Expect God’s wrath on corrupt public officers – Bishop By Dare Adekanmbi - 30.07.2008 The Bishop of the Diocese of Ekiti Oke An glican Communion, Right Reverend Olatunde Olubowale, has said public officers, who steal public funds meant for the benefits of the citizens, are invoking woes and wrath of God on themselves. Bishop Olatunde made the statement during a press conference held at the Synod ground in Iye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, recently. The cleric, who flayed the government for the level of poverty in the country in spite of the country’s abundant human and natural resources, wondered why there was no commensurate level of development with the funds that accrued to all the tiers of government as monthly allocations. “Our government announces huge budgets but they seem to operate only on foreign aids for it is, invariably, the projects that enjoy foreign aids or partnership that attract visible implementation. Others fizzle out as soon as Nigerians’ hope is raised in rhetorics,” the bishop said. While speaking on the probe panels set up by the National Assembly to scrutinise the past activities of ministeries, departments and agencies, Bishop Olatunde remarked that probes would not revive abandoned projects, adding that the government was not learning from either the probes or the problems that had led to them. source: http://www.tribune.com.ng/30072008/news/news23.html |

Edo installs solar-powered traffic lights in Benin City 23 July, 2008 02:00:00 IDRIS UMAR MOMOH Font size: Edo State government has installed solar-powered traffic lights in Benin City, the state capital. The traffic lights, designed and installed by Atiode Solar Systems Limited, an indigenous company, are aimed to control the present chaotic state of traffic at strategic junctions in Benin City. Speaking with Business Day in Benin City, chief executive officer of the company, Fred Atiomo, praised Governor Oserheimen Osunbor for giving his company the break it needed to be the first company to successfully install solar- powered traffic lights in the region. Atiomo disclosed that the company was 100 percent Nigerian firm and second in Africa to a firm in South Africa, which has a considerable experience in the installation and maintenance of similar projects. The chief executive officer, who stated that the solar-powered traffic lights was presently being hoisted in Benin City at Adesogbe/Airport road junction, by the Oba Palace, however noted that as a result of its renewable source of energy, which is gotten from the sun, the system was not subject to human distortions compared with hydro-electric or thermal energy. According to him, under the pilot scheme the company would install and maintain for a period of two years various solar-powered traffic lights at strategic junctions in the state capital. "The scheme also introduced solar- powered road markings and pedestrian crossing lights at the junction where the traffic lights are installed. For traffic lights, once they are switched on they can supply light uninterrupted as both the solar panels and the signal heads have longer lifespan of seven years or more due to the use of light emission diode (LED). The only maintenance they require is occasional cleaning of the solar panels," he stated source:http://www.businessdayonline.com/energy/13460.html |

North not a parasite - Govs Hassan Ibrahim, Kaduna - 29.07.2008 The 19 Northern state governors on Monday said the North is not a parasite on the other regions in the country, saying it had the capacity to survive on its own through agriculture and education. Speaking at the first Northern Agricultural Summit held at the Arewa House, Kaduna, Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum and governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, said even without the oil revenue, the North could survive on its own once it was able to develop the agriculture sector. He said it was sad that some people had the notion that Northerners were parasites who depended on oil from the Niger Delta, saying it was an international conspiracy against the North which led to the collapse of its industries. According to him,”the future of the North lies in our hands, and we should today begin to shape her destiny. As a Nigerian of Northern extraction, I feel very unhappy when someone describes me as a parasite because of oil, when I know I have the capacity to solve my problems, and probably do even better through agriculture and education.” source:http://www.tribune.com.ng/29072008/news/news23.html |
Kidnappings facilitated by relatives of victims — Okiro By Mudiaga Affe Published: Tuesday, 29 Jul 2008 The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, on Sunday said that tracking down kidnappers was difficult in the country because of the involvement of relatives or close associates of victims, and lack of cooperation from telecommunication companies. Skip to next paragraph File Mike Okiro Okiro also specified the vehicle documents that policemen at check-points should legitimately request from motorists. He said these at a grand house reception organised in his honour by the proprietor of the Niteshift Coliseum, Mr. Ken-Calebs Olumese, in Lagos. Okiro regretted that kidnapping, which was started by militants in the Niger Delta, had been hijacked by criminals and spread to other parts of the country. He said that the police had been working round the clock to ensure that the situation was brought under control. He added that investigations showed that about 70 per cent of recent cases of kidnapping indicated that the relatives, close friends, housemaids or drivers of victims had direct links with the kidnappers source:http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200807292321442 |

Expatriates leave N-Delta enmasse!38 firms close shop, Rivers chamber of commerce worried Written by GEORGE ONAH Saturday, 26 July 2008 , Exodus of expatriates has hit Rivers State amid the Niger Delta crisis NO fewer than 38 manufacturing, oil servicing and other companies have packed and left Rivers State in the last five years following the upsurge in violence in the state and the Niger Delta. In spite of the violence, however, “some other companies of American and French origin have moved into the state to do business.” Of particular note among those who have vacated the city are the Lebanese who were over 140 families doing business in Port Harcourt, but less than 30 of the families are now left in the state. Those who have also deserted the city are Arabs of the Middle East and of Africa and Asians too. Even those businesses that have stayed back have found out that productivity is very low. This is because these are services that support manufacturing businesses to produce. It follows then that once these supporting businesses are moving away, the companies on ground cannot produce to capacity. Most of the businesses are functioning at between forty and fifty per cent installed capacity. The statistics of movement of the companies were made available to Sunday Vanguard by the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, PHACCIMA. The organization argued: “Federal Government is tacitly acquiescing to relocation of facilities from particularly the oil and gas sub-sector. source:http://www.vanguardngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13028&Itemid=42 |
