Kano Mother Accuses School Of Torturing 14-Yr-Old Daughter To Death For Missing Islamic prayer
A grieving mother in Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, has accused authorities of St. Louis Secondary School, a boarding/day institution, of subjecting her 14-year-old daughter, Maimuna, popularly known as Hanil, to a punishment that resulted in her death.
In a viral video circulating on social media, the distraught woman broke down in tears as she narrated how her daughter, Nihal Usaman Shamaki, allegedly collapsed after being forced to kneel under the scorching sun for hours for failing to attend an early morning Muslim prayer session.
According to the mother, the incident occurred last Saturday when the teenager was allegedly ordered to kneel on a rocky surface from morning until evening as punishment for missing the prayer.
She claimed that despite repeatedly begging for water while enduring the punishment, her daughter was allegedly denied access to drinking water until she eventually collapsed.
"[i]My daughter was pleading for water, but they refused to give her any," the mother said while sobbing. "She later collapsed and was rushed to the hospital where a doctor pronounced her dead."
The bereaved woman further alleged that school authorities initially concealed the true circumstances surrounding her daughter's death.
Investigative journalism service "At first, I had resigned to fate when they lied to me about the circumstances of her demise," she said. "But I prayed to God to expose what actually happened, and it's now clear that my daughter was tortured to death."
According to her, she was initially led to believe a different account of events until students who reportedly witnessed the incident came forward with information detailing what transpired.
She claimed eyewitnesses revealed that the deceased was subjected to the prolonged punishment under intense heat before she collapsed.
The mother also recounted her own ordeal on the day tragedy struck.
"That same Saturday, I was on admission receiving treatment when I received a call that my daughter had been admitted into an intensive care unit," she said. "I had to jump out of my own sick bed and rush there."
Maimuna, she added, was her first child and only daughter among three children.
"I have two boys. She was only 14 years old," the grieving mother lamented.
The allegations have triggered outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death and calling for those responsible to be held accountable if the claims are substantiated.

42 South African nationals removed from the State on chartered flight
A total of 42 individuals were removed from the State on a chartered flight back to their home country of South Africa.
The Garda National Immigration Bureau carried out an operation on Thursday removing individuals from the State on foot of deportation orders issued by the Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan.
As a result of this operation, 42 South African nationals were deported from Ireland.
This included 27 adults - nine men and 18 women - and 15 juveniles, who were all part of family groups.
All people were removed on a chartered flight which left Dublin on Thursday afternoon for South Africa, arriving on Friday morning.
Two of the individuals deported from the State had been convicted of offences in this jurisdiction.
Their removal supports ongoing operations by gardaí nationwide, a Garda spokesperson said.
“Gardaí continue to work closely with the Department of Justice in implementing immigration policy and the Irish Prison Service in the implementation of these operations”, a spokesperson added.
In 2024, the Department of Justice took over administrative immigration registration functions from the gardaí.
The Trump administration issued sanctions on Thursday against Lebanese officials aligned with Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terror group that controls Southern Lebanon, marking the first such action since the signing of an agreement between Washington and Tehran.
The move came ahead of another round of direct Israel-Lebanon security talks in Washington, D.C., as Jerusalem and Beirut seek ways to remove Hezbollah forces from areas within striking range of Israel’s northern border.
“Hezbollah must disarm for Lebanon to achieve a secure and prosperous future,” Scott Bessent, U.S. treasury secretary, said. “Treasury will continue to target Hezbollah’s financial networks and hold accountable those who enable the group to undermine the Lebanese state and threaten prospects for lasting peace.”
Those sanctioned include Sleiman Antoine Frangie, leader of the Lebanese Marada Movement. The Treasury Department said Frangie “has used his strategic alliance with Hezbollah to benefit his own political ambitions,” including by accepting financial support from the terror group in exchange for helping it challenge more moderate members of parliament for their seats.
Mahmoud Qamati, deputy head of Hezbollah’s political council, was also designated for coordinating cash smuggling from Iran.

