HE people of Ekiti State may be in for another long period of waiting as the state governor, Mr. Segun Oni, on Wednesday, filed a cross petition, urging the state Election Petitions Tribunal to dismiss the petition filed by the Action Congress (AC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, challenging his (Oni) victory in the recent rerun poll. Fayemi had on June 2, submitted a 270-page petition before the tribunal, challenging the outcome of the rerun election held in 10 local government areas of the state on April 25 and May 5 respectively, saying that the election was marred by irregularities and violence in four wards in Ido/Osi Local Government Area and two others in Ijero Local Government Area. However, describing the petition filed by Fayemi as lacking in merit, frivolous and time wasting, Oni, in his petition, was also challenging results of election in Ado Local Government and Igbemo Ward in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state, claiming that the 16,612 votes credited to the AC in Ado Local Government in the 2007 governorship election were invalid, as there was no accreditation of voters before election was held in the council area. The governor, who arrived at the tribunal at about 12.15 p.m, to sign his statement on oath, said the petition filed by Fayemi was full of “lies, concoction and cock-and-bull stories.” In a 304-page reply to Fayemi’s petition, he accused Fayemi and the AC of fomenting crises before, during and after the rerun election, saying; “the petitioners had several strategies for the rerun election, which they wanted to win at all costs. Part of their strategies was to cause violence in the PDP strong- holds to ensure that elections were cancelled in those units and wards, where the 1st respondent had majority of lawful votes.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/25062009/news/news5.html |
THE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has accused the Minister of Interior, who is also the Head of the Presidential Panel on Amnesty for Militants in the Niger Delta, General Godwin Abbe (rtd), of trying to bribe them in order to get their cooperation in sharing the sum of N50 billion budgeted for the amnesty exercise. MEND made this allegation on Wednesday, but the minister, in a swift reaction, described the allegation as unfounded. The group, in a statement by its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, said: “It is a shame that the interior minister and his cohorts are offering bribes and incentives to militants in a desperate attempt to get our cooperation in sharing the N50 billion budgeted for the amnesty exercise. “While it is true that some of us will succumb to the temptation of money as Judas did, there are a majority that will remain steadfast in integrity, honour and a commitment to the people who cannot fight for their rights.” However, Abbe described the allegation as unfounded. He said the allegation was a mere ploy by the opponents of President Yar’Adua’s good intention to find a lasting solution to the lingering crisis in the region. Reacting to the allegation through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Tope Ajakaiye, Abbe added that his mandate as the leader of the presidential panel did not include any form of negotiation with the militants. He said: “The Minister of Interior was appointed by Mr. President to head a committee with the mandate to work out details on amnesty for militants granted by Yar’Adua. “As you are aware, the committee has since submitted its report to Mr. President and it was announced that President Yar’Adua will consult with the National Council of State and later make pronouncement on the implication of the amnesty issue. “I believe that the mandate of the committee does not include negotiating with militants and it could not have bribed anybody. “The allegation of bribery could be just a ploy by opponents of the gesture to tarnish the good intention of the Federal Government and should be discarded,” he said. He clarified that the N50 billion proposed as arms buyback from the militants, who voluntarily accepted the amnesty and surrendered their arms, should not be misconstrued as bribe to anyone of the militia group. Meanwhile, the militant leaders in the Niger Delta, who showed interest in the Federal Government’s amnesty plan, on Tuesday, have gone back on their promise to surrender their arms. This is just as the Isoko nation and the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) have called on the armed groups in the creeks of the Delta to embrace peace for meaningful development in the region. Tom Ateke, Bin Laden, Farah Dagogo, Soboma George and Boyloaf had, through their proxies, at a meeting with the Presidential Panel on Amnesty and Disarmament for Militants in the Niger Delta in Port Harcourt, indicated readiness to take advantage of the Federal Government’s offer. But MEND, on Wednesday, said the declaration by militant proxies the previous day was the Federal Government’s script. MEND, which claimed to