The management of University of Benin (UNIBEN) has warned students against “shortputting” on campus, especially within the halls of residence, saying such act ‘is highly prohibited.’

The warning was contained in the latest ‘rules and regulation’ to resident students, over the weekend, ahead of the February 1, 2021 resumption of academic activities.

“Shortputting” is the act of passing out faeces in a nylon or polythene bag and disposing the waste in the open by mostly flinging them away. This practice is common among students.

The UNIBEN management also said the sale or transfer of hostel bed space is highly prohibited, warning against squatting of any form.

“Students must reside only in the rooms allocated to them without exchanging or substitution,” it said, adding, “only bonafide (registered) students are allowed to live in the halls of residence.”

“All students must carry the hall identity card at all times and must be prepared to show it on demand by any hall official”, warning students against bringing into the halls of residence pets and heavy electrical gadgets.

Such items which are now banned include: hot plate, electric kettle, washing machine, drier, toasters, grills, immersion heater, refrigerator, curling iron, microwave oven, gas cylinder and gas cooker.

While warning student residents against cooking in their hostel rooms, the University directed all hall occupants to make use of utility rooms instead.

“Fighting, stealing and activities such as shouting, loud music that constitute disturbance to others in the halls [of residence] are highly prohibited.”

UNIBEN restricted visitors to halls of residence to the common rooms (between the hours of 4pm-6pm daily), saying, ‘visitors are not allowed into students’ room.

While warning hostel users against bathing outside their rooms’ bathrooms, UNIBEN mandated all hall occupants to clean their rooms regularly.

“All complaints should be lodged with the porter or any hall official”, it said, adding, “hanging of clothes on hand railings of the hall ways or room railings inside the hostel is prohibited.”

“No defacing, writing, or posting of bills on walls, tree, electric poles etc. in and around the hostel and school premises,” UNIBEN warned further.

The students’ rule book said pouring of water from upper floor/hall ways downstairs is now prohibited, including, “the use of naked light such as candle and tampering with door lock.”

UNIBEN management called on the students, particularly hostel occupants to respect the privacy, security and individual rights of fellow students at all time.

“Students are required to pack their belongings, return keys and other University properties at the close of semester/session. Any property left behind will be at the students own risk.

“All students must vacate halls of residence at the appointed date of evacuation released by the University,” the latest guideline sighted by CAMPUS GIST added.

The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin City, in Edo state, has permitted the sale of only UNIBEN bread in its campuses.

This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday widely circulated by the Institution's Spokesperson, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, endorsed by management.

CAMPUS GIST reports that the UNIBEN bread is produced by UNIBEN Bakery, located in the Ugbowo main campus of the University.

According to the statement, by this latest directive, the sale of bread brought from outside the University is hereby banned.

Similarly, the University of Benin management equally prohibited the sale of table water, other than UNIBEN water, in its campuses.

“The Task forces on UNIBEN Bakery and UNIBEN Water are to monitor and enforce the ban,” the statement added.

UNIBEN also directed its security personnel and hostel porters to ensure compliance “as there will be sanctions for flouting the directive.”

Renowned Nigerian philanthropist and the Founder of Alex Ikwechegh Foundation, Chief (Hon) Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, has unveiled plans to grade roads in rural communities of Abia state, Southeast, Nigeria.

Igbere TV reports that the rural roads grading, which is being carried out under the Alex Ikwechegh Foundation, will take place simultaneously across all the three Abia North, Central and South senatorial districts on February 3, 2021.

Chief Alex, Founder of GrossField Group, through his Foundation, has therefore directed rural dwellers to identify roads that needs grading in their communities and reach the Foundation through 08064119000 or 08033023854 for action.

This latest philanthropic gesture from the Abia born Chief Alex Ikwechegh does not come as a surprise to many owing to his numerous projects and programs for humanity, community development outreach and nation building initiatives, across Abia state and Nigeria at large.

