BIRTHDAY FELICITATIONS TO AN ICON @ 89

On behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Staff and Students of the University of Benin, we felicitate with our iconic first Female Vice Chancellor, Professor Grace Alele-Williams on the special occasion of her 89th birthday anniversary.

As a renowned scholar and trailblazer, Professor Alele-Williams has continued to serve as a role model to many generations of academics and Administrators. An epitome of hard work, commitment, diligence and resilience, her remarkable achievements in education, administration, public life and demonstrable zeal for excellence are indeed a template for public office holders and all who desire to make a difference in their calling.

For us at the University of Benin, it is a thing of joy that such an iconic figure served and left her indelible footprints in the Institution. We are proud to be associated with a lady who broke the glass ceiling, thereby opening the floodgate for more women to aspire to and attain enviable heights.

May God continue to grant her excellent health and fulfillment always.

The University of Benin has released the results of the 2021/2022 Post Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Post Direct Entry Screening.

This was announced by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, PhD, in a statement issued on Wednesday, in Benin City.

She said: “A summary of the results indicates that out of 11,110 candidates who sat for the PUTME screening, 8,687 of them, representing 78.2 percent, were successful.

“For the Direct Entry(PUDE) screening, 422 candidates, representing 62.4 percent, were successful out of the 676 candidates who were screened.”

Ehanire advised candidates to check for their results at their respective Kofa page as the results have been uploaded.

Engr. Osasere Osifo honours UNIBEN's Overall Best Graduating Student, Mr. Abanum with N250k

Mr. Henry Ogorchukwu Abanum, the overall best graduating student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) at the just concluded 46th and 47th combined Convocation Ceremonies of the institution, has been honoured with the “Osasere Osifo Prize for Academic Excellence” award.

The Academic Excellence Prize is an initiative of Engr. Osasere Favour Osifo, a former President of the UNIBEN Students' Union, who is currently the Vice-President of the University of Benin Alumni Association North America (UBAANA) chapter, and also a member of the United States (U.S.) Airforce.

The award presentation ceremony took place on Monday at the University of Benin Students' Affairs Division. Mr. Abanum, who graduated with a First Class, 4.97 GPA, from the Faculty of Pharmacy, was honoured with the sum of N250,000 by Engr. Osifo in recognition of his academic excellence.

Speaking at the Award ceremony, Engr. Osifo lamented that celebrating mediocrity and shunning excellence was fast becoming a norm in today's society, hence, the coming on board of the Osasere Osifo Prize for Academic Excellence to change the narrative.

Represented by a former Public Relations Officer of the UNIBEN SUG, Comrade Oguche Divine Omale, Engr. Osifo said the academic feat achieved by Mr. Abanum should be applauded by all lovers of excellence, hard work, and diligence.

In honouring Mr. Abanum, Engr. Osifo said the Osasere Osifo Prize for Academic Excellence hopes to inspire other Nigerian students to make excellence their cardinal objective as they go through the four walls of the university.

He expressed confidence that the award was the beginning of every good thing to come the way of the awardee by graduating top of his class and as overall best in the University of Benin.

Engr. Osifo said Mr. Abanum had proven that quality is never an accident, but the result of intelligent effort, adding that the intelligent effort of Mr. Henry Abanum is what is being rewarded today.

Those present at the Award ceremony held at the Ugbowo Campus of the University of Benin include the institution's Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. Patrick Igbinaduwa; and the Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy, the awardee's faculty, Prof. Mike Uhumwangho.

Other representatives of Engr. Osifo present at the event includes the Public Relations Officer of the UNIBEN Alumni Association, Comrade Kevin Omokaro Kaka; Comrade Nosakhare Eguagie; NANS Leaders including Comrades Imadeyogie Stephen, Pius Effam Payeke, and CAMPUS GIST publisher, Ogochukwu Isioma.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with family, friends and associates of Edo born legendary musician and multi-talented artiste, Sir Victor Uwaifo, who passed on Saturday.

In a statement made available to CAMPUS GIST issued by presidential spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, the president said the deceased left behind a legacy of successes in many areas of life, including academia and administration.

“The President joins the Nigerian music industry and performing artistes, home and abroad, in mourning the former first Honourable Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism (Edo State), who was also the first musician and instrumentalist to be given National Honours Merit, Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) in 1983.

“President Buhari believes the renowned musician, with global appeal and recognitions, lived for many firsts, which include invitation to the State House by four presidents and Heads of State, and winner of a gold disc in Africa for his song, “Joromi’’, released in 1965 at the age of 24.

