Hi Point

I'm glad that you found my review constructive. I always hide my email addy on forums but I will still be posting here (I think I'm addicted to this site grin).
WebmastersRe: Looking For Criticism On My Website by BlkRaven(f): 8:41pm On Jul 26, 2007
Hi point,

you don't think that if the bottons on the navigation are spaced out it wont look messier?
I was referring to the login form only. Everything in the login form area looks squashed together.

and what should I allign them with?
Not sure how to explain it. Have a look at the login form on this site: http://www.gibraltarlivemusic.com/. The login form is similar to yours except that yours is on the left side of the page.

Everyone keeps saying its messy
It's true. If you look at http://www.gibraltarlivemusic.com/. It's a music site with a lot of content but it is structured and easy on the eye.

How did it feel when you surfed the site? or did you, please someone do it, let me know if its slow, unconnected hard to navigate, boring etc.
I visited your site myself and on first impression, I thought was very messy (sorry undecided). I am not a fan of sites with black backgrounds (they hurt my eyes), but I am aware that some others may like it. The pages take some time to load, even the ones without any images. I enjoyed watching the music video and reading the star interview so no, it's not boring. It has potential and as you said, it's still work in progress. You really should consider reducing the size of those images.

Why not use a simpler Joomla template (without all the heading graphics and navigation buttons) especially as you have a lot of content and images on your site?

Good luck smiley

Hi Point

Here are my observations based on visiting just the home page:
[li]There's too much content and it looks a bit messy [/li]
[li]Under the Naija star interview, the electric blue heading against the black background is too harsh [/li]
[li]It doesn't seem to have a layout. The text boxes in the login form need to be spaced out and properly aligned[/li]
[li]Some of the banners and images are too big and take up a lot of space[/li]
[li]There are many spelling errors[/li]
[li]You have 3 google Ad banners on the main page. You are also asking for donations AND you are selling ringtones. Thought it was a bit much (Maybe it's just me grin). The donation image should reflect that donations are via paypal[/li]
[li]Why do you have a search box at the top, another one at the bottom and a link to another search page under main menu?[/li]
[li]Nearer the top of the page, you have links to Home|Newspapers|Ringtones|Contact us. You also have the same links again under main menu[/li]

Christianity EtcRe: Motivational Speakers Or Gospel Preachers? by BlkRaven(f): 1:27pm On Jul 26, 2007
I don't think Gospel Preachers are motivational speakers. Most preachers I have met are quite judgemental and prejudiced. The reason Nigerian churches are flourishing is because pastors are giving people what the majority want - material wealth, visions and miracles. These preachers should be more concerned about meeting the spiritual needs of their flock.

The only way it can be stopped is when more church goers start placing emphasis on spiritual enlightenment and stop chasing after miracles.
Christianity EtcRe: Are Gays Really Sinners? by BlkRaven(f): 1:26am On Jul 26, 2007
Stop being so judgemental. Forget about whether gays are sinners or not. Focus on your own sins and worry about your own salvation.
RomanceRe: My Boyfriend Only Loves My Money by BlkRaven(f): 12:55am On Jul 26, 2007
What do I do now?
You dump him and move on or you stick with him until he bleeds you dry. You decide.

Are there any men out there who can love a woman even if they don't have money?
shocked
RomanceRe: Is This Being 'materialistic' Or 'romantic' ? by BlkRaven(f): 12:44am On Jul 26, 2007
He may be showing you love in other ways but you are too busy expecting gifts to appreciate the little things he does for you. If he gives you money when you need it, then he sounds like a guy who is practical, not stingy.

Why not just tell him how you feel? He may not realise that it hurts you. Not all men are into giving cards and presents.
WebmastersRe: Please Review This Site by BlkRaven(f): 2:25am On Jul 25, 2007
IMO, the site is really nice. I see you were keeping the colour scheme in line with the book. It was a nice touch but I found the colour a bit harsh.

Some other observations:
[li]On the front page of your site, at the bottom of the screen just above the links you have some text - "A book teaching right values on sexuality etc, ". The text is not very clear[/li]
[li]In the 'FAQ' and 'Contacts' forms, there is no validation before the data is submitted to the server e.g. In the 'FAQ' form, your site visitor must enter a valid email address and a question before the form can be submitted. I tested both forms and was able to submit them without completing any of the fields[/li]
[li]Got a '404 - Page not found' error when I clicked on the 'Share a joke' image[/li]
[li]Don't know if this is of any use to you but your fade out effect works in IE but did not work when I visited your site using Firefox[/li]

If you had just said it was a newbie job you won't be getting so much flak.

IMO, your site needs a complete overhaul. That website could lose you potential clients so it's a good idea to take it down and start from scratch again. A few pointers:
[li]Re-write all the text so that it sells your services well and is free of spelling errors. Use paragraphs properly[/li]
[li]Use good quality graphics and don't overstretch them like you've done on your site. Design a new logo[/li]
[li]Stylesheets, if used properly, will keep formatting consistent across the site. Don't go overboard with font styles, colours and sizes[/li]
[li]Do NOT use marquees[/li]
[li]The page source shows you used a dreamweaver template, tried to customise it and ended up with a bad design. If you are using templates, don't get too creative unless you know what you are doing. Visit popular websites that provide the same kind of service and pay attention to their site navigation, layout and content. It will give you ideas on how to design your site.[/li]
Good luck!
ProgrammingRe: Business Objects Connectivity To Oracle Rdb Database Issue by BlkRaven(f): 3:33pm On Jul 23, 2007

I don't dispute that one can use Oracle to extract data from a different db. What I mean is that if she's connecting to an Oracle database, the data would have to be stored in that database before it can be fed into BusObj.

I just read the OP's post again and she can see the tables in BusObj Universe designer which means she's connecting directly to the database where the data is stored. This renders my previous post invalid. However, I also just noticed that it is an Oracle RDB
database, not an Oracle database. Sounds like BusObj hasn't provided any middleware for Oracle RDB so she's trying to find a workaround hence the RDB ODBC driver. BusObj Tech Support is her best bet.
ProgrammingRe: Business Objects Connectivity To Oracle Rdb Database Issue by BlkRaven(f): 8:22pm On Jul 21, 2007
Hi trini_girl

I use BusObj designer and reporter connected to extract info from an Oracle database.
[li]When you say the Oracle database extracts data from a system built using Focus, does this mean the data is not stored in the Oracle database?[/li]
[li]What version of Oracle are you using?[/li]
[li]What version of Oracle Client have you got installed on your PC?[/li]
[li]Have you been able to run BusObj reports using this Oracle database before?[/li]
You say the connection is successful. I've never heard of Focus. If it is a database system, that *may* be the problem. I don't think you can use Oracle to extract data from another database and feed it into BusObj. You'll have to create a connection directly to the database where the data is stored.

Well said!! It's best to go into programming for the love of it and not just because you see it as a source of income.

worldbest
Learning C/C++ requires time, practice and dedication and it's not easy. I wish I had learned Java instead.

Microsoft Access is easy to learn and good for small databases. The only downer is that recent versions are very unstable when running really complex code. I'm a proponent of open source software so I'm looking to move away from Access to Php/MySQL grin

IMO, you are better off doing a bit of research into different programming languages before deciding on a language or languages that would meet your needs. We all have different opinions on different languages and this will leave you very confused.

Good luck.
