By Ogochukwu Isioma The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has formally endorsed Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, the Senator-elect for Abia North Senatorial district, for the position of Deputy Senate President of the incoming 9th National Assembly. Igbere TV reports that the endorsement took place at Camp Neya, the country home of Kalu in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of the state. Igbere TV correspondent at the venue reports that the party also endorsed Nkiruka Onyejeocha, member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, to contest the position of speaker. The endorsement followed a motion moved at the meeting by Senator Chris Adighije, the Abia APC caucus leader. He described the candidacy of Kalu and Onyejeocha as a collective project for all the party faithful, saying that everybody had a role to play toward its realisation. Adighije, who represented Abia Central from 2003-2007, promised to reach out to his friends in the Senate and House of Representatives to solicit their votes for the candidates. He described the meeting, the first of its kind after the general elections, as imperative to enable the party to do a postmortem of the party’s performance at the polls in Abia. “There is need for a postmortem to enable us to examine the reasons why we lost the governorship election after putting all our efforts,” he said. Adighije admonished the State Chairman of the party, Chief Donatus Nwankpa to stand more firmly and resolute in his actions. He said that as the Chairman of the party, his position at any point in time also represented the position of the party. On his part, the party’s Chairman in the state, Chief Donatus Nwankpa said the move was necessary to give the South-East geopolitical zone a sense of belonging in the National Assembly. “Our party worked so hard during the last election to get votes for our candidates to win the election. “Now that we have ranking members in the Senate and House of Representatives, we are asking the party’s national leadership to consider our representatives for leadership positions in the National Assembly in the interest of equity and justice.” Igbere TV correspondent reports that other dignitaries at the meeting include the party’s Deputy Governorship candidate, Chief Martins Azubuike, House of Rep candidate for Aba North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Mascot Uzor Kalu and Rep member elect, Barr. Benjamin Kalu. While Benjamin Kalu spoke on the need for all hands to be on deck to ensure that Orji Kalu and Onyejeocha got elected as principal officers of NASS, Azubuike specifically charged party chieftains to begin to project the two candidates in good light through the media and avoid the “pull-him-down” syndrome. Speaking in an interview with journalists at the end of the meeting, the former governor said that his greatest challenge in realising his ambition was the zoning of the principal offices by the APC national leadership. “My major challenge is zoning of the offices by the party leadership. “This is why we are appealing to the leadership to have a rethink and consider the interest of Ndigbo for equity and fairness to prevail,” he said. Dr. Kalu further said that conceding some positions to Ndigbo would give the people a big sense of belonging and obliterate the feeling of marginalisation. On her part, Onyejeocha admonished party members to join the struggle for Ndigbo to produce the next Nigeria’s president in 2023. “We need to produce the next president of Nigeria so that our fortunes will change,” she said. Our correspondent reports that Onyejeocha, who would be making her fourth term in NASS, seized the opportunity to formally announce her ambition to run for the Speakership of the House. “I am still in the race and hope to finish well,” she added. Empowerment: Kalu Launches Free Agric Program, Gives Out 450,000 Palm Seedlings (Photos) By Ogochukwu Isioma Former governor of Abia State and Senator-elect (Abia North), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu on Sunday launched a free Agricultural empowerment program which saw the distribution of free palm seedlings to members of his constituency and Abians at large. Igbere TV reports that the event which held at Kalu’s Camp Neya private residence in Igbere, attracted dignitaries and personalities from all walks of life including APC House of Reps candidate for Aba North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Mascot Uzor Kalu and Rep members elect, Hon. Nkiruka Onyenjeocha and Barr. Benjamin Kalu. Speaking at the launch of the program, Dr. Kalu said the initiative was his own support to President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy to revolutionise agriculture in Nigeria. He revealed that his foundation, the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation, has purchased 450,000 palm seedlings for distribution to farmers in the state. The Billionaire businessman said the initiative was geared towards encouraging Abia farmers to go into palm plantation and other cash crops in order to create wealth. “This is a sure way of creating wealth among the people of Abia. It is better than sharing money to them,” he said. Kalu said that the seedlings would be given to those with proof of ownership of family land for the palm plantation. The former governor said that the foundation would soon embark on the verification of land submitted by prospective beneficiaries to confirm their claims ahead of the state-wide distribution of the seedlings. Kalu, who doubles as Leader of the APC in Abia, added that the distribution would cut across party line, describing the gesture as non-partisan. “The