Africa’s richest man and President, Dangote Industries, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, yesterday, dismissed fears about the impact of the fall in crude oil prices on the Nigerian economy, saying the decline would not translate to doom for the economy. *Alhaji Aliko Dangote Speaking in Lagos at The Economist Summit on Nigeria, Dangote said despite the fall in oil price, a lot of sectors were doing well in Nigeria, adding that the problem was that people were under estimating the resilience of the Nigerian economy.

Entitled: ‘Nigeria: The Dawn of a New Era?’ the summit was organised by The Economist Events, a subsidiary of The Economist International magazine. Those in attendance were economic experts and top government officials, including Managing Director/Chief Executive, Access Bank Plc, Mr. Herbert Wigwe; Managing Director/Chief Executive, Oando Plc, Mr. Adewale Tinubu; Managing Director/Chief Executive, Financial Derivatives Company, Mr. Bismarck Rewane; Managing Director/Chief Executive, Vero Capital Management Company, Danladi Verheijen and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Okechukwu Enelamah. According to him, while the fall in oil prices portends dangers to some businesses, it, however, presents a good opportunity to diversify the Nigerian economy. He said “If we don’t diversify the economy now, then we would never do it.”

He said Nigerian companies should learn to export, advising that they should leverage on the 320 million population of the West African sub region to grow their businesses through export. People are under estimating the economy He said: “I think people are under estimating the economy of Nigeria. They just go and look at foreign exchange, because price of oil has gone down, it means that everything has gone out of the window. That is not correct, in some areas, yes, depending on your business.” Citing the example of growth recorded by Dangote in cement and sugar sales, he said: “If you look at it, right from October to November, our sales of cement have actually been going down, even though at a cost because we took the price down by 35 per cent, but this has given us over 50 per cent market growth up to January, February.

“January, you know is a very slow month, but in February, we had 47 per cent growth in terms of volume. And our own estimate is that in the next three months we would have over 60 per cent growth. We could not go beyond this 50 per cent because we have been having serious issues in terms of gas. “On our sugar too, we have seen growth of about 80 per cent.

When you take a company like Coca-Cola, it has actually exhausted its capacity. They delisted about three years ago, and they doubled their capacity within these three years, and now their major problem is that they cannot meet up with their capacity, and now they have a plan to double their capacity in the next two and half years. “So it is not that there is dullness all over the economy, no. In some areas things are even moving up.

But it does not mean that people should sit back and say there is crisis. Sometimes, crisis is also an opportunity, so you use it very well so that the crisis should not happen to you. “You just had to have faith, and keep pushing to make sure you are where you are and that is what we are doing. That is why we are not stopping in all our projects, we know the market, and we know the dynamics of the markets.” Time to diversify economy “I think the one quick policy, which is what we have been talking about is diversification of the economy. This is the right moment. I know in Nigeria, once the oil price goes up to $80, nobody will diversify, we would go back to our misbehaviour. “Government should be very specific and come out with clear policy that we would support. And the implementation has to be monitored. If we don’t do it now, we would never do it.

Nigerian firms should learn to export “Nigerian goods can be very competitive. We don’t have to export goods from here to East Africa. We have 15 countries in the ECOWAS region, which are duty free. At the moment, most of the companies are not geared up for export which I think is a big mistake because when you have more volume, you can make more money and become more competitive.

“The scenario of export is that if I meet up with my domestic market, I can actually take the excess and dump it in another country. It will give me much more profit. The issue is about capacity. If you have it fine. “But for countries in Nigeria, they don’t have to export to East Africa. First of all, there is population of about 320 million people to feed.

So the market is big, great and profitable. “Also, from Lagos to Accra is 450 kilometres, but to Abuja is about 650 kilometres. That means your real market is this West African market. So your real market is Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana and even up to Ivory Coast. “So we have a big market and the export will not be difficult. I think what we need now, especially with this foreign exchange freeze, is that our people should learn to export. “And government too should find out how to correct this export credit scheme if it is going to continue. Because it is good to export and also to have support for export but what the government should say is ‘if I give you export credit support, you don’t go and use it to pay duties and co. If you are in business, you use the export credit against your taxes.’ On forex subsidy “There is nothing like subsidy. It is about giving incentives to people to set up industries. And that is happening almost everywhere and Nigeria is not even the highest. “If somebody has a business, he is more interested in running his business than in round tripping. Those people doing round tripping, no matter what you do, they would still do round tripping, they would not stop doing round tripping.

