Kwara Must Change raises alarm over threat to lives of critics and opposition in Kwara https://mrrightsng..com/2019/01/group-raises-alarm-over-threat-to-lives.html Leading Pro-Democracy group in Kwara State, Kwara Must Change has uncovered plans to threaten and if possible, eliminate some critics and opposition leaders in the state ahead of 2019 general election. The group made this known in a statement of alarm, made to caution those behind the plot as well as put the security agencies on notice. In a statement by the group’s State coordinator, Comrade Yusuf Olatunji over the weekend, Kwara Must Change stated that some government critics and opposition leaders are being targeted by political thugs and assassins and it suspected that this unholy plan is the handiwork of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The group therefore cautions PDP and its leader, Senator Bukola Saraki, urging them to desist from going on with the violent plan ahead of the election, warning that should anything happen to any of the targeted people, the Senate President and the Kwara State government shall be held liable and responsible. Recently, Kwara Must Change raised alarm about the influx of suspected political thugs and assassins, which it said are being camped in olohunda village at Asa local government and Eyenkorin in Ilorin West. Kwara Must Change reiterates that election is not war and the violence that has been imposed on the state is condemn-able. According to Comrade Yusuf, the opposition does not have the tendency or any capacity to cause violence, arguing that the APC governorship candidate, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has been contesting election since 2011 and he has never been associated with violence in whatever capacity. It called on all well-meaning kwarans to shun violence and focus on exercising their rights of electing leaders that will take the state to the next level. END |

Olawepo Hashim calls for President Buhari's impeachment over suspension of CJN Responding to the suspension of the Chief Justice yesterday, presidential candidate of Peoples Trust, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim said: “This is very sad, it is condemnable and must be condemned by all lovers of democracy. It is an ominous return to dictatorship and a complete violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “I call on the president himself to step down and resign because he is leading Nigeria into chaos and anarchy. We fought so hard to install democracy, and we paid dearly for it, we will not allow any group of people no matter how powerful they think they have become to take democracy down. This is not about politics; it is about democracy which we fought so hard to put in place in Nigeria. “If he refuses to resign, the National Assembly should commence his impeachment immediately.” “I also call on members of the international community to immediately impose sanctions on the members of the executive branch at the federal government. These sanctions should include revocation of existing travel visas for them and their families and business associates including targeted asset seizures. Senators angry Senators who spoke on the issue yesterday said President Buhari had no powers to take the action he took in suspending the CJN from office. In her reaction, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi, PDP, Ekiti, South said, “Buhari is raping democracy, he is behaving as if it is a dictatorship or military government, he has gone against the Constitution of Nigeria. The constitution is very clear on how a CJN must be removed.” “ The person he has sworn in will swear in the new election Tribunal members knowing full well that this election is about justice, fairness, and transparency. This election must be free and fair. On his part, Chairman, South -East Senate Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, PDP, Abia South said, “ Buhari has no such powers, the CJN should ignore him. They want to cause anarchy in this country. There is nowhere in the constitution does any such power exist. We now have a full-blown dictatorship, and it is a shame on all those who support this government.” Also reacting, the Deputy Senate Minority leader, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, said, “ I am still in shock because this is unprecedented in the annals of Nigerian history. We need prayers.” In his reaction, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan, PDP, Akwa North East said, “ this is unimaginable, unthinkable, undemocratic in a democracy where we have a constitution, a country where the constitution is very clear on the removal of a CJN at any time, this is unacceptable.” On his part, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, PDP, Kwara South said, “ it is about creating anarchy, the whole world is watching us, this government is lawless, and we have been crying out loud that this is the type of government we are having. I do not know what they relied on; it will not stand, it is an abuse of the constitution and a rape of democracy.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/01/olawepo-hashim-wants-buhari-impeached-sanctions-on-aides-and-their-families/amp/ |

11 QUICK FACTS ABOUT 2019 ELECTION * Nigeria has 91 political parties. Of this number, 23 are new, recently registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in August 2018 * Most of these parties are only operational on paper, yet boasts of popularity that can only be imagined. Majority of them have never won elective positions into any of the three tiers of government *The two dominant political parties in the current dispensation remain the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party *Information gleaned from an Independent National Electoral, INEC, publication signed by Mrs. O. O. Babalola, a director revealed that the People’s Trust (PT) political party, which is fielding Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as its presidential candidate, has emerged top amongst the recently registered political parties fielding candidates for the presidential and national assembly elections *In our present circumstance as well, we may not absolutely deny the forces represented by candidates like Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, Kingsley Moghalu, Oby Ezekwesili, Omoyele Sowore, amongst others. Olawepo-Hashim has particularly being celebrated as the Third Force candidate *The emerging forces can be represented from two perspectives. The first is the trend of the youthful and somewhat much more urbane, contemporary candidatures of Olawepo-Hashim, Ezekwesili, Moghalu, Sowore, and Fela Durotoye, and some others. The second trend is the equally educated, informed and futuristic set of leaders. They are older, and obviously belong to a former generation, given their past exposures. They include the likes of Profs. Jerry Gana and Yemi Osinbajo. Then add some former governors like Donald Duke and Orji Uzor Kalu * In the first quarter of 2018, the idea of having a third force party that would stand up to the status quo was thrown around by notable political figures and headed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo * The third force proponents converged under the banner of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), and were made up of a loose membership of people interested in the development of Nigeria. They planned on transforming into a political party * Many of the recently registered political parties with young presidential candidates gunning for the number one seat were inspired by this idea of replacing the old guards in politics with young minds and fresh ideas but failed to live by Obasanjo’s most important condition: Unite A policy that was introduced at the start of the current democratic dispensation in 1998 and was intended to assist the parties function optimally and increase political parties amongst the citizens began to be abused by leadership of the different political parties *Until about eight years ago, the federal government was still paying subventions to registered parties. This easy money meant that aside seeing their logos on ballot papers, most of the registered political parties were seasonal parties, appearing every four years * It became a trend for political jobbers to register a political party, then wait for election to receive subvention from the government. Once that was done, they take the money and make no efforts to win. Political parties, for these people, was purely a platform for making easy money. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2019/01/14/is-political-third-force-a-mirage/ |