Ahead of last year's yuletide season, as it has always been an old tradition for the Alex Ikwechegh Foundation boss, Chief Alex donated several items including bags of rice, cartons of noodles, fuel, kerosene and other palliatives to households and orphanage homes.

Chief (Hon) Alex Ikwechegh, the ‘Nkuma Dike Ndigbo’ and Igbere pride, has through his Alex Ikwechegh Foundation, over the years, donated to the poor and carried out several unprecedented philanthropic gestures across the country.

His distribution of free fuel and kerosene to Abians have become an annual event in the whole of Abia state, including the commercial city of Aba, a gesture which marks the philanthropist's August 25th birthdays.

During the recent coronavirus-imposed lockdown across the country, the founder of GrossField Group and billionaire business mogul embarked on massive distribution of free palliatives to the good people of Abia state.

He also, through his Alex Ikwechegh Foundation, donated cash gifts and other items to widows in Abia and offset the hospital bills of many including a woman whose fingers were allegedly cut off by Fulani herders in the State.

Hon. Ikwechegh had in 2019 donated household items including mattresses, pots, buckets, food items and clothing to victims of police attacks in Ndiegoro, a community in Aba South local government area of Abia.

Also not left out in Alex Ikwechegh's numerous philanthropic acts is the former NEPA cash office in Igbere, which now wears a new look, following its reconstruction by the philanthropist.

In the area of security, because Alex Ikwechegh believes his people must be protected at all times, the Aba-born philanthropist has carried out donation of vehicles to several vigilante groups.

As a lover of education, Hon. Alex Ikwechegh has thousands of students under his Alex Ikwechegh Foundation scholarship scheme, including pupils and students from Abia.

He singlehandedly reconstructed the Igbere Community secondary school in Igbere, Abia State, and has continued to donate millions to uplift the downtrodden and orphans in the society at every given opportunity.

On December 10, 2020, Chief Alex was honoured at the prestigious IgbereTV Leadership Excellence Awards as 'personality of the year' for his contribution to national development. This came weeks after the philanthropist bagged another award by "Project 20:2020", alongside the minister of finance, Dr. Zainab Ahmed; Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state, among several high profile Nigerians, in Abuja.

The Edo state government has announced the full reopening of all schools in the state as the state battles to contain the spread of the second wave of coronavirus.

Although the federal government had earlier given the nod for schools across the country to reopen January 18, following months of coronavirus-imposed lockdown, the Edo government halt the process owing to COVID-19 scare.

However, in a statement made available to CAMPUS GIST Thursday, the state government said all public primary schools in the state are to resume full activities on Monday 1st February 2021.

”Parents are expected to make their children and wards ready for resumption on this date,” the statement added.

Government warned striking teachers in the state to resume academic activities as the state government would withhold salaries of teachers who violate the order.

“The Board wishes to reemphasize that all public school teachers and head teachers are required to be present in their various schools,” he said.

“Failure to resume work would be considered forfeiture of salary as the Edo State Government has activated the No Work, No Pay policy.

“Head Teachers and Teachers who are desirous of staying away from work in support of the sponsored strike action by certain elements of the Edo State Branch of the National Union of Teachers, are required to hand over all school property in their custody to their respective Education Secretaries.

“The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) is collaborating with the relevant security agencies to ensure the protection of all public schools and any willful destruction of government property will be met with criminal prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”

Edo currently ranks number 7 in the COVID-19 chart list with 3,689 active cases as at Wednesday January 27. Nigeria has a total of 126,160 confirmed cases with 1,544 deaths and 100,365 recoveries.

Besides the postponement of its resumption it's plenary sessions from January 26th to February 9th, members of the Nigerian Senate have been involved in other legislative duties which also include committee meetings.

On Wednesday, Igbere TV reports that Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and the Deputy President Senator Ovie-Omo Agege were pictured making their way out of the Senate building shortly after a closed-door meeting held in the latter's office.