“Give them what you want to give them, their own business is how to make money from the differential in foreign exchange rate. But there are ways government can block them, by making sure that the goods to be imported are here. They would not be able to take dollars without you bringing in the goods.”

President Buhari during his recent interview with Al Jazeerah, said Nigeria has joined the Islamic Coalition against terrorism being championed by Saudi Arabia.

“We are part of it because we’ve got terrorists in Nigeria that everybody knows which claim that they are Islamic. So, if there’s an Islamic coalition to fight terrorism, Nigeria will be part of it because we are casualties of Islamic terrorism,” he said

When asked whether Nigeria joined the coalition during his meeting with King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia recently, Buhari said “yes.”
Buhari queried the position of some Christians in Nigeria who have opposed Nigeria joining the coalition. He wondered why such Christians had not gone to fight Boko Haram in the North or militants in the South.

“Why can’t those Christians that complained go and fight terrorism in Nigeria or fight the militancy in the South. It’s Nigeria that matters, not the opinion of some religious bigots,” he said
On whether he was trying to change the religious identity of the country, Buhari noted: “How can I change the religious identity of Nigeria? No religion advocates hurting the innocent and just because the Muslims are the ones that claim to be Boko Haram and they are killing innocent people whether in the church, in the bus or in the market place, then I will just sit and look at them because I too am a Muslim? Islam is against injustice in any form.”he said

Brazil's former richest man throws £130k worth of gold coins into the sea in a bid to appease the 'Queen of the sea' and regain lost glory

Eike Batista was once Brazil's richest man with a net worth of about £25billion and placed 7th on Forbes' list of billionaires, but misfortune hit in 2013. His oil and commodities companies collapsed. In a bid to rebuild his billion-dollar empire, he has resorted to what some may see as superstition.

The flamboyant businessman tossed over 700 thousand Brazilian reais (£130,000) in gold coins onto the waves off the coast of Rio de Janeiro's Ipanema beach last month after a Brazilian African religious leader advised he needed to appease a water-bound deity Yamanja, known as the queen of the seas, for his past 'ungrateful' actions.

'He came to me for help and I told him that everything he had taken from the sea has to be returned in some way and this could be done by a ritualistic gesture showing gratitude,' said Ubirajara Pinheiro, a medium and a priest of the Umbanda religion – a syncretic polytheistic belief that draws on African spiritual traditions mixed with elements of Roman Catholicism.

'Most of (Eike's) recent business explorations were connected to the ocean and you cannot remove ore from the earth without thanking and giving back,' warned Pinheiro, who has been a practicing mystic for over 30 years.
'It's only after we've been punished by God do we then see the wrong we have done,' he added.
In 2013, Batista suffered one of the largest personal and financial collapses in corporate history losing 99 percent of his £25billion fortune when his six company commodities empire, which included offshore gas and oil exploration, and gold and iron ore mining, went bust defaulting on the largest corporate debt in the history of a Latin American company.

Batista however is undeterred in his quest to regain his former glory, he admits he is highly superstitious and has employed the services of psychics in the past to guide his business, what's more, he believes he will be able to roll back the tide of misfortune.

Chartering a yacht, he took to sea to perform a ceremony that involved placing the gold coins in a small vessel with flowers, perfume, champagne and a statue of Yemanja. The little boat was then pushed out to sea in the presence of Pinheiro who led prayers, meditation and chanting.

Asked if this is an expensive way to make amends, Pinheiro who is based in Rio said : 'It is not about the quantity it is a matter of faith. Many years ago when (Eike) visited my house I warned him what would happen.'

It has been a spectacular fall from giddy heights for the father-of-two who bought his first goldmine aged just 24, Last year, federal police went to his house, seizing a Lamborghini and six other cars, additional assets and 90,000 reals (£22,000) in cash from the homes of Brazil's once-richest man.

CrimeNJC Queries Umezulike On N10m Donation by blazincruz(op): 1:46am On Mar 07, 2016
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA—The National Judicial Council, NJC, has queried the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. A. Umezulike over an allegation that he accepted N10 million donation from a litigant before his court.

