Politics › FG Finally Breaks Silence, Speaks On Omah Lay's Arrest In Uganda by BleedingPen(op): 3:03pm On Dec 15, 2020 |
The Nigerian government has formally taken steps to secure the release of music stars Omah Lay and Tems - who were both arrested and remanded in an Ugandan prison.
Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the Nigerian mission in Uganda is doing everything in its power to get the singers out.
Dabiri-Erewa, in a tweet sighted by Igbere TV on her Twitter handle, wrote; “#FreeOmahLay #FreeTems . The Nigerian mission in Uganda is doing everything to get them freed. Minister @GeoffreyOnyeamahas also been on the matter. @nidcom_gov is also in touch with their Lawyers.”
Igbere TV recalls that the trio of Stanley Didia, aka Omah Lay; Temilade Openyi, alias Ms Tems; and Muyiwa Awomiyi were arrested in Uganda.
Omah Lay was later remanded at the Kitalya prison and Ms Tems at Kigo prison - both in Uganda.
They were charged in a magistrate court in Makindye, Uganda, on Monday for “negligently doing acts likely to spread an infectious disease C/S 171 of the Penal Code Act.”
They were jointly charged with four other Ugandans and remanded till Wednesday.
The crew got arrested in Uganda by Katwe Police after performing at a concert in the country.
The concert is said to contravene President Museveni’s directives on social gatherings in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.
The president placed a ban on all music concerts, closed down bars, banned fans at all sporting events and reduced the number of people who could attend church services. |

Politics › Edo 2020 Governorship: Tribunal Rules Against Governor Obaseki by BleedingPen(op): 12:11pm On Dec 15, 2020 |
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki’s motion seeking to strike out the names of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and the All Progressives Party (APC) from the petition filed by the Action Democratic Party (ADP) has suffered a setback at the Edo State Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City.
Besides, Igbere TV reports that the tribunal also declined to strike out ADP’s petition against Governor Obaseki, insisting it would hear it on its merit as against the request of the governor.
The petition of the ADP and its governorship candidate obtained by Igbere TV, on Tuesday, is with reference number: EPT/ED/GOV/01/2020, with INEC, PDP, Obaseki, APC and its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, as respondents.
The party prayed the tribunal to disqualify Obaseki over his controversial first degree certificate from the University of Ibadan (UI) and nullify the votes cast for him, thereby ordering INEC to conduct a fresh election involving all other qualified governorship candidates, excluding PDP and Obaseki.
The tribunal had in a short ruling this morning declined Governor Obaseki’s request in the case challenging the qualifications of the governor to contest the September 19thgovernorship election in the state.
At the resumed hearing in the petition N0. EPT/ED/GOV/01/2020, Action Democratic Party & Anor v. Independent National Electoral Commission & Ors, the tribunal ruled on two separate motions filed by INEC and PDP, seeking to strike the petition of ADP against Governor Obaseki and strike out the names of APC and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu respectively.
Disappointingly, the court rejected their motions and refused to strike out the petition and the names of APC and Ize-Iyamu.

Politics › Senate Leader Goes Emotional As Orji Kalu Hosts Him To Birthday Surprise(Photos) by BleedingPen(op): 4:08pm On Dec 12, 2020*. Modified: 4:25pm On Dec 12, 2020 |
Thursday's plenary session at the National Assembly ended on a note filled with delight and emotions for the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi as the Kebbi North Senator who turned a year older was treated to Birthday Suprise by the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
Sitting at Red Chambers prior to the commencement of the day's plenary, while awaiting the coming of Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Senator Yahaya intimated Senator Kalu that the day being December 10th was his Birthday.
Armed with the information Senator Kalu fast tracked the arrangement of a Birthday cake inscribed with the name of the Senate Leader without the knowledge of the celebrant. The cake was conveyed to the Chief Whip's office. Upon the arrival of the Senate President to begin sittng, Senator Kalu whispered to the Senate President, Deputy Leader of the Senate, Senator Borofice Ajayi and some other Senators on his plan. At the end of the plenary the Senate President and some other Senators proceeded to Senator Kalu's office while the celebrant Yahaya was asked by Senator Kalu to join him for a crucial meeting in his office.
On arrival at Senator Kalu's office, Senator Yahaya was greeted with a Birthday cake inscribed with his name, followed by a Birthday song rendered by the Senate President and others present.
Speaking at the office of the Senate Chief Whip, an emotional ladden Yahaya who turned '70' disclosed that the mini Birthday celebration was the second time he would be treated to such suprise in his entire life.
Giving his speech amid tears of joy rolling down his cheeks and taking off his eyeglasses, the celebrant expressed his gratitude to Senator Kalu for pulling off such in just few hours saying that he never expected it.
In his words "This is the second time in my life that I would be treated to a Birthday surprise. The first time was when I was in the civil service and this makes it the second time. I am grateful to Senator Kalu for this, honestly I am in short of words because I never expected it. I just told him to wish me well in his prayers not knowing he could organise a cake not only that mobilise the Senate President, the Deputy Leader and others to come and celebrate me.
“I have never been this honoured on my Birthday, I also specially thank the Senate President for being here to celebrate me. I will never forget this day in my life. Bursting with words of encouragement,Lawan spared special words for the Senate Leader describing him as honest, committed and dedicated to work.”
Lawan also thanked Senator Kalu for pulling off the mini occasion on very short notice.
He said, "The credit goes to you to Senator Orji Kalu, I am not surprised that the Chief Whip has decided to do this. This kind of occasion gives you a reality of the perception that we your colleagues have about you.
"We are all desirous of ensuring that this leader continues to shine. When the leader shines than those who are led also shine. You have been absolutely fantastic I knew you from 2003 when I was in the house of Representatives and you and up to this time you have been the same person. You are the same person that is honest and committed,I have enjoyed that relationship from 2003 till date and we are all very proud of you. May God continue to give you good health, long life and continue guide you and give you better opportunities to serve your people.”
Senator Kalu on his part narrated to the visibly excited principal actors of the Red Chambers how he organized the mini Birthday reception.
He said, "The leader told me casually this morning that it was his Birthday; you know me and him are usually the first to arrive the chambers to welcome the Senate President.
"So without him knowing I stood up and called out the Senate President's secretary to quickly go and order for a cake with the name of the Senate Leader on it and send it to my office and hide it there.”
He continued, “Senator Yahaya is a technocrat and a committed person who wants to work for the benefit of the people, heis man who loves to work. I tell people that whatever that is worth doing is worth doing well and I feel that leaders birthday should be marked, not necessarily with a feast. But this a token to continue showing the love we have for him and the work he has been doing for the Senate President and for all the Senators. It wasn't planned it was just initiated this morning and this morning I told the deputy Senate leader.”
Also present were; Senator Yaroe Binos Dauda; Senator Istifanus Gyang Deputy; Senate Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Borofice Robert Ajayi and Senator Amos Bulus Kilawangs.