period of electioneering is over. Now is the time to give the dividend of democracy to our people, irrespective of their party affiliations. “When the foundation distributed vehicles under its youth empowerment scheme, it cut across part line. It was non-partisan. “The only criterion for qualification is proof of ownership of family land,” he said, adding that the size of the family land would determine the quantity of seedling to be given to people. “If you have 100 hectares of land, you will get the quantity for that size. If you have 10 hectares, you will also be given the quantity for the size of the land,” Kalu said. The Senator-elect, therefore, urged the recipients to utilise the opportunity to create wealth and become self-reliant. He recalled that he distributed free palm seedlings to secondary school children during his administration, saying that the beneficiaries were now reaping the benefits. He said that the dependence on importation of palm from Thailand and Malaysia would drastically reduce, by the time people would begin to harvest the fruits of the palm. Kalu said that it would take between two and three years for the palm to mature for harvesting. High point of the event was the symbolic handing over of some seedlings to a few beneficiaries from the three Senatorial districts of Abia North, South and Central. Igbere TV recalls that Kalu had during his Senatorial campaigns, unveiled his over 5,000 hectares fertile farmland at Ugwueke, Bende Local Government area of Abia State. The farm, which is one of the largest farm settlement in Nigeria, is targeted at employing over 20,000 workers that will boost urban and rural development in the state. According to Kalu, the farm which he started in 1998, has about 2,500 hectares dedicated to Cassava farming, adding, “our last harvest crashed the price from N1800 to N850 per-ton. Our 2017 oil palm is also ready for harvest & we have planted more.” Source: http://igberetvnews.com/620825/empowerment-orji-kalu-launches-free-agric-program-gives-out-450000-palm-seedlings-photos/ Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44, OAM4J

Former governor of Abia State and Senator-elect (Abia North), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has denied saying that serving ministers made his party, the All Progressives Congress lose in the South East in the just concluded 2019 general elections. The business mogul therefore called on the general public to disregard the “news” currently making rounds in the media, particularly new media. He was reacting to a report by an online platform (not IGBERE TV) quoting him as saying that he had it on good authority that some party chieftains in the zone sabotaged genuine efforts of the party by aligning with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The online platform had alleged that the former governor made the statement on Saturday in Enugu during the zonal stakeholders’ meeting of the party. Reacting further, the Abia North Senator-elect said that the report is false, adding that he never at any point made the statement. “The general public should disregard the news emanating from the online platform. I never at any point stated that serving ministers made the APC lose elections in the Southeast. The statement is false in its entirety.” He, therefore, called on the management of the platform to review the report, while calling on media outlets to be accurate in news reportage. “The press should live up to its responsibility of accurate reportage. The management of the online platform are advised to review the post (news) immediately,” Kalu added. Amnesty International (AI) has cautioned Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu against giving approval for the execution of prisoners on death row. The group in a statement also asked the governor to take immediate steps to revoke such approval in case he has already authorised one. The International agency insisted that death penalty in any form or shape, and regardless of the nature of crime committed, has no place in the 21st Century. The statement made available to Igbere TV on Friday, was issued by AI Director, Osai Ojigho. The agency while expressing concern over possible resumption of executions in Nigeria, said it was alarmed by March 27, 2019 report quoting Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adekola Olawoye, to the effect that the state governor would soon commence the signing of execution warrants. “Since the declaration was made, Amnesty International has received a report that the Ondo State Governor may have signed executions warrant. “Governor Rotimi Akeredolu must recognise that the death penalty is a cruel punishment that has no place in the 21st century and we ask him to respect the right to life,” Ojigho said. The AI Director added, “No matter what the crime is, who the prisoner is, or the method of execution used, nothing can justify the deliberate taking of human life by the government. “There is no convincing evidence that the death penalty deters crime better than imprisonment, therefore the death penalty is an ineffective punishment. The possible resumption of execution in Nigeria will constitute a setback for the country and it should be avoided, particularly as the world is moving away from the use of the death penalty.” He further noted that the last time Nigeria carried out an execution was in December 2016 when three men were executed in Benin City prison. Igbere TV gathered that over 2,000 death row prisoners are currently in detention facilities across the country. Those whose rights of appeal have been exhausted risk execution and could be executed as soon as the state governor authorises their death