7 year old Legend Jenkins was with his 10-year-old brother in the American city of Gastonia in the State of North Carolina last Tuesday when he ran into traffic and was hit by a jeep driven by a 76-year-old woman, according to the Gastonia Police Department.

His mom, Jessica Ivey, told WSCOC it was the first time she had allowed her sons to walk to the nearby grocery store.

Ivey and the boys’ father, Samuele Jenkins, were arrested Thursday and each charged with involuntary manslaughter and child neglect, both felonies.

They were denied permission to attend their son’s funeral, instead getting slapped with a $1.5 million bond, the highest possible.

“While the Gastonia Police Department offers its deepest sympathies to the family for the heartbreaking loss of their child, the investigation revealed that the children involved were unsupervised at the time the boy stepped into traffic,” police said in a statement.


“In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children.”

The driver will not face any charges as police found no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on her part.

A witness to the deadly crash, Summer Williams, said the boy was hit after darting out into the street as his brother tried to hold him back. She immediately stopped her car and held the dying boy in her arms.

“Even at night, I still see his face,” the witness recalled.

She said she tried to comfort the 7-year-old as they waited for responders to arrive.

“Just letting him know that somebody was there and he wasn’t alone. ‘Stay with us, sweetheart. You’re going to be all right. Stay with us,’” Williams said.

Legend died from his injuries at the hospital hours later.

In a post shared on Instagram, the Nigerian footballer announced that he will be burying both his parents. His father passed in November 2024, and two months later, he lost his mother.

You cannot have sex with an underage girl whom you have not married. That is considered RAPE.

Racquel “Kelly” Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis, and their friend Steveno van Rhyn were all handed life sentences more than a year after the mysterious disappearance of Joshlin Smith from outside her home near Cape Town.

When Joshlin first disappeared, her mother was a figure of sympathy, and pictures of the girl’s striking green eyes, pigtails and broad smile were shared across the country.

Smith showed no emotion as her sentence was handed down, bringing an end to an eight-week trial that had to be moved to a local stadium so horrified members of the community could bear witness.

She admitted to selling her daughter to a traditional healer, or sangoma, for 20,000 rand ($1,100), and said the girl was desired for her “eyes and skin,” a witness told the court.

Joshlin’s body has still not been found despite an extensive nationwide search since she went missing in February 2024.


The trio are believed to have sold the little girl to the healer to fund their drug addictions, the court heard.

Mom-of-three Smith was described as manipulative and had shown “no indication of remorse” or concern over her daughter’s disappearance, Judge Nathan Erasmus said in court.

All three were also sentenced to a concurrent 10 years imprisonment for kidnapping.

“I am also ordering the entry of your names to the child protection register. There is nothing that I can find that is redeeming and deserving of a lesser sentence than the harshest I can impose,” Judge Erasmus told the defendants.

There were cheers in the courtroom as the verdict was read out.

Joshlin’s distraught grandmother, Amanda Smith Daniels, was present in court for the verdict, wearing a white shirt emblazoned with images of her granddaughter.

During the initial search for the girl, one government minister offered a one-million-rand reward ($54,000) for Joshlin’s safe return.

The girl was desired for her “eyes and skin,” a witness told the court.

But sympathy for Smith evaporated when prosecutors first alleged that she had sold her daughter to a healer.

Since the start of the trial in March, witnesses, including the girl’s former teacher and a pastor, said that Smith had told them of the planned sale of her child as far back as 2023.

The ongoing search for Joshlin has now been extended beyond South Africa’s borders, police said on Thursday.

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world, with soaring rates of child kidnapping.

In the last year, the Rainbow Nation saw more than 17,000 kidnappings, an 11% increase on the previous year, according to police statistics.

Zacch Adedeji, the executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), says studies have shown that only 19 percent of Nigerians pay tax.

Adedeji spoke on Tuesday at the launch of a book, titled ‘Taxation: Essential Knowledge for Nigerian Children by the FIRS’.

The FIRS chairman was represented by Aisha Mahmoud, his special adviser on research and statistics.

He said the book, written by Aderonke Atoyebi and Ejura Haruna, was fully supported by the FIRS to help educate the younger generation on the importance of tax payment.

“First of all, I want to say that we have run a couple of studies and we have found out that tax compliance is positively correlated with tax education,” he said.

“When children are educated, they grow up to become responsible people, pay their taxes and do what is right. We have carried out studies and we have found out that only 19 percent of Nigerians pay taxes.

“Other studies have shown that only 10 percent of people pay taxes. Because we rely so much on research and investigations, some have shown that only 10–15 percent of citizens pay taxes.

“We think that this is decimally low compared to other countries, even in Africa. We have come up with the initiative to ensure that we partner with other government institutions, individuals, like this one, to propagate, encourage, educate, and create awareness for our younger ones.

