Written by: mohammed dalhatu

Head coach of the Nigeria U-17 team Manu Garba says American born Lateef Omidiji Jr. is free to come and train with the U-17 team of Nigeria who are presently in camp ahead of their Africa youth qualifiers.

Lateef currently plays for the U-14 team of second division Dutch side Dordrecht and was recently scouted by the head coach of Nigeria U-15 side Danladi Nasidi but Manu Garba head coach of the Nigeria U-17 says the youngster is free to come and train with his team.

The talented teen met with stars of the Super Eagles prior to their friendly game against Luxembourg few weeks after pledging his international future to Nigeria ahead of the USA.

12 year old Omidiji Jr. has been linked with Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG in the past one week and Manu in a chat with our correspondent confirmed he has read about his talents but will like to see him at close quarters.

“I have read some really nice things about him, we will like to let him know that he can come and train with us if he wants to and if he is better than what we have, why not, some will say he is just 12, but I took a 14 year old (Habib Makanjuola) to the U-17 World cup in 2013”

Nigeria's Flying Eagles dump Burundi to set up Sudan showdown

Flying Eagles flew past Burundi

by Samm Audu

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles defeated their counterparts from Burundi 2-1 to qualify for an U20 AFCON qualifying final playoff against Sudan next month on a 3-1 aggregate.

The winners between Nigeria and Sudan will book a place at next year’s U20 AFCON final tournament in Zambia.

Victor Osimhen scored from the penalty spot after 73 minutes to put the Flying Eagles in front after Samuel Chukwueze was fouled inside the box.

Skipper Kelechi Nwakali made it 2-0 in the 81stminute, when he drove home a free kick from 23 yards.

However, Burundi pulled a goal back a minute from full time when Ndikumana Magloire cashed in on laxity in the Flying Eagles defence to make hay.

Nigeria won the first leg 1-0 in Bujumbura last month.

The fans at the UJ Esuene Stadium in the coastal town of Calabar were entertained by the passing game of the Flying Eagles, who though struggled to put the ball in the back of the net.

The home team enjoyed the better chances to go in front in this qualifier.

As early as the third minute, Tunisia-based defender Zakari missed an open goal and four minutes later, Osimhen’s effort was cleared off the goal line.

The Flying Eagles continued to pile on the pressure in search of a goal and in the 31stminute match winner in the first encounter Chukwudi Agor thought he had finally broken the deadlock, but the referee cancelled the effort for offside.

The Burundi goalkeeper Moussa Omar then pulled off a big save in the 38thminute, when he kept out a shot from the edge of the box.

And minutes later, skipper Kelechi Nwakali’s rocket misses narrowly.

The misses continued in the second half with Zakari’s header missing by the whisker on 59 minutes

However, late goals by Osimhen and Nwakali were enough to turn back Burundi and set up a clash with Sudan on July 8.

American-Born Lateef Omidiji Jr Ready To Justify Wonderkid Tag; Will Train With Nigeria U17s If...

FC Dordrecht superkid Lateef Omidiji Jr will not turn down the opportunity to train with the Nigeria U17s ahead of their Africa U17 Nations Cup qualifier against Niger Republic if he is officially invited to the squad, his father has disclosed.

Coach Manu Garba is presently running the rule over some of the outstanding youngsters in the country in Abuja, and local media claimed on Friday that he has thrown a challenge to the striker to justify his wonderkid tag by attending the screening exercise.

“I have not been in contact with Manu Garba although I am a huge fan of his work and know he’s one of the most accomplished coaches in Nigeria, ” Lateef Omidiji Sr said to allnigeriasoccer.com.

“It will be an honor for my son to get an invite. The U13/U15 coach - Coach Danladi Nasidi has definitely scouted him and seen him play and is a huge admirer of Lateef jr.

“Coach Nasidi actually watched him play seven matches in a tournament in Las Vegas.”

Lateef Omidiji Sr added that it will be a major statement from the Nigeria Football Federation if his 12-year-old son is officially called up to train with the squad.

“I also think that if he is invited to the U17s, it’ll be a major statement from the NFF, from the board to the administrators to the coaches that the youth is the future and I think both Nigeria and the world would take notice of that statement.

“Is it probable that he gets an invite to try out for the U17s? I don’t think so. Would it be welcomed and would he be up to the task- absolutely. It’ll be an honor. ”

Lateef Omidiji Jr is eligible to represent the national teams of Nigeria and the United States but has pledged his international future to the Africans.