warrants. Findings by Igbere TV revealed that since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999 most state governors have not signed executions warrants. Igbere TV reports that the meeting which began moments ago is holding at Hilton Hotels and Resorts, in Johannesburg. Also at the meeting is wife of the former governor, Mrs Ifunanya Kalu. Igbere TV correspondent at the venue reports that both leaders also had breakfast together. Although details of the meeting have not been disclosed yet, the discussions may not be unconnected with the recent unrest in the country and the most recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. The meeting comes a day after the former governor held a separate meeting with former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki in Johannesburg. The meeting ended with the Senator-elect disclosing that issues affecting both countries, were deliberated on. “I had a fruitful meeting with the former President of South Africa, Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki in Johnesburg joined by my wife, Mrs Ifunanya Kalu. As leaders we both deliberated on pertinent issues especially ending civil unrests by promoting unity amongst all Africans,” Kalu told Igbere TV on Tuesday. Igbere TV recalls that Kalu and his wife, Ifunanya, have been in South Africa since Thursday on a business trip. They were on Monday night hosted to a dinner by His Excellency, Sir Chief Dr Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom. Similarly, popular Nigerian pastor and president/founder of Believers Loveworld aka Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilomen on Sunday played host to the former governor in a special church service organized in his South African church, as part of activities to mark his (Kalu) 59th birthday. By Andrews Michael, Benin City Five members of the University of Benin Students’ Union Government have been suspended from office indefinitely over alleged “gross misconduct” and “negligence”, CAMPUS GIST reports. Their suspension came on Saturday, April 20 at the first sitting of the Parliamentary arm since their inauguration in August, 2018. Those suspended include the President, Idehen Charles; Vice President, Chikamso Glory; Secretary General, Francis Ihejirika; Director of Welfare, Ikponmwen Godspower; and Director of Finance, Iyobosa Oviawe. According to our correspondent who observed the sitting, the President was suspended for allegedly signing an “agreement” with the school authority to impose a N3,000 levy on the students, while the Vice President was suspended for allegedly sourcing funds amounting to over a million naira in the name of the union ‘without the consent or approval of the Parliament.’ The Director of Welfare was suspended for “neglecting his duties” by allowing grasses to take over the school environment, and not attending to light issues on campus. The Director of Finance on the other hand, was suspended for charging students N1,000 to participate in his “Free Scholarship Programme”, while the Secretary General was suspended for leaving the Students’ Union Secretariat dirty. The suspended members of executive are to return all union properties in their possession and vacate their offices until the committee set up to investigate their alleged crimes conclude their investigation. FIRST SITTING The sitting was scheduled to begin at 10am immediately after the procession which was to kick off at the main auditorium, continue at Ekehuan campus and completed at Ugbowo campus. Although many parliamentarians were observed to be present, they, however, had logistics problem as principal officers were seen making efforts to provide procession gowns for those who did not have one. They departed for Ekehuan campus and returned to Ugbowo at about 1pm. Our correspondent at the venue reports that the sitting started at exactly 2pm. The sitting began with the adoption of the agenda which included ratification of the judicial arm, ratification of the committees, state of the union, amongst others. DRAMA AT PLENARY The ratification of the judicial arm took quite a dramatic turn as some students presented to the House by the Attorney General, Orumen Ifidon on the recommendation of Law Students Association (LAWSA) to constitute the judiciary failed to meet certain criteria; one of which is that every faculty must have at least one member present in the judicial arm of the SUG. The House proceeded on recess after the Speaker, Rt. (Hon) Philip Manasseh ran through the committee lists containing names of members of parliament, their faculties and portfolios. This followed the adoption of the standing order by the House. Our correspondent reports that another drama occurred during recess just outside the venue as some men who claimed to be members of the military attacked some members of parliament. This was followed by reactions and counter reactions from parliamentarians, security personnels and a few “notable individuals” present. RESUMPTION OF SITTING The sitting resumed with the President, Idehen Charles reading the State of the Union. At this point, tension was already in the air as the sitting had been threatened to be put on hold due to interference from external forces. The State of the Union was, however, read by the President and the floor opened for questions and observations. N3,000 SAGA Concerning a certain N3,000 levied on all students by the school management which the President mentioned in his State of the Union, members of the parliament including Hon. Divine A., reacted saying there were rumours that some members of the executive gave consent before the implementation of the said levy. Hon. Edwards from the faculty of Law, demanded