The adoption of Senator Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe) for Senate President in the incoming ninth national assembly by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is causing ripples within the party, Igbere TV has learnt. This was as a former Senate leader, Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno) lashed out at the party's National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, describing the endorsement as unconstitutional. Igbere TV had previously reported that Oshiomhole, during a meeting President Muhammadu Buhari had with APC Senators-elect Monday night, announced Lawan as the party's choice for the Senate President position. However, multiple sources reliably informed Igbere TV Tuesday afternoon that the party's position has been rejected by majority of the APC Senators-elect. Igbere TV reliably gathered that aside Lawan and Ndume, Senators Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe) and Abdullahi Adamu (APC, Nassarawa) are also interested in the position and have since indicated their interest. While Senator Abdullahi Adamu is being considered to succeed Lawan as the Senate leader, there are reports that Goje enjoys the support of the Saraki group because he appears more acquiescent to the group in its bid to secure the position of Deputy Senate President, acting in concert with the PDP caucus. Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, Ndume argued that Lawan’s choice as Senate President was an unpopular decision. According to him, both President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, gave him their consent when he made his intention to contest the position known. The lawmaker, who expressed shock over the decision, however, said he would consult the leaders of the party in the North East and his colleagues who were supporting his aspiration, before taking a final position on the issue. Ndume said all his colleagues at the meeting were shocked when Adams Oshiomhole unilaterally announced his decision to endorse Lawan as candidate of the party. He said, “All my colleagues at the occasion yesterday (Monday) were shocked when Adams Oshiomhole unilaterally announced his decision to endorse Lawan as candidate of the party. “It is an unpopular decision because I am sure that President Buhari and other leaders of the party are not in support of that action. None of the stakeholders was also consulted.” Also speaking, one of the Senators-elect who did not want to be mentioned confirmed Ndume’s position. He said already, other contenders for the Senate President position have started reaching out to their colleagues in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to lobby their support. He, therefore, advised the party leadership to take precautionary measure “to ensure that the Saraki scenario in 2015 does not repeat itself.” Similarly, an APC Senator from the North East, who apparently supports Ali Ndume’s aspiration, said Oshiomhole did not consult the party before announcing his decision. The lawmaker said he was shocked when Oshiomhole mentioned Lawan as the next Senate President, in the presence of other top contenders and Muhammadu Buhari. He said: “We were all shocked when he (Oshiomhole) told us that Lawan is the next Senate President. He did not allow us to speak before they directed that the National Anthem be recited, which brought the meeting to an end.” There are fears that Ndume, who was supplanted by Lawan as Senate Leader in the eighth Senate, sees this as an opportunity to take his pound of flesh. Ndume believes that Lawan colluded with Saraki to effect his removal as Senate leader without prior notice or complaints. Igbere TV recalls that Ndume had stepped out to pray only for him to return to the chamber to discover that he had been removed and replaced with Lawan. “The 2015 scenario is building up ahead of the inauguration of the ninth assembly. Will the APC and President Buhari allow a repeat of history? It will be farcical if, under his nose and in a back-to-back manner, the President allows the 2015 tragedy to be re-enacted,” an APC Senator, who spoke to Igbere TV on Tuesday, added. The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Rivers, Akpo Bomba Yeah has announced his resignation from the party, Igbere TV can authoritatively report. Igbere TV reports that Mr Yeah equally announced his defection to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, moments after resigning from the AAC. AAC is the party adopted by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi for the governorship election in Rivers state being that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has no candidate for the election. The defection of Mr Yeah is coming few days after rumoured reports that PDP bigwigs in Rivers were making moves to lure him with huge sums of money and other gifts. Though the AAC Deputy Governorship candidate denied the allegation, he, however, maintained his stance to leave the party. In a letter addressed to the Rivers State AAC Governorship Candidate, Biopkomabo Awara, and obtained by Igbere TV on Monday, Yeah said his resignation from the party was informed by alleged hijack of the party’s structure by the All Progressives Congress in the state. While advising Awara to liberate himself from what he described as “Amaechi’s stronghold”, Yeah accused the Minister of Transportation of pursuing a selfish political agenda. “I write to most respectfully to notify of my resignation from the membership of the African Action Alliance (AAC) with effect from today, 25th March 2019 and subsequent defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “Please note also that by this notice, I cease to be the Deputy Governorship Candidate of our Party, the AAC, for the 2019 Governorship Election in Rivers State. “My decisions were informed by the complete hijack of the structure