PoliticsPetrol Price Hike Insensitive, PDP, LP Tell APC, Presidency by Bobloco(op): 10:08am On Jul 20, 2023
FOLLOWING the increment in the pump price of petrol from N488 to between N568 and N617 per litre, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Labour Party, LP, yesterday, rejected the hike, describing it as an act of provocation by the All Progressives Congress, APC-led administration against Nigerians.

While the PDP accused the APC of extreme insensitivity and callousness towards Nigerians, the LP, on its part, said it was just the beginning of hard times Nigerians will be facing under the current administration.

Also, human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, yesterday, insisted that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL, should be restrained from further fixing the prices of petroleum products in the country.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives, also yesterday, resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to look into the incessant increase in fuel prices.

APC provoking Nigerians with fuel price hike- PDP

Faulting the recent hike in petrol price, PDP accused the ruling party of extreme insensitivity and callousness towards Nigerians.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Debo Ologunagba, insisted that the new subsidy regime, which enjoyed the endorsement of the APC-led administration, was worsening an already dire economic situation.

Ologunagba, in a statement, said: “The party cautions that the increase is worsening the already suffocating economic situation under the APC and has the capability of triggering a very serious crisis in the country if not abated.

“It is appalling that instead of seeking ways to stabilize and grow the economy, the APC administration has abandoned the welfare of Nigerians which is the primary purpose of Government under Section 14 (2)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and left the citizens to the vagaries of market forces and an exploitative cabal; a disposition that is characteristic of a government that is not accountable to the people.

“The PDP is alarmed that with its ill-thought out, badly planned and hurriedly-executed policies, the APC is running Nigeria’s economy aground with the value of naira rapidly plummeting, businesses and production shutting down; citizens losing their means of livelihood, commercial and social activities crippled, with millions of families no longer able to afford their daily needs as the costs of food, medication and other essential goods and services continue to skyrocket.
“The present dire situation comes as a consequence of APC’s insensitivity, seething corruption, scandalous cluelessness and lack of capacity to effectively steady and manage the nation’s economy.

“Indeed, this is not the nation that Nigerians yearned for after the abysmal, harrowing and inhuman eight years of the Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration as the situation has currently gone from a frightening bad to a terrifying worse with no hope in sight.

“The PDP dismisses APC’s insensitive and lame argument of market forces and comparison of the price of fuel in Nigeria with those of other countries which have functional infrastructure, variety of affordable alternative transportation system and sources of energy; strong currency and where citizens earn far higher than what obtains in Nigeria.

“Our Party insists that the N617 per litre of fuel is excessive, unacceptable and cannot be justified under any guise. This is especially given the economic potential and prospects within our country.’’

Brace up for tougher times — LP

On its part, Labour Party noted that the latest adjustment in the pump price of petroleum products is just the beginning of the hard times Nigerians will be facing under the APC-led government.

The party recalled how it earlier cautioned Nigerians against believing the dummy being sold to them by the APC administration about the withdrawal of fuel subsidy, saying the ruling party had no plan in place to ameliorate their sufferings.

LP, in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said: “The Labour Party had earlier warned that the bourgeoisie government in place can only enrich the upper class and inflict penury on the proletariat.

“You offer a paltry N8,000 to a family of five and extract all they have laboured for through obnoxious policies.

“Nigerians do not deserve what they are getting from the present government. The Labour Party condemns the attitude of the government to its people. This is even coming at a time the Nigerian currency has continued to devalue under the watch of this government.

“We are however optimistic that Nigeria will overcome the Taskmaster of our time. We will soon witness the Promised Land.”

PDP, LP also promised to remove subsidy —APC

Although the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Felix Morka, did not respond to media inquiries, a director in the party, who did not want his name published because he had no clearance to speak with the media, said; “I do not think this is an issue we have to respond to. PDP promised to remove fuel subsidy as well during the campaigns.”

Our position on fuel subsidy stands—Presidency official

Efforts to get the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, Dele Alake, to react to the PDP and LP proved abortive but a presidency official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the Presidency maintains its position on fuel subsidy removal.
The Presidency official said: “We can’t be reacting to everything the PDP and LP say. Let them say whatever they want to say, we have already maintained our position. If they want to be reacting to everything, that is their problem. When we have thinto say, we will say it.”

Reps reject call for suspension of new price of N617
Also yesterday, the House of Representatives resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to look into the incessant increase in fuel prices.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance, titled ‘The need to investigate the incessant increase in fuel pump price’, moved by Mr Ikenga Ugochinyere at plenary.

However, an amendment moved by another lawmaker, urged the House to direct the NNPCL to suspend the new pump price of N617 and revert to the old price of N540 was put to vote by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Benjamin Kalu, lawmakers unanimously rejected the amendment, shouting ‘NAY’.

To investigate incessant hikes in fuel price

Speaking on the amendment, Kalu, who presided over plenary, said the amendment will not be taken because they would not want to pre-empt what the ad hoc committee’s investigation would be.