to know which of the executive members were present at the meeting and what the terms of discussion were. Every member of the Executive Council except the Secretary General and Director of Socials were said to be present at the “meeting” with the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Ikponmwonsa Omoruyi. ALLEGATIONS AND REACTIONS Reactions from other members of parliament also trailed the State of the Union which was read by the President. Some of which include why the President, Vice President and Financial Secretary were already organizing programmes without the approval of the parliament. Allegations were also made that the VP had, using the name of the Union, collected monies from external sources to the tunes of millions. A source close to the VP disclosed that among those visited by Glory (VP) in her quest for “free donations” included the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole. The Director of Finance was quizzed for collecting N1,000 from students as registration fee to partake in a ‘scholarship scheme’ he is organizing in partnership with some banks on campus. CAMPUS GIST reliably gathered that some members of parliament were angered by the move accusing him of extorting students despite having gotten an approval of N700,000 from the school authority for the said programme. MORE DRAMAS, SUSPENSION Just during the heat of the debate and while some members of parliament were already pushing for the suspension of the executives, another parliamentarian, Hon. Godstime Oghogho from Medicine, seized the moment to raise another motion which is an anomaly that some members of the executive are incompetent. At this juncture, rowdiness greeted the session as tension increased due to the presence of some external forces, even as there were already two motions pending before the House. Hon. Oghogho hence pushed for the suspension of the union members, which was seconded by another parliamentarian. This however did not go down well, as the motion was met with strong resistance by few members of the House. The five members were, however, subsequently suspended. CAMPUS GIST learnt that scuffle broke out immediately following the suspension of the five student leaders as the external forces at the scene, who were against the action and decision, moved to attack parliamentarians. Our correspondent reports that the Speaker had to quickly call for a motion for adjournment of plenary. Immediately, members of the parliament scampared for safety as troubles loomed due to the fact that the actions taken were against the wishes of some individuals, including some parliamentarians. People were seen running in all directions to protect themselves while the parliamentarian who raised the motion, Oghogho had to be whisked away for his own safety. REACTIONS AND CONSTITUTIONAL CONCERNS Reacting to the development, a member of parliament who did not want his name mentioned, argued that the suspension of the student leaders was unconstitutional and a gross violation of their rights as enshrined in section 36(1) of the 1999 constitution (as amended) which the Students’ Union constitution is subject to by virtue of section 3(1) of the SUG constitution. Section 36(1) of the 1999 constitution provides that, “In the determination of his/her rights and obligations, including any question or determination by or against any government or authority, a person shall be entitled to a fair hearing within a reasonable time...”. “But this cannot be said of the issue in contest as the executive members were suspended without giving them an opportunity to respond to the allegations and charges preferred against them,” he opined. Speaking further, the parliamentarian added that “the Parliament before suspending them ought to have heard their own part of the story. Allegation no matter how grave can never ground conviction – this is the position of the law”. “What transpired at the inaugural plenary was ‘witch-hunting’ as no member of the executive was given room to speak even though they were raising their hands as a sign of indication”. Another member of parliament, who took to the parliament’s official WhatsApp group page, wrote; “For me, I don't think Sec Gen deserves to be suspended simply because the SUG secretariat was dirty, besides no money has been allocated to him yet to pay the cleaners but we were so fast to act without asking him questions. Also, the Sec Gen isn't among those who went for the N3,000 meeting with the DVC. “Are you guys even aware that he (Sec Gen) has been using his personal money to pay the cleaners since after the University terminated their contract with the cleaners?. He couldn't continue paying them because he wasn't allocated any money yet but we all just attacked him without questioning... “For me I think I’m disappointed in this House (parliament) for failing to ask him questions before passing judgment. Well, the deed is done already, the committee should carry out their own investigations.” Efforts to obtain comments from the suspended executive members proved abortive. Though the Secretary General (suspended) promised to get back to our correspondent, he was, however, yet to do so as at press time. Michael is CAMPUS GIST UNIBEN Correspondent. Copyright CAMPUS GIST. UNIBEN Pharmacy Students Protest Industrial Action By Lecturers ... Shut down main gate By James A. Mary Students from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin on Tuesday took to the street to register their grievances over the industrial action embarked upon by academic staff in the faculty, CAMPUS GIST reports. The protest comes less than 72 hours to the April 26th induction ceremony of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the