and administration of our Party by a faction of the APC in Rivers State led by the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, for his personal political ambition. “Furthermore, the Rotimi Amaechi led faction of the APC is not letting in its determination to subvert the will of Rivers people and cause crisis in the State using the platform of our promising Party. “In the circumstance, I cannot in all conscience continue to lend support to the selfish political venture of the Minister of Transportation, which does not mean well for the progress and development of the people of Rivers State. “As a budding and promising politician, I also appeal to you to accept the reality of your crushing defeat and liberate yourself from being used by Rotimi Amaechi to cause unnecessary political crisis in our dear State. “Thank you very much and please accept the assurances of my highest regards as always,” Yeah wrote. Next Census will cost over N220bn, says Population Commission The National Population Commission says the next census will cost the nation over N220bn, Igbere TV can authoritatively report. This was disclosed by the commission's Director General, Ghaji Ismail, on Tuesday in Abuja. Igbere TV reports that the DG spoke at the commencement of fieldwork for the continuation of the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD). According to him, the 2015 budget for the proposed 2016 census which eventually did not take place was put at N220bn. He said with currency devaluation and inflation rates, the commission would require much more than N220bn to conduct a census. Ismail said, “How much will it cost? At this point in time it is going to be very difficult because there have been changes. It is not something you can say off hand but if we deduce from our previous submission in 2015 hoping that it would take place in 2016, a lot has changed in terms of currency devaluation but if we are to use the 2015 submission, we are looking at a submission of over N220bn.” He said although the 2019 budget proposal had no provision for a census, a separate budget could be submitted for the exercise. The DG said it was time to begin to speak about it since elections were already coming to an end. He, therefore, pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to take the matter into consideration. “Normally, it (census budget) is done within the wide service vote which is directly under the Presidency and therefore, when the proclamation is made by Mr. President. We are very hopeful because we have briefed him and we are very hopeful that this time around, having put the elections behind us, Mr. President would look at the commission favourably so that we can undertake the net census because, without the consensus, there will be no planning. “We are proud to say Mr President is doing very well in the area of infrastructure in the last three to four years and we are convinced that he will continue to do so but better still, from our perspective, the infrastructure should be provided based on the basis that we know where we are, who we are, where we are mostly located and our various population dynamics,” Ismail added. The DG said the time had come for a law to be introduced which will give the commission the mandate to hold census at regular intervals just as the Independent National Electoral Commission undertakes elections every four years. He said a bill had been submitted to the National Assembly to that effect which had passed the first reading but things slowed down because of the electioneering. Ismail added, “We are conscious of the fact that the absence of a legislation has actually not done us any good because the absence of legislation leaves the decision to conduct census at the liberty or the vagaries of nature which means it is left to time and chance. “We are working hard. In fact, we have conducted two rounds of in-house review for a legal instrument to see that we push it forward. As we speak, we have proposed an amendment of the Act which is before the National Assembly. If I am not mistaken, it has gone through the first reading but elections came up.” http://igberetvnews.com/596847/shocking-see-the-outrageous-amount-next-census-will-cost-nigeria/ Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44, Dominique

A’Ibom 2019: APC Seeks Relocation of Tribunal to Abuja, State Reasons The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State has written to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, to demand the relocation of the election tribunals from the state to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Igbere TV can authoritatively report. This was as the State Chairman of the party, Obong Ini Okopido cited lack of confidence on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the reason for the demand. In a letter obtained by Igbere TV on Thursday, Okopido said there are attempts to perpetuate electoral fraud by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom, Mike Igini in collusion with the State Government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to destroy electoral materials needed to substantiate the election petition of the APC. According to the Chairman, “We observe with deep regrets that since Mr. Mike Igini superintended over the worst general elections ever conducted in Akwa Ibom State, that was fraught with manifest irregularities and wide spread electoral infractions, the REC is now unveiling a grand scheme to thwart and create a chaotic environment to pave way for the pervasion of justice. “We have been reliably informed that the REC is now intimidating electoral officers who participated in the just concluded general elections in the State, particularly, Collation Officers, Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs), Presiding Officers (POs) and Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs), handing