The allegation was contained in a petition that was forwarded to the NJC by an Enugu-based legal practitioner, Mr. Peter N. Eze. The CJ was alleged to have invited a litigant who was a plaintiff before him to the launching of a book he wrote, and accepted a donation of N10 million from the litigant. Besides, Eze, in his petition with Ref No. MSC/23/2016, dated February 19, 2016, alleged that the CJ “altered a court order, for the purposes of assisting a judgment creditor to gain possession of a parcel of land in dispute.”

The petitioner, who cited instances of misconduct against the CJ, told the NJC that the Judge struck out a plaintiff’s application, and still awarded punitive costs against the defendant. Eze said he had earlier forwarded two petitions dated October 27, 2014, with reference No. MISC/45/2015, and another one on December 9, 2014, to the NJC. He told the legal body that the CJ issued a warrant of arrest against him, an action he said was connected to the fact that he criticised the N10m donation.

“My Lord I believe that this order for my arrest was made in bad faith and was a gross abuse of judicial power and my fundamental rights. It was meant to intimidate me and cower me for complaining about the earlier misconduct of Justice Umezulike.

“My Lord, I have suffered grave persecution in the hands of Hon. Justice I. A. Umezulike. I brought the matter to the attention of the NJC in 2014 and sadly I was told that the NJC was satisfied with the explanation Hon. Justice Umezulike had given to my complaints. “Unfortunately I was never shown a copy of the reply Justice Umezulike sent to the allegations I made. “In the meantime, I have been harassed by the police, sent on exile and my practice has virtually ground to a halt.

All because I pointed out to Justice Umezulike that it was wrong for a judge to invite a litigant who is a plaintiff in his court, to a launching of a book written by him, and accept a donation of N10,000,000 from the litigant. “It is my fervent prayer that this time, my complaints are seen to be grave enough to warrant a panel of enquiry being set up to investigate Hon.

Justice Umezulike”, the petitioner added. Meanwhile, the NJC, through a query that was signed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, gave Justice Umezulike 14 days to respond to the allegations.

The query with Ref No. NJC/S.14/HC.EN/1/IV/327, read: “I forward herewith a petition Ref No. Msc/23/2016 dated February 19, 2016, against you by one Mr. Peter N. Eze on the above subject matter. “The petition speaks for itself. I shall be glad to have your comments within two weeks from the date of your receipt of this letter, please.”

UGHELLI — REMINISCENT of the Biblical Cain and Abel story, a man identified as Opipi Ajomo killed his younger brother, Eravwokpo Ajomo, over sharing of their father’s plot of land at Agadama community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

His family members promptly killed Opipi in anger. It was gathered that trouble started when the younger Ajomo engaged his elder brother in an argument demanding that their father’s land, which the latter was already farming on, be shared between them so he can farm on his part. A source said the elder brother, angered by the request of his sibling, dashed into his house, came out with a knife and stabbed the victim in the neck.

The younger Ajomo bled and died. The source said on realising his actions, the elder brother tried to escape but was apprehended by some family members, who equally stabbed him to death. The brothers were buried on same day. Attempts to speak with the state Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, was fruitless at press time.

Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chris Bode

The story of 37 – year – old Funmilola (Lola) Oniyelu, who alleged she was mismanaged by doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, made headlines, last week. While Lola claimed she was down with end stage renal disorder following a surgery at the hospital, LUTH management says her claim is false.

Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chris Bode Sunday Vanguard spoke to the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chris Bode, who revealed that the patient’s travails began on July 23, 2008 when she was rushed to the emergency unit of the hospital. Bode said Lola was eight months pregnant when she was brought to LUTH following her referral from a private hospital.

“Hospital records showed severe hypertension and 2+proteinuria. The referral showed that she was treated for severe pre- eclampsia but she discharged herself against medical advice from the private hospital three days after while her blood pressure was still elevated in pregnancy”, he stated. He explained that, on admission in LUTH, doctors discovered that Lola’s blood pressure was highly elevated with protein in her urine.

The doctors, according to him, were able to perform an emergency Caesarian Section “under professionally standard conditions within six hours of presentation despite the fact that she was classified a high – risk for surgery but saving the baby was also essential to saving her life”. According to the CMD, after the successful surgery and discharge, “although Lola’s severe eclampsia continued post – operatively after her discharge five days later, she was not seen in the hospital’s follow up clinics until seven years later”. Bode, who expressed shock at the stories making the rounds about the patient’s predicament, said it is sad the way patients criticise medical professionals after gallant efforts they put in to save their patients lives.

