha...for nnewi: teching hospital road, cutix rd,bank rd,etc for awka: zik avenue and co..and too numerous intra state roads that connect all most the whole villages and towns in anambra I have an excel sheet that tabulated all the roads in anambra peter and ngige did..ngige did like 150km while peter did like 400km.

Even when he has genuine intentions, I doubt that he is TRAINED (professionally) to do the job.
