Abifarin16: Good observation. You would have to ask the people who were ECOWAS chairman during that period of those said coup. When Buhari was ECOWAS chairman and Gambia went the coup route, Buhari's matched the Standby forces there and they reinstated the leader before the standby forces got there.
It is safe to say under Nigeria watch as ECOWAS chair coup don't hold, Tinubu might just be following the antecedent of things.
It is also Safe to safe that Nigeria is the only ecowas member state that has the capacity, in terms of finance, personnel and otherwise to maintain the status quo (democracy) in the sub region.
The treaty to establish ECOWAS was signed in Lagos, Nigeria is very deeply rooted in ECOWAS.
A lot of times we just judge things on the basis of emotion and a lot of ignorance. Okay, makes for a decent explanation. However, now that Bola Tinubu is Chairman of Ecowas, don't you think people will feel puckered out that he hasn't spit a word to even address the issue ot the other three existing military governments within the region? I mean, Ecowas has had about three sittings since Tinubu assumed the lead role to this day, but not once has a word been said about the other Juntas, not even in summary reference. It's all been about Niger republic and that leaves a lot of curious minds wondering why. |

Abifarin16: They cease to be able to do whatever they want they moment they joined ECOWAS. Now their is a criteria for being a member of AU, UN, and ECOWAS. One that I am very sure of is that you cannot be a member to the above mentioned group and have a military head of state, talk more of a coup. The above agency have responsibilities of maintaining the leadership status of member nations which is what ECOWAS is trying to do. If they will not revert back to a democratic system the whole west and Africa will cut ties with them it's simple. You guys just complicate thing with your emotions strong desire to not want to learn. If you are married to a woman and she wakes up one day and say she want to leave you and be married to your neighbor next do, will she continue to receive the privileges that she used to receive when you were under a marriage agreement? One particular question you folks keep evading: Why is Ecowas not considering military intervention in the first three regions that fell to coups before Niger? What's making this case unique? Nothing about the double standard is making any sense. |

favor914: The great Bob Marley best said it, “ You can fool some people sometimes, but you can’t fool all the people all the time”.
History is there, for everyone to study, Odumegwu Ojukwu stole a Peoples identity, & used it for his own selfish interest to perpetrate a crime against humanity.
Why? Because the same riverine people who were the masters centuries earlier by way of early contact with the Portuguese & British & had now lost their might in present times, where tired of been slaves to the hinterland tribes of Aro Chukwu, & wanted their freedom, which Ojukwu & Co were not ready to surrender.
Hence a war for freedom broke out, which the Nigerian Government won, giving rise to Rivers & Cross Rivers State. Your knowledge of history is particularly impressive. These days we just sit down and watch the Igbos go about with their very disturbing idea of Biafra. Considering what they subjected us to between December 1967 and June 1968, ransacking our homes, killing, maiming and burning because we refused to succumb to the alliance they needed, there's no way the Niger Delta can ever share the same region with the Igbos. My grandfather's one storey building was burnt to the ground by Biafran soldiers. He was one of the few educational administrators trained by the British colonialists and among the first three individuals to own solid cement structures in his hometown. So the Biafran history can never be lost on me cause my maternal family lineage was one of the unfortunate victims. |

ebufa: Gold coast took the name of Ghana empire in present day Mali........Abyssinia took the name of Ethiopia( ancient name of Africa) .....Republic of Benin took the name of Benin empire......of present day Edo state in Nigeria! Why can't ndigbo take Biafra.........which was the original homeland of all Bantu peoples in Africa! In case you do not know the Igbo DNA is closer to the Bantus of Congo, south Africa and East Africa than any other tribe in Nigeria! Audacious claims like this account for why other major tribes demonise you Igbos. Y'all seem to lack tact and diplomacy when dealing with sensitive issues. You rather prefer to lie and bruise your way through issues where you end up losing out at the end of the day. So you're not disputing the fact that the name "Bight of Biafra" wasn't originally yours. But you're vehemently insisting you have every right to lay claims to it because other old African regions acted similarly? The Igbo DNA is the closest to the Bantu people of East Africa? Wow! I am from the "Ekoi" minority tribe of the present day Yakurr people of Cross River State and a direct descendant of the same ancestral Bantu stock you're here trying to colonise o ! And if we both decide to turn this thread into a platform for historical fact-finding, I'll make you understand that my Bantu ancestors long settled along the coastal regions of defunct Biafran waters, even before yours recognised it potentials. |

favor914: Who are biafrans, free from what or who? Please go and read history correctly.
Biafrans are the riverine people, I.e. Ibibios, Kalibaris, ijaws, Ikwerres, never have I heard any of those tribes say anything about been independent, other than been independent from the oppressive tribe of the hinterland, that used their identity in disguise to fight a civil war, because the real biafrans wanted their freedom from them. That's the irony of this entire scenario. The Bight of Biafra is originally a geographical concept of the riverine states of the Niger Delta. How history has been so twisted to the point that Igbos are now telling an entirely different story and even trying to hold the SS to ransom just to actualize their biafra, is something that befuddles sane minds. |

Heffalump: He knows his efforts will be worthless! He is the most unfit and unqualified person to mediate in a manner as this. @OP don't forget we are talking about Democracy here and military coup led by juntas.
How do you expect Buhari who was a junta himself to stop another junta? Evil begets Evil!! Asides from being a former junta, Buhari's performance as a democratically elected president is the worst in the whole of Africa. He should hold a Guinness world Record for this. Apart from the woos his government brought to Nigerians, he committed an uncivilized coup by ensuring that he handed over power to someone who never won an election. His anti democratic idiosyncrasies qualifies him as military junta he ever is, and not different from the Nigerien coup plotters.
I told people that Buhari will be lost and forgotten after few months. Obasanjo and GEJ will forever be remembered for their enviable qualities as Nationalists. The same way the world will continue to celebrate them. Sometimes we do things right for posterity to judge. But he was packaged and sold to Nigerians by Ebola Tinubu as a "reformed democrat" in 2015. Wetin come change? |
