Car TalkChina To Build A Flying Train With A Supersonic Speed Of 4000km/hr by Bmedels26(op): 6:26pm On Sep 01, 2017
In the latest installment of wildly ambitious ideas to reinvent long-distance transportation, China’s state-run space contractor says it is researching a “high-speed flying train” capable of supersonic speeds of nearly 2,500 miles (4,000 km) per hour.

The concept from China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation envisions a passenger pod that uses magnetic levitation and travels through a near-vacuum tube. That also pretty much describes Elon Musk’s much-vaunted Hyperloop concept, but the Chinese version, if these things are to be believed, would eclipse the proposed 750 mph or so top speed of the Hyperloop. It also happens to be about four times faster than commercial air travel and three times faster than the speed of sound.

The agency says it owns more than 200 patents for the project and first aims to hit top speeds of 1,000 km (621 miles) per hour, Quartz reports. The plan is to export the “flying train” to 60 or so countries across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.

The state-run agency has been involved in developing satellites, rockets and missiles. China also operates the world’s fastest network of bullet trains, capable of an operating speed of 217 mph (349 km/h).

Meanwhile, Musk’s Tesla-branded Hyperloop pod just hit 220 mph (355 km/h), which breaks the 201 mph record set earlier this week by the Warr team from the University of Munich at the Hyperloop Pod Competition. Both records happened at the SpaceX test track at its Hawthorne, Calif., headquarters.

Life hacks are all the rage these days. Unfortunately, most of the tricks found across the web aren’t actually very helpful. While using dental floss to cut a birthday cake might be a decent party trick in a pinch, it’s probably not something you’ll use very often.

Keep in mind, Car Hacks isn’t intended to be a replacement for industry best practices or professional maintenance techniques

Enjoy!!!

Car TalkArticle: Why You Should Use Synthetic Oil by Bmedels26(op): 7:14am On Aug 27, 2017
Synthetic oils have caused countless debates and confusion across nearly every automotive forum, and often with good reason. Legally, the term “synthetic” has a pretty loose definition. While some manufacturers would prefer the word synthetic to only apply to oils chemically formulated without the use of petroleum as a base oil, that is simply not how the rating system works.

The majority of motor oils can be divided up into five different groups. An oil’s group number is dependent on the base oil properties used to derive it. Group I and II oils are created using petroleum base oils, and are considered conventional oil. Group III, IV, and V are considered synthetic, even though group III oils are also derived from a petroleum base oil. Regardless of the derivation, group III through V oils have superior properties and have undergone additional chemical processes which make them differ greatly in quality from groups I & II oils. The group rating alone is not sufficient information to determine if one oil is superior to another; each group has individual advantages and disadvantages.

Speaking more generally of synthetic oils as a whole, versus conventional oils, there are legitimately impressive differences between the two. Consider the creation process of a conventional 5W-30 motor oil. The petroleum base oil alone may have the properties of an SAE 5 grade oil. This means at extremely low temperatures, it may be thick, and at high temperatures, it’s fairly thin. To change this, oil companies incorporate additives into the mix, changing the properties. Pour point depressants can reduce the viscosity at low temperatures, and viscosity index improvers can thicken the oil at high temperatures. The resulting stew of chemicals yields a 5W-30 motor oil, common within the industry. When it’s brand new, a 5W-30 conventional motor oil acts exactly like a 5W-30 synthetic motor oil.

Over time, however, the chemical additives used in the conventional oil to alter its properties begin to break-down, vaporize, or get used up. This means that the oil starts to return back to it’s original base oil, from a 5W-30 back to a straight grade 5 oil for our example. As contaminants begin to work their way into the oil, the overall trend over a long duration is that the oil thickens across the entire spectrum. An old and used conventional 5W-30 oil behave very differently than a brand new 5W-30.

Synthetic oils work quite differently. From the start, the chemical structure is designed to match a specific multi-grade oil. That means even without additives, you could have a 5W-30 motor oil, and then certain additives like rust-inhibitors or dispersants will be added to further improve the usefulness of the oil. The result is that over time the synthetic oil does not degrade away back to a less desirable oil as conventional ones do. From a viscosity standpoint, an old 5W-30 synthetic will act pretty similar to a new 5W-30 synthetic, although likely it will be slightly thicker as a result of contaminants.

Why does all this matter? When engineers design the engine, they’re looking to achieve a certain oil flow rate throughout the system, dependent on the temperature of the engine and the speed at which it’s rotating. As oils age, their flow characteristics change, and this changes how well your engine is protected from wear when it operates outside the boundaries of its initial design. While it’s true that from a viscosity standpoint alone, you could match the protection of a synthetic oil simply by changing your conventional oil regularly, often times synthetic oils come with superior quality additives, leading to a cleaner, smoother running engine as well. There’s a reason why most automotive manufacturers have switched over to synthetics directly from the factory.

Car TalkCheck Out The Worlds Fastest House/shed On Wheels by Bmedels26(op): 10:43pm On Aug 26, 2017
An English Man Called Kelvin Nick built this high-speed shed at home with his daughter. Starting with a Volkswagen Passat, powered by a 2.8 V6 good for around 200 horses, Nicks built the steel-framed shed to his own design. But since this mid-sized sedan now weighs more than two tons due to the added building, he also tossed in a bottle of nitrous oxide, which can grant an additional 75 horsepower to the shed’s drag racing potential. And parking remains as easy as with any small house, if not easier.

This unique vehicle’s top speed is limited by not only its mass, but also the fact that it is about as aerodynamic as a pair of Land Rover Defenders welded to a Mercedes G Wagen.

