PoliticsFashola Arrest Top Army Officer For Driving On BRT Lane(pic) by billante(op): 8:26am On Jul 18, 2012
The Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Tuesday 'arrested' two military officers for driving on the dedicated Bus Rapid Transit lane also known as the (BRT LANE).
The Governor was around the area when he spotted the military car driving on the Bus Rapid Transit lane which is meant strictly for the BRT buses, and came down from his own car to confront the men.
Fashola expressed dismay that those who should show discipline and professionalism were the ones violating the BRT regulation.
Colonel K.I. Yusuf drove an Army Green Peugeot 406 with registration number BO1 – 150 NA, whileStaff Sergeant A.J. Adeomi drove a black Toyota Camry.
Perhaps realising the problem that could come from being accosted by the governor, Yusuf reportedly alighted from his car and saluted Fashola repeatedly, saying, "I am sorry, very, very sorry."
But the governor instead asked, "Why, as a senior military officer, did you choose to break the law instead of preserving it?"
The incident was said to have drawn the attentionof commuters and other passers-by who reportedly commended the governor for showing good leadership.
Fashola, after the incident, said it was unfortunate that those who ought to be defendersof democratic values were the ones violating the law.
He said, "The highest levels of the military command have continuously expressed their commitment to supporting democracy and to subjecting themselves and their officers to the laws of the country. Those officers that I caught today are a very bad example for the military."
The governor added that he had complained to the superiors of the culprits, saying they would besanctioned appropriately.
He said his apprehension of the military men signified his commitment and that of his government that all violators of the law should be sanctioned.
He said, "There is a zero tolerance for lawlessness. There is zero tolerance for breach of our regulations and we are going to do more of this. We are going to take control of our traffic. Wecannot build our way out of traffic congestion; ourresponsibility is to manage traffic and manage congestion.
"I don't use the BRT lane, I sit down in traffic andI expect everyone who wants to drive his car to dothe same. The alternative is to use the bus

PoliticsAnambra State Will Join D League Of Oil Producing In Two Weeks Time by billante(op): 2:00pm On Jul 17, 2012
Anambra will in two weeks time formally join the league of oil-producing states in Nigeria.
This will happen on July 30 when President Goodluck Jonathan will visit the south east state to commission
operations at the new Anambra oil wells and to officially welcome Anambra into the fold of oil-bearing
states.
Transport & Business Express reports that the state government-owned Orient Petroleum Resources Plc
has struck oil from three wells in Anambra North and that it has already despatched oil through River
Anambra and River Niger to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital in south south Nigeria, for export in
three barge tankers. “The very light crude from these wells will continue to be exported till the Orient
Refinery in Aguleri starts operation in a few months time,” said Uche Ezechukwu, a prominent Anambra
indigene and foremost media practitioner who has a deep knowledge of the operations of Orient Petroleum.
Started under the Chinwoke Mbadinuju administration, Orient Petroleum was incorporated on July 20,
2001 but went comatose following the exit of the Mbadinuju administration in 2003. “It was revitalized by
Governor Peter Obi who injected N4 billion into it as the state government’s stake and has helped to do all
the silent spade work that led to this happy state of affairs,” Ezechukwu said in a Facebook post this
morning.
Orient Petroleum is chaired by former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and
parades a powerful board on which sits the likes of former Nigerian Vice President, Ide Alex Ekwueme.
Transport & Business Express reports that previous Nigerian governments had disallowed the exploitation
of Anambra’s petroleum resources, declaring them to be on strategic reserve, while denying Anambra the
status and benefits of an oil producing state. The policy has now been reversed by President Jonathan.
Nigeria presently has eight oil-producing states – Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and
Rivers. Cross River was originally on the list but lost that status following last week’s Supreme Court
judgment that ceded all the 76 oil wells previously belonging to the state to Akwa Ibom.

NigeriaKwenu: You're a mod, so your thought process is fixed and is determined by the nairaland board of directors. can't you think for yourself? Just see what you wrote up there.