over their phone numbers to hired assassins and PDP killer squad to forcefully coerce them to concoct and fabricate false reports of violence, ballot paper snatching, all in a bid to justify the clandestine activities of Mr. Mike Igini days after the purported declaration of results, seeing that unit results will expressly show that candidates of the All Progressives Congress clearly won the elections by the votes directly delivered at the polling units across the state. “This latest action by the leadership of INEC in Akwa Ibom State has vindicated our stand expressed in various foras before the general elections that Mr. Mike Igini is a biased umpire, heavily compromised by the Akwa Ibom State Government to truncate the smooth conduct of a free and fair elections. “We therefore reiterate in unambiguous terms, that INEC under Mr. Mike Igini cannot guarantee credibility and the ethos of fair play as demonstrated with this plot hatched to frustrate the electoral process.” The Akwa Ibom State APC said the immediate relocation of the elections tribunal to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja would forestall breakdown of law and order and reiterated the call for the immediate redeployment of Mike Igini to pave way for a level-playing field for all parties that partook in the elections. The party also called on security agencies to provide adequate security to all ad-hoc staff of INEC in the state and properly investigate and bring to book, thugs allegedly paid by the PDP to intimidate or coerce non-yielding election officials. Igbere TV recall that the APC in Akwa Ibom State had consistently sought the redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Igini over alleged partisanship, an allegation he has denied over time. Similarly, other opposition parties in Akwa Ibom has since opposed the call for Igini’s removal, and subsequently, passed a vote of confidence on him before the conduct of the last general elections in the state. Adamawa Supplementary Elections Postponed Indefinitely - INEC The supplementary election scheduled for Saturday, March 23, in Adamawa State has been postponed indefinitely, Igbere TV can authoritatively report. Findings by Igbere TV showed that this is as a result of a suit filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, by one Mustafa Shaba, the governorship candidate of the Movement for Restoration and Defence for Democracy (MRDD). Igbere TV had previously reported that Shaba sued the commission over the omission of his party's logo on the electoral materials used for the March 9 governorship and State House of Assembly elections in the state. The Resident Electorate Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, Kassiam Gaidam, had initially cited section 87 sub-section 10 of the electoral act, saying, “going by the electoral act, even court orders cannot stop any election at this point. Although we are not aware of any court restraining INEC, however let me tell you that court order(s) will not stop any election.” Igbere TV, however gathered that, on Wednesday, Gaidam made a u-turn, saying that the commission had been served with court order to stop the supplementary election in the state. He added that the court would determine the fate of the supplementary governorship and State House of Assembly elections. “l want to confirm to you that today, indeed a court order was served on the commission's headquarters, and the commission in its usual very good tradition of compliance with court orders has sent appropriate notices, filed counter motions and counter originating sermon. “We would be waiting to hear the outcome or the decision the court will take tomorrow,” Gaidam told newsmen. On Thursday (today), Abdulazeez Waziri, a member of the panel presiding over the case, adjourned the matter till Tuesday next week. Meanwhile, Igbere TV recalls that the PDP was leading in the March 9 governorship election in the state before it was declared inconclusive by the electoral body. Okorocha Selling Imo Govt’s Property — Deputy Gov, PDP Alleges The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has raised the alarm that Governor Rochas Okorocha is selling government properties since after losing election, Igbere TV reports. Similarly, Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, have again raised the alarm that government vehicles and equipment are either being moved to undisclosed places or ordered to be auctioned. While the PDP, through its State Secretary, Nze Ray Emeana, distributed documentary evidence to journalists in Owerri yesterday, the deputy governor released a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Uche Onwuchekwa, which contained the memo earlier issued by the Imo State government announcing the auctioning of vehicles. The statement was made available to Igbere TV on Thursday. According to the document, SGI/S.00500/T.2/212, no fewer than 71 vehicles, including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prado and Toyota Hiace are being auctioned by the Imo State government. Part of the memo reads: “Sales of unserviceable vehicles”, signed by Mrs. Ukaigwe Julia, for the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, read: “I am directed to refer to Government House letter No SGI/S.0011/T.4/X dated 23 November, 2018, on the above subject and inform you that His Excellency, Owelle (Dr.) Rochas Okorocha, has appointment (sic) His Royal Highness, Eze (Dr.) M. U. Osakwe, Nnachi of Amannachi, all as the Auctioneer for the 71 unserviceable vehicles shown on the attached list. “I am further directed to request that you accord him unfettered access to the items as listed. Your necessary cooperation is humbly solicited in this regard, while assuring you the best wishes of the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, please.” Another document dated February 16, 2019, originating from Ochiedike Medical and Dialysis Centre, and obtained by Igbere TV, sought approval for valuation of abandoned vehicles. The memo addressed to the Commissioner for Works reads: “Sequel to the directives and recovery of certain number of abandoned scrap vehicles in our premises, they are merely body carcass without engines, thus, nuisance and eye sore. We hereby, do invite your office to come, inspect and conduct valuation for necessary action. Your response to this urgent matter is appreciated.” The PDP State Secretary however maintained that “although these mails were backdated to suit their illegal design to emasculate the new administration, all actions took place last week”. He warned people against buying any government property “because the Emeka Ihedioha administration will recover all of them”. Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor has accused Governor Rochas Okorocha of surreptitiously moving the generator serving his office to an undisclosed place, without his knowledge. Onwuchekwa described Okorocha’s action as “wicked and intentionally hatched with a motive of rendering the Office of the Deputy Governor ineffective and to administratively stagnate it to the extent of making it incapable of attending to its constitutional roles.” SOURCE: http://igberetvnews.com/596629/shocking-imo-deputy-gov-pdp-reveals-what-okorocha-did-after-losing-election/

9th NASS: Denying S’East Senate Presidency Will Be Greatest Injustice Ever — APC Chieftain Drums Support for Kalu as SP A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia, Austin Meregini, says it will be bad if the South-Easterners are denied the position of Senate President in the incoming 9th National Assembly, Igbere TV reports. Meregini made the assertion while speaking with journalists on Wednesday in Lagos. Igbere TV reports that Meregini was the APC candidate for Umuahia East State Constituency in the last House of Assembly elections. Meregini said that South-East being brought to the mainstream of Nigeria politics will douse tensions and cries of marginalisation. According to him, if the office is zoned to the region, it will bring natural peace and harmonious coexistence in the country and end all Biafra agitations as well as secession quests. “It is natural justice to cede the position to the South-East to douse all complaints about marginalisation by the people of the region. “For the 9th Senate, it is obvious that there is a common consensus and informal agreement among Nigerians that the South-East is properly positioned to produce the Senate President. “And it will be bad if South-Easterners are denied this position. As we have it now, obviously, it is only the South-South and South-East that are left out in the equation. “For the South-South, President Muhammadu Buhari took over from South-South; the South-East has never played or occupied any major role within the power configuration of the country,’’ he said. The APC Chieftain, while speaking further, maintained that no other person is more qualified from the zone than former Governor of Abia, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu. According to him, Kalu though a first term senator in the Senate possesses the requisite leadership and legislative experience to lead the red chamber. He said that Kalu, as a former member of the House of Representatives in 1991 and two-term governor of Abia, had the love of the country at heart and cares so must about the South-Easterners. “It will be natural justice to have a South-Easterner assume this position and it will be no other person than Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, the Abia North Senator-elect for the ninth assembly. “And from all indications without mincing words, no other person is more positioned or more qualified than Chief Orji Uzor Kalu. “So, in terms of leadership and what it takes to project the interest of the country at the Senate, as well as what it takes to represent the south-easterners, Kalu is more qualified and properly positioned to assume this position. “By ceding the Senate Presidency to the South-East, it will go a long way to pacify the region, and give them a sense of belonging in the Nigeria equation,” Meregini added. SHOCKER!!! See The Lagos Restaurant Where Nigerians Are Not Allowed To Eat Investigation has revealed that Nigerians are not allowed to enter or order food at a ‘racist’ restaurant in Lagos, Igbere TV reports. This follows reports and claims made by some Nigerians on social media. Although, social media users claimed that the Chinese restaurant called Shi Shi, only admit Chinese nationals. However, findings by Igbere TV revealed that Nigerians and other ‘Blacks’ are some times allowed patronage, but such persons must be accompanied by a Chinese. The restaurant is located on 21B, Emina Crescent, off Toyin Street, Ikeja, Lagos. All entrance to the restaurant are usually mounted by guards in Army combat camouflage. A Nigerian who had gone to the restaurant narrated his ordeal. “Who are you looking for?” the guard, a Nigerian, asked. When he responded that he wanted to order a Chinese cuisine, the guard said he was not permitted to enter. The guard also quickly escorted him out of the premises, saying he was only following instructions. Igbere TV gathered that the restaurant operates from 11am to 10pm daily. 