“The President notes the glory that Sir Uwaifo brought to Nigeria through his international tours, and the active role he played in national development, returning to school to get a first degree at age 54 with first class honours, masters degree at 56, and a doctorate at 77,” the statement added.

President Buhari prayed for the soul of the departed musician, writer, sculptor, musical instrument inventor and university lecturer, noting that the entire country, particularly the music industry, will sorely miss him.

Famous Edo music legend, Sir Victor Uwaifo, fondly called the “Guitar Boy”, is dead.

CAMPUS GIST reliably gathered that the music legend died on Saturday August 28th after a “brief illness.”

He was 80.

Until his demise, Sir Uwaifo was a lecturer at the University of Benin, Benin City.

The “Joromi” maestro, who in March this year turned 80, had revealed that music makes him high. This was at a dinner hosted by the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, to mark the music star's 80th birthday anniversary.

On his part, Chief Igbinedion, while hosting the legendary highlife musician to the dinner, had equally disclosed that Sir Uwaifo had a humble beginning selling kola-nuts in his childhood days on the streets of Benin to survive.

Born on 1st March 1941, Sir (Prof.) Victor Uwaifo, MON, was a Nigerian musician, writer, sculptor, musical instrument inventor and University lecturer. A music legend, he was the first Honorable Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Nigeria.

The deceased was the winner of the first gold disc in Africa (Joromi) released in 1965 and seven other gold discs in Guitar boy, Arabade, Ekassa series and Akwete music. He records under the name Victor Uwaifo and His TItibitis. He was recognized as the most educated performing music legend, musical instrument inventor, artist, worldwide with a B.A Honors (first class valedictorian), Masters degree and Ph.D in Architectural Sculpture, University of Benin.

One of the most notable and philanthropic politicians from South-East, Chief (Hon.) Alex Ikwechegh, has turned plus one today 25th August. But unlike the past, the philanthropist is not marking the 41st birthday anniversary. Rather, Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, popularly referred to as the “Nkuma Dike Ndigbo”, is dedicating the occasion to fallen soldiers and victims of banditry, kidnaping and other crimes against humanity in the country.

The Founder of Alex Ikwechegh Foundation and GrossField Group, said it was difficult for any rational thinking individual to celebrate anything under the current state of this country.
“We are alive and healthy while others suffer and mourn the loss of their family members due to the pervading insecurity plaguing all areas of the nation,” he said.

“I dedicate this day to the gallant soldiers that lost their lives yesterday while simply doing their jobs at the Nigerian Defence Academy. I dedicate this day to those faithful women who have lost husbands due to banditry.

“I dedicate this day to those children that have died in the hands of kidnappers and rapists on their way to school. I dedicate this day to those people going through serious challenging times. Our good Lord hears your cry and sees your suffering and shall surely deliver everyone.”

Chief Alex Ikwechegh’s past birthdays were marked with week-long philanthropic activities and benevolence including the traditional distribution of free fuel and kerosene to the good people of Abia. To mark his 40th birthday last year, Chief Ikwechegh embarked on distribution of free palliatives to Abia people, including donation of cash gifts to widows and other philanthropic gestures.

The great fans, supporters and followers Hon. Alex Ikwechegh command does not come as a surprise to any owing to his numerous projects and programs for humanity and nation building. He has remained the hope of several persons within Abia and across the South East.

Ahead of last year's yuletide, as it has always been an old tradition for the Alex Ikwechegh Foundation boss, Hon. Alex donated items including bags of rice, cartons of noodles, fuel, kerosene and other palliatives to households and orphanage homes.

Chief Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, the ‘Nkuma Dike Ndigbo’, has through his Alex Ikwechegh Foundation, donated to the poor and carried out several philanthropic gestures across the country. His distribution of free fuel and kerosene has become an annual event in the whole of Abia state, a gesture which marks the philanthropist's August 25th birthdays.

During the coronavirus-imposed lockdown across the country, the founder of GrossField Group embarked on free distribution of palliatives to the good people of Abia state. He also, through his Alex Ikwechegh Foundation, donated cash gifts and other items to widows in Abia and offset the hospital bills of many including a woman whose fingers were allegedly cut off by Fulani herders in the State.

Hon. Ikwechegh had in 2019 donated household items including mattresses, pots, buckets, food items and clothing to victims of police attacks in Ndiegoro, a community in Aba South local government area of Abia. Also not left out in Alex Ikwechegh's numerous philanthropic acts is the former NEPA cash office in Igbere, which now wears a new look, following its reconstruction by the philanthropist.