Decked in a White native attire with a traditional titled red cap to match, the Chief Whip of the Senate stepped out side-by-side with Senator Omo-Agege who was equally dressed in Maya blue native attire and black cap.

The principal officers of the Red Chambers and from the Southern region of the nation were flanked by their respective aides while they departed the Senate building they also acknowledged greetings from staff and visitors in the Senate building.

Sharing the photos in a post sighted by Igbere TV on his verified Instagram handle, @oukgram, Senator Kalu wrote; "departing the Senate building after yesterday's legislative duty with my brother and fellow distinguished colleague Senator Ovie Omo-Agege."

An Edo Magistrate Court in Oredo Magisterial District has convicted nine persons for violating the state government’s coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols, with the convicts sentenced to community service as punishment for refusing to wear facemasks in public and breaking the 10pm to 5am curfew in the state.

Igbere TV gathered that twelve suspects were arraigned before the mobile court which held its sitting at the Edo State High Court premises, with Chief Magistrate Bright Eraze Oniha presiding.

The suspects arrested and convicted for refusing to wear facemasks include Abu Sani, Umaru Ali, Emmanuella Sylvester, Desmond Victory, Peter Nyashi, Franca Osas, Kashatu Mahmud and Clement Palmer.

They were convicted for violating regulations 8(6)(c) of the Edo State Dangerous Infectious Diseases (Prevention) Regulations 2020 and Section 203 of the criminal code law, Cap 48, Vol. II, law of the defunct Bendel State, 1976, as applicable to Edo State.

Four persons, namely Sylvester Alufokhai, Austin King, Austin Osaro and James Uyi, were arraigned for breaking the state’s curfew directive.

Of the four suspects, Igbere TV reports that Sylvester Alufokhai was convicted for violating the regulation 16 (3) of the Edo State Dangerous Infectious Diseases (Prevention) Regulations (2020).

The Edo State Judiciary constituted Mobile Courts across the state to try violators of the Edo State Dangerous Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020, invoked by Governor Godwin Obaseki to curb the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state.

The Chancellor of Gregory University, Uturu, in Abia state, Prof. Gregory Ibe, has congratulated the newly elected President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor on his victory at Sunday's election in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

In a statement made available to Igbere TV, on Monday, in Umuahia, Prof. Ibe, the 'Enyi Abia', while eulogizing the newly elected Ohaneze president-general, expressed confidence that Obiozor would lead the Association well.

“It is with great elation that I have received the news of your emergence as the new President-General at the recently concluded Ohanaeze elections in Imo State,” he said.

“Indeed, I must offer my joyous congratulations to you, Prof, and to other members of your incoming cabinet, eminent Igbo groups, Ndigbo in general and all those who made this achievement to come to fruition.”

He said with his emergence, the people of Southeast have shown the entire world and all Nigerians that in Obiozor, lies a true leading light that would speak on behalf of the race, stand for justice, equity and progress of the people.

“This victory accorded you today by God through his people has inspired great confidence in Ndigbo to look to the future with assurance that all will be well,” Prof. Ibe added.

“We remain upbeat that your pedigree and distinguished personality will guide the course of our future as a people.”

The Gregory University proprietor, while encouraging Obiozor to “march on”, said the people were standing by him in his quest to provide qualitative leadership to the people and Nigeria at large.

While praying for the newly elected Ohaneze leader, Prof. Ibe added; “My heart’s desire and prayer remains that your determined efforts to reawaken and reposition our people will continue to provide immense outcomes for the benefit of Ndigbo and our country, Nigeria.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state has said it will appeal Saturday's judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on the case it instituted against the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

Igbere TV had earlier reported how the Court, today, dismissed the certificate forgery suit filed against the Edo governor by the APC and a chieftain of the party, Williams Edobor.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed dismissed the suit on the conclusion that the plaintiffs(APC, Edobor) failed to prove their allegations of forgery against Obaseki ‘beyond reasonable doubt.’