A man who created more than 100 fake social media profiles to blackmail and sexually assault other young Muslim men has been jailed for 16 years.
Waleed Saeed, a British-born Muslim of Somali descent, was sentenced in what one Metropolitan Police officer described as the biggest "sexploitation" case he has dealt with.
Snaresbrook Crown Court, London, heard how the 31-year-old used a network of fake Snapchat, Instagram and Grindr profiles to solicit intimate images of Muslim men and teenagers as young as 15, many of whom privately identified as gay or bisexual.
He would then threaten to "out" them to their friends and family.
On occasions when victims could not pay his ransom, he would attempt to coerce them into meeting in person so he could sexually assault them.
Saeed had been convicted of 17 offences, including rape, blackmail and making indecent images of children.
In March, Saeed pleaded guilty to nine charges relating to four victims, including two counts of threatening to share intimate images, two counts of blackmail and two counts of making indecent images of a child.
A jury then found him guilty of eight other counts of charges including rape, attempted rape and blackmail.
The BBC understands The Met is now looking into around 100 more potential victims.
DC Peter Collington, who led the force's investigation, told the BBC: "I am making a direct appeal to other victim-survivors who may not have had the confidence to come forward.
"We want to treat you with compassion, with sensitivity and with absolute confidentiality. What has been done to you is wrong, and we will do everything in our power to support you."
Saeed's offending, which dates back to 2018, was discovered in August 2024 when a rape in a London park was reported.
The 18-year-old victim told police he had exchanged sexual images with someone he believed to be a transgender woman, but was in fact Saeed
Shortly afterwards, he received threatening messages from another account run by Saeed, revealing his true identity and demanding payment in exchange for not releasing the images.
When the victim could not pay, Saeed coerced him into meeting in a London park late at night on three separate occasions, where he sexually assaulted and raped him, while wearing a face covering to hide his identity.
Forensic evidence recovered from the victim's phone led police to arrest Saeed and seize two mobile phones containing further intimate images of victims, some of whom are believed to be children.
He used usernames such as "Trans Girl Leah", "amzyyyy09", and "ComeDeal" to target victims in London and across the UK.
Police uncovered a series of reports dating back as far as 2018, following what police called a "sinister pattern of offending".
Handing down the sentence, Judge HHJ Greene addressed Saeed directly: "You, yourself, are gay and like some of your victims, deeply troubled by what you perceive as your culture's negative views of homosexuality.
"Your victims were all young men of similar age, teenagers. You took advantage of the fact that cultural issues made them particularly vulnerable to the threat of exposure."
The judge told the court Saeed was "adept" at "catfishing and sexploitation."
"Once your victims had been lured into believe you were someone they might find attractive, they would be tricked into sharing intimate images of themselves, images you would be careful to insist would include their faces, so they could then be threatened by your exposure."
The court heard how one victim - a university student who had shared sexual videos and pictures with Saeed - felt unable to confide in family because of their "strict culture".
A victim impact statement read to the court said: "I don't go home much because I am constantly afraid they'll find out.
"They would be very ashamed of me and not want to talk to me anymore."
The statement also detailed how he had needed to take anti-anxiety medication.
"Whenever I hear the Snapchat notification I feel scared and have to check it straight away, the first thing I think is it could be a picture or video of me he could've posted."
Detectives are now appealing for other victims, or those who may know of other victims, to come forward.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "Please be assured that victims will have their identity protected and privacy completely respected.
"Victims will not be required to share details of their experiences to their family members or friends if they do not wish to.
"Alternatively, for anyone looking for support that is independent from the police, you can contact Galop, the UK's LGBT+ anti-abuse charity."
The Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi and eight members of a production team, including musicians, have been reportedly sentenced to 74 lashes for performing in a concert livestreamed on Ahmadi’s YouTube channel in 2024.
According to court documents, the criminal court of Qom province sentenced the artists to flogging, a two-year ban on leaving the country and a two-year ban on engaging in artistic activities on charges that include offending public decency through the production and publication of “vulgar and immoral content” online.