In the area of security, because Alex Ikwechegh believes his people must be protected at all times, the Aba-born philanthropist has carried out donation of vehicles to several vigilante groups. As a lover of education, Hon. Alex Ikwechegh has thousands of students under his Alex Ikwechegh Foundation scholarship scheme, including pupils and students from Abia.

He singlehandedly reconstructed the Igbere Community secondary school in Igbere, Abia State, and has continued to donate millions to uplift the downtrodden and orphans in the society at every given opportunity.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Lilian Salami, says the University is pre-disposed to efforts that will add value to the Institution's goals and objectives amongst which is the production of internationally competitive graduates.

A statement issued on Friday by the University's Spokesperson, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, said the VC stated this on Friday in Benin when she played host to the Management team of the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority led by the Managing Director, Engineer Saliu Ahmed.

Professor Salami who was impressed with the River Basin Authority's research projects in the University, pointed out that the students in the Faculties of Life Sciences, Agriculture and Engineering were the greatest beneficiaries as their practical knowledge base would be enhanced. The VC, therefore, said she was ready to support any effort geared towards sustenance of the projects.

Managing Director of the Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority, Engineer Ahmed, who is an alumnus of the University, praised the Vice Chancellor for achieving so much in such a short time of assuming office.

He said he was happy that the partnership with the University, especially in the setting up of a joint Analytical Laboratory at the Faculty of Life Sciences, was yielding the desired results in the quality of graduates being produced by the Faculty.

Describing the University of Benin as a great resource base, Engineer Ahmed asked for more collaborations in the area of agriculture inorder to successfully key into the federal government'sshift of focus from oil to agriculture.

The Managing Director announced that a new borehole project with overhead storage tanks is to be connected to the Laboratory building. The project is expected to be completed within a month.

Other members of the University Management were also present during the visit.

The Vice Chancellor of University of Benin, UNIBEN, Professor Lilian Salami, has been elected as Vice President of the Association of African Universities, AAU.

This comes barely five months after the UNIBEN second female Vice Chancellor was appointed Alternate Chairperson, Committee of Vice Chancellors in Nigeria, CVCN.

With this latest role, Salami holds the record as the first UNIBEN and female Vice Chancellor to hold the position in the African varsities’ association. She will be representing the West African region in the AAU.

Other elected members of the AAU new Governing Board are Professor Saeed Bakri Osman as President; Professor Mohammed Hussein, Vice President (North Africa) and Professor Theresia Nkwo Akenji, Vice President (Central Africa).

Former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Professor Olusola Oyewole, was named as Secretary-General of the association.

The Association of African Universities (AAU), is headquartered in Accra, Ghana, and is an apex organization. The Association provides a platform for research, reflection, consultation, debates, co-operation and collaboration on issues pertaining to higher education.

It provides a range of services to its members and serves African higher education in a variety of ways. It has established and increased its role in the five sub-regions of Africa and can assemble teams of experts in relevant fields from the sub-regions.

The University of Benin has matriculated 12, 241 newly admitted students out of the 50, 555 candidates who sought admission into the institution for the current academic session.

Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Lilian Salami, announced this during the matriculation ceremony held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions.

However, two selected students each from the Faculties were physically present at the Akin Deko Main Auditorium, venue of the matriculation, with strict adherence to existing COVID-19 protocols.
Professor Salami congratulated the new intakes for being among the few lucky ones who were offered admission, urging them to be law-abiding students of the University.

She expressed optimism that the students will imbibe the virtues of discipline and diligence that will distinguish them as worthy undergraduates of UNIBEST. She warned that the institution will not condone any form of nefarious activities.

Professor Salami urged the new students to obey the University's rules and regulations in and out of campus.

She advised the matriculated students to desist from any act capable of tarnishing the image of either their parents, the University and even Nigeria at large.

The Vice Chancellor reminded the new students that they were in school to study and must take their education seriously.

CAMPUS GIST reports that some of the matriculating students appreciated the opportunity to study in the institution, promising to be law abiding.

BENIN CITY — BUA group has commended the administrative efforts of the University of Benin led by its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami. This was on Tuesday 27th July during a courtesy call on the institution’s Vice Chancellor at her office, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Founder and Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji AbdulSamad Rabiu, who gave the commendation, said the University was in safe hands with Prof. Salami as Vice Chancellor. He commended the University administration for their commitment to ensuring the highest standards in tertiary education at UNIBEN.

Represented by Mr Udoh Ubon, Managing Director of the Abdul Samad Rabiu (ASR) African Initiative, an initiative of BUA Group, Rabiu said the group was at the University to formally present an educational grant under the ASR to UNIBEN for the development of its critical infrastructure.