In a statement forwarded to Igbere TV, Saturday, endorsed by the APC Caretaker Publicity Secretary in Edo, Mr. Chris Azebamwan, the party said it was appealing the judgement.

He quoted the Chairman of the Party Caretaker Committee in Edo, Col. David Imuse RTD, as saying the APC legal team would immediately move to study the judgement and file an appeal.

Imuse expressed hope that the judiciary will remain upright and always ensure that the will of the people and rule of law prevail.

”We thank God also granting all the lawyers and the judge very good health with which they all contributed to bring the whole litigation process to this interesting stage. It is not the end of the road,” the statement quoted the APC chair as saying.

He said all APC members in Edo state are very hopeful like the good democrats and believers in the rule of law that they are that the Judiciary will continue to show that it is the last hope of the common man.

Meanwhile, Col. Imuse has appealed to all APC members in the state to be calm and to go about their normal activities without animosity as the party appeals the verdict.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on the certificate forgery case brought against him by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Ahmed Mohammed had on Saturday dismissed the case filed by the APC and a chieftain of the party, Williams Edobor, against the governor, Igbere TV reports.

In a statement forwarded to Igbere TV, in reaction to the victory, Obaseki said the judgement is a triumph of the rule of law and a testament to the fact that truth would prevail ultimately no matter how vehemently detractors push lies in the face of incontrovertible evidence.

According to the governor, “The verdict of the Federal High Court, delivered by Honourable Justice Ahmed Mohammed is well-received and a victory for the rule of law. It was a most needless attempt by desperate individuals trying to undo the will of the people through the backdoor but we are happy today that justice and truth have prevailed.”

He noted that the verdict confirms once again that Edo people were well-guided in trusting him to lead them in the September 19th governorship election, promising to continue to prioritise the development of the state not minding the darts thrown by those who are embittered by their loss and continue their attempt to put spanner in the works even when they have been roundly beaten on all fronts.

“My profound gratitude goes to the judiciary who have stood indefatigably for truth and justice; the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR); my party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); our party leaders and members; my teeming supporters; the good people of Edo State and all Nigerians.”

Igbere TV recalls that the APC and its chieftain, William Edobor had filed the suit alleging that Governor Obaseki presented a forged certificate to seek re-election in the Edo State governorship election held on September 19, 2020.

According to the plaintiffs, the said document was purportedly issued by the University of Ibadan, while the governor presented same to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which conducted the poll.

Obaseki, who ran on the Peoples Democratic Party platform in the poll, secured 307,955 votes to beat his rival, Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the APC, who got 223, 619 votes.

Governor Obaseki had defeated Ize-Iyamu as the APC candidate in the 2016 governorship election while the latter was the PDP candidate.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki will today(Saturday), at 12 Noon, knows fate as the Federal High Court in Abuja delivers judgment in a certificate forgery suit filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the Governor.

Igbere TV recalls that Justice Ahmed Mohammed, the judge presiding over the case, had fixed the judgment date for Saturday January 9 after parties to the suit adopted their final arguments on Thursday.

This Online Medium understands that the judge fixed today for the judgment to beat the expiry date of the suit which has 180 days lifespan from the time it was filed in July 2020.

The APC and one of its members, Williams Edobor, who jointly filed the suit, urged the court to disqualify Obaseki as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 19, 2020 poll.

Their prayer is anchored on the grounds that Obaseki allegedly forged his University of Ibadan certificate which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in support of his nomination as a candidate in the governorship election.

What could happen?

Should the court disqualify Obaseki as a candidate in the election which he won to clinch the second term in office, he would be sacked and the party that came second in the election will produce the next governor and deputy.

But interestingly, Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who came second in the contest, is temporarily out of the picture following the disqualification of his running mate, Gani Audu over alleged discrepancies on his credentials.

Meanwhile, Ize-Iyamu has appealed the judgement of the Edo state High Court which nullified the candidacy of his running mate, Gani Audu, from the September 19, 2020 Edo Governorship election.