The mods should first be mindful of the way they engage Nairaland members. Respect they say is reciprocal. if they don't respect themselves and members of this forum then they should not expect respect from anybody.

Afam4eva
Afam you are not even helping ur matter!! You are at a law court accused in a dock and you are pointing fingers and shouting at d judge that he or she is biased! What do u expect dat judge to dohuh

Abagworo: You sound kind of ignorant. You earlier wrote that Nnewi and Onitsha has more industries than Aba and I just mentioned a few popular everyday products we use manufactured in Aba. Let me add to the list. Thermocool, Close up, Imperial leather, 7up, Colgate. These are all verifiable.
All dis product u have mentioned are not more than 4 factories that are manufacturing them! They are almost from d same company
PoliticsRe: The Most Commercialized/industrialized Non-capital Cities In Nigeria by billante(m): 10:48pm On Jul 14, 2012
Abagworo: Please can you list what is manufactured in Onitsha. I know Palm olive soap, Tura soap, Omo, Elephant, Harp, Star, Guiness, Seamans schnapp and some other known products are manufactured in Aba. I do not like arguments based on hear say or personal feelings.
So many plastic industries, vegetable oil industries, lubricant oil industries, breweries, textile industries, marble industries, aluminum roofing sheets etc....hundreds of them!
But they mostly privately owned and moderate....big ones like sabmiller breweries, orange drug pharmaceuticals are also coming up!

ayo011: I agree with you on this.

Onitsha takes it all; both commercial, economic and industrialized, Onitsha wins it. Infact Onitsha has more bank branches than Warri, Zaria and Aba put together. Economy, commercialization and industrialization determines financial institutions migration.
It has been generally agreed dat onitsha wins it! But what I can't fathom is why the IGR(taxes) from onitsha is abysmal, with all d commercialization and industilization going on there, Including nnewi....Anambra IGR should be rivaling lagos IGR...those guys have refused to pay taxes and peter obi is also not doing his job about it! He should come and learn some tax lessons from fashola!

My own advice is use the money and import two trucks! Give it out to construction companies and people into haulage and they will be giving you returns of 50,000 naira per day....but u need to choose a genuine company dat won't fail to pay as agreed upon.

BusinessRussia Warns Nigeria Over Supreme Court Ruling On Rusal by billante(op): 5:47pm On Jul 12, 2012
Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned Nigeria on Thursday of potential damage to bilateral relations and urged action against a court decision that stripped the world’s largest aluminium producer, Russia’s Rusal, of its core African asset.

Nigeria’s supreme court ordered last week that Rusal, which owns 85 percent of the formerly state-run Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON), should cede its ownership, because the assets should have gone to another bidder, U.S. based BFI Group, when ALSCON was privatised five years ago.

Rusal said the ruling was against Nigeria’s Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), which handled the privatisation and gave Rusal the green light to acquire the stake for $205 million in 2007. The decision would thus not affect its ownership of ALSCON, the company said.

“The ruling could … to a significant extent undermine Russian-Nigerian investment and economic cooperation and incur negative consequences for the whole scope of bilateral ties,” the ministry said in a statement on its website www.mid.ru.

“We urge the Nigerian government to take the necessary actions in order to prevent potential damage to the existing fruitful and mutually beneficial relations,” the statement said.

BFI, headed by American-Nigerian Reuben Jaja, took BPE to court, saying the agency breached its contract. The supreme court ruling last week ordered that BPE revert to the original preferred bidder and BFI Group pay the agreed price of $410 million for ALSCON.

Oleg Deripaska, the controlling shareholder of Rusal, is a billionaire who has long enjoyed close ties with the Kremlin. The aluminium giant received billions of dollars in state bailout funds after the 2008 global financial crash.

ALSCON is one of Rusal’s key African assets with annual project capacity of 120,000 tonnes, however its operations have been hampered by regular electricity cuts allowing ALSCON to produce only 15,000 tonnes of aluminium last year, a company spokeswoman said.

Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, is like Russia plagued by rampant corruption. Both share 143rd position in the 2011 corruption perception index of 182 countries compiled by Transparency International.