Charlton starlet turns down Nigeria opportunity
Jon Byrne 1 day ago

Young Charlton goalkeeper Edward Ogebur-Onaiwu has given the English Football Association a glimmer of hope after turning down the opportunity to join-up with a Nigerian training camp, reports in Nigeria confirm.

The teenage stopper had previously been invited to train with the Golden Eaglets and Nigeria’s Dream Team VI, having been scouted by coaches for some time, but he was unable to attend due to club commitments with the Addicks’ youth team.

Now the 15-year-old’s father has stepped in after an invitation to a further training camp, as Nigeria look to run the rule of some of their future hopefuls.

The website allnigeriasoccer.com reports: “Edward Ogbebor-Onaiwu’s dad has spoken with the coaching staff of the Golden Eaglets about him coming over to camp as they are picking the best players.

“However, he would not be coming over to Abuja. His dad wants him to be older before he starts representing Nigeria, he is too young.”

Despite their interest in the former Crystal Palace trainee, Ogebur-Onaiwu has never trained with the Golden Eaglets but he has met up with one of the England youth sides during a visit to St George’s Park, Burton in April 2015.

The highly-rated young stopper has been courted by Manchester United and this news could pave the way for him to represent England on a more permanent basis going forward.

U-2O AFCON qualifier: Flying Eagles plot Burundi’s fall in Calabar
Posted By: Ifeanyi Eduzor

Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles will this afternoon at the U.J Esuene Stadium, Calabar host Young Swallows of Burundi in the second round, second leg game of the 2017 U-20 African Cup of Nations qualifier

When both teams met two weeks ago at the Stade Prince Louis Rwagasore, Bujumbura, the Coach Emmanuel Amuneke led side defeated their host 1-0 giving the Nigerians hope of qualifying for the next round of the competition.

It is expected that the reigning African U-20 champions made up of mostly players that won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile last year, will have an easy game against their East African deopponents but Coach Amuneke has warned they are not going to underrate their opponents.

“We are going into this match with all seriousness it deserves because we want to win convincingly and move to the final round of the qualifiers.

“It is true that we won the first leg in Bujumbura, but the East Africans are capable of scoring against us here in Calabar and that is the reason why I have told my players to approach the game with all seriousness it deserves”, he said after his team were forced to a 1-1 draw by Unicem Rovers in a warm up match.

Nigeria U20s To Wear Black Armbands On Saturday In Honour Of Ex-Coach Keshi

The Flying Eagles will be wearing black armbands when they take on the Young Swallows of Burundi on Saturday afternoon in Calabar, after the death of former Nigeria skipper Stephen Keshi.

As a mark of respect for the former Anderlecht of Belgium central defender, the Nigeria U20s wore black armbands during Wednesday’s scrimmage against UNICEM Rovers.

Stephen Keshi was coach of the Flying Eagles at the 2001 African Youth Championship in Ethiopia but the squad parading the likes of Christian Obodo and Bartholomew Ogbeche could not progress to the knock out rounds of the tournament.

Kelechi Nwakali has vowed that the present team will beat Burundi in the second leg as their parting gift.

CRAZY! 300 'too old' players sent packing at Nigeria U17 screening

Tuesday May 31, 2016. 11:16
As many as 300 players were turned back on the first day of screening by the Nigeria U17 team after they were facially deemed to be over the age for the team.

“It was simply crazy – many old players simply descended on the training camp hoping to be picked for the team, but they were promptly sent away merely by looking at their hardened faces,” said one team official.

Coach Manu Garba began an open screening for a new set of Golden Eaglets in Abuja on Monday.

The exercise is expected to run for three weeks.

The five-time world champions are expected to begin qualification for next year’s U17 AFCON in Madagascar with a road trip to Niger in August.

Man City Striker Iheanacho Urges Omidiji Jr To Choose Nigeria Ahead Of USA, Holland

Kelechi Iheanacho (C) and Lateef Omidiji Jnr (R).

Manchester City wonderkid Kelechi Iheanacho has urged FC Dordrecht sensation Lateef Omidiji Jr to commit his international future to Nigeria ahead of the United States, where he was born, and country of residence Netherlands.

Lateef Omidiji Jr and his family made the 160-mile journey from Dordrecht to Luxembourg City earlier this week to offer their support and fraternize with the Super Eagles stars before the international friendly with the European minnows.

“Kelechi told him that Lateef Jr is known all over England and he thinks if he keeps it up, he has the skillset to follow in his footsteps but that comes with playing for Nigeria,” the striker’s dad Lateef Omidiji Sr told allnigeriasoccer.com.