Ubon quoted Founder and Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji AbdulSamad Rabiu, as saying that UNIBEN was chosen as one of the six Universities in Nigeria in recognition of its quality services and the pedigree of its graduates both locally and internationally.

He said ASR Africa Initiative – the brainchild of Abdul Samad Rabiu, would be providing the grant of N1 billion Naira to UNIBEN as part of its yearly $100 million ASR Africa Fund for Social Development and Renewal. This grant will be channeled towards ICT for the students and the Student Affairs Building as identified by the University today.

Meanwhile, Mr Ubon commended the Vice Chancellor for promptly identifying the projects that needed intervention, while revealing that the other five universities have also identified such projects with the ASR team to fast-track the project initiation.

Responding, and in her remarks, Prof. Salami expressed appreciation to the BUA Group Chairman and Founder for the grant and noted that it will enable the institution meet pressing development needs which will positively impact the quality of education being delivered at the university.

The Vice Chancellor promised to work with the BUA Group to deliver a project that would be the pride of both the beneficiary and benefactor, adding, “the projects we have selected will have impact on our students not just for now but even for posterity.”

She praised the Founder of the ASR African Initiative and Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji AbdulSamad Rabiu, for his consistent commitment to social good and commended the philanthropic work of the group’s chairman.

The Vice Chancellor also extolled the good works of ASR across Africa and thanked the philanthropist for the grant. She assured the representatives that the University Management, Staff and Students will be forever be grateful to ASR Africa for this gesture.

The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the University Management team had carefully identified the Student Affairs Building and ICT as projects to be covered by the grant to train its students for global relevance and competitiveness.

“COVID-19 has shown that we are not ready for ICT despite living in a global village, hence, the need to train and equip our students on ICT for them to be able to compete favourably with their counterparts globally,” she said.

Prof. Salami told the benefactor that the University of Benin is a world-class institution with a vision for sustainable development of the society, saying that the University looks for a continuous relationship with ASR Initiative.

Describing the Chairman and Founder of BUA as a very patriotic Nigerian who believes in the development of Nigeria, the Vice Chancellor revealed that Rabiu is an alumnus of the University having been awarded an honorary degree in the past.

Highpoint of the visit was the formal presentation of the Nomination letter conveying the award to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami by the ASR African Initiative MD, Mr. Udoh Ubon.

Mr Ubon was accompanied on the visit to the University of Benin Vice Chancellor by the Head, Corporate Communications, BUA Group, Mr. O’tega Ogra and other members of the team.

The ASR Africa Initiative, which is the brainchild of industrialist and Philanthropist, Abdul Samad Rabiu, grants $100 million annually for social development and renewal, focusing on education, health and social development issues within the African continent – with Nigeria to benefit $50 million yearly and the rest of Africa, $50 miilion dollars in what is the largest private philanthropic giving of its kind by an individual in Africa.

The University of Benin is one of the six Nigerian Universities carefully selected across the country’s six geopolitical zones in a first cohort that will benefit from a donation of N1 billion each from the initiative as part of its Tertiary Education Grants Scheme.

BENIN CITY — The Abdul Samad Rabiu (ASR) African Initiative, an initiative of the BUA Group, has offered a N1 billion grant to the University of Benin (UNIBEN) for the development of its infrastructure.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, PhD, in a statement on Tuesday, said the letter conveying the award had been presented to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami.

Ehanire quoted Mr Ubon Udoh, Managing Director of ASR African Initiative, as saying that UNIBEN qualified for the nomination as a result of the quality of its service delivery and impact on society, accessibility as well as its high level of gender sensitivity among others.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor of the institution expressed appreciation to the BUA Group Chairman for the grant, which she said is expected to birth a state of the art ICT building and an ultra modern Students' Affairs edifice in the institution.

“The Vice Chancellor was confident that the Grant, when actualised, will greatly enhance the University's infrastructure and also ensure global competitiveness of the graduates, many of who are currently making their marks in various spheres of endeavour,” Ehanire said.

The University of Benin is one of the six Nigerian Universities nominated for the Education Grant by the BUA Group as part of Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu's give back to the African continent initiative.

Esther Benyeogo, the lady with the breathtaking voice, has been crowned winner of The Voice Nigeria Season 3 after 16 weeks of intense musical battle.

In the finale on Saturday July 24, she went up against finalists Kpee, Eazzie, Naomi Mac, Dapo, and Kitay.

As the winner, Esther goes home with a grand prize of N10 million cash prize, a car, and a recording deal with Universal Music Nigeria.