“We are not against patients raising funds for renal transplant but we take objection to patients ruining the hospital in the name of whipping-up sentiments to raise money,”he stated. “After Lola was operated on and taken care of in 2008; she disappeared and was not seen again until seven years later, precisely on June 22, 2015, with another complication of pregnancy”, the CMD said. “She presented after seven years again from an hospital at Isolo with severe preeclampsia with drainage of liquor at 36 weeks, blood pressure of 170/120mmHg and a doubtful fetal heart beat.” He dismissed Lola’s claim that it was the surgery LUTH carried out that damaged her kidneys. “After her surgery, she was co- managed with the consultant nephrologist on account of persistently elevated blood pressure and deranged renal function tests.

Despite closed monitoring she had episode of post – partum eclampsia on the fifth post-operative day which was aborted by the use of parenteral magnesium sulphate”, Bode explained. Stating that the tertiary hospital only saved her life by carrying out the surgery immediately, he explained that anybody with preeclampsia is high risk for kidney disease and other organ failures. “Pre- eclampsia is a complication that sometimes affects pregnant women, posing grave risk to mother and baby in the womb. Its causes remain unknown; this terrible disease of pregnancy is a cause of maternal and neonatal deaths and this is why the urine of pregnant women is routinely tested for protein at all ante- natal clinics,”Bode said.

“ It is sad but not strange therefore that Lola possibly developed chronic renal failure subsequent to the complication of her last pregnancy.

She arrived on shock from the ruptured uterus and this was what triggered the renal failure during her second emergency.” The CMD said the patient’s current situation was not related to anything the doctors who saved her life twice did or did not do. He stated that LUTH was proud to have saved Lola’s life each time she arrived at the hospital as an emergency in grave conditions with complications of pregnancies that had been managed elsewhere.

“She is still attending our clinics and we will not victimise her but continue to treat her with the professional courtesy and kindness she deserves. She may require money for further treatment but we implore her to desist from saying hurtful things that may tarnish the image of the hospital and the professionals that treated her,” he added.

A top pastor in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, is currently running from pillar to post to clear his name as well as keep his church members after his church's Praise and Worship leader went on the social media to release very graphic photos of the two of them having 3ex in different hotels, and even in his matrimonial home.

It was gathered that the girl got angry when the randy pastor who is said to have slept almost all the ladies in his church, dumped her after she got pregnant and refused to go for yet another abortion.

While the war between the secret lovers was raging, the pastor allegedly removed the girl as the Praise and Worship leader, labeling her as being possessed with an evil spirit.

The repercussion is what he never expected as the girl carried her threat of destroying not only him, but his church and marriage.

CrimeEFCC To Arraign Tarfa & Nwobike For Bribery by blazincruz(op): 10:22pm On Mar 05, 2016
Abuja -The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign two Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), Rickey Tarfa and Dr Joseph Nwobike, at the Lagos State High Court for alleged bribery.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Commission`s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Wilson Uwujaren. According to the statement, the two SAN are both accused of offering gratification running into millions of naira to judges to influence decisions in their favour.

It said that Tarfa was facing a 27-count charge of alleged wilful obstruction of authorised officers of EFCC and refusing to declare asset. The statement said that Tafa also gave false information to an EFCC officer and offered gratification to a public official.

One of the count-charges against Tarfa, the statement said, was that he gave the sum of N 1.5 million to Justice Nganjiwa Hyeladzira Ajiya of the Federal High Court.

The statement added that Dr Joseph Nwobike (SAN) also intentionally gave the sum of N750, 000 to Justice Mohammed Yunusa of the Federal High Court. This, it said, he did in order that the said Judge acts in the exercise of his official duties in his favour.

Osogbo –A leader of pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Chief Olu Falae, yesterday escaped death by the whiskers when a mobile policeman along Akure-Ilesha Express way fired a gunshot at his car. Olu Falae Falae, according to reports was on his way to Ile-Ife to join other members of the pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere on a courtesy visit to Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi when the incident happened.

