Car Talk / New Toyota App That Plays Bad Music ……. by Bmedels26(f): 7:21pm On Aug 20, 2017
Ever since cell phones became popular, we’ve all been trying to figure out how to keep them from distracting drivers. Technology like Bluetooth and infotainment systems that read your text messages help, but Toyota may have figured out the best way yet to keep people off their phones while behind the wheel, particularly teenagers.

According to a reliable  source , Toyota has collaborated with London ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi to create the Safe and Sound mobile app. Safe and Sound covers the basics like blocking social media posts and incoming calls when traveling over 9 mph, but it goes a few steps further than that.

When the app is activated, any time the driver (presumably a teen) tries using the phone while driving or if they go over the speed limit, it starts playing their parents’ Spotify playlist. The Spotify accounts for both the child and the parents are linked to Safe and Sound and it will play the child’s Spotify playlist when they’re behaving and switch to mom and dad’s music when they break the rules.

So a teen can try showing off to their friends by driving too fast and will quickly be embarrassed when a show tune from the musical Chicago starts playing instead of the latest Kendrick track. To many teenagers, the threat of being embarrassed is often much more effective than the threat of injury or death.

Luckily, you don’t need a Toyota to use this app, but you do need an Android. No word yet on whether or not this app is coming to iOS. For youngsters, this is another reason to go with Apple over Android.

Car Talk / Now’s Your Chance To Own A Vintage Lamborghini by Bmedels26(f): 6:45pm On Aug 20, 2017
Some of us know the story, but for the uninitiated, here’s the abridged version. Old man Ferruccio Lamborghini was responsible for Lamborghini Trattori, a tractor company founded in 1948 that built agricultural vehicles from surplus military hardware, and Lamborghini Bruciatori, which made oil-powered heaters and air conditioning. He celebrated his success in the expanding postwar Italian economy by buying a Ferrari in 1958, but he wasn’t satisfied with it, because of its fragile clutch and poor road manners. When Enzo Ferrari snubbed his complaints, Lamborghini decided he was having none of that, and after what we presume was one hell of a bender, decided he’d start his own car company, with blackjack… The rest you know.

As for the tractor company? Well, tractors are still sold today with Lamborghini badges, though Automobili Lamborghini and Lamborghini Trattori have been wholly separate entities for decades now, as the car company was originally sold off in 1972 when money became an issue.

Late Wednesday, an auction listing was posted toBring A Trailer, offering up a 1960 Lamborghini 5C Cingolato, a tractor from before the days of the Automobili. After a restoration, this tractor was imported to the United Kingdom, where it resides today. It may just be the cheapest way to own a Lamborghini vehicle you ever come across, even factoring in the potential cost of shipping it overseas.

Don’t expect supercar performance just because of the badge, or the Gulf Racing paint scheme. This tractor is powered by an agriculture-grade 2.2 liter diesel inline three cylinder engine, which made an estimated 40 horsepower when new. In the 5,279 hours of operating time accrued since, we suspect it may have lost a few.

For those who seek an off-the-wall farmland toy, and have a way to get this piece of history home, the current high bid stands at $3,200 USD, and is expected to increase before the auction’s end next Wednesday.

Car Talk / Most Expensive British Car Ever Sold At Auction by Bmedels26(f): 5:46pm On Aug 20, 2017
RM Sotheby's auctioned the 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 race car, chassis no. 1, for $22,550,000. That makes it the most-expensive British car ever sold at auction, according to Sotheby's, let alone the most-expensive Aston Martin. It surpasses the previous high, set least year, by a 1955 Jaguar D-Type that went for $21.8 million.

Known specifically as the DBR1/1, Sotheby's listed it as "the most correct example of what is arguably the most important Aston Martin ever produced." A certain DB5 from Goldfinger might have a rival claim to that title, but nevertheless, the DBR1/1 was the first of only five examples that competed from 1956 to 1959 in the World Sportscar Championship endurance series. While its fellow DBR1's claimed earlier victories, it won the 1959 Nurburgring 1000 KM driven by Sterling Moss and Jack Fairman. Carroll Shelby was also a driver on the team.