Here are eleven things to know about her.

1. Esther Ebelechukwu Benyeogo was born on the 15th September 1997 in Delta State where she was raised.

2. She is the last of six children.

3. She is an indigene of Ika North Local Government Area in Delta State.

4. Her late father was a medical doctor while her mother is a retired school principal.

5. Esther discovered her singing gift at age 13 encouraged by her elder siblings who are also singers.

6. She is a graduate of English and Literature from the University of Benin.

7. Esther is not new to singing competitions. She was first runner-up in the Next Big Teen talent competition organized by Teens church of Christ Embassy in 2012.

8. At 19, she emerged winner in GOD’s Children’s Great Talent (GCGT) Season 7 on June 21, 2017, where she went home with a 250 million Naira management contract, 10 million Naira cash and a brand new Kia Rio. (see 4th pics).

9. She was featured on TY Bello’s spontaneous worship series ‘We Worship You’ in 2018.

10. Esther released her first EP named “Carry Me ” in 2020.

Esther Benyeogo has emerged the winner of season 3 of The Voice Nigeria 2021, an International talent show.

This was announced at the Grand Finale, which aired live on African Magic and other platforms, on Saturday, monitored by CAMPUS GIST.

CAMPUS GIST reports that, Esther is a 2019 graduate of the University of Benin, where she bagged a Bachelor's degree from Department of English and Literature.

She battled against three other top finalists, coming out victorious and grabbing the N10 million cash, a car, and a record deal with Universal Music Nigeria.

The six talents who battled for the coveted prize are Naomi Mac, Esther, Dapo, Kitah, Kpee and Eazzie who scaled through to the final stage out of the 25 talents who started the contest.

The coaches in the musical contest include popular artistes: Falz, Yemi Alade, Waje and Dare.

The top three for the show was Esther and Kpee in Team Dare and Eazzie in Team Waje.

However, Esther sang her way to the top and with support from fans through massive votings, she emerged victorious.

The show, which started three months ago, saw electrifying musical performances from the contestants, and a blend of rigorous musical training and pure entertainment.

Speaking on her win, Esther said: “I am grateful to The Voice Nigeria and my fans out there for this amazing experience. It has been my utmost joy to come on your screens every week and share my gift on such a huge platform. This win is even more special for me because it is one thing to know you have a gift, but it means everything to be recognized for that gift. I must however give thanks to God without whom I would not be here today and also appreciate my family and friends for their love, support, and prayers. Of course, I am thankful to my Coach, Coach Darey, for making my time here truly rewarding, and for equipping me with the skills to give this my best shot.”

Atiku Abubakar's Strong loyalist set to give Yahaya Bello full support for the 2023 Presidential Race

The frontliner of the 2019 gubernatorial election in Kebbi state who also doubles as former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s closest loyalist, Idris Ibrahim Kalgo, has dumped his former boss for the candidacy of H.E Yahaya Bello of Kogi state come 2023.

Idris who is young, energetic and a big force in the campaign of the Atiku Abubakar (AA) in 2019 has lately been spotted with the Governor of Kogi state. When interviewed, Idris said he would rather prefer a young and energetic Nigerian with lot of experiences and doubles as a sitting Governor to pilot the affairs of Nigeria, than his former boss Atiku.

Idris Ibrahim Kalgo has promised to champion the Coalition of Support Groups for Yahaya Bello come 2023.
In his words: “The Coalition is expected to have over 20 million Nigerians with the youths as majority to return their own to power come 2023 rather than recycling old and empty leaders.”

‘Aggressive malpractice’: Investigation still on course, UNIBEN assures

Investigation into the case of a 400 level student who, in a viral video, ascribed her academic success to ‘aggressive malpractice’ is still on course, the University of Benin has assured.

This was in reaction to reports making the rounds that the female Microbiology student, Peace Ufuoma, has been asked to resit her exams from 200 level to final year as punishment for her actions.

An official of the University told CAMPUS GIST on Wednesday that Management was following due process on the matter and yet to receive reports from the Panel set up to investigate the case.

The University Management, therefore, asked the general public to discountenance the report that the 400 level student had already been penalized, insisting it was fake news.

“The general public is advised to discountenance reports making the rounds that Peace Ufuoma has been asked to resit her exams from 200 level to final year as it's FAKE NEWS.

“The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is following due process and Panels set up to investigate the development are yet to send reports to Management,” the official told CAMPUS GIST on phone.

The University Management had last week set up a Panel to probe all the results of the student after she wore a sign out shirt with the inscription “aggressive malpractice brought me this far” during her final year signing out ritual.