“He said a lot of the officials in the NFF are aware of him as well and he’s heard nothing but great things.

“He also spoke with Troost-Ekong who used to play at Jr’s current academy- very encouraging- said keep doing what you’re doing, the sky is the limit. ”

Lateef Omidiji Jr’s elder sister Sophia Omotola Omidiji has already pledged her allegiance to Nigeria and her ambition is to represent the Falconets at the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea.

It is known that the United States Soccer Federation are interested in capping Lateef Omidiji Jr before the Nigerian Federation, and plan to invite him to one of their youth teams in the not too distant future.

ONAZI GATECRASH FLYING EAGLES TRAINING

Super Eagles and Lazio midfielder Eddy Onazi paid a surprise visit to the Flying Eagles during their morning training session ahead of their return leg tie against Burundi.

Onazi’s presence brought the training to a premature end as players of the team rushed to have photograph with the Super Eagles vice captain.

A group photograph was later taken with the 24 year old who 48 hours ago captained the Super Eagles to a 3-1 win over Luxembourg in the absence of Mikel Obi and Ahmed Musa.

The Lazio man played at the U-17 level for Nigeria in 2009 before making the step up to the main team where he has remained a main stay in the team since 2013.

His presence will galvanise the morale of the team ahead of their game in Calabar against Burundi as they push for qualification for next year Africa Youth Championship which will take place in Zambia.

Nigeria are defending champions of the tournament after winning the last edition in Senegal and the present team is made up of players from the Nigeria U-17 team that won the last world cup in Chile.

Amuneke Has It In Mind Flying Eagles Have To Play SIX More Games Before Qualifying For World Cup

Flying Eagles coach Emmanuel Amuneke has remained modest though his team is well placed to qualify for the third round of the Africa U20 Cup of Nations qualifiers after beating Burundi 1-0 in Bujumbura on Saturday.

The former Barcelona star has it in mind that the Nigeria U20s will have to play six more games, including two potential qualifiers against Sudan, before advancing to the 2017 Fifa Under 20 World Cup in South Korea.

“Success has many friends he said, today we are happy because we have brought smiles to the faces of Nigerians but as I have always emphasized, the journey is still very long and we must take each game as they come,” Amuneke told thenff.com.

“We are done with the first leg, we must return to work immediately ahead of the return leg.

“It is only when we have gone past that hurdle that we can breath a sigh of relief but even then, we still have Sudan to play in July to guarantee a spot at the CAF U-20 Nations cup in Zambia.”

The Nigeria U20s delegation returned to the country on Monday and will begin training for the second leg against the Swallows on Tuesday evening, before their trip to Calabar the following day.

The Flying Eagles defeated host, Burundi, 1-0 in Bujumbura on Saturday in the qualifier with the reverse fixture fixed for the U J Esuene Stadium in Calabar on June 11.

Amuneke remarked after the game that he was impressed with the performance of his boys, but praised the host country for giving Nigeria a good test.

Kingsley Michael, Samuel Chukwueze and captain Kelechi Nwakali all came close to putting Nigeria in the lead in the first half, but failed.

Defensive midfielder, Chukwudi Agor, scored the match’s only goal in the 68th minute as the Flying Eagles, made up largely of last year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup champions, dominated in all aspects.

The second half belonged to the Flying Eagles.

Nwakali and Chukwueze were impressive with some neat dribbles and runs and their efforts finally paid off as Chukwudi Agor capitalised on good work by the duo and sold a dummy before unleashing a grounder from the edge of the box that sailed into the opponents’ net for the only goal of the match.

The scoreline stood that way at full time and gave the few Nigerians present at the stadium cause to celebrate. The team is expected back in Nigeria today.

Nigerian Starlet Aramide Oteh Tipped To Shine For Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur Head of Player Development John McDermott has tipped Aramide Oteh to shine next season for the club after starring at the recently concluded Terborg Tournament in Holland.

The 17-year-old striker was in good form for Spurs during the competition, netting in games against Feyenoord and Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro as the Londoners failed to qualify for the semifinals.

“It’s been a very good experience for the boys over the last few days at a very tough tournament and I’m pleased that Christian Maghoma has continued his good form from the NextGen Series in Amsterdam last week,” McDermott told Spurs official website.

“Similarly, Aramide Oteh has hopefully given himself something to build on when we come back in July by having a good end to the season.”