DBR1/1 is the only one of the five cars to ever be offered for public sale. There were a number of other Aston Martin race cars at auction this year, including a 1959 DB4GT Prototypde that went for $6,765,000.

The first McLaren F1 imported to the United States sold for an eye-popping $15.62 million Friday at the Bonhams auction. Offered by its original owner, the legendary supercar is in impeccable condition and has all of its service records, including one from just last month.

The F1 gaveled for $14.2 million and the price included a 10-percent buyer’s fee. The sale was held at the Quail Lodge as part of vintage car week in the run-up to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The car, designated a 1995 model, has a 627-bhp DOHC V12 teamed with a six-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel drilled and vented disc brakes, according to the Bonhams listing.

This car is the 37th F1 produced and still wears its original silver exterior and black/grey leather interior. The unnamed owner bought it new from the factory in Woking, England, in 1996. This F1 has 9,600 miles on its odometer – half of them from a European roadtrip its owner took after buying the car.

This F1 was converted to be road legal in the US shortly after purchase, but has been returned to its original form for the auction. All of the conversion pieces, however, were saved. Only seven of the 64 F1s produced were federalized for US roads

Car Talk / Did You Know That You Can Watch Solar Eclipse From Your New Volvo XC60 by Bmedels26(f): 12:19pm On Aug 18, 2017
This coming Monday, people all across America will be stepping outside to watch a total eclipse of the heart … er … sun. For most people in the path of the complete eclipse, the only way to watch will be with pinhole viewers or flimsy cardboard sunglasses. If you happen to own a new Volvo XC60, there’s another option that will allow you to watch the eclipse in style, comfort — and of course, this being Volvo, safety: the XC60’s new eclipse-viewer sunroof cover.

Volvo developed a cover for the panoramic sunroof that perfectly covers the glass in material that will make it safe to watch the solar eclipse from the car. It attaches magnetically for quick installation and removal. It’s free to XC60 owners and will be available at Volvo dealers along the strip of the United States where totality, the complete covering of the sun, will be visible. Supplies are limited, and priority is going to dealers in Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, Missouri, and South Carolina.

Volvo also has you covered for eclipse viewing even if you aren’t where totality will be visible, and you don’t have a XC60. The company will be live streaming the eclipse from four locations in 4K and in 360-degree virtual reality. That stream will be available at www.racingthesun.com.

Car Talk / List Of New Cars That Can Hit 200mph Or Above by Bmedels26(f): 10:40am On Aug 16, 2017
Back in 1987, the Ferrari F40 became the first production road car to exceed the mythical 200-mph barrier with a top speed of 201 mph. Now, Ferrari sells three cars that top out over 200, and even Dodge sells a 204-mph car. Even still, the 200-MPH club is still relatively small, and all the cars in it are quite special. For this list, we used official top speeds and have limited it to cars that can be bought now. That means that seeing 200 on a speedo once doesn’t count, and cars like the Koenigsegg Regera, which are sold out, also don’t count.

Car Talk / Did You Know Electric Cars Are Earning Money In Denmark? by Bmedels26(f): 10:15am On Aug 16, 2017
What if your parked car could earn money? Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems allow electric cars to discharge electricity back into the grid, and a year long trial in Denmark is showing how owners can use that ability to generate cash. A fleet of Nissan e-NV200 vans is earning about 1,300 euros ($1,530) a year with V2G, Francisco Carranza, Nissan Europe director of energy services, said in a recent interview. The trial is being conducted by Nissan and Italian utility Enel SpA.

V2G not only provides electric car owners with a potential way to make money; it also addresses an issue many utilities are concerned about. Utilities already have to work to “balance” their electricity grids, ensuring power is produced at a consistent rate despite peaks and drops in demand. The rise of renewable energy may make that more difficult, since sources like wind and solar produce electricity less consistently.

