Islam for Muslims / Re: 4 Practical Tips For Healthy Ramadan Fasting by binajiya(m): 2:46pm On Jun 05, 2016
[quote author=Aminat508 post=46297314]

Muslims view the fasting month of Ramadan with much sanctity and honor. The fasting month brings about a personal reflection of where we are, what we have done and where we hope to go. Many Muslims feel a heightened sense of excitement as well as anxiety. In this state of excitement, we try our best to welcome in the fasting month with as much preparation as possible. However, at times, we tend to forget the little things. Here are some practical tips to fasting during this blessed month.

1. During Ramadan, it is important to make a serious conviction to follow the Ramadan routine.

Wake up before dawn, have the pre-dawn breakfast (suhoor) and perform the dawn prayers (fajr). This routine must be ingrained in your mind, body and soul. It is common to have a boost of faith during the early days of Ramadan. The spiritual energy is vibrant and you feel that it is easy to meet Ramadan head on. Then, we may get weak and lose our conviction. We may get lazy and tell ourselves that we have another 3 weeks or so to get back on track. It is best to stay the course and be moderate.

2. Reduce sodium in your diet, especially during suhoor.

This will help to reduce your urge to drink throughout the day. Extreme foods should be avoided as well. These include super spicy dishes (again to reduce the urge to drink after suhoor), high sugar content (to avoid the ‘crash and burn’ feeling), fatty foods and anything else that normally disagrees with you. Try to include foods that have high fiber content (for easy digestion) and that are ‘filling’. It’s important to eat ‘complex carbohydrates’ as they break down slowly. These include grains and seeds like barley, wheat, oats, millet, semolina, beans, lentils, wholemeal flour, and unpolished rice. Lots of fruits and vegetables are not only healthy but also provide a good balance to your meals. These will help sustain yourself until you break your fast. If you are already taking multi-vitamin supplements, don’t stop.

Check with a health advisor if you plan to start a new multi-vitamin supplement. Don’t look far to find a vital health supplement. Dates are abundant throughout the year and especially during Ramadan. Dates are known to provide a wide range of essential nutrients and potential health benefits.

Another important tip: hydrate! Drink lots of water in the night and before dawn. During suhoor, remember that coffee and tea are known to be diuretics. This could cause you to lose fluids faster.

3. Don’t binge.

Having an empty stomach during the day and then gorging yourself at night can cause lethargy and other gastrointestinal discomforts. The last thing you need is a sloth-like behavior at night and then you miss the precious dawn breakfast.

4. Bonus tip: meet the community.

Many mosques hold community iftar sessions on weekends. Meeting the community has numerous benefits including hearing about recipe tips, community events and hopefully some iftar invites

Education / Re: 10 Courses In Universities That No Longer Have Clear Career Paths by binajiya(m): 3:42pm On May 21, 2016
Rapmoney:
Please, before you proceed, know that this post is not meant to put anybody's spirit down or to underrate anyone's course of study. It is an observation and it is basically limited to our society; it does not extend to the environment outside.

Every year, an army of young people seek to gain admission into the numerous universities spread across the country. One thing pertinent here, is the fact that many of these young people just want to get there, obtain whatever degree they can (irrespective of the class of degree) and rush to the labour market to sell whatever knowledge they feel they have obtained!!! People mostly think of working and earning money without thinking of 'career'. In the end, they reluctantly settle for UNDEREMPLOYMENT!!! When you don't have a clear career-path to grow in, you may find yourself in just anywhere, whether you like it or not cool Below are some courses in our universities that have slowly lost institutions that can support their career paths:

1) Political Science/Public Administration: Seriously speaking, you can hardly find a clear career path under these courses in Nigeria. Many people I personally know who studied these courses have started doing 'anything' to survive! Except you are studying for just knowledge or you have other businesses or line of interests to engage yourself in, these two courses are not what anyone should bank on as career in these present days. Apart from the education sector, you may not be able to grow your career in the few insitutions aligned to these courses if you are not 'connected'!!!

2) Microbiology: Most graduates of this course have become so frustrated in life to an extent where some of them have gotten trapped with teaching Biology in little mushroom private schools where they are paid 12,000 Naira monthly! grin You can hardly differentiate such schools from poultry farms! One Microbiologist asked me to assist her get placement in a media house. She told me that she liked working as a presenter in a radio station! The first thing that came to my mind is, 'Why didn't you study Mass Communication or Information Technology in the Ivory Tower?'

3) Parasitology and Entomology: I don't even know what to say at this junction! cool

4) Philosophy: Despite the fact that this subject gave birth to all other studies as we have been told, it is becoming more and more irrelevant as the days go by. Apart from teaching or lecturing...or in religious institutions, this course has no clear career path in Nigeria.

5) History & International Relations: If you are not an enterprising person, talented or already in a seperate business, banking on this course may spell doom for you! Your services are mostly needed in academic institutions.

6) Zoology: In a society where even endangered species of animals are flagrantly killed and posted on-line with so much impunity grin, I wonder what the future of zoologists would look like career-wise How many zoo or animal reserves do we have?

7) Archeology: I wonder what's up in your mind if you decide to study this course! We no longer have strong institutions that can support archeology which happens to be the study of ancient things! A graduate of Archeology might find himself/herself doing just 'anything' sooner than later wink

8. Religious Studies cool

9) Anthropology: Don't even think of establishing and growing a career in Nigeria with this!

10) Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa Education: In a society where our indigenous languages are gradually 'suffering' in the hands of our young ones, especially, in the cities, and the government and cultural institutions are doing almost nothing to correct it, I wonder what career path graduates of these courses would hope for, except in the academic world!

Before you criticize this post, consider the introduction of the post.
what of geography

Don't be afraid that your life might END, instead ask yourself whether it would ever START!!!

Good day everyone!

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has granted national licence to Jaiz Bank Plc, the Chairman of the bank, Alhaji Umar Mutallab, has said.
Speaking, yesterday, when the board and management of the bank visited the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar in Abuja, Mutallab said the national licence would enable the bank to roll out its services all over the country.

He said the CBN issued the licence to the bank last week, adding that the development marked the beginning of a new era in the operations of the bank.
Mutallab said that Jaiz Bank group had also acquired the takaful insurance licence and would soon begin operation.
He said the bank had commenced its zakat and waqaf programme.
He said that the bank was currently operating in 13 states with about 26 branches, adding that in about three years from now, the bank would have branches 36 states and FCT.
Speaking, Sultan Saád Abubakar commended the board and the management of the bank, saying that recording what the bank has achieved in short period was a good sign for Islamic banking in the country.
MashaAllah
“Never let Jaiz go down,” the sultan urged the bank’s officials.