Although the official judiciary news agency has yet to publish the ruling, rights groups and lawyers who reviewed the documents said the pattern of arrests and legal cases against artists publicly defying the regime reflects a broader effort to deter cultural dissent.
In December 2024, the 29-year-old singer performed the patriotic song Az Khoone Javanane Vatan (From the Blood of the Youth of the Homeland) without a hijab in a livestreamed performance that went viral.
She was briefly detained along with several musicians shortly after its release before being freed. Authorities later filed a formal case over the publication of the video, which has since accumulated millions of views on YouTube.
Bahar Ghandehari, the director of advocacy at the US-based Center for Human Rights in Iran, said “Ahmadi’s punishment of 74 lashes for merely singing and appearing without a hijab is yet another reminder that human rights conditions in Iran have not changed, despite the Iranian authorities’ wartime propaganda campaign aimed at improving their image.”
She added that the contrast between official imagery and the prosecution of artists exposed “the gap between the regime’s propaganda and reality”.
Moein Khazaeli, a human rights lawyer at Dadban, a legal counselling centre for Iranian activists, said the sentence lacked legal basis.
“Singing, performing music and producing or disseminating musical works by women are not criminalised under Iranian criminal law. Consequently, such activities cannot reasonably be construed as the ‘production, distribution or publication of obscene content’,” he said.
“The imposition of a flogging sentence against artists, civil society activists or other citizens is not merely a matter of domestic criminal law. It also raises serious concerns regarding states’ international obligations to prohibit torture and safeguard human dignity.
“For this reason, numerous human rights organisations consider flogging not a legitimate form of punishment, but rather a form of torture and inhuman treatment.”
For Iranian artists, the ruling, though not unexpected, has deepened fears of escalating cultural repression.
The Iranian-British actor Nazanin Boniadi said: “The sentencing of singer Parastoo Ahmadi to flogging for the simple act of singing publicly without a hijab is a stark reminder that, despite talk in Washington of a ‘new regime’ in Iran, the Islamic republic’s machinery of repression remains unchanged.
“Accommodating a regime that flogs women for their voices and kills citizens for demanding their rights only emboldens it to continue down its tyrannical path.”
The Iranian actor Setareh Maleki, who was forced into exile after starring in Mohammad Rasoulof’s Oscar-nominated film The Seed of the Sacred Fig, said the performance had a powerful emotive impact on her.
She told the Guardian: “When I watched the video of Parastoo Ahmadi’s concert, it reignited the spirit of resistance in me. For days, I kept watching the videos over and over again, and I felt immensely proud of Parastoo.
“Knowing all the consequences she would have to face, she still refused to give up her right, as a woman, to live, to sing and to be heard. Iranian women never stop fighting against tyranny, not even for a moment, and that is truly remarkable.”
She added: “For an Iranian artist who refuses to comply with censorship inside Iran, the daily routine is a form of resistance.
“We’ve come a long way but there is still a long road ahead. I’m grateful that every day another beloved artist reminds us of hope again and becomes a guiding light.”
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that Washington could resume military strikes against Iran if a proposed peace agreement breaks down, insisting that the memorandum of understanding being negotiated between the two sides is not yet final.

G7 leaders back Trump’s plan to end Iran war
Trump’s fresh warning comes after Leaders at the Group of Seven summit threw their support behind Trump’s tentative agreement with Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz and further extend a shaky ceasefire, even though he is offered scant specificity about how that would be implemented.
In a declaration issued overnight, the leaders called the deal a “historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapon and tackling the threats related to its regional and ballistic activities”.
The leaders said they were “ready to contribute to its implementation,” although neither the White House nor Iran has released the text of the agreement. According to leaked copies of an interim agreement, Iran will immediately take steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz once the deal is signed and will be allowed to sell its oil without restrictions.