institution. CAMPUS GIST learnt that the decision of the lecturers to embark on strike is due to non-payment of their earned professional allowances by management of the institution. Our correspondent reports that other health professionals in the school have been paid the said allowance, while that of Pharmacy lecturers have remained pending. CAMPUS GIST gathered that academic activities in the faculty has been put on hold since the strike started, and till date, not much has been done by the management of the university towards ending the industrial action. The students have, however, resolved to peaceful protests around the university to express their grievances, and have requested that the strike be called off. They have also demanded that the lost academic days be added to the current calendar at the resumption of lectures. Speaking with CAMPUS GIST, one of the students who did not want his name mentioned, said; “We are here to demand an end to this nonsense (sic). We will not stop until academic activities resumes fully in the faculty. We cannot afford to fold our hands and watch things go wrong.” Another student who identified herself simply as Mercy, said; “We are tired of UNIBEN, we have not had lectures since the resumption of academic activities. We cannot come and spend eight years on a six year course naah! (sic).” CAMPUS GIST recalls that the faculty had on the 2nd of July, 2018 embarked on a warning strike to drive home their demands over non-payment of their earned allowances. The protest was, however, suspended after six weeks following an “agreement” between the striking lecturers and management of the university. Efforts to reach the Spokesman of the institution, Osasuyi Michael for comments proved abortive. A staff in the Public Relations Office promised to get back to us, he was, however, yet to do so as at press time. Mary is CAMPUS GIST’s UNIBEN Correspondent. Copyright CAMPUS GIST. A 37-year-old Nigerian woman has been arrested at the Hong Kong International Airport for being in possession of Cocaine, Igbere TV has learnt. Igbere TV gathered that the woman hid the drug weighing more than half of a kilogram in her body. She arrived the city on a flight from Lagos via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was said to be acting suspiciously shortly after her arrival on Thursday, prompting Customs officers at the airport to detain her. Igbere TV gathered that the woman was taken to the hospital for a check-up where she was confirmed to have “foreign objects” in her body. Officers first recovered 215 grams of cocaine contained in condoms and plastic bags found in her vagina. She later discharged 24 capsules of cocaine, each weighing 14 grams, from her body. The drug, weighing 550 grams in total, was estimated to be worth HK$522,000 (US$66,900). The authorities said the woman, who was detained for inquiries, may discharge more drugs. Two black snakes have been found in the office of Liberia's President, George Weah. Igbere TV learnt that the development has forced the former African best footballer to work from his private residence since Wednesday. Liberia's Press Secretary, Smith Toby, said the two snakes were found in the Foreign Affairs Ministry building, housing Weah’s presidential office. Igbere TV recalls that the office of the president has been based in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since a fire in 2006 gutted the official presidential mansion. All staff have been advised to stay away from work until April 22. “It’s just to make sure that crawling and creeping things get fumigated from the building,” Tobi said while justifying the reasons for the notice. Igbere TV gathered that workers in the Ministry tried to kill the snakes but never succeeded. “The snakes were never killed,” Toby said. “There was a little hole somewhere through which they made their way back.” Igbere TV recalls that a similar incident happened in Nigeria when President Muhammadu Buhari left the country for about three months on “medical ground.” Following the three months period of disuse, ‘rodents’ caused a lot of damage to the furnitures and interiors in his office, making it impossible for him to operate from the office for months. He reportedly worked from his official residence while the office was being refurbished. SOURCE: http://igberetvnews.com/615155/breaking-snakes-chase-president-away-from-office/

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Sunday said there are no plans to arrest outgoing governors of Imo, Ogun and Zamfara states over alleged financial misconduct. This was in response to a media report that the commission was planning to arrest and detain three governors immediately they lose their immunity on May 29. Igbere TV recalls that a national daily had reported that the EFCC was raising a team to grill three outgoing governors at the end of their tenure. The newspaper listed Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and Abulaziz Yari (Zamfara) as the state governors. It claimed that ahead of May 29, 2019 handover date to newly elected governors of these states, the commission has set up teams to probe the governors who have been accused of perpetuating acts of corruption. Reacting, however, the EFCC in a statement made available to Igbere TV by its Acting Spokesman, Tony Orilade, said the report is not true. The commission said it does not go after anybody, including ex-governors on speculative grounds. The EFCC, therefore, called on the media to be circumspect and verify their stories before going to press. “It is instructive to note that the report did not give the composition and terms of reference of the purported teams set