But a V2G system could allow electric cars to absorb any extra electricity produced by wind or solar sources during periods of low demand, and discharge it back into the grid when demand increases. It’s a similar concept to the stationary energy-storage battery packs marketed by Tesla and other companies, but applied to cars. Those cars essentially become mobile energy-storage units.\

Car Talk / 15 Lovely Cars That Will Be Discontinued For 2018 by Bmedels26(f): 1:41pm On Aug 12, 2017
As is the case with professional sports teams, automakers’ rosters tend to be fluid, with new players being added and others put to pasture with regularity. While in recent posts we highlighted the rookie cars and crossover SUVs that will be making their big-league debuts for 2018, here’s a last look at the models that will be out of options by season’s end.

With sport-utility vehicles now the heavy hitters in the auto business, it should come as no surprise that passenger cars account for most of the models on this list, including two short-lived full-electric cars. At opposing ends of the automotive market, the most notable models being reassigned for 2018 include the venomous Dodge Viper sports car and the at once sensible and senseless Smart ForTwo microcar

Here’s the 15 nameplates you can scratch off your fantasy automakers’ rosters for next year.

Car Talk / New Study Suggests Uber And Lyft Reduce Car Ownership by Bmedels26(f): 12:12pm On Aug 12, 2017
If you live in a city and have ever found yourself thinking you should sell your car and use a ride sharing service like Uber or Lyft, you’re not alone. A recent transportation study found that on-demand ride services actually do impact how many people buy cars. It also found that the presence of those services reduces the number of trips that people take.

Back in May of 2016, Austin, Texas, voted to require stricter background checks on ride-share drivers. As a result, both Uber and Lyft pulled out of the city. This decision gave researchers the opportunity to look at how the increase in on-demand ride services had changed people’s transportation decisions.

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute worked with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and Columbia University to survey more than 1,200 Austin residents about what changes they’d made. Researchers looked at people’s mode of transportation, how frequently they made trips, and whether or not they owned vehicles.

Without those two companies to depend on for rides, 41 percent of people surveyed went back to using their personal vehicles. Nine percent, however, bought new cars. Three percent began using public transportation, and 42 percent switched to one of the smaller ride-sharing services that were still available.

Researchers also found that people who began relying on their personal vehicle again were 23 times more likely to have started taking more trips than those who switched services. They also found that the more inconvenienced someone was by the absence of Uber and Lyft, the more likely they were to buy a car. The most-inconvenienced people were five times more likely to have bought a vehicle to replace their ride-sharing service.

“Our findings show that these ride-sourcing companies do change behaviors. While this study isn’t generalizable to the entire city of Austin, or to other cities, it provides crucial insights that are relevant to policymakers,” said Robert Hampshire, a professor at UMTRI and the study’s lead author, in a statement.

When it comes to public policy, Hampshire also thinks on-demand transportation services provide a net benefit to cities, saying “a 30-percent increase in the probability of switching to personal vehicles … for an individual who is inconvenienced by the service suspension provides strong support for policies that help reduce the likelihood of occurrence of such a suspension. The case for this need is made stronger when one considers that this transition may be associated with a 23-percent increase in trip making.”

Earlier this year, after a new state law passed, both Uber and Lyft returned to Austin, giving researchers the opportunity to study the impact of this change, as well. Based on initial results, it would make sense that car buying and trip frequency would decrease, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Car Talk / Tesla Is Focusing On Major Urban Charging Expansion For EVs (Electric Vehicles) by Bmedels26(f): 11:51am On Aug 12, 2017
Electrified America is coming much more quickly than anticipated and the charging infrastructure isn’t ready to support over 10,000 cars per week that Tesla wants to produce. CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Twitter earlier Thursday that both the Tesla Supercharging network and urban charging networks are about to get a “major” expansion to ready the more dense areas of the U.S. for EVs.

As the number of EVs on the road grows, the number of chargers must as well. Tesla strategically places its Superchargers outside of city centers and more along their connecting routes, enabling commuters to charge their cars without straying from their route as much as possible. Generally, it is as easy as getting off at an exit and navigating to one of the distinguishable charging stations. Tesla is building loads of new Supercharging stations in preparation for the Model 3 launch. In some cases, fleets of “off the grid” charging stations, enabling the use of solar panels and Tesla Powerpacks to store energy.