A visibly disturbed former Secretary to the Federal Government, SFG, who narrated his ordeal to newsmen in Ile-Ife before the Afenifere’s meeting with Oba Ogunwusi said he narrowly escaped death in the hands of the policemen. He explained that his car was shot at at Ile-Oluji junction. Falae was recently kidnapped in his Akure home by Fulani herdsmen before he was rescued by the security agents. He expressed shock over the shooting at his car by the policemen, asking; “When was I kidnapped that they want to kill me now?’’ He added: “I was coming from Akure approaching Ilesa and I saw some vehicles ahead of me.

There was a bullion van in front. The vehicles ahead of us were overtaking the bullion van so we too followed. “I nearly passed them when I heard a shot and subsequent bang on my car. We stopped and we saw that they actually fired at the car. “They didn’t stop. We stopped at Erin-Ijesa and complained to the police at the check-point that we were fired at by some policemen escorting a bullion van at Ile-Oluji junction. Chief Falae who expressed fear over continuous attack on him said; “I don’t know why I was kidnapped recently, why I was arrested in 1997 and locked up for two years and now shot.” When contacted, the Osun state command of the Police image maker, Mrs Folashade Odoro said the command was yet to receive official report on the issue. The Personal Assistant to Chief Falae, Captain Moshood Raji confirmed the incident saying;

“Yes it is true, they shot at the car as we drove pass them between Ikeji Arakeji and Ipetu in Osun State as others did . ‘’There were three vehicles including an Hilux van which was carrying the policemen, the bullion van and the pilot vehicle. “Chief Falae’s Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV, drove pass the pilot car, so one of the policemen fired a shot at our car .

Nobody was injured. Chief Falae and everybody is fine. “ He added that Chief Falae reported the matter to police authority in Akure. Also reacting, Afenifere’s spokesman, Mr Yinka Odumakin, described the situation as: “Tragic and symptomatic of the lawlessness and depravity in our society”. “Good that Papa’s security details have the clues that will be useful in tracking the fellows in the bullion van.

They must be made accountable.” Ooni charges Afenifere to work for Yoruba unity During the meeting, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, charged the leadership of the pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere to give priority to the progress of Yoruba land irrespective of their individual political differences. Speaking in Ile-Ife, yesterday, Oba Ogunwusi who expressed dissatisfaction over disunity among Yoruba, urged the group to put the interest of Yoruba first in all their activities.

His words, “Despite how powerful and influential we are in Yoruba land, we have allowed politicians to cause disunity among us. In his address, the leader of Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, assured the monarch of the group’s readiness to support any course that can promote unity in Yoruba land.

Fasoranti whose speech was titled “A Gift to the Yoruba Race”, described the recent visit by Oba Ogunwusi to prominent monarchs across Yorubaland as a challenge to the group. He said; “In the last few weeks, you have stepped out of your throne to pay epoch making visits to your brother Obas and in the process put an end to historical animosities, age-long rivalries, petty disputes and perennial conflicts. “Kabiesi, we want to prepare you for some of the challenges you may confront in the good task you have set for yourself as the enemies of our nation who have been happy in our disunity would not fold their hands and see us come together. They will want to put all manners of strictures on our way and spanners in the work.’’

Monarch, Ashafa make case for Yoruba language Meantime, the Ooni Ogunwusi and Senator Olugbenga Ashafa representing Lagos East have called on the Federal Government to revisit the country’s education policy to prevent extinction of indigenous languages in Nigeria. Specifically, Ooni said indigenous language is the beauty of culture and moral values and promised to convene a stakeholders conference on the status of Yoruba language in Nigeria. Ogunwusi, and Ashafa made case for the promotion of Yoruba language during the International Mother Tongue Day organised at Ife city, Hall Ile- Ife Osun State.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Jabi, Abuja, has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to immediately grant bail to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s ex-aide-de-camp, Col. Ojogbane Adegbe, in liberal terms.

Justice Yusuf Halilu, ruling on a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Adegbe on Tuesday, however, refused the plaintiff’s prayer for N100m compensation for unlawful detention by the EFCC and his request that the anti-graft agency should tender a written apology to him.

Meanwhile, before the judge started delivering his ruling on Tuesday, Adegbe’s lawyer, Mr. Ogwu Onoja (SAN), informed the court that the EFCC, after the hearing of the suit on February 25, transferred Adegbe from its custody to the Army.

Ogwu also said after the hearing, the EFCC, which claimed it was only holding Adegbe on the instructions of the Army, decided to grant bail to his client on stringent conditions that he could not fulfil.

