Says, ‘Change begins with me’ not an APC Slogan

The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has lamented the growing lack of patriotism among Nigerians, saying many citizens today can neither sing the National Anthem nor recite the National Pledge.

This was as the government also clarified its decision to launch the “Change begins with me” campaign in September 2016, saying the move was not an attempt to ingrain the change mantra of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC in the minds of Nigerians, but that the programme was designed without any partisan consideration.

Lai Mohammed stated this Thursday in Abuja at the public presentation of the Mindshift Advocacy for Development Initiative – an organization advocating for value-reorientation and attitudinal change among Nigerians.

The minister who was represented by a Director in the ministry, Mr Samuel Soughul, also lamented that in spite of the best attempts of President Muhammadu Buharito reposition the country for greatness, few bad eggs in the society continue to constitute a clog in the wheel.

“I think we are making progress. I won’t say all, there are few bad eggs in our society that forming the clog in the wheel of our progress. Let’s start from basics. If you love your country, you must love anything that is associated with your country. You love your country and you love your countrymen, you love the paraphernalia of the state.

“The National Anthem, some of us cannot read, cannot recite, cannot write. Is it the currency of the country, Naira that we abuse? Is it the Constitution that we do not obey its provisions? We have a lot to say but the future is still bright.”

Mohammed continued: “In 1976, there was a desire by Prof. Felicia Adewole to come up with a contract for citizens to sign with their country, Nigeria and she made a draft which was proved right. That is what we have today as a National Pledge. By following that Pledge, we will not have turbulence around our homes, we will not need bullet-proof vehicles, we will be our brother’s keeper.

“Our tertiary institutions, the award certificates based on the fact that the graduands have been ‘found worthy in character and learning’. Now, President Muhammadu Buhari, having viewed this with concerns, on Thursday, September 8 2016, launched a value-reorientation campaign ‘Change begins with me’. This campaign is not a slogan and it should not be associated with party slogan as such. It is a patriotic slogan and campaign – a value-reorientation campaign. What it means is that the change we want should start with us instead of pointing accusing fingers,” Mohammed said.

A fresh robbery attack at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, (IBBU) Lapai in Niger State has left two students seriously injured. However, seven arrests have also been made.

The recent attack, which happened in the wee hours of Monday, left one of the victims, a 100 Level student of Computer Science with a deep cut in his head and one of the suspects (student too) stabbed on the stomach.

According to the eyewitnesses, who was also a victim said: “The robbers came around 1 am. Out of the ten rooms, they robbed eight rooms. Abdulhadi was attacked by the robbers and possibly in self defense, he stabbed one of them in the stomach. The other robber used a cutlass on his head and they all ran away.

Men of the Ogun state police command have arrested a 43-year-old man, Oluwole Bamidele, for raping a 6-year-old minor. The suspect allegedly committed the crime around 12: 45p.m last Friday after luring the girl into his room at Kayode Street in the Agoro area of Agbado.

Bamidele, who is a co-tenant of her parent, carefully monitored her mother and ensured that she had gone out to give clothes to her tailor before luring the victim. On interrogation, the suspect confessed committing the crime.

Reacting to the criticism, MC Oluomo said he did not attend the event again as he is currently in Abuja attending to urgent matters. He wondered why Nigerians would not want to give an opportunity to a person like him.

MC Oluomo said ;

“I don’t know the reason people are going against the invitation because the people who invited him knew what they wanted him to say. If he had gone there and said something wrong, then the critical reactions would have been justified.

“Is it a crime not to be educated? Should people who did not go to school go and commit suicide? I think that if someone did not go to school and has a large following, it is enough reason for people to invite him to occasions. Those who invited him for the event had a strong reason for doing it.

“People are judging MC Oluomo based on hearsay. You don’t judge a book by its cover. We are also making efforts to change the negative impression people have about him.”

A Nigerian lady who seems fed up with the abuses she has allegedly been subjected to since she was little by her brother, got him arrested over the act which she said her parents saw nothing wrong in.

The lady identified as Daisy Okudu further claimed that she has been threatened by her relatives since she wrote about being assaulted by her brother on Facebook.

Former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has lost her father, Obi (Prof) Chukwuka Okonjo, Obi of Ogwashi Uku, Aniocha South L.G.A, Delta State. His Royal Majesty Obi (Prof) Chukuka Okonjo died at the age of 91 in the United States of America.

The late monarch, who was a professor of mathematics, ascended the throne of his ancestors in 2007. He obtained his A’ levels as an external student of the University of London before proceeding to United States of America where he bagged two degrees in Economics and History from University of Maryland, College Park and an MBA from University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is pursuing a doctorate in Business Administration from University of Paris, in France.