Moving the motion, Ugochinyere noted that the incessant hike in fuel prices had, in turn, caused hardship for Nigerians.

According to him, the high cost of transportation will, in the coming days, lead to a hike in food prices in the market.

The lawmaker said: “Mr Speaker, this is the peoples’ House and we represent the Nigeria people, very soon with the way things are going, fuel will be sold for N1,000 per litre.”
He, however, urged the House to set up an ad hoc committee to summon the Group Managing Director of the NNPCL to look into the increase in fuel price. The motion was, therefore, carried when put to a voice vote.

NNPCL lacks power to fix price of petrol — Falana

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond, ASCAB, Mr Femi Falana, yesterday, insisted that NNPCL lacks the power to fix prices of petroleum products in any part of Nigeria.

Falana also noted that having liberalised the NNPCL, the company should be restrained from further fixing the prices of petroleum products in the country. The legal luminary, in a statement, said: “In his inauguration address delivered on May 29, 2023, President Bola Tinubu announced that his administration will govern the country under the rule of law.

“The commitment implies that the actions of the Government and its agencies will be carried out under the law. The people of Nigeria were taken aback yesterday when the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited increased the pump price of petrol from N500 to N617.

“After increasing the price, the NNPCL turned round to claim that it was fixed by market forces. It is submitted that the increase of the pump price of petrol by the NNPCL is an affront to the rule of law on the ground that it is illegal in every material in particular.

“In Bamidele Aturu v Minister of Petroleum Resources (Suit No FHC/ABJ/CS/591/2009), Plaintiff challenged the plan of the Federal Government to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry and allow market forces to determine the prices of petroleum products.

“In a landmark judgment delivered on March 19, 2013, the Federal High Court, presided over by Adamu Bello J. (as he then was) held that by the combined effect of the Petroleum Act, Price Control Act and the Constitution, the Federal Government ‘must always fix the price of petroleum products sold across Nigeria.’

“Specifically, the reliefs granted by Federal High Court include the following: “A declaration that the policy decision of the Defendants to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices at which petroleum products may be sold in Nigeria is unlawful, illegal, null, void and of no effect whatsoever being in vicious violation of the mandatory provision of section 6 of the Petroleum Act, cap P.10, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

“A declaration that the policy decision of the Defendants to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices at which petroleum products may be sold in Nigeria is unlawful, illegal, null, void and of no effect whatsoever being in flagrant violation of the mandatory provision of section 4 of the Price Control Act, cap P28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.’’

PoliticsNigerians Will Dance On The Streets If Tinubu’s Election Is Nullified - PDP by Bobloco(op): 8:10am On Jul 20, 2023
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said Nigerians will take to the streets in jubilation if the courts nullify the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election.

Pedro Obaseki, Director of Strategy and Research of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), said this in Abuja on Wednesday.

Obaseki, who addressed the press ahead of the judgement by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), also expressed confidence that the PDP believed in the ability of the judiciary to deliver fair judgement that will be acceptable to parties concerned.

He also said because of the mounting evidence in their possession, the Tribunal judges will summon the courage to address issues raised, adding that the image of the country is at stake a development he said the judges will not take lightly.

Obaseki who is also a lawyer spoke about the petition by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) seeking the nullification of Tinubu’s victory, adding that the “issue of eligibility is key”.

He said: “There is still a watershed moment and that moment might just be provided by the Allied Peoples Movement petition in this election. That does not in any way discontinuance the other mounting evidences. We were here when the election took place, we were here when the election were declared and we are still waiting for those that want to celebrate, they have not celebrated.

“You may be shocked that immediately there is a judgment that does not validate the supposed election of President Tinubu people will run into the street to celebrate, that is the truth.”

Speaking on why the APM case is different from that of the PDP, he said, “ The first thing is eligibility, if ten people follow me to run a race I can begin to question who won, only if those ten people were qualified, that is what has been thrown up by the APM petition.”

The APM which is challenging INEC’s declaration of Tinubu as winner of the 2023 presidential election, based its arguments on the grounds that Shettima, had double nomination as a Senatorial and Vice Presidential candidate before the February 25 polls.

The party prayed the tribunal to nullify Tinubu’s election on the grounds that the process through which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner was “flawed”.

Obaseki said “ If you look at what APM has done, they started by why and when they can question an election and stated three clear provisions, when elections can be questioned, such as section 134 of the electoral act of 2022 as amended.

“As at the day of the nomination process Mr Shettima had two nominations, that is a statement of fact. That is what this petition by the APM has gone ahead to prove beyond reasonable doubt, the reasonable doubt will only occur if the petition is based on hear say.”

The accountability and transparency of his governance his top notch.

His economic policies are calculative with a sharp maneuvering, that’s bound to yield immense benefits in the long run. With deregulation in power generation and oil, the future of Nigeria is guaranteed. The dividends are not far from today.