Officials say the leaked text broadly matches the document. The accord, due to be formally signed in a ceremony in Switzerland on Friday, lays out that the US would work to end all American and United Nations sanctions imposed on Tehran if a final agreement addressing Iran’s nuclear program is reached.

As part of its economic policies and reforms, the President Bola Tinubu administration is now focusing strategically on developing the Halal ecosystem to boost the economy, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, has said.
Hadejia exclusively told THISDAY Wednesday at the sidelines of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group Annual Meeting taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, that barely a year ago, the Tinubu administration inaugurated a process of developing and creating a Halal ecosystem for Nigeria to key into the fastest-growing sector of the global economy.
The Halal economy (also referred to as the Islamic economy) is a global economic sector structured around products and services that comply with Islamic law (Sharia).
While traditionally associated with dietary laws, specifically meat prepared according to Islamic laws, the modern Halal economy has expanded far beyond food and now represents a lifestyle-driven market rooted in ethical, health, and safety standards that appeal not only to the world’s Muslim population but also to non-Muslim consumers looking for organic, ethical, or cruelty-free options.
According to the presidential aide, “After, of course, the advent of the private sector doing it alone, the government has to come in because Nigeria, without any effort, is the seventh largest Halal consumer country on earth and the second largest in Africa.
“So, with the government now coming in to develop the ecosystem, helping with certification and infrastructure, we want to tap into the fastest-growing sector of the global economy.”
He noted that it used to be a niche, in which it was perceived as a religious thing, “but now, it has exploded in economic growth, and it’s heading toward seven trillion dollars, and it has nothing to do with religion.
Among the ten largest Halal economies in the world, I believe it’s only one, Turkey, which is number nine, that would be said to have some religious affiliation to the Halal ecosystem.
The rest are all, you know, including Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, the United States, and others.
“It’s simply economy, and we believe that Nigeria needs to move in and tap into that very fast-growing sector because we have the numerical advantage.
“I mean, if you imagine that even our local economy is a market in itself, let alone now shifting towards exporting livestock and derivatives, with the fact that we have the largest livestock population on the African continent.”
Hadejia posited further that: “We now have a dedicated ministry (Ministry of Livestock), and of course, just like with everything else, Nigerian livestock is particularly demanded by the Middle East and Arabian countries because of the unique flavour of our goat meat. So, it is something that they are doing currently informally, and we want to ensure that we capture it and integrate it into a larger economic policy.”
On how the halal ecosystem would impact the common man, he said the focus is on creating micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), adding: We’re talking of MSMEs. We’re not talking about mega industries out of the reach of the common man; it is for MSMEs.
“So, obviously, by the time we establish that economic framework, it will be a part of the economic inclusion initiative of the government. This is an ecosystem from the ground up. We’re not starting in the middle; we’re not starting at the top. We’re moving directly to the production sector.”
He noted that the government has brought reforms to the foreign exchange, oil sector, and infrastructure development, “which, you know, we are very focused and dedicated to taking to the end.
“By the time you consider them, even the road infrastructure that is ongoing across the country, in the next two, three years, that’s going to have a significant impact on the economy.
“We also look at the fact that Nigeria’s inflation is essentially driven by food inflation. Food inflation is driven by logistics. If you resolve those issues, you know, the differential between foodstuff in Kano and Lagos would probably be 15 to 20 percent instead of 3,000 percent that we have now because of logistics issues.”
Hadejia lauded IsDB’s contributions to the Nigerian economy by simplifying lending.
According to him, “Talking about the Islamic Development Bank impact on our economy, if you look at the basket of the lenders we have in Nigeria, when you talk to anybody in the Ministry of Finance, you would know that ISDB financing is probably the cheapest, the least technical, and the most uncomplicated.
“It’s very straightforward looking at it from the perspective of risk sharing because of the non-interest financing. So, in fact, the people are actually looking more to ISDB for refinancing now, to take them out of the IMF, World Bank, and others.