up by the EFCC. “The report is a figment of the imagination of the reporter as everything about the setting of the teams ended with the first paragraph without details of such teams being set up. “Again, the story is not true, as the EFCC does not go after anybody, including ex-governors on speculative grounds. “For the avoidance of doubt, the commission only acts after the investigators have done a thorough job on any individual or firm involved in corruption related cases,” the statement read. A group, Igbo Youth Parliament has called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Presidency to stop marginalizing the people of the South-East region for sake of equity and progress, Igbere TV reports. The group also frowned at events and utterances surrounding the pre-election of principal officers of the incoming ninth National Assembly. In a statement issued at the end of an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Saturday, the group particularly criticized the “winner-takes-all” mentality of the APC, saying the 95/5 percent rule must stop forthwith. The statement made available to Igbere TV, was signed by its National President, Comrade Eke Okogbue and Patron, Prince Xavier Ikechi. “There is the need to maintain balance and give every Nigerian a sense of belonging, especially given the marginalisation the Igbo Nation has suffered in the country.” While reminding the party that every segment of the country has qualified individuals for national service, the group expressed its support to the aspiration of Chief (Dr.) Orji Uzor Kalu as one of the next presiding officers of the Senate. The choice of Dr. Kalu, the Youth Parliament noted, is due to his versatility, sagacity and detribalized personality. “The Senator-elect for Abia North successfully delivered APC in his constituency," querying what extra qualifications were necessary that he does not possess. “For now and except convinced otherwise, the cap fits Orji Uzor Kalu and we so recommend him and will support all his efforts pursuant to becoming Senate President,” the statement read. The group, in the statement, also threatened to initiate the recall of any legislator from the South-East that does not represent its constituents creditably. Innoson Nigeria Limited, manufacturers of Innoson motors, has moved to ‘take over’ Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) following a Supreme Court judgement over the bank’s N8.7 billion indebtedness to the company. This was disclosed in a statement issued by Cornel Osigwe, Head of Corporate Communications of Innoson Motors. The statement which was posted on the company's official social media pages, was obtained by Igbere TV Friday afternoon. Osigwe disclosed that the company had obtained a writ of FiFa from a Federal High Court in Anambra against GTB to effect the judgment earlier given by a Federal High Court in Ibadan and upheld by the Supreme Court. A writ of FiFa is a leave of court to execute a judgment obtained by a creditor in a legal action for debt or damages by levying same on the property of the debtor. What this means is that Innoson has obtained the legal right to seize and take over any property belonging to GTB they find sufficient to defray the sum owed the company. Igbere TV recalls that in 2014, a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan had ordered GTB to pay N2.4bn to Innoson with 22 percent interest per annum. However, Igbere TV gathered that GTB appealed the decision at both the Appeal and Supreme Courts, instead of obeying the orders. According to Innosson’s statement, the Supreme Court on February 27, 2019, dismissed the bank's appeal and upheld the decision of both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. The Judgment debt of N2.4bn, Igbere TV gathered, has an accrued interest of about N6,717,909,849.96 as at today - which results to about N8.8bn in total. Full Statement, “The Chairman of Innoson Group, Chief Dr Innocent Chukwuma, OFR has through a Writ of FiFa taken over Guaranty Trust Bank PLC for and on behalf of Innoson Nigeria Ltd as a result of the Bank’s indebtedness to Innoson Nigeria Ltd. “In a landmark decision on February 27th 2019, the Supreme Court of Nigeria dismissed GTB’s appeal - SC. 694/2014- against the judgment of Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division. “The Court of Appeal, Ibadan division had in its decision of 6th February 2014 dismissed GTB’s appeal against the Federal High Court, Ibadan Division. Thus, the Court of Appeal affirmed the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan Division which ordered GTB by way of Garnishee order absolute – to pay N2.4 Billion to Innoson with a 22% interest, per annum, on the judgment sum until the final liquidation of the judgment debt. “Rather than obey the judgment of the Court of Appeal, GTB approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Court of Appeal's decision. “However in an ruling delivered by Honourable Olabode Rhodes-Vivour JSC on Wednesday, February 27th2019, the Lord Justices of the Supreme Court (JSC) dismissed GTB’s appeal and thus affirmed the concurrent judgment of both the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, Ibadan Division which ordered GTB by way of Garnishee order absolute – to pay N2.4 Billion to Innoson with a 22% interest, per annum, on the judgment until the final liquidation of the judgment. The Judgment debt of N2.4B has an accrued interest as at today of about N6,717,909,849.96 which results to about N8.8 Billion. “Based on the Supreme Court's decision of 27th February 2019 the counsel to Innoson, Prof McCarthy Mbadugha ESQ, had approached the Federal High Court, Awka Division for leave to enforce the judgment having obtained Certificates of Judgment from the Ibadan Division of the Federal High Court. “Having obtained the requisite leave, the Federal High Court issued the necessary process for levying execution - the Writ of Fifa.” SOURCE: http://igberetvnews.com/602037/breaking-innoson-takes-over-gtbank-as-supreme-court-dismisses-appeal/ Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44, Dominique

