Politics / Re: EFCC Arrests Abba Moro, Others Over 2014 Immigration by biookuta(m): 6:44am On Feb 23, 2016
Titilayodeji13:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arrested a former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, over the Nigerian Immigration recruitment scam in which no fewer than 20 job seekers died.
Also arrested by the anti-graft agency were former Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Anaesthesia Nwaobia, and a deputy director who allegedly facilitated the scam.

A source at the commission, who cannot be named because she is not authorised to speak on the matter, told PREMIUM TIMES the three suspects were picked up in the evening.

“They were brought into the commission’s headquarters today and will be arraigned on a 12-count charge in the Federal High Court Abuja on Tuesday,” the source said.

Some of the charges against Mr. Moro and his colleagues include obtaining by false pretence, procurement offences, corrupt practices and money laundering.

At least nine job seekers died on March 15, 2014 at the Abuja National Stadium while scrambling to secure seats for a recruitment test into the Nigerian Immigration Service.

The stampede ensued after the over 200,000 job seekers scrambled through a poorly organized barricade at the stadium.

In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, four applicants died from the stampede while 12 others sustained injuries and were rushed to Rivers government-owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital.

After the March 15 tragedy, several Nigerians demanded the resignation or dismissal of Mr. Moro and the Comptroller-General of Immigration, David Parradang, as well as their criminal prosecution for involuntary homicide.

They were accused of putting in place a sham recruitment process that enabled the interior ministry to extort at least N520 million in compulsory levy imposed on applicants.

The minister, who initially blamed impatience and refusal by applicants to abide by instructions for the tragedy, later accepted responsibility for the incident.
He, however, refused to step down.
Speaking on a Channels TV’s breakfast programme, Sunrise, on October 20, 2014, Mr. Moro made it clear he would not resign, saying he would rather stay put in office to clear the mess caused by the incidence.
“The point at which we are now is not about resignation. That time has gone,” Mr. Morro said in response to a question over why he refused to quit.
“At the time (people were calling for his resignation), I think emotions were very high. I was in the eye of a storm.

“At that time, a lot of options were on the table… The issue is do you resign or do you stay to sort out the problem that have been created?
“I decided that staying and mopping up the mess caused by the lack of proper implementation of our plans is better. That’s the point we are now.”
The minister said Nigerians should consider the tragedy as an accident which he too did not plan for or envisage.
“I also have families. I didn’t set out on that journey knowing that accident would occur that would lead to the death of human beings.
“We took everything into proper perspective. If we had succeeded, a few Nigerians would have congratulated us for the job well done.”

JoeCutie:
My points exactly!!!

Nigeria's integrity has fallen so low that we don't even believe in ourselves again. We always believe in supernatural powers. Miracles. Compare Hollywood and Nollywood movies, for instance. In Hollywood, they fight for themselves no matter what. In Nollywood, we cry and the 'God' of Nigerian movies fights for us. That's the typical Nigerian mentality, yet we always claim to be the best. It's so unfortunate. More than 200 school girls went missing in Chibok and Nigeria declared fasting and prayers. What a shame! In a real nation, with their intelligence and technology, it wouldn't take more than 2 weeks before those girls are found. That's why we believe that a Pastor must be our VP before things fall into place. What a country!

In Nigeria, everybody wants miracle, but it's so unfortunate that the world does not work that way. We need to grow up and pull ourselves clear of religiousness. This mentality is keeping us down as it's been passed down to generations yet unborn. Earlier before now, Nigerians (and indeed, Africans) were known for their dogged nature; their pride in hardworking. Today, everything has changed. Nobody wants to work, talk more of doing it hard. And trust Nigerians and their very timid and derogatory response to these kind of 'miracles', people would flock the street to hawk bread and see if 'God would pick their calls'. Pathetic!

I've always thought this to myself, but owing to how naïve Nigerians are, and how much they love to bash people, I kept it to myself, but reading this, I've been re-inspired. I don't like this Jumoke's success story. No doubt, I'm happy for her. But her story is nothing to inspire me. And until Nigerians learn to curb the way they call on God, and use their nature-given intelligence to their advantage, themselves, I'm afraid Nigeria is always going to be stagnant. America didn't get to where they are by clinging to 'God' and waiting for miracles. They do not wait for miracles to happen. They make 'miracles' happen. They fight for themselves. That's why I say that Religion is the major setback we have in this country, cos our problems are still based on the kind of mentality we revel on. Wonder why the so called "men of God" all fly in private planes while we, their followers can't even buy fuel ourselves? We are on the ground, and we are the ones holding ourselves down there.