“Because of the lower cost and the shared risk, nobody is dumping the risk 100 percent on the lender. So, I commend the IsDB impact immensely, and I guess that that is what is also giving rise to non-interest banking in Nigeria, commanding almost 18 percent of the total banking sector.”

A teacher has been found guilty of sexually abusing and murdering the 13-month-old baby boy he adopted with his partner.
Preston Davey died in July 2023 at the hands of Jamie Varley, 37, who took a year off work to adopt him.
Varley, from Blackpool, told police Preston had accidentally drowned in a bath, but a post-mortem examination discovered the child had suffered 40 injuries.
His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, has been found guilty of sexual assault, child cruelty and allowing the death of a child. The pair will be sentenced on Thursday.
Preston was adopted by Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley, a financial sales manager, in April 2023 and in the next four months he suffered sexual abuse and ill-treatment, the trial at Preston Crown Court heard.
Preston was born in June 2022 and taken into care by Oldham Council.
Preston's mother, Sarah Davey, now 42, had been jailed at the age of 14 for the murder of a frail pensioner in 1998 and had been in and out of prison since then.
In court, his mother and grandmother sobbed throughout as the 29 guilty verdicts were returned.
Preston was placed with foster parents at five days old, remaining with them for the first 10 months of his life.
Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley were approved for adoption and Preston began living at their home in Blackpool in April 2023, when he was nine months old.
But in the just under four months he was in their care, he was routinely ill-treated, sexually abused and physically assaulted, suffering 40 traumatic injuries.
He also had indecent images and videos taken of him.
The trial heard Preston had been taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital three times in the months before his death with suspicious bruises noticed by medical staff, but these were explained away.
Preston had also been seen by several social workers.
Varley rushed Preston to hospital for a final time on 27 July, unresponsive. He claimed to have left the child in the bath for a couple of minutes and returned to find him submerged.
But the trial heard Preston's hair was dry, he had a nappy on and he did not appear to have swallowed any water.
A Home Office post-mortem examination ruled out drowning as the cause of death, with the cause found to be acute upper airways obstruction by an object or objects inserted into his mouth.
'Pure evil'
Varley stood in the dock and put his hands to his face as the guilty verdicts were read out, before collapsing to his knees, retching and vomiting.
McGowan-Fazakerley did not react but his father, who was watching from the gallery, shook his head.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows said the two men were "pure evil".
"Almost from day one, they set about abusing Preston and making his short life a harrowing tale of misery and pain," he said.
"For the first nine months of his life Preston was a happy and healthy child but by the end he was a broken shell.
"This was due to the sordid and wicked acts of Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley."
Karen Tonge for the Crown Prosecution Service said it was one of the "most shocking and horrific cases I have dealt with in my career".
Following an eight-week trial a jury spent about 14 hours considering the verdicts before returning to court.
Varley was found guilty of murder, two counts of assault by penetration, five counts of cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, sexual assault of a child, 13 counts of taking indecent photos or videos of a child, one of distributing an indecent photo of a child, to his co-accused, and one of making an indecent photo.
McGowan-Fazakerley was found guilty of allowing the death of a child, two counts of child cruelty and one count of the sexual assault of a child.
'Heart-wrenching'
A spokesperson for Oldham Council said: "The death of any child is a tragedy, but this is a particularly heart-wrenching and disturbing case.
"We are thankful that the perpetrators of the sickening murder and abuse of an innocent child have today been convicted for their crimes."
They said an independent Child Safeguarding Practice Review was already under way, which would examine the handling of Preston's safeguarding.
"Our thoughts remain with Preston's family, loved ones, and the many people affected by this case."
Regional adoption agency, Adoption Now, said it was a "deeply upsetting case, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by these truly awful crimes".
It said it followed "a strict and rigorous process... in the assessment and approval of adopters".
"An independent Child Safeguarding Practice Review is being completed."
Both defendants will be sentenced on Thursday by Mr Justice Turner.
He thanked jurors and told them, "bearing in mind what we have called upon you to do", they would be exempt from jury service for life.