“Why? Because it is easier to make younger children to become tax compliant when they grow up than reform tax-dodging adults.

“That is why we support anywhere that there are initiatives to publish books like we have done today.”

Adedeji said building a generation of tax-compliant citizens would lead to greater demand for accountability and ensure public funds are used transparently and responsibly.

“When they are taught and they are subjects on taxation from the primary level, especially, and the secondary school level, when they reach the university, they have already known about that civil duty,” the FIRS boss said.

“It is not only the students of accounting that should know about taxation, a lot of people are not aware of tax issues, and that is why they dodge and that is why they evade paying taxes.”

The taxman said including tax education in primary and secondary school curricula would shape children’s mindset towards responsible citizenship and tax compliance.

60,000 COPIES TO BE DISTRIBUTED NATIONWIDE’

Atoyebi, the book’s co-author and technical assistant on broadcast media to the chairman, said 60,000 copies, produced free of charge, will be distributed across the six geopolitical zones with support from the FIRS and Sprezzatura Publishing.

She said the book was designed to bridge the gap between citizens and tax authorities by helping children understand the purpose and benefits of taxation.

“They always say that nobody wants to pay tax. This is why we’re catching them young, to let them know that some of the social amenities they have access to, some of the infrastructural facilities we have in the nation today are being funded via revenue generated,” Atoyebi said.

“We are teaching them about taking civic responsibility. The book addresses civic responsibility, governance, how to be a serious adult. The importance of that position. What are we using taxes for? Taxes do not go to personal accounts. It goes to government accounts. In return, the government uses it to fund infrastructure, social amenities, to give us a good life.”

On education tax, she said some of the revenue collected goes to education, “especially TETFund”.

She added that the book used comic illustrations and simple language to make tax education easy and enjoyable for children by breaking down technical terms into basic English.

3 Killer asteroids could strike Earth within weeks — generating a million times more energy than Hiroshima atomic bomb

Good things don’t come in threes.

Venus is concealing at least three city-killer asteroids that could strike Earth in weeks without warning, potentially wreaking havoc upon our planet before we can react.

“Twenty co-orbital asteroids [space rocks in the orbit of two celestial bodies] of Venus are currently known,” the authors warned in the arockcalyptic study, which was published in the journal “Astronomy & Astrophysics.”

The international research team, led by Valerio Carruba of São Paulo University in Brazil, wrote that at least three of the asteroids — 2020 SB, 524522 and 2020 CL1 — that circle the sun in tandem with our twin planet have unstable orbits that take them dangerously close to Earth, the Daily Mail reported.

If this shaky trajectory is shifted only slightly by a small gravitational change or other force, the asteroids could be set on a collision course with our planet, per the study.

“Co-orbital status protects these asteroids from close approaches to Venus, but it does not protect them from encountering Earth,” the researchers warned, according to the Daily Galaxy.

Carruba & Co. came to this conclusion by using imitation space rocks to simulate a range of possible outcomes over 36,000 years, finding that there is a sizable population of low-eccentricity asteroids — those previously thought to be harmless — that could be propelled toward Earth via gravitational shifts and other factors.

To make matters worse, the aforementioned cosmic rocks’ orbits make them almost invisible to Earthly detection devices.

While scientists at NASA and other space agencies routinely track potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids, the telescopes can’t spot rocks in a suborbital path with Venus due to the sun’s glare, which shields them like a cosmic cloaking device, WION reported.

Due to this interstellar blind spot, the Rubin Observatory in Chile would have only two to four weeks to spot deadly asteroids, leaving us little time if they were on a collision course.

For reference, a mission to engineer something that could deflect a killer space rock generally takes years to formulate.

“Low-e [low eccentricity] Venus co-orbitals pose a unique challenge, because of the difficulties in detecting and following these objects from Earth,” the authors wrote in their conclusion.

It would be bad news if one of these intergalactic gravelstones hit home.

Asteroids 2020 SB, 524522 and 2020 CL1 measure between 330 and 1,300 feet in diameter, making each one capable of destroying entire cities and causing massive fires and tsunamis, the Daily Mail reported.

An impact would leave a crater over two miles wide and generate 1 million times more energy than the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945.

Unfortunately, due to the constraints of terrestrial monitoring equipment, we may have to look to the stars for a solution.

“We believe that only a dedicated observational campaign from a space-based mission near Venus could potentially map and discover all the still ‘invisible’ PHA [potentially hazardous asteroids] among Venus’ co-orbital asteroids,” the authors wrote.

However, the powers that be better hurry, as researchers predict that co-orbital asteroids’ orbits could become unpredictable in just more than 150 years — a blip in the interstellar timescale.