9th Senate: Tinubu Opposes Wife’s Bid For Deputy President, Back S’East For President The ambition of Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to become the Deputy Senate President in the 9th Assembly may not materialise soon, Igbere TV reports. This was as her husband, Tinubu is said to be opposed to the move, citing “clash of interest.” Igbere TV had previously reported that Mrs Tinubu, during an interactive session with newsmen in her Lagos residence, said she would love to become the Deputy Senate President some day. Igbere TV reports that the lawmaker representing Lagos Central in the upper legislative chamber, said she was certain women can aspire to become anything in life politically. “One thing is this, a woman can aspire to become anything. Somebody asked if I would like to run for governorship, someday, and I replied yes. “We’ve been governor before, when my husband was governor, I also was the first lady of the state, so, this is my third term as a senator. So, who said I cannot aspire to become Senate president? “I don’t want to be Senate President but I have always wanted to become the Deputy Senate President because I have a lot of responsibility that I want to carry out,” Mrs Tinubu said. However, findings by Igbere TV showed that Mr. Tinubu is more interested in Lagos State producing the next Speaker of the House of Representatives, a position Femi Gbajabiamila, the incumbent Majority Leader of the House, is seriously eyeing. A source close to the former governor said it was impossible for Lagos State to produce both the Deputy Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the same dispensation. Igbere TV recalls that Tinubu’s efforts to ensure Gbajabiamila emerges the Speaker of the current 8th Assembly hit a brick wall when the lawmakers, with the support of their colleagues in the Peoples Democratic Party (APC), elected Yakubu Dogara, the incumbent speaker, to lead them. Speaking on the development, an elected member of the House of Representatives who did not want to be named, said Tinubu was leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that what happened in June 2015 when the National Assembly elected their leaders did not repeat itself. “Yes, the desire of Senator Oluremi Tinubu for the Deputy Senate President position is real, given her experience as a ranking female lawmaker, but it is also clashing with the desire of her husband to ensure Lagos State produces the speaker of the House of Representatives. “It is likely that the APC will zone the speakership position to the South-West as they did in 2015, and our preferred candidate is Femi Gbajabiamila, the current Majority Leader. “Asiwaju (Tinubu) is not really keen about his wife becoming the Deputy Senate President as this may jeopardise his desire to have Gbajabiamila occupy the position of speaker.” Another party chieftain also said Tinubu had not discussed the issue of Senator Oluremi’s ambition with them, adding that “it is not feasible”. “He is more interested in Lagos producing the speaker. As it stands, Remi Tinubu’s ambition to become Deputy Senate President is not feasible,” the party chieftain said. Meanwhile, Igbere TV has learnt that the APC national leader is making move to support the South East to produce the next Senate President. It was gathered that Tinubu is already consulting with the party leaders and top presidency officials for that purpose. This comes on the heels of renewed calls for the zoning of the Senate President position to the South East. Igbere TV reports that prominent personalities and interest groups across the six geo-political zones, have been drumming support for the former Governor of Abia, Orji Kalu for the Senate President position. Our source told Igbere TV that the former Lagos governor is likely to support his ally, Senator-elect of Abia North district, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, for the position. Igbere TV recalls that, after the formation of the APC which was facilitated by Tinubu, the party had reportedly zoned the Senate Presidency to the South East but the zone missed the chance due to their inability to produce a Senator under the party. But with the election of 3 APC Senators in the last National Assembly election, the party is said to be taking steps to correct the perceived inbalance in the distribution of key offices in the Buhari-led administration. “Yes, Asiwaju (Tinubu) is likely to support the South East for the nation's number three position. He has been consulting lately. Leaders have reached out to him, at the appropriate time, he will make his interest known,” an insider privy to the move told Igbere TV on Wednesday. This is even as about 98 per cent of these groups and individuals have been drumming support for, and tipping former Governor of Abia State and Senator-elect, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu for the position. Speaking in an interview with newsmen on Sunday, Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, said he supports the call for the Senate President position to be zoned to the South East. He said that Kalu is fully qualified for the position and should be considered by his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). “We have someone that is ranking from the South East. We have Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu. He was a legislator in the Federal House of Representatives during the military regime, it’s counted, because it was a National Assembly, so he has got some ranking. “Therefore, Orji Uzor Kalu is qualified to be the next Senate President,” Ngige said. 9th Assembly: Northern Senators Back Zoning of Senate Presidency to South East By Ogochukwu Isioma Barely three months away from the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly, the battle for the Senate Presidency is gaining momentum by the day, Igbere TV reports. With certificates of return issued to Senators-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, the battle for the nation's number three seat seems to have shifted to the South East as both the returning and new Senators from the zone are making move to grab the Senate plum position. This is even as some Senators and party leaders from other geo-political zones are said to be drumming support for the senate presidency to be zoned to the South East. Impeccable sources told Igbere TV that a section of the Northern political establishment, including