There are several terrains in which having an efficient Air force is only as good as a chocolate teapot. Air force in several cases are only good for taking out enemy defense systems or maintaining covers for precision strikes. You will have to dump your fast moving jets for military helicopters on the real battle field, and everyone knows these things are easily susceptible to laser guided rocket propelled launcher.

Now think of a situation where more than a 250,000 soldiers are stationed in strategic terrains with launchers that can bring your attack helicopters? Then you have to resort to putting boots on the ground, using tanks etc.

The lesson there is simple, you can't fight all your wars in the air,otherwise Afghanistan and Iraqi war would have been over several years ago, you still have to get down and dirty. And when you are facing a million soldiers, you really don't stand much chance.

You are spot on! But you, me and every other person on this thread generally stick to the assumption that war is predictable.

It is really not. It could go from being a game of chess into some of the bloodiest wars mankind has ever fought, and you can't tell, from the start, on whose part you may end up fighting, against who. The global war is far too connected, and allies can become adversaries in a matter of hours. In the end, it isn't about who wins or loses, but who is left.

This is why i sometimes question the stvpidity of my own excitement when i watch two countries muscle up and saber rattle. This is not a movie, where you could be warned ahead not to "try this at home" ....this is reality, where humans perish and lives change forever.

There's no way in this world that the Yanks would nuke NK. I somehow think besides bullying there isn't much left to the use of nuclear weapons.

In a way, I am thinking neither the Chinese, nor the US nor the Japanese are interested in seeing both koreas unite. For selfish reasons of course. A united Korea under a communist government is a good thing for the Chinese and a bad thing for the West. A united korea under a diplomatic government is a good thing for the west and a bad thing for the Chinese. Either case, the Japanese are likely to lose out.

That said, a United Korea also has the ability to grow into a force that could rival every other force in the east in another decade or more, obviously, no one is interested in seeing this happen.

What would NOrth Korea gain from instigating a military confrontation with the united states?

As i have said before it is no crime to develop nuclear capability for the sole purpose of self defence - the north koreans have no desire to end up as slaves of america and europe like all the african countries including nigeria.

Which part of it is propaganda? Most of the messages threatening were broadcasted on North Korea state TV channels. The nuclear test was all too glaring for even the blind to see, so also was the missile test, so which ones are propaganda?

There's no crime to develop nuclear capability, but if every country owns one, then the world would be done before midnight. There's a reason the US and Russia are both reducing the numbers in their arsenal, not increasing it. If South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Mongolia choose to develop nuclear capabilities, not even the Chinese would be able to sleep comfortably in their beds at night.

North Koreans stand to gain nothing from striking the US, and they are not really planning to. But in North Korea, and as the head of a communist government, it is a win if you can militarily muscle the US to the negotiating table by threatening the South with military strikes. North Korean leaders have done it several times in the past, this time, the US is simply saying "Bring it on, Fat boy"!

You would be surprised what printing powers Uncle Sam owns when the US is actually at War. Not only does the US president have the ability to declare states of emergency and implement unpopular economics- like printing a 5 trillion dollar coin - it can do so without the approval of congress in a state of war. Although technically, attacking North Korea will not be seen as US being in a state of war, but this is just to give you a context.

Additionally, the US can choose to deliberately devalue it's currency, meaning the 3trillion dollars owed to the Chinese would only be worth a few thousand quid. Guess who would lose?

China cannot simply "want out of dollar". The dollar is a global language! It's a benchmark currency! All commodities are priced in US dollar terms. When the US lost its prized triple A ratings, there's a reason investors still consider it as a safe haven! It's simple, if you are not using the dollar, what else would you use?

There's no point treating this question like it is much of a big deal. You've been on nairaland more than long enough to know that these sorts of questions are not new on the career section.

Many companies like to ask directly at an interview about the potential employee's salary expectation and all that. It is important to have these sorts of information handy, not only to be in a better position at negotiating your total package with your potential employer, but also to manage your expectations regarding what they may offer.

Of course, if someone says Conoil pays xyz, it shouldn't mean you have to take their word for fact, but at least it gives you a good insight into what you may expect and you may negotiate.

Well Truth is, they aren't scared. Syria is not really in US's interest. The US government knows Syria is very fluid compared to Libya. The opposition is unorganized, and their are several factions all with different objectives. The US government also knows a military strike on Syria will prompt the need for occupational forces, an expensive, unrewarding process that may lead to a wider breakdown in the middle east.

If Turkey gets the nudge it wants from NATO and other Arab countries, it can itself declare a no fly zone on Syria without much US efforts.

NATO is a much much bigger force than Russia -like it or hate it. But a war with both sides will not be a conventional war, it will most likely be a nuclear war. More than 3/4 of the entire Russian population may die in such an event. Millions of Americans and Europeans will die as well, so nobody wins. So there's no reason for both Russia and NATO to engage in direct military conflict, they are both better off resolving their differences diplomatically. This is why Putin is afraid of Georgia joining NATO, because in effect it becomes immune from Russia.