Wow!!! Good news! Lalasticlala FP material |
Former Governor of Abia and Senator-elect, Abia North Senatorial district, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu says it will be great injustice if the South-East is edged out of distribution of positions in the incoming 9th assembly. He was reacting to the adoption of Senator Ahmad Lawal (APC, Yobe) for Senate Presidency by the ruling All Progressives Congress, and the alleged ceding of the Deputy Senate President position to the North-West. Speaking with newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday, Dr Kalu said it will be unfair not to give the position of Deputy Senate President to the South-East since the party has decided to zone the Senate President position to the North-East. He said it was only fair that the position was retained in the South-East, stressing that both President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, were well aware of this. The former governor noted that he was aware the APC had zoned the Senate President position to the North-East and Deputy Senate President to North-West, but, however, called on the party to have a rethink and cede the Deputy Senate President to the South-East in the interest of equity and justice. While signifying his interest to contest for the position of Deputy Senate President, he, however, warned that he would be forced to go for the Senate President position (on the floor of the house) if the APC fails to zone the Deputy Senate President seat to the South-East zone. Kalu further maintained that he was qualified for the position having been a former member of the Federal House of Representatives from 1991 to 1993 and also a two-time governor. The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, Wednesday granted permission to the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to serve his election petition through a substituted service to President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC). It also said the service would, therefore, be done through the APC national secretariat located at Plot 44, Blantyre street, Wuse II, Abuja. Presiding Judge of the Appeal Court, Justice Abdul Aboki, who granted the leave, said that the process would be deemed as properly served on Buhari. Igbere TV gathered that this development came as a result of complain by Atiku’s lead counsel, Chris Uche (SAN), that it has been difficult to serve Buhari due to his large entourage of aides at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. It will be recalled that Atiku, through a legal petition, had challenged the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, saying Buhari was the winner of the rescheduled February 23, presidential election. The hearing of the petition, Igbere TV reports, started Wednesday (today). The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has finally reacted to a statement credited to Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno), threatening to challenge the party's decision over its choice of Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe) as Senate President in the incoming ninth assembly, Igbere TV can report. Igbere TV had previously reported that Oshiomhole, during a meeting President Muhammadu Buhari had with APC Senators-elect Monday night, announced Lawan as the party's choice for the Senate President position. Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, Ndume said the position of the party on who emerges the Senate President cannot stand as it did not follow due process. According to him, both President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, gave him their consent when he made his intention to contest the position known. The lawmaker, who expressed shock over the decision, however, said he would consult the leaders of the party in the North East and his colleagues who were supporting his aspiration, before taking a final position on the issue. Reacting, however, the APC said it would invoke disciplinary measures on any of its members found opposing or working against the decision of the party on the choice of the National Assembly leadership. The party in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu said any of such move would attract sanctions. The APC spokesman said the party does not expect any of its members to oppose its position on the zoning of leadership positions in legislative chambers. He said: “If Ndume actually understands democracy, with due respect to the number of years he has spent in the National Assembly as a lawmaker, he should realise that we are practicing presidential system of government. “That would amount to indiscipline and our party’s constitution is very clear on indiscipline. The party has taken a position and anybody we presented for election and who has won an election on the platform of the APC is duty bound, morally bound and status bound to comply with what the party has decided. “When you go against that position of the party, it amounts to indiscipline and our rules are clear on the supremacy of the party.” Explaining how the party arrived at the decision to endorse Lawan, Onilu said consultations were made at the highest level of the party’s leadership caucus. He said that after consulting with top leaders, the party also had to present its position