Born at Lee Green in Lewisham, the teenager is eligible to represent the national teams of Nigeria and England but has no caps for the two nations at any level.

Aramide Oteh first started training with the White Hart Lane outfit at Under-8s level.

Nigerian-born Tomori says Chelsea debut a big step

Fikayo Tomori

Nigerian-born Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori has said he has taken a big step after he finally made his first-team debut for ‘The Blues’.

The 18-year-old came on for Branislav Ivanovic in the final Premier League game against Leicester City last weekend and he said it has been an amazing time for him.

“My debut capped it off brilliantly. It is a step in the right direction,” Tomori told Chelsea TV

“If at the start of the season someone had told me [this would happen], I would have said, ‘Steady…!

“But I am thankful to God that it has happened and I have taken every game as it comes, making sure I am developing in training and doing what I need to do to improve, and it has kept on getting better for me.”

The central defender is highly rated and while he currently plays for the Canada – where he was born – at the U20 level, he is still eligible for England, where he has lived since he was a toddler and also Nigeria, through his parents.

Esin Warns Flying Eagles Despite Win In Burundi

By James Agberebi:
Former Nigeria international Etim Esin has described the Flying Eagles’ 1-0 first leg second round away win against Burundi in Bujumbura in the 2017 U-20 Africa Cup of Nation as a good result.

Chukwudi Agor’s lone strike was the difference in the 68th minute in the first leg.

Reacting to the win, Esin, in a chat with Comple tesportsnigeria.com, hailed the impact Emmanuel Amuneke has had in the team since taking charge.

“It was a good result for the Flying Eagles because winning away from home especially in Africa, is never easy,” Esin told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

“And for Emmanuel Amuneke, I think he has done well since moving up from the Golden Eaglets. He has the experience and I believe he will go far with the team.”

The 1987 FIFA U-20 World Cup star however warned the Flying Eagles that the tie against Burundi is still open.

“The 1-0 away win is not a guarantee that the Flying Eagles have qualified for the next round.

“They should not allow the first leg result get into their heads because as we all know football is unpredictable,” he advised.

NFF CONFIRMS VENUE OF FLYING EAGLES RETURN LEG TIE AGAINST BURUNDI

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has picked the UJ Eusene Stadium in Calabar, located in Cross River State Nigeria as the city to host Nigeria U-20s return leg tie against Burundi.

A solitary goal from Chukwudi Agor gave the Nigerian lads made up of most of the players who won the last U-17 World Youth Championship in Chile a 1-0 victory in Bujumbura, a scoreline they will now have to defend in Calabar in a fortnight.

Owngoalnigeria.com gathered the team will leave Burundi tomorrow enroute Ethiopia where they will sleep over before continuing their journey to Nigeria.

They are expected to arrive Nigeria on Monday evening and training for the return leg will commence the next day at the FIFA goal project before they will proceed to Calabar, four days to the tie against Burundi.

TOP FIVE PERFOMERS IN FLYING EAGLES WIN OVER BURUNDI

Owngoalnigeria.com take a look at the five players who were on top of their game in the Nigeria U-20s 1-0 victory over Burundi in Bujumbura in the 2017 African Youth Championship qualifiers.

Lukman Zakari: Deserve a mention for starting the move that lead to the goal scored by Nigeria, calm and composed in bringing the ball out from the back and alongside Ejike Ikwu ensured goalkepper Akpan Udoh had little to do in the encounter.

Orji Okonkwo: He contributed a lot defensively to the team and showed he has grown in leaps and bounds from the last U-17 World cup, Hard to shake off the ball, he was also an outlet used by the Flying Eagles to turn defence into attack especially in the first half.

Samuel Chukwueze: Guilty of squandering chances that would have killed the tie off from the first leg but still deserve a spot base on his all all round action play, neat first touch, smart dribbles and cross field passes, such a delight to watch.

Victor Osimhen: Set up Chukwudi Agor for the only goal of the game, as expected he was tightly marked by the defence line of the Burundians but still carved out openings for his other teammates with Kingsley Michael and Samuel Chukwueze guilty of wasting his effort in putting them through on goal.

Chukwudi Agor (MAN OF THE MATCH): The defensive midfield anchor of the Flying Eagles ended up as the unlikely goal scorer in the game but aside his goal, his all round play was exceptional, he was the leader from the middle, outshining the more illustrious and well known Kelechi Nwakali.
He covered almost every blade of the pitch, protected the back four and acted as the link between defence and attack, was simply unplayable, It would have been a travesty if any other person had scored the winner.