But lawyer for the EFCC, Benda Musu, when asked to respond to the plaintiff’s lawyer’s claim, said the SAN had more knowledge of the said transfer.

However, the judge declared Adegbe’s detention by the EFCC since February 11 without filing charges against him as unconstitutional and illegal.

The judge also reprimanded the anti-graft agency for “reducing itself to a police station or a detention centre for the Nigerian Army”.

He observed that the EFCC took contradictory positions by claiming that it was investigating alleged arms procurement fraud for which Adegbe was arrested and in another breath claimed to be holding the plaintiff on the instructions of the Army.

“While the respondent (EFCC) is dancing Makossa on one side, it is singing another song on the other side,” the judge noted.

The judge however said he was unable to direct the EFCC to pay damages to the applicant or tender an apology to him since he was in the Army and the EFCC is also a government agency.

“On the whole, the respondent is ordered to grant bail to the applicant in liberal terms,” the judge ruled.

Adegbe stated in his suit that he had been detained by the EFCC since February 11 without being charged with any offence.

The suit with number, CV/995/16, was filed on February 17, 2016.

The plaintiff contended in his suit that by his continued detention the EFCC had violated his right to personal liberty and freedom of movement guaranteed under sections 35 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution.

HealthEbonyi Confirms Second Lassa Fever Death by blazincruz(op): 6:49pm On Feb 29, 2016
The Ebonyi government has announced the second death from Lassa fever in the state. The Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Daniel Umezurike, told newsmen in Abakaliki on Monday that the disease claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy.

He said that the deceased died at the weekend after being discharged from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. “The incident is unfortunate.

The deceased was a pupil of one of the primary schools in Igbeagu, Izzi Local Government Area. “The bereaved parents are based in Abuja but the report we have did not indicate that he travelled to meet his parents recently,” he said.

The commissioner noted that the deceased was not taken to the hospital immediately he fell sick, which made his condition critical. “He, however, responded to treatment in the hospital which made the authorities to discharge him, but he unfortunately died the day he was discharged.

“The hospital certified him fit after treatment but before he was discharged, we had already taken his test sample to the relevant quarters where the result read positive,” he said.

He noted that the ministry had embarked on surveillance and contact-tracing of close associates to curtail its spread. “We have also intensified our enlightenment campaign among the citizens on ways to prevent the disease and immediate report of suspected cases to relevant authorities,” he said.

The first casualty of the disease in the state was a student of the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, who died in January.

SportsWe’re Ready To Face Eagles – Pharaohs by blazincruz(op): 11:21am On Feb 29, 2016
After concluding their preparation for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2017 qualifying clash with Nigeria, Egypt’s Argentinean manager Hector Cuper announced that he finally reached the final line-up for the crucial game.

“I am satisfied with the Burkina Faso game and I will work to avoid the mistakes made in the friendly when we face Nigeria,” Cuper said.

“We almost reached the final lineup with the start of the Nigeria game, The Nigeria game is a test to determine our real abilities, and we will do our best during this game.

“I understand the criticism after facing minor teams since we didn’t reach the high performance we all look for but we will when we play against Nigeria. I know the teams we played are more minor than our team but they are the available teams during this time,” Egypt’s coach said.

Veteran goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary has rejoined the Egypt squad for the first time since 2014, ahead of the Pharaohs’ friendly match against Burkina Faso, but watched the game from the bench.

The 43-year-old Wadi Degla goalkeeper El-Hadary missed national duty for almost 15 months as the technical staff mainly depended on Ahly’s goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy.

“El-Hadary has been performing well recently and he is brilliant leader in the pitch,” Cuper told the conference.

“He is ready to take part in Nigeria game at any time,” Egypt’s national team manager concluded.

SportsOliseh’s Resignation A Blessing To Nigerian Football – Matori by blazincruz(op): 4:29pm On Feb 27, 2016
Isa Matori, the Chairman of Wikki Tourists Football Club of Bauchi, says the resignation of Sunday Oliseh as Chief Coach of Super Eagles is a blessing to Nigerian football. Oliseh Matori told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Bauchi that the coach should not have been employed in the first place by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“I expected his resignation a long time ago, because I believe that it was a mistake in the first place for the NFF to have appointed him to take care of the team. “He may have the qualifications, no doubt about it, but he does not have the requisite experience, the exposure and courage to lead our team to success,” he said. “He has also been looking for a way out of it. You will understand this when you look at his actions, such as when he had problems with the team captain (Vincent Enyeama) who has dedicated so much commitment to the nation in the area of football.