But that’s not all—especially because. as noted above, Supercharging is generally reserved for traveling, not for city centers. This becomes a problem because although marketed as long range EVs that achieve upwards of 300 miles to a charge, the network still isn’t robust enough to handle long trips in decile areas. The idea client for a Tesla-branded vehicle appears to be those that live in or near urban areas, however yet another problem arises there—on street parking and apartment dwellers don’t always have even the most basic of chargers available at their domicile. This is where Tesla’s urban charger network comes into play.

These “destination chargers” make up Tesla’s urban charging network. Unlike Superchargers, they aren’t nearly as fast to charge a car, nor are they supposed to be. Instead these chargers are slightly lower powered, enabling the electrical grid to handle more cars charging at once at a slower rate. Manhattan is a prime example of this, being a borough of New York City that was prioritized for destination chargers rather than Superchargers.

The overall goal for Tesla is to make its vehicles just as operable as a gasoline-powered car when commuting, or in the city. Adding slower destination chargers to improve their urban network will aide greatly in this by permitting Tesla owners to charge their cars in the middle of the city, something which they previously couldn’t do as easily. Additionally, owners who don’t have charging available at their home will now have more accessible charging to them without traveling further away from their home. In order to achieve optimal Model 3 sales, Tesla will need to continue to charging infrastructure—just like it’s doing now.

Car Talk / KING RAM!!! 2018 Ram 3500 Takes The Truck Torque Crown (video) by Bmedels26(f): 8:59pm On Aug 11, 2017
In the neverending war for bragging rights between pickup manufacturers, Ram just picked up a big one. The new 3500 heavy duty has an updated 6.7-liter Cummins straight-six diesel that produces 930 pound-feet of torque. Not only is that a gain of 30 pound-feet of torque over the outgoing model, but it’s more than the heavy-duty trucks from Ford and GM. Specifically it makes five more pound-feet than the 925 pound-feet of torque in the most potent Ford Super Duty, and 20 more than the Silverado and Sierra heavy-duty trucks that make a maximum of 910 pound-feet.

Ram didn’t provide horsepower specs for the new Cummins engine, though. The outgoing engine made 385 horsepower. If Ram and Cummins were able to get such a large boost in torque, odds are that horsepower has also increased. There’s also a good chance that even with more power, the updated Cummins may not exceed the horsepower ratings of the Ford and GM trucks. The Ford is currently second place in power with 440horsepower, and the GM trucks have the most with 445. Final specs on horsepower, as well as pricing will probably appear soon, since the trucks will be arriving at dealerships at the end of December in Nigeria.

Car Talk / Chinese Researchers Reportedly Developing Car ‘facial Recognition’ For Speed Cam by Bmedels26(f): 2:09pm On Aug 11, 2017
Those days of avoiding tickets with a cheap Pep Boys license plate reflector may be numbered. A group of researchers in China has reportedly developed a new type of vehicle-recognition technology that could make avoiding speed cameras all but impossible. Instead of identifying cars based on their license plates, the new cameras could tell cars apart by the minute individual differences between them—such as scratches, paint imperfections, or other distinct qualities.

The system, according to the Daily Mail, was developed by a team from China’s Peking University, and uses artificial intelligence to sort through those minute imperfections between vehicles and determine distinguishing traits. The researchers even have a menacing name for this Orwellian surveillance technology: They call it a “repression network.”

That “repression network,” according to researchers, works by using artificial intelligence to analyze the images that are captured by cameras; it pulls the pictures apart and separates the features it spots into dual categories, which the creators of the project describe as “coarse attributes and details.”

“We want the deep network to generate two independent sub-features from two different levels,” the researchers reportedly wrote in their paper on the new system. “Each sub-feature can embed more discriminative information for that level and can be better used to perform precise retrieval tasks.”