Politics › Senate Grants Kalu's Motion To End Illegal Mining, Gold Smuggling In Nigeria by BleedingPen(op): 3:45pm On Dec 09, 2020 |
Kenneth Udeh, Abuja
Resolutions to bring an end to illegal mining and gold smuggling in the country and investigation to an annual loss of 9Billion Dollars in Nigeria's mining sector as result of the aforementioned illegal activities were reached by the Senate on Wednesday.
The decisions were made following a motion moved by Abia-North Senator and Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu on the need to investigate Nigeria’s yearly loss of 9 Billion US Dollars as result of illegal mining and Gold smuggling, Igbere TV reports.
The Senate presided by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo Agege urged the Executive to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining activities and seal up all revenue leakages from such clandestine activities; and the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Mines, Steel Development and Metallurgy to investigate this matter and report back to the Senate in 6 weeks.
Giving analysis to his colleagues,Kalu disclosed that Nigeria lost close to $54b from 2012 2018 due to illegal smuggling of gold. While also pointing out that the country is said to be losing about $9 billion yearly to illegal mining and gold exportation, a huge amount of money unaccounted for through under the radar sales of the expensive commodity.
Kalu disclosed further that the activities of unlicensed miners were becoming prevalent within the industry and the incessant smuggling of the solid mineral out of the country by middlemen and smugglers, is leading to loss of government revenue.
According to Kalu gold mining operations in Nigeria is capable of providing no fewer than 250,000 jobs and over $500 million dollars annually in royalties and taxes to the federal government and as mineral resources.
Raising additional concerns Kalu explained that jobs and revenue accrued to the mining sector would further diversify the nation's economy and improve the foreign exchange reserve. He elucidated that due to Nigeria's current estimated gold reserves of over 200million ounces, most of which have not been exploited, developing sustainable programmes that will catalyse increased investment in the extraction and refining of gold sourced from mines in Nigeria, is indeed vital.
Making reference to data obtained from the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Development, Kalu revealed that there are gold deposits in Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Abia, Bauchi, Cross River, Edo, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, Oyo, Kogi, Zamfara, Osun and Kaduna states.
Kalu argued that if the country conserves her gold reserves, and ensures effective exploitation, the accruing revenue would surpass that of oil and gas.
Kalu drew the attention of colleagues to section 44 (3) of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Iaw of 1999 which provides that ownership and control of all minerals in Nigeria is vested in the federal government, which is mandated to manage such natural resources in a manner as may be prescribed by the National Assembly.
In his lead discourse Senator Kalu told the Senate illegal mining is a major factor responsible for the stunted growth in the mining sector.
He said "Distinguished colleagues, you will agree with me that illegal mining is one of the key challenges hindering the development of Nigeria’s mining industry. If we don’t fix this hemorrhage of our economy, we would literally bleed to death.
"In fact according to Signal One International, SOI, a US based company, disclosed in a 2016 report that Nigeria has lost over $50 billion in gold revenue tax in two years as a result of illegal mining and exportation of unprocessed gold. Also reports from the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI indicated that Nigeria lost about nine billion dollars to illegal mining operations and gold exportation from 2014 to 2015 and in six years accrued to $54 billion dollars", Kalu concluded.
Kalu beckoned the Senate to intensify further efforts to combat illegal mining activities, seal up all revenue leakages.
Contributing to the debate Senator Smart Adeyemi expressed support for the motion , the Kogi west Senator raised concerns on global drop in the demand for crude oil and gas which was the nation's main source of revenue. He stressed the need to protect the mining sector which would serve as an alternative source of revenue for the country.
In his words " The global economy today is contemplating how to reduce the use of crude oil and gas . In years to come many nations that depend on oil and gas will start looking at renewable energy. In essence pioneer producing nations will start looking for an alternative. Today countries are finding it hard to sell their oil.
"If you look at Zamfara state there is an enormous deposit of Gold. In the night you see trailers conveying foreigners and these are people involved in illegal mining. We have to engage the executives, because the solid mineral sector needs serious attention beyond just talking.
Senator Ajayi Borofice in his support to the motion said the Nation's Gold deposit was beyond that of South Africa , stating the need for the sector to be protected from exploitation.