Igbere TV had reported how the court presided by Justice Hellen Courage-Ogbebo, on Wednesday declared Audu’s candidacy as invalid for giving false information to INEC in the form EC9 affidavit to enable him to contest the election in the state.

The trial judge delivered the judgement in a suit filed by Kadiri Oshoakpemhe against the APC deputy governorship candidate and others.

Ize-Iyamu appealed the judgement on the basis that the trial judge erred in law when he held that the suit between Kadiri Oshoakpemhe (first respondent) against Gani Audu (second respondent) and others was not statute-barred by virtue of the provision of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He, therefore, prayed the court to set aside the judgement of the trial court and dismiss the first respondent for failing to prove his claim rooted in allegation of commission of crime beyond reasonable doubt as required by law.

Implication:

Why the the APC and its candidates await on the Appeal Court to deliver a favourable judgement and return their participation in the contest, and should the Federal High Court in Abuja disqualify Obaseki from the contest today.......

The candidate who came third in the contest would step in as Governor. But Igbere TV observed that the candidate, 36-year-old Iboi Emmanuel, did not meet the Constitutional requirements. To win a governorship election, the candidate needs a majority of the votes and 25% of the votes in at least two-thirds of the local government areas in the state (section 179 of the 1999 Constitution). Emmanuel only managed to poll at least 3,000 votes to come third in the contest.

What then?

According to a legal practitioner, who spoke to Igbere TV Saturday morning, the worse that could happen is for the Speaker of the Edo Assembly to be sworn in as Acting Governor as the Constitution does not permit vacuum in power.

The Speaker, Marcus Onobun, would remain in acting capacity until either Obaseki or Ize-Iyamu wins either of their case if appealed up to the Supreme Court.

If both fail to win, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be left with no other option than to conduct a fresh rerun among the remaining qualified candidates.

But the legal practitioner argued that Ize-Iyamu's case was already at the Court of Appeal therefore the execution of Edo State High Court ruling is statutorily stayed. Moreover, if the Federal High Court, Abuja finds Obaseki wanting today, the Edo governor is likely to approach the Court of Appeal immediately for stay of execution and continue as Edo state governor till the final judgement so the possibility of Ize-Iyamu being sworn in immediately is very slim.

Anxiety, Tension in Edo

Meanwhile, there is a palpable tension in Edo and anxiety among supporters of Obaseki, members of the Peoples Democratic Party, the All Progressives Congress, over today’s judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in the certificate scandal involving the Governor.

It was observed on Friday in Benin, that APC members and the teeming supporters of the governorship candidate of the party during last year’s election, Ize-Iyamu, were expressing optimism that APC would emerge victorious.

Ize-Iyamu’s supporters insisted that Obaseki would not be able to wriggle out of the alleged forgery and perjury suit, brought against him by the APC and one of its members, William Edobor.

“With what we have presented before the court, we are 99 per cent sure of victory,” a supporter of Ize-Iyamu and APC member who spoke on condition of anonymity told Igbere TV.

But most supporters of Obaseki were restless but confident of winning, in view of the good job done by Edo governor’s legal team, even while many supporters of Ize-Iyamu were optimistic that APC would have favourable judgment.

Speaking on Friday night, a PDP member and Obaseki’s supporter who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Everybody is waiting for the judgement.

“Some of us are restless. But we are confident because our legal team did a good job and from my view, they could not prove any case of forgery, so we expect a favourable ruling.”

The parties on Thursday exchanged their written addresses through e-mails, with the presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Muhammed, reserving judging for today.

Meanwhile, ahead of today's judgement, supporters of the APC’s Ize-Iyamu and members of the party on Friday took to Twitter to trend #ObasekiOut, suggesting that the Edo state governor may be sent packing from the Osadebe Avenue, Edo government house, by the court today.