The wording may be a little obtuse, but the end result is brow-raising enough to cut through the awkward English: This “repression network” could be used to identify vehicles based on footage from surveillance cameras, reportedly even at high speeds. Or, even more worrying, it could be used to identify humans instead of cars—making it easier than ever for governments or other actors to track people without their knowledge.

Luckily for speeders and ACLU members alike, this technology is still in the early stages. According to the Daily Mail, this “repression network” remains a ways away from being ready for deployment, and there are no plans to use it in the real world. Yet.

Car Talk / Alibaba To Launch Its Own Car ....... by Bmedels26(f): 9:12pm On Aug 10, 2017
Chinese giant Alibaba is planning to open a car vending machine in 2018 in an effort to make purchasing a vehicle easier than ever.

Unlike previous vending machine dealerships, including a particularly prominent one in Singapore, Alibaba’s solution will actually allow individuals to purchase a vehicle directly from the machine, rather than simply acting as a storage facility for vehicle owners.

The Telegraph reports that to use the machine, buyers will browse the cars available on their smartphone and press the buy button. The online system will provide a number of financing options and data about the buyer’s credit rating and if everything checks out, the customer will be able to drive off in a new ride with varying monthly payment instalments.

The general manager of Alibaba’s automotive division, Yu Wei, says the service “will make buying cars as easy as buying a can of Coke.”

As you may have guessed, Alibaba won’t be targeting China’s lower classes with its salesmen-free solution. Instead, it will target the wealthy middle and upper class.

Car Talk / There’s $5k(₦1.8m) Reward If You Can Find This Stolen Lamborghini Huracan Spyder by Bmedels26(f): 8:46pm On Aug 10, 2017
Supercars will always be targeted by thieves, and one of the latest ones to have fallen into the hands of the bad guys is a Lamborghini Huracan Spyder.

According to a post by the brother of a man who owns a car rental company in Switzerland, a woman with an Irish ID rented the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder, pictured here, for a few hours.

Nothing to be alarmed so far, but bells started ringing when she didn’t return the vehicle. The company’s representatives then tried locating it via GPS, and found that it was driven to London, UK, overnight. However, someone eventually removed the GPS tracker, and the Huracan vanished, although some reportedly claimed spotting it in Kensington/Knightsbridge.

As far as the ID goes, it’s clearly fake, at it says ‘male’ despite showing a woman, and it has at least one typo, but despite this, the employee that rented the supercar failed to notice these errors.

Anyone who knows where this Lamborghini Huracan Spyder is will be rewarded with 5,000 Swiss Francs, which equals to $5,176 at the current exchange rates.

Car Talk / Ferrari Threatens To Take Legal Actions Against 360 Modena Limo Owner by Bmedels26(f): 8:24pm On Aug 10, 2017
Ferrari can be pretty anal when it comes to modifying its cars or even using its badges on a vehicle other than its own. Now the Italian supercar-maker is threatening to take legal actions against the British owner of the world’s fastest limousine, a modified 360 Modena that can go up a top speed of 166mph – 267 km/h. According to reports, Dan Cawley, 36, of Cheadle, Manchester, has 14 days to remove all prancing horse badges, Ferrari names and “360 Modena” symbols from the 6m (20ft) supercar-limo.

“What kind of precedent does it set when you can’t do what you like with your own property?” asked Mr Cawley. Ferrari’s lawyers support that since Mr Cawley cut the 360 Modena in half and inserted a 3m (9.5ft) section of hand-built carbon fibre, the car is no longer a Ferrari, so he has to remove the badges and logos or else he’ll face legal action for infringing the Ferrari trademark.

Gaming / List Of American Cars On Forza Motorsport 7 by Bmedels26(f): 4:11pm On Aug 10, 2017
With the latest portion of the Forza Motorsport 7 car list revealed, we now know what 405 of the more than 700 cars in the game will be. The latest cars revealed are machines from the Land of the Free, and the Home of the Horsepower. Yes, these 101 cars are from the States. At least most of them are. Mixed in are cars with American brand names that actually hail from different countries.