be speaking for three of the five militant leaders — Farah Dagogo, Boyloaf and Soboma George — whom it referred to as its senior commanders, said it would not compromise its stand. “The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) categorically denies the orchestrated rumours being peddled by government agents and propagandists that MEND senior commanders, Farah Dagogo, Boyloaf and Soboma George, have agreed to receive amnesty by proxy as carried in some local newspapers. “We want to reassure our people who are looking up to us that we will never compromise our birthright for a price. “MEND is waiting to hear if President Yar’Adua has anything new to offer in his expected address on Thursday, June 25, before responding accordingly,” MEND said in its statement by spokesman, Jomo Gbomo. But one of the prominent ethnic nationalities in the oil-rich region, the Isoko nation, has sent an appeal to restive militant groups in the region to lay down their arms for the Federal Government to articulate its programme for the region. President General of the Isoko Progressive Union, Elder Peter Ovie Erebi, who made this call in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune in Port Harcourt, however, said the anger of the militants was generally shared in the entire region. Also lending its voice to the call for peace in the region, the ACF has called on the various armed groups in the region to take advantage of the amnesty arrangement by the Federal Government. In another development, President Umaru Yar’Adua said on Wednesday that leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo was never arrested by security agents even as the president assured that security will be restored in the Niger Delta area by December this year. Yar’Adua’s statement came few hours after his spokesman, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi told reporters that the president had ordered the release of the militant who was reported to have been arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on his return from a medical trip to Germany on Tuesday. According to Yar’Adua, Asari Dokubo was only invited by security agents for routine briefing and that he spent only few hours with the security operatives. The president assured that Niger Delta would be peaceful and stable by the end of this year, saying that his administration would achieve this, through the implementation of the amnesty package it would announce today and other measures put in place to stop the militancy in the oil-rich area. The president who came to brief State House reporters with the President of the Russian Federation, Mr. Dimitry Medvedev, who came to Nigeria on official visit having been invited by Yar’Adua, said he had discussed the security situation in the Niger Delta area with Medvedev. http://www.tribune.com.ng/25062009/news/news4.html |
POISONOUS rice from Asia, said to have been rejected by the Sierra Leonean government, has found its way into markets in Kaduna, Sokoto and other neighbouring states, consequently, causing fear within communities and government circles. A senior Customs official in Kaduna, Sani Bunza, told newsmen that although he was not allowed to talk to the media without permission, he was aware of complaints from the public of bad rice in the markets. In Sokoto State, the Voice of America (VOA), Hausa Service, monitored in Kaduna, on Wednesday, said Muslim and Christian clerics had condemned the importation of such rice and appealed to their adherents to distance themselves from anything that could cause harm to them. The National Security Adviser (NSA), General Sarki Mukhtar, it will be recalled, had raised the alarm over a shipment of about 6,000 tonnes of poisonous rice from Sierra Leone. According to him, intelligence report had indicated that some Nigerian businessmen had shown interest in buying the products earlier rejected by the Sierra Leonean government on account of its being unsafe for human consumption. But the rice eventually found its way into the country at the weekend. A NAFDAC official, who demanded anonymity, said that certain rice, with number LL62 from Asia, should be avoided by members of the public. Malam Sahabi Yahaya Kaura in Kaduna said that it was unfortunate that Nigerian businessmen, who might be richer than their Sierra Leonean counterparts, would be so greedy and unpatriotic to import the bad rice into Nigeria. He said that many unsuspecting customers, who bought the rice had to return it to the traders in Sheikh Gumi market, Kaduna, because it could not be easily cooked and tasted so bad in the mouth. Petty traders in the market accused the rice dealers of deliberately causing disharmony between them and their numerous customers by importing sub-standard rice, calling on the authorities to intervene. Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that many families in Kaduna had resorted to eating gari, tuwo, yam and other foods and were avoiding rice for now, except the very few that had old stock in their stores. Meanwhile, Mr. Udoekpo Ekpo, the unit head of NAFDAC in Enugu State, has raised the alarm over adulteration of palm oil in the state. Ekpo raised the alarm in Enugu, on Wednesday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The agency’s unit head said that NAFDAC discovered that palm oil in some markets in the state was mixed with chemical substances, such as anagodye and Sudan III. He warned that the substances had possibilities of causing cancer and other ailments. He said that NAFDAC had taken pains to visit all markets within the city, as well as rural areas, to warn against the adulteration. The agency’s official warned dealers to desist from ventures that were capable of causing dangerous ailments for consumers. He disclosed that the agency’s surveillance team had been placed on the alert to check their excesses. On how the adulterated palm oil could be identified, Ekpo said: “the unfortunate thing is that it will be difficult to identify this product by mere looking at it.” http://www.tribune.com.ng/25062009/news/news1.html |

Atheism is a mental illness because it is nothing more than a cry for attention. The truth is atheism is a false idea because it is based on the false premise that orderliness does not require intelligent direction. Every argument with an atheist ends with this point. They can not overcome this one point, no matter how hard they try. I sometimes like visiting the James Randi Educational Foundation website just to duel with atheists. The JREF website is absolutely full of atheists from America, Canada, the UK, and other countries. Most of these atheists are extremely intelligent people, highly educated, and passionate about being an atheist, denying the existence of God, and viciously ridiculing folks like me who challenge their false belief. In reality, most of these people, claiming to be atheists, are really simply protesting against organized religion. I can understand their feelings of resentment and hostility towards organized religion because organized religion has been responsible for so much pain and suffering for so long. However, when they deny the existence of the intelligence necessary to produce the order all around us in plain view, I have to challenge this false belief. Sometimes their arrogance and vicious sarcasm makes you want to scream, but I find dueling with atheists has made me a more patient, accepting, and loving person. It forces you to work on your ability to be patient in the face of real ugliness. It's a lot like the old priest counselling the young priest in the movie The Exorcist. He told him the Devil would really try to make him so angry he would lose his cool. Therefore, the old priest advised the young priest to be patient, accepting, and calm in the face of the Devil's vicious ugliness. Atheists like to resort to their superior understanding of evolution and natural selection to explain how orderliness was established. They scoff at the notion that highly sophisticated, enormously complex systems and organisms could have possibly required any intelligent direction from some supreme being or intelligent designer. Please. I ask them to give me a single example of anything, outside of what they call nature, that came into being without intelligent direction. Of course, they can not. Everything manufactured by man required intelligent direction, right? Of course. They all believe that nature just happened by luck, by some totally mindless and random action of billions and billions of particles, travelling at high speeds, colliding together over billions and billions of years, and there you have it, NATURE. They ask, "Well if there is an intelligent being responsible for the universe, nature, and everything else, then where did it originate? Who or what produced this God of yours? Of course, I don't know all the answers. Most believe this intelligence we call God has always been here. But this is not the argument, is it? When you have them against the ropes, pounding on them real good, they try to change the argument. I just keep going back to my strength, the one thing I do know is that ORDER REQUIRES INTELLIGENT DIRECTION. It is really nothing more than common sense. This is the key to holding your own with even the most intelligent, well educated atheist. This key point really pisses them off because they simply can't figure out how to overcome it. Therefore, Intelligent Design is the only reasonable explanation for Nature, not some intelligence-free, mindless form of evolution. Where this Intelligent Designer came from, how it originated, I don't know. But again, all you need to know to establish the fact that atheism is a false idea is to know that ORDER REQUIRES INTELLIGENT DIRECTION. So, if you find yourself in a duel with an atheist, you can not lose. Just remain calm and stick to your guns. Generally, if you simply hold their feet to the fire and stick to this one point, the atheist will resort to name calling and quit first. It's like throwing holy water on Satan. It's fun! http://xtshare.com/toshare.php?Id=16413 |