Similarly, supporters of the Edo state governor and members of the Peoples Democratic Party, following the #ObasekiOut Twitter trend, took to the micro-blogging social media platform early Saturday to trend #ObasekiTill2024 to show support for the governor ahead of the 12 noon judgement.

Security beefed up at Court premises

Meanwhile, security at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja has been beefed up to the maximum, ahead of the judgement expected to be delivered from noon, today.

Officials from the Nigerian Police Force, Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Army, including security trucks were spotted all over the court premises.

This is even as top chieftains of the APC including its former National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole; Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Hope Uzodima and Yahaya Bello of Kano, Imo and Kogi State respectively were spotted arriving the court ahead of the judgement.

The Abia State Honourable Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Rt. Hon. Cosmos Ndukwe, has been described as an ‘hypocrite’ over alleged anti-party activities, Igbere TV reports.

This was after Ndukwe, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abia, on Thursday, played host to a former governor of the state and Senate Chief Whip, Dr. Orji Kalu, an All Progressives Congress senator.

The visit is raising eyebrows within the circles of the ruling PDP in Abia, who have given different political meanings to the visit, with rumours rife that the Commissioner may be on his way to the APC, having been seen in gatherings of the party of recent.

Giving more credence to the rumour is the recent defection of heavyweights of the PDP in Abia to the APC amidst rumours that the State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu is warming up to join the ruling party at the national level soon.

Meanwhile in reaction to the visit by Senator Kalu, newly elected Deputy Chairman of Bende local government council, Promise Uzoma Okoro, slammed Ndukwe for claiming the visit of the Abia-North Senator was on condolence ground.

He accused Ndukwe of attending a caucus meeting of the opposition APC in Bende, wondering why same Ndukwe should, in the past, attack the Abia Speaker over a similar "visit" to Orji Kalu.

In an article entitled, ‘Hypocrisy in Action’, circulated widely on social media, Friday, Okoro, a former media aide to Abia Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Engr.) Chinedum Orji, alias IKUKU, wrote;

“IKUKU visited OUK, you were not there but believed social media reports that he asked OUK to come and take over Abia.

“You didn't end in believing but went as far as insulting him in your Facebook wall.

“Yesterday, the same Orji Uzor Kalu visited you and when the photos came out, you are claiming that it was for condolences.

“Who is deceiving who?

“After visiting you, OUK took you to the home of Hon Benjamin Kalu representing Bende Federal Constituency, if it wasn't for politics, why did you also join APC caucus meeting in Bende Local Government last night?

“Many should apologise to Hon. Nnnenna Elendu Ukeje (ADABENDE) who despite all the manipulations against her in 2018 has remained in PDP.

“But see them today, they are afraid that nemesis is about catching up with them, they are defecting to APC.

“No Champion indeed reigns forever,” PUO concluded.

Efforts to obtain comment from the Trade and Investment Commissioner proved abortive. As at press time, all his known phone lines were switched off and SMS sent to his phones were yet to deliver or responded to.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 19 Edo 2020 Governorship election, Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has appealed a High Court ruling nullifying his candidacy alongside the running mate, Gani Audu.

Igbere TV had reported how an Edo State High Court, Wednesday, disqualified both candidates from the tightly-contested guber race which remains subject of litigation over contended discrepancies in the academic credentials of the winner, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

In an appeal against the judgement over alleged infractions contained in the documents submitted to INEC by the Deputy Governorship candidate, Gani Audu, Ize-Iyamu asked the court of appeal to set aside judgment of the trial court delivered in suit No. B/358/2020 on the 6th January 2021.

The appeal, sighted by Igbere TV, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the Edo state high court sitting in Benin City contained in judgment of Honorable Justice Helen A. Courage-Ogbebor.

Among numerous reasons for the appeal is that the suit is statute-barred.

Igbere TV recalls that Ize-Iyamu had earlier described the ruling as “unfortunate and utterly wrong” while asking his supporters to remain calm.