“He should have sympathised with him when he lost his mother. Even when he (Enyeama) was able to turn up in camp, Oliseh’s reaction was bad. “So, he has been looking for a way to leave the job, and it is a blessing for us as far as I am concerned, because Sunday Oliseh cannot take us anywhere,” the club chairman said.

Also, Umar Said, a Bauchi-based football commentator, supported Matori’s position, describing Oliseh’s resignation as a welcome development in Nigerian football. Said noted that the unending controversies between Oliseh and NFF was the result of the fact that due process was not followed during his engagement.

He pointed out that unlike the appointments of Shuaibu Amodu, Stephen Keshi and foreign coaches, where due process, such as screening, was followed before engagement, Oliseh’s appointment “came through the back door’’.

“In the case of Oliseh, he was smuggled in through the back door and this has caused the country a lot in the field of football,’’ the former state Chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) said. He then called for the engagement of a Grade ‘A’ coach for the team, to enable it forge ahead.

CrimeI Kidnap People To Raise Money For My Girlfriend’s Bride Price –suspect by blazincruz(op): 8:33am On Feb 27, 2016
Uzordima Chukwudi, 29, was a lotto operator before he took to kidnapping, a trade he was into before he was arrested by the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, led by CSP Abba Kyari.

Chukwudi was arrested alongside some other members of the group, including Joseph Chiaotu, aka Ejima, 21, Anozie Chinonso, 25 and 27-year-old Chukwuma Agim, who is a prison official, in connection with the kidnap of a woman in Imo State.

Speaking to journalists during the week, Chukwudi said he was studying Mechanical Engineering at Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State before he dropped out in his final year. “What led me into kidnapping was unfortunate,” he said.

He explained that the pressure to raise the bride price of his pregnant girlfriend lured him into the crime. He said, “My girlfriend is pregnant and I have been under pressure to pay her bride price but I had no money. She told me that since she became pregnant her mother had been ostracised by her fellow women in their village. The pressure was too much that I needed to look for money by all means.”

On how he came across the other suspects, Chukwudi explained that when the pressure became unbearable, he contacted two of his friends; Nnamdi, who is now in prison, and Chiboy, who later introduced him to Agim for the trade.

He said, “Agim, being a prison official, was the one making way for us whenever we approached a police check point but our first operation was not successful because the person we targeted escaped. But on the second operation, Chiboy went with a policeman and they kidnapped the woman.”

He said for his involvement in the deal and for taking food to the victim in the bush, he was given N100,000 as his share. He said, “Chiboy told me that he got only N1.1m from the woman but when we were arrested, the woman told us she paid N3m as ransom. The moment I got my own share, I gave my girlfriend part of it to start the preparation (for the wedding) while I went to the market to buy drinks. That was when I got a call from Agim and when I met him I was arrested.”

Agim, a prison official from Imo State who said he was lured into the trade by an inmate, Nnamdi, told journalists that even though he was able to buy clothes, settle his debts and fix his car with his N100,000 share in the ransom paid by the victim’s family, he regrets his involvement in the act.

He recalled that when he was posted to the Owerri prison, his mother, who was also serving in the prison, warned him to be wary of one inmate, named Vampire, and his friends so as not to get into trouble. He maintained that he was reluctant when Nnamdi approached him but that he later found the offer attractive.

He said they used to work with a policeman and that on the day they went to pick their victim, a woman, she wasn’t the main the target but she was traced to her house where she was picked.

“It was Nnamdi who called me to and look after the woman in the bush. I borrowed money from a friend and used it to buy food for the woman. I gave the food to Uzordima to give to the woman. I learnt the woman stayed for two days. I was given N100, 000 after the N1.1m ransom was collected. I bought clothes, settled my debt and fixed my car.

He said he was arrested few days after the operation. “It was Ejima who led them to me. I regret getting myself into this mess he lamented,” he added.

On his part, Ejima said his share of the ransom was N70,000, out of which he used N10,000 to buy shoes and clothes. “I don’t know how the police heard about what I did; they came after me and arrested me. I led the police to arrest the prison official and four other members of the gang, but we were unable to arrest Chiboy. He noticed the presence of the police and he attempted to escape. He ran into the bus and the police fired several shots at him but he wasn’t hit.