Senators from the three Northern zones — North East, North West and North Central, are solidly supporting the rotation of the Senate Presidency to the South East, and have, in fact, started reaching out to political leaders in the South-South and South-West for that purpose. A source privy to the move, revealed that most of the Senators and leaders are rallying support for former governor of Abia, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu to clinch the Senate President position. Igbere TV reliably gathered that it was on the basis of the understanding that the Senate Presidency position might be ceeded to the South-East that some Northern Senators, including Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano) have been gunning for the position of Deputy Senate President. With 65 APC Senators, PDP 37 and YPP 1, so far declared, the ruling party, APC is sure of clinching to the number three position in the country. Although, there has been some insinuations that Dr. Kalu cannot preside over the 9th Senate as ‘first timer’. However, the ranking rules confer on former House members same privileges as former senators. Kalu, by virtue of his election on the platform of the now defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) into the 593-member House of Representatives in the July 4, 1992 National Assembly to herald the aborted Third Republic, is considered a ranking senator. He served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1992 to 1993 and held two key positions of Deputy Chairman of the Finance and Internal Affairs Committees. It is on record that Dr. Kalu moved the famous Dual-Citizenship Rights Bill in the House, which was later signed into law. Similarly, the South East leaders have dismissed the notion that Dr. Kalu cannot be in the senate leadership as ‘first timer’, citing a precedent. They recall that former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, was a first timer in the Senate when in June 2015, he assumed the position of the PDP Senate Minority Leader. “Kalu is qualified for the job. He is not a first timer; he was a legislator in the aborted third republic so he is a ranking National Assembly member,” an APC chieftain from the South East told Igbere TV. While endorsing the former governor for Senate President, Senator Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment had said; “We have someone that is ranking now (from the South East). We have Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu. He was a legislator in the Federal House of Representatives during the military regime, it’s counted, because it was a National Assembly, so he has got some ranking. Therefore, Orji Uzor Kalu is qualified to be the next Senate President.” Meanwhile, former governors who are ranking senators in the incoming 9th Session of the National Assembly have resolved to ensure that one of them emerges the next Senate President, Igbere TV reports. The ex-governors, it was gathered, are reaching out to the Presidency and the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) to make case for the South East in the zoning arrangements of APC. To actualise this, Senators and political party leaders cutting across the three visible parties in the zone — APC, PDP and APGA are rallying round former governor of Abia, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu who has just been elected to represent Abia North in the upper legislative chamber. It was also learnt that it was on the strength of the promise of the Senate Presidency to the South East that, during the presidential election, South East governors, sensing that President Buhari was headed for victory, agreed to work for the APC in their states to enable the President score 25 per cent votes to achieve an outright victory and avoid second ballot with Atiku Abubakar of the PDP. It is on record that Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi, had openly declared support for President Muhammadu Buhari, during the 2019 presidential election. “I have always said that APC is one man and that’s the president. The president is a man with good character and that’s why we are supporting him and he is supporting Ebonyi state,” Umahi said. Umahi, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor, while addressing state house correspondents after a meeting with Buhari, also said he would wish to go for a second term. “Any first term governor would want to go for a second term. And if that's what you wish yourself, you should be honest enough to wish another person the same,” he said. “Since Mr President is doing his first term and I am doing my first term, it’s my wish to re-contest and I will as well wish the president the same to re-contest.” While reacting to the allegation that PDP governors in the zone negotiated with the APC and top echelon of the presidency in the heat of the election for 25 per cent votes for Buhari, Umahi said, “Why do we need to negotiate for the sex of a child when the child has been given birth to?. Ebonyi state is very dear in the heart of the president. If APC will get a vote in Ebonyi state, it will get vote by the President alone and nobody else.” This was even as Umahi promised to mobilize at least 2,000 PDP members to receive President Muhammadu Buhari at the stadium for the APC presidential rally in Ebonyi, a promise he actually fulfilled on the D-day. Igbere TV reports that hundreds of progressive Nigerians both home and abroad, and interest groups across various ethnic groups, have called for the zoning of Senate Presidency to the South East. This is even as about 98 per cent of these groups and individuals are drumming support for, and tipping Dr. Kalu for the position. Speaking in an interview with newsmen on Sunday, Ngige, a former governor of Anambra State, said he supports the call for the Senate President position to be zoned to the South East.