Ford takes advantage of this to give it the largest number of cars this week. A total of 36 cars with the Blue Oval are listed. They include thoroughly American machines such as the Bronco and the Mustang Mach 1, but there are many cars from Ford’s European and Australian branches. There are loads of Australian Falcons and European Escorts. There are also some other transplants from other automakers such as the Eagle Talon TSi (Mitsubishi Eclipse GST) and the Australian-developed 1972 Chrysler VH Valiant Charger R/T E49. But hey, America is a melting pot, so they’re perfectly welcome.

There are loads of homegrown American cars, too, including Chargers, Camaros, Trans Ams, Corvettes, and even a few Jeeps. We’re particularly excited to see the Hellcat-powered, Wrangler-based, Trailcat concept included. There’s also the current Viper ACR, so you’ll be able to see if you can set a virtual time at the Nürburgring close to the one the Viper privateers set. You can check out this week’s list of car’s below.

Car Talk / Microchip Company (INTEL) To Build Self Driving Car by Bmedels26(f): 1:47pm On Aug 10, 2017
Mobileye, an Israeli technology company recently acquired by Intel, is preparing to deploy a fleet of a Self-driving vehicles around the world.

The first vehicles arrive later this year, and the fleet will eventually scale to more than 100 cars. These will be sourced from a variety of automotive brands. The U.S., Israel, and Europe will serve as testing grounds for these highly automated vehicles.

“Geographic diversity is very important as different regions have very diverse driving styles as well as different road conditions and signage,” Mobileye boss Amnon Shashua said in a release. “Our goal is to develop autonomous vehicle technology that can be deployed anywhere, which means we need to test and train the vehicles in varying locations.”

The autonomous cars will leverage technology from both Mobileye and Intel. Mobileye brings to the table its collision detection software, while Intel offers its expertise in chip technology.

“Neither company could do this alone,” Shashua said. “Given resident skill-sets within the two companies, a standalone fleet of test vehicles is possible almost immediately.”

Shashua says Intel’s fleet will accelerate the rollout of driverless cars while reducing costs for the auto industry. By learning from the data that is collected over the course of the test run, Intel can help automakers save lots of money on development.

The vehicles will be capable of Level 4 autonomy as defined by SAE. Achieving “high automation,” Level 4 cars can make important decisions such as accelerating, braking, and changing lanes by themselves.

Last year, BMW announced it was partnering with Intel and Mobileye to create a platform the industry can use to develop self-driving cars. Delphi has since joined the collaboration. BMW wants to bring a self-driving car to mass production by 2021, just like many other automakers that are targeting next decade for introducing autonomous vehicles.

Car Talk / WARNING!!! Don't Put Your Feet On The Dashboard Of Your Car (Video) by Bmedels26(f): 8:10pm On Aug 09, 2017
Propping your legs up on a vehicle’s dashboard could break your body for life.

Airbags deploy at between 100 and 220 miles per hour, and could “send your knees through your eye sockets” in the event of a crash, Tennessee’s Chattanooga Fire Department warns.

The message, one the department shared last year, too, is a frightening one that a Georgia woman is all too familiar with.

Two years ago, Audra Tatum had her legs crossed with one foot on the dashboard when she was involved in a crash that deployed the airbag, sending her foot into her face, CBS News reports.

“The airbag went off, throwing my foot up and breaking my nose,” Tatum, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, told CBS. “I was looking at the bottom of my foot facing up at me.”

Besides her nose, Tatum broke her ankle, femur and arm, telling CBS she still walks with a limp and can’t stand more than 4 hours at a time.

Car Talk / Check Out The First Hydrogen-electric Semi-truck by Bmedels26(f): 7:32pm On Aug 09, 2017
Nikola Motor Company revealed its hydrogen-powered semi truck late last year. The sleeper cab version is called the Nikola One, while the day cab truck, called the Two, is less expensive. The interior wasn’t complete at the reveal, but now Nikola is showing what the sleeper cab of the One will look like in a set of renderings, above.