Chinonso, who also hailed from Imo State, said poverty led him into kidnapping. “All I was looking for was a little money to buy a bus on hire purchase because the one I had got spoilt. I met Ejima recently and I told him I needed assistance because I had no job. He promised he would help me.”

He explained that he participated in the kidnap and that his share was N100,000 but that he was arrested when he was about hiring a bus. “It was poverty that led me into this crime. I am a very poor person struggling for myself and my family. I have no one helping me and my mother is a very old woman. I pray this woman (the victim) and her family would forgive me, he said.

By Favour Nnabugwu

Mysterious headache and stomach pains have killed 16 children and youths in Saburi 1, a village opposite Mopol Barracks along Kubwa expressway, Abuja. Saturday Vanguard on Thursday visited the palace of the Chief of the village, Alhaji Mohammed Yamawo who was said to have traveled out of Abuja for an urgent assignment. Speaking to Saturday Vanguard on the development, the Son of the village Chief, Alhaji Halidu Mohammed confirmed that 16 persons whose ages ranged between 10 and 25 years had been officially reported at the palace to have died within the last two weeks.

L- Aminat and Aishat daughters of Alhaji Ibrahim Nuhu, aged 12 and 10, who both died of headache ands abdominal pains within four days interval & Dickson, aged 15, son of Mr Joshua Abuwata who died of headache, confirmed died on arrival at a hospital According to him, “families of the deceased persons came to the palace that their sons and daughters complain of headache and stomach pains and died just like that before they could reach Kubwa General Hospital or Garki General Hospital.”

“We do not have big hospital in our community except for few private ones that look more or less like chemists.” “The chief invited some medical experts from town to come and uncover the cause of the sudden deaths but the Doctors could not pin the headache or stomach pains to any sickness or disease” A father who lost two of his daughters to the cold hands of death, Alhaji Ibrahim Nuhu said the senior daughter, Aminat died complaining of headache while her junior sister, Aishat died four days after.

Nuhu told Saturday Vanguard, “My senior daughter Aminat complained of headache and we administered paracetamol on her thinking that it would subside after some minutes but it did not.

We then decided to go to hospital for proper examination and treatment but before we got to the hospital Aminat died on the way.” “We were gathered after four days for a prayer session for the late Aminat when her junior sister, Aishat, started complaining of a similar pain and she died almost immediately. It was a terrible blow on me and their mother.” As to what could be responsible for the strange deaths, Nuhu said, he had no idea, adding that he left the whole thing in the hands of the Almighty Allah. Another father who lost a 16 year old son, Mr Joshua Abuwata could not hold back his tears while narrating his ordeal to Saturday Vanguard.

He said his second son, Dickson started complaining of headache which he initially thought was a minor thing, sent for paracetamol for him and ensured he took it before the boy went inside their apartment only to come out some hours later looking dunce and staring in the air.

Abuwata went on, “When he started staring into the atmosphere without uttering a word or responding to me, it dawned on me that something was indeed wrong. I held him, yet he did not say a word.

He went inside the kitchen served himself food but he could not locate where his mouth was and therefore mired his whole face with soup.” “At that point, l knew it was very serious, so l cleaned him up to take him to the hospital only for him to drop dead.

I have never seen or experienced such death in my life.” Some residents who spoke to Saturday Vanguard said government should help investigate what was going on in their village, arguing that neighboring villages were not experiencing such tragedy. They alleged that that the sudden death started happening five days after the village head carried out a sacrifice during which he went round the village with some of his people.

They further alleged that the 16 persons were just the ones that were reported at the palace, that the number of children and youths who lost their lives in that circumstance in the last 14 days were up to 27.

However, residents of Saburi 1 community called on the council authorities to build a primary health care centre in the community to relieve them of the difficulties in accessing medical services. The residents, who lamented that the absence of a clinic in the village constituted a source of worry for them, said the search for medical attention took them to distant places.

The village Prince said that the presence of a clinic in the community would be of great importance as villagers could easily access medical services anytime, lamenting that the benefit has eluded them, even with the size of their population. Similar deaths were recorded in Lagos communities where about 20 children lost their lives. Cause of death was unknown until last Monday when authorities in Lagos confirmed the children died missiles. Even medical officials and the media attributed the tragedy to mysterious causes. Now, Abuja community is experiencing same.