Still, 96.831 miles per hour is not too shabby from a shed that can corner, go backwards and act as the ultimate camping van on a rainy day. Which Britain has plenty of.

Car TalkVolkswagen Engineer Sentenced To Prison by Bmedels26(op): 5:46pm On Aug 25, 2017
A federal judge in Detroit sentenced former engineer James Liang to 40 months in prison on Friday for his role in Volkswagen AG's multiyear scheme to sell diesel cars that generated more pollution than U.S. clean air rules allowed.

Liang pleaded guilty earlier this year to misleading regulators, and had cooperated with U.S. law enforcement officials investigating Volkswagen.

Prosecutors last week recommended that Liang, 63, receive a three-year prison sentence, while his lawyers said a sentence of home detention was appropriate.

U.S. District Court Judge Sean Cox told Liang at a hearing he was part of a long-term conspiracy that perpetrated a "stunning fraud on the American consumer. This is a very serious and troubling crime against our economic system."

Cox also ordered Liang to pay a $200,000 fine, 10 times the amount sought by federal prosecutors. The prison sentence was also longer than the three years prosecutors recommended.

Cox said he hoped the prison sentence would deter other auto industry engineers and executives from similar conduct.

Liang could appeal the sentence, Cox said.

BMW M5: 4.4 seconds

The new M5 is a full second quicker to 62mph than the outgoing F10 version. That’s mostly thanks to the 2017 car employing four-wheel drive: the outgoing model deploys its 560 horses via the rear tyres only. A limited-edition Competition Package for the M5 boosted power output to 600hp – the same as the forthcoming car – and cut the 0-62mph time to 3.9 seconds.

The DB11 is the most beautiful new car on sale: discuss. What isn’t open to debate, however, is the Aston’s 0-62mph time. At 3.9 seconds, it’s a full 0.5 seconds slower than the M5 – despite four additional cylinders and eight (count ‘em) extra horses.

Ferrari F40: 3.9 seconds

The F40 was the 959’s main rival for 80s supercar supremacy. On paper, they were close – both hit 62mph in 3.9 seconds – but Italy bested Germany for driving excitement and wow-factor. Few cars have graced so many bedroom walls as the F40, ours included. Today, the F40’s once-mighty 471hp output lags some 200hp behind Ferrari’s entry-level 488 GTB.

Porsche 959: 3.9 seconds

Get past the oddly conservative, ‘melted-911’ styling and the Porsche 959 is one of the most avant garde and exciting cars of its era. Active four-wheel drive, adjustable suspension, sequential turbocharging and zero-lift aerodynamics were big news in 1986 – as was a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds. Power came from a 444hp flat-six, with air-cooled cylinders and water-cooled heads.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren: 3.8 seconds

Looking back, the SLR seems like a quirk of history, bearing no relation to the epochal F1 that preceded it, nor the ‘modern’ McLarens that followed. Its critical reception was mixed, but many found its combination of sleek styling and explosive performance hard to resist. Just don’t square up to a new M5 at the lights

Homologation specials come no more extreme than the CLK GTR. A road-going FIA GT car with elongated bodywork and extreme aero, its resemblance to your mum’s CLK is fleeting at best. Only 35 examples left Stuttgart, powered by a 612hp V8 driving the rear wheels. At launch in 1997, it was the most expensive car ever made.

In some ways, the XJ220 was only half the car it could have been. Originally revealed with a 6.2-litre V12, it eventually entered production with a 3.5-litre V6 from the MG Metro 6R4. Nonetheless, a not-inconsiderable 550hp meant the biggest cat could hit 62mph in 3.8 seconds: astounding in 1991, yet not even German super-saloon pace in 2017.

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is one of the few cars here that could rival the BMW M5 for practicality. Despite a bonkers name, and an even more bonkers powertrain (a supercharged 6.2-litre Hemi V8 producing 717hp), it falls short on performance – taking an estimated 3.7 seconds to hit 62mph. We’d wager the M5 is slightly easier to drive, too.

Like the 430 Scuderia, the 2013 911 GT3 is a stripped-out version of the 991. Power comes from a 3.8-litre flat-six, while gears are controversially changed using a PDK double-clutch gearbox. Porsche says this is quicker than letting the driver change gears themself – but not quick enough to beat the M5 to 62mph. The 991 GT3 RS, meanwhile, hits 62mph in 3.4 seconds – equal to the BMW. That’s mad.

With VW Group’s expertise, it was never in any doubt whether the firm could build a supercar to rival traditional manufacturers such as Ferrari. What is surprising is that, to many people, the current R8 is just as desirable as a Porsche 911 or Lamborghini Huracan. In standard guise, with a 5.2-litre V10 driving all four wheels, it’ll hit 62mph in 3.5 seconds. If you want to beat a BMW M5 away from the traffic lights, you’ll have to buy the V10 Plus.

BMW has revealed its new 2018 M5 super saloon: and the stats are astonishing. Powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 600hp and 553lb ft of torque, it’ll hit 62mph in just 3.4 seconds and 124mph in 11.1 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph.

To put that into context, we’ve listed some supercars from over the years that are slower than the new M5. Read on…

1. Bugatti EB110: 3.5 seconds

Packing a 3.5-litre V12 with no fewer than four turbochargers producing 560hp, the Bugatti EB110 was ahead of its time in 1991. It became the supercar everyone aspired to – this was long before Volkswagen ownership and the groundbreaking Veyron that followed. Being more than 20 years ago, it’s difficult to find a precise 0-62mph time for the EB110, but most reports suggest it’ll hit 60mph in 3.4 seconds and 62mph in 3.5 seconds. The fact that that’s only marginally slower than the M5 is actually quite impressive for the ancient EB110.