We have to say, its interior space provides a futuristic vibe appropriate to a vehicle that represents the evolution of commercial trucking. Starting with the driver interface, the dash looks simple and uncluttered, but dominated by a large, central touchscreen display. In the rendering, the screen displays a map with various points on interest, driver and company information and reviews, and even revenue information. The digital instrument panel provides useful info, including the remaining driving range, as well as a visualization of cars that might be driving alongside the truck in the driver’s blind spots.

The sleeping quarters are particularly interesting, and the space looks like something from a sci-fi movie (but in an exciting, non-apocalyptic way). It features a double bunk layout, lots of storage bins, a TV screen, as well as a tablet next to the bunk. This bedside control unit allows the occupant to control a number of functions — air conditioning, heating, lighting, etc. — from the bunk via Wi-Fi. The top bunk is removable, and can be easily switched out for a modular storage system. The renderings also highlight the ambient lighting throughout the cab.

Nikola also provided some updates today on Twitter. The One’s drive train is capable of taking off from a stop on a 30 percent grade with an 80,000-pound load. The truck will have 6X4 all-wheel drive, and be capable of nearly 60-degree turning. It will be compatible with dual or super single tires. Road testing of the Nikola One will begin next year, and the company is planning a “huge party” for when the first truck rolls off the test assembly line. Lastly, the company says it will show the redesigned Nikola Zero UTV in the next 60 days.

Car Talk / New Nissan Leaf Shows Off Aerodynamic Design (video) by Bmedels26(f): 9:08am On Aug 09, 2017
We’re a month away from seeing the next-generation Nissan Leaf in the flesh, and the automaker has released a new teaser image previewing the car’s aerodynamic design.

From what we can tell, the Leaf loses its bulbous rear end and adopts an egg-shaped appearance reminiscent of the Chevrolet Bolt. Nissan says its engineers redesigned the shape of the vehicle to reduce drag, increasing efficiency and allowing drivers to travel further on a single charge. Also, the new Leaf is lower to the ground than its predecessor, allowing for better stability at high speeds. Other new design features help improve stability when the car encounters strong crosswinds.

The next-gen Nissan Leaf will make its world debut on September 6 and go on sale before the end of the year. Leading up to the reveal, Nissan has teased the car’s unusual headlights and faux grille. We also know the new Leaf will feature semi-autonomous driving technology. A feature called ProPilot will help control acceleration, braking, and steering to keep the Leaf positioned in its lane on the highway. Over time, this feature will expand to include multi-lane highway driving and city intersections.

Car Talk / Rear-seat Passengers Still Ignoring Seat Belts, Study Finds by Bmedels26(f): 8:50am On Aug 09, 2017
It’s sort of crazy to think that, in this day and age, people still think seat belts aren’t worth the effort. Yet according to a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, it appears plenty of folks still refuse to buckle up, at least in the back seat.

Of the 1,172 respondents polled who have been in the back seat of a car in the last six months, 28 percent claimed that they don’t always buckle up, the IIHS reports. Only 9 percent of that group said they don’t always wear a seat belt in the front seat, which is better, but still a bit surprising.

The group least likely to buckle up in the back is adults between the age of 35 and 54. Only two-thirds of this group admitted to always using a rear seat belt. Women were more likely to buckle up than men, and college graduates across both sexes were also more likely to use the seat belt.

You might be screaming, “Why?!” in your head. Well, according to those who admitted to using rear seat belts less, a quarter responded that they believed the back seat was safer. The next most popular excuse was, believe it or not, ignorance. Either they forget to put it on or they simply don’t. 10 percent of respondents claimed the belt was too difficult to use, or they couldn’t find the belt or buckle.

Nearly 40 percent of rear-seat-belt-ignoring respondents claimed they don’t buckle up because there isn’t a law against it. Strangely enough, only 60 percent of that group said they would buckle up if there was such a law in their state.

“People who don’t use safety belts might think their neglect won’t hurt anyone else. That’s not the case,” said Jessica Jermakian, an IIHS research engineer, in a statement. “In the rear seat a lap/shoulder belt is the primary means of protection in a frontal crash. Without it, bodies can hit hard surfaces or other people at full speed, leading to serious injuries.”