to the president for his input and advice. According to him what happened was that all the leadership organs including the governors elected on the party platform were consulted before the decision to endorse Lawan was taken. Regarding PDP’s position on the choice of National Assembly leadership, Onilu said that if the opposition party has any objection to APC’s decision it has to wait to defeat it on the floor of the legislative chambers. “And what that means is that the party that produced a majority in the National Assembly also will produce leaders in the place. So all the positions that are due to the party, with majority belongs to APC, and PDP has no role whatsoever to play in choice of the Senate president, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and other leadership positions in the National Assembly,” he stated. History is about to repeat itself ahead of the constitution of the leadership of the ninth National Assembly, as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will also field in candidates for the various leadership position, particularly the office of Senate President, Igbere TV reports. This is coming less than 24 hours after a former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume (APC, Borno) said he would challenge the decision of the party to adopt Senator Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe) as Senate President. Igbere TV recalls that the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, at a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and APC Senators-elect, Monday night announced Ahmed Lawan as the party's candidate for Senate Presidency position. In a statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, he said that elected senators and members of the House of Representatives of the opposition party are constitutionally eligible to seek election into any presiding office of both chambers of the National Assembly. “The PDP, therefore, does not only have a constitutional say in the process of the emergence of the leadership of the 9th National Assembly, but will, as a matter of constitutional right, field candidates into presiding offices of both chambers,” Ologbondiyan said in a statement on Tuesday. On the other hand, Ndume, a ranking Senator from the North-East, has expressed dissatisfaction over the decision of his party, the APC to adopt lawmakers for leadership positions in the 9th assembly. Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, Ndume said the position of the party on who emerges the Senate President cannot stand as it did not follow due process, adding that he consulted widely and was given the go-ahead by party leaders to vie for the position. For him, the best the party could have done was to zone the slot of Senate President to a geo-political zone and allow the zone to choose their candidate. “First of all, let me say that the decision by the party to settle for an individual instead of zoning the position to a particular geopolitical zone and also consulting or allowing the senators from that zone to decide who among them they prefer as Senate President, is a surprise. “We were surprised on Monday when national chairman of our party told us a decision had been taken to adopt Ahmad Lawan as candidate from the North-east for the position of the President of the Senate. “Such a decision was taken and we were not given the chance to ask questions. We were not allowed to make comments. “The President made his remarks and after that, the national anthem was recited. “Even the chosen candidate was not given the chance to thank us or say something about it. Those of us that have indicated interests were not consulted or given the chance to make any comments. “The reason why I am shocked and I am sure that is the feeling of my colleagues, is that the constitutional provision for the emergence of the leadership of the Senate is clearly spelt out. “Section 51 (a) of the Constitution says that “there shall be a Senate President and Deputy Senate President who shall be elected by members of the House. “Section 1 of the Constitution clearly states that “this Constitution is binding on all Nigerians and government agencies. “It went further to say that any other law that contravenes the provision of the Constitution is null and void. “As a party that is supposed to be democratic and as a government that insists on allowing due process to prevail, this is strange. A candidate of APC normally emerges by one of three means, namely- consensus, indirect elections and direct primaries,” he said. Although the APC has a clear majority of about 63 elected Senators so far, there are fears that Ndume, who was supplanted by Lawan as Senate Leader in the eighth Senate, sees this as an opportunity to take his pound of flesh. Ndume believes that Lawan colluded with Saraki to effect his removal as Senate leader without prior notice or complaints, therefore, he may want to give the Senate Presidency a shoot with the support of his colleagues from the ruling party and opposition PDP. There are also reports that Senator Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe) enjoys the support of the Saraki group because he appears more acquiescent to the group in its bid to secure the position of Senate President, acting in concert with the PDP caucus. Should the APC not be able to contain its internal dissonance, the party risks going through the same crisis it went through in 2015 when Bukola Saraki defeated the APC-endorsed Ahmed Lawan to emerge Senate president. “It will be farcical if, under his nose and in a back-to-back manner, the President allows the 2015 tragedy to be re-enacted,” a political analyst told Igbere TV on Tuesday night.