This guy's post is the best I've read since I joined Nairaland, and I'm happy I spent time to read it

SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY, MOHAMMADU BUHARI PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE OCCASION OF THE RECEPTION FOR NIGERIAN ATHLETES AND OFFICIALS WHO DID THE NATION PROUD AT INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS, BANQUET HALL, PRESIDENTIAL VILLA, ABUJA. JANUARY 21, 2016.

COURTESIES

It gladdens my heart to play host to our dear athletes and officials who have consistently done the nation proud at various international competitions.

Nigerian athletes, despite prevailing challenges, have always proven to the rest of the world that the Nigerian spirit is indomitable.

On behalf of all Nigerians, I wish to specially express my appreciation and indeed that of the nation to our athletes and officials for the consistency, determination, willpower and penchant for success being witnessed in the sports sector in recent times. I urge the managers of this sector to keep up the momentum.

I wish to assure you that the Federal Government of Nigeria would not relent in its efforts to ensure that our sportsmen and women continue to excel in international competitions. I am particularly concerned about our participation at the forthcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games. We must not allow a repetition of the unsavoury experience at the London 2012 Olympics where Nigerian athletes failed to make it to the podium.

This Administration’s policy of “change” must reflect in the way we do things either as individuals or institutions. We must strive to be prudent in the way we manage our time, financial and material resources to ensure victory at the next Olympics. We must aim for optimal performance at all international competitions.

Your Excellencies, Great Nigerian Athletes, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, I wish to remark that today’s event is very special to me because, Almighty Allah has, in His infinite mercies and love, kept me alive to this day and granted me the privilege of being able to fulfill my promise in 1985, to reward the winners of the maiden edition of the FIFA U-17 World Championship.

The reason for the 30 years delay is well known. It is however sad to note that a member of the 1985 Golden Eaglets is not here with us today. Please join me in observing a one-minute silence in honour of Kingsley Aikhionbare who died in London, in 1996.

It is a well known fact that so much water has passed under the bridge between 1985 and now. The State governments that were to implement most of the pledges to the players and officials have changed hands so many times under different dispensations and political parties.

In line with our belief that the “labour of our heroes shall not be in vain” we will be saying thank you to our 1985 Golden Eaglets’ players and officials by using the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports template for rewarding outstanding athletes.

As you are all aware, the financial resources of our nation have been dwindling since last year. Hence what we are offering you today, is not payment or compensation for winning laurels for your country, rather, it is a token of appreciation for your efforts and patriotism while competing for your fatherland.

In this connection, I have the honour, on behalf of the Government and sports loving Nigerians to announce the following as token of our appreciation to our sports ambassadors:

Is really true God gives love and peace of mind alone, I think it is high time we ladies sit down and really think hard about our prospective about marriage? Are you getting married cos of pressures from friends or family or cos you have an idealistic view about marriage or cos all your friends are getting married? Till you have a realistic and factual reasons for getting married, you can never be happy. Dont marry out of desperation, its not a must to marry and I haven't seen in the Bible that it is a must.

Please allow me to tell you a true life story that happened in my compound, this girl got married to a man, she already have a child outside wedlock. Days after marriage, there was no peace as they fight day and night. To our shock, a highly materialistic celebrated marriage turned to the worst just 2 months.

The lady said she was tired and can't cope any longer, behold, we thought it was something that could be remedy but she left to her father's house and took poison and died. Yes, she did. Its no friction or joke, this is true life story.

Let's we ladies be careful, desperation will make us lose focus on our own God ordain husband. Marriage no be by force o. If I get married or not, that's not my top priority, all I want from Jehovah is happiness and please of mind cos it far out weight everything.
but remember dat somebody gave birth to u ooo sorry to say if ur parents said dat marriage is not by force I don't think u will be in dis world please don't discourage others @ d expense of yours ehn?? please ladies get marry in tym so dat ur children will not suffer. in ur friction dat lacks faith .