His sense of conflict resolution is next to none. Asiwaju has always been meeting with warring stakeholders to seek resolutions that won’t impact the nation. He is not a master, but a servant leader.

As of date, security has improved in the country, OUTSIDE those who have personally chose to decimate themselves which is not hurting the economy.

His International influence is solid and putting Nigeria back on the world stage, which will definitely come with dividends.

If one is guaranteed, His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) is going to steer Nigeria to greater heights. I have no doubts he will be the best President in the history of Africa.

PoliticsFuel Purchase Reduced By 50 Per Cent, Reduce Pump Price – IPMAN Begs Tinubu by Bobloco(op): 5:47am On Jul 20, 2023
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, has said the purchase of fuel has reduced by 50 percent.

IPMAN’s Chairman in Enugu depot, Chinedu Anyaso, blamed the reduction on the hike of the pump price of fuel.

Lamenting that the negative situation has affected marketers, Anyaso urged the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal government to reduce the pump price of fuel.

NAN reports that he warned that most marketers might shut down, a situation that may lead to the collapse of the downstream sector.

According to Anyaso: “Marketers are facing an existential challenge due to low profits as a result of reduced sales affecting their abilities to meet their operational costs and obligations with banks.

“Marketers are worse affected by this policy of subsidy removal, profitability has reduced because average sales have reduced by about 50 per cent.

“We appeal to the Federal Government to save downstream operations from collapsing by working on reduction in pump prices.”

PoliticsNNPCL Monopoly Ends As Marketer’s Fuel Vessel Arrives by Bobloco(op): 4:48am On Jul 20, 2023
First batch of petrol, 27 million litres imported by an independent marketer has arrived in the country, putting an end to a downstream monopoly market once enjoyed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The vessel, ST Nnene earlier billed to arrive since last week, but was held down off Lome waters due to adverse weather, birthed at Ijegun-Egba on Wednesday following the official end to subsidies by President Bola Tinubu on May 29.

ST Nnene, The PUNCH gathered, had cost Emadeb Energy’s Chief Executive Officer, Adebowale Olujimi, and its bank partners of $17m (about N13b) to hire.

Five financial institutions- Polaris, First Bank, Union Bank, Access Bank and Fidelity bank had bankrolled the deal.

This was as foreign exchange rose from N745 to one dollar three weeks ago, to N845 as of Tuesday, and crude price rising to $80 per barrel as of 1:45pm Nigerian time on Wednesday.

Until now, state oil firm NNPCL had enjoyed a monopoly downstream market for years. The firm had singlehanded imported petrol consumed in-country, and had dictated prices.

Since the end of subsidies which cost the country about N12tn, prices of petrol had risen from an average of between N180/N200 per litre, to N614 per litre as of Tuesday.

While speaking at the ceremony, Olujimi said petrol importation was no longer sustainable.

According to him, resuscitating local refining was the way to go.

He said, “Petrol importation is not a sustainable way for a country to run. From what we saw yesterday when PMS price rose to over N600 per litre, it is an indication that the dynamics of the business is a tough one. It requires huge US dollars to bring in this. The way forward is for local refineries to be revived,” he said.

Representing the Chief Executive Officer, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, Sadiq Bashir, explained that the development was an important milestone since the downstream sector was deregulated.

He said, “This is what we have been looking forward to. When we talk about deregulation, people think it’s all about increasing prices. No. Although prices would now be determined by market dynamics, deregulation also opens up the market for other players to come in.

“Yes, we would experience teething problems at first; however, if market forces are allowed to come into play, prices would eventually go down due to high competition. We assure that NMDPRA would continue to ensure quality control of products being sold to the public.”

General Secretary, the Natural Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Afolabi Olawale, also canvassed for local refining.

He said, “If we want to go for deregulation, we should not go for importation. We should not submit our economy to be determined by foreign firms. But since we are there now, the government needs to speed up on palliatives because things are hard on everybody. We also enjoin marketers to shun excessive profiteering.”

The National Controller Operations, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mike Osatuyi, said issuing licences to independent marketers to import would give rise to competition and fairness in the downstream sector.

He advised marketers to satisfy their customers by selling at fair prices, and dispensing the correct quantity.

Meanwhile, the Group Chief Executive (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari recently said that Nigerians should not expect that the local production of PMS by Dangote, Port Harcourt and other refineries will have effect on petrol pump price.

According to him, “There is a notion that if the product is processed locally, prices will reduce. Let me make it clear that it is not going to change anything. If you produce locally, the refineries will also input the cost of production and other things and it will be sold at the current price.

“There will also be no subsidy when local production starts because there is no cash-to-back subsidy, this country no longer has the resources to continue with subsidy,” Kyari stated

I think our problem right now is the NNPCL

That body should be scrapped and a regulatory agency in form of NAFDAC set up to regulate the activities of these oil marketers