Having a faster ICBM or stronger missile defense is just like claiming "my bullet moves faster than yours", truth is it no longer matters. Americas strategy has moved from investing in military technology - that may only become subordinate once the other side comes up with something else - to building stronger alliance and global prompt response. In addition, the MAD doctrine remains in place. Develop nice ICBMs all you want, as long as the US of A has in its arsenal 15,000 kilton nuclear weapons mounted on stealthy submarines, your ICBMs wouldn't matter.

Also, as part of the MAD doctrine, there's a limit to which both sides can develop their missile technology. If either Russia or China gets too adventurous, US may consider putting anti ballistic missiles in space - it's not as if this hasn't been considered before.

America is the only country in this day and age that can declare war on any country and have its military in the battlefield within hours before the enemy has a chance to even prepare a missile launcher! Russia has only got one carrier in active service, US has got 10, each of them with super active stealthy falcons that can be taking out your missile defense radar within minutes before you even come to terms with what went wrong. Russia is currently shitting in its pants with NATO's advancement towards the east. If Ukraine and Georgia gets assigned a NATO status, Russia's military influence will be well subdued, it wouldn't matter how fast their ICBMs are.

Also I am not sure what you call superpowers by excluding UK and France and including the Chinese. The Chinese have military strength relies on the sheer number of its ground troops, but in terms of Air superiority, and naval strength, UK and France will beat the Chinese any day any time, individually, talk less of a joint action.

China sucks at war! The only reason it appeared to be a superpower is because more than a third of the whole world's population is ready to defend it. Yes it achieved it's military objectives by pushing the US troops back during the korean war, but asides from that China has had its arse kicked in almost every major conflict you can think of. Even with its huge population and Soviet co-operation, Japan still managed a successful invasion of China and the fall of Beijing in the world war 2. The same Japan that had its arsed round house kicked by Uncle Sam.

China's modern day military strength is still by troop numbers and a nuclear arsenal not technology! China can afford to put a million soldiers on the battlefield and lose 200,000 soldiers without batting an eye. This is all fine in a conventional war where you have boots on ground, but the US, Russia, Brtain and France are well past that age of warfare.

China's strategy is to protect China from invasion, but it knows it will take a huge pounding if it attempts to start a war outside of its boundary. Britain and French may have lost their empire status, but putting them down against China is a big mistake.

I think this will largely depend on how you define a war. Theoretically speaking, America has not declared a war on any country since the end of World War 2. There has been several extended military engagements authorized by Congress or the United Nations, but these are not by US legal definition a "war". The last times US declared war, it sought an unconditional surrender of the enemy. If the US declares a full scale war, i doubt if there are few superpowers in the east that can really muscle up with the yanks. Even Soviet Russia bowed when US upgraded to DEFCON 2 during the cuban missile crises when Kennedy ordered American bombers to earth orbit points, few minutes strike from Russia.

Honestly, the cold war ended long time ago - and both China and USA need to look for ways to unite the two Korea and let these people live in peace... The reason the US went to the Korean peninsula in the first place was because of the spread of communism, cold war, and the rise of China... Yeah, i get what you mean about the sabre rattling, but the situation on the peninsular is so tense at the moment, you could cut it with a knife. Anything could go wrong and things are bound to get ugly quickly from there. I don't think Kim will just wake up one morning and order a strike against South Korea or the US, but i think the efforts to put up some military muscle might lead to situations that may be quickly misinterpreted by the other side and could ignite something much bigger.

The US will not necessarily seek to use North Korea as an example, but if -and a big IF - some shyt hits the fan, the US will be pressed hard for response. Uncle Sam cannot be seen to show weakness, not especially on the doorsteps of the Chinese.

In a way, i think to the Chinese, North Korea is the quintessential unexplained paradigm- simultaneously their greatest source of strength against the west and their greatest source of weakness. You have absolutely no idea of the US military capacity.

China may have billions of soldiers, but unless they can figure a way to ship all those soldiers across the Atlantic Ocean (China has only 1 or 2 carriers by the way), they are all typical sitting ducks for the raptors and the B2 spirits.

The US does not only rely on its military might, it's got strong allies and partners who can do several things e.g block major shipping routes - a move that could make China bankrupt in less than a year. Not only does China's economy rely mostly on export to Europe and the US, it's huge population and economy require energy sources most of which passes through routes that are commanded by US allies or NATO nations.

All US bases in that part of the world are within their missile reach - and do you even know how many NK missiles are facing Seoul Best believe none of the two sides want war... That's why the Chinese are not really bothered, to be honest...

I think if anything, the Chinese are more bothered than anyone else. They know they don't have the current "Fat boy" military leader under their wraps like they did with his daddy, they also know he may be crazy enough to try some stupid shyt like striking a US military base. They know that the US WILL respond with tougher military strikes, if for anything, to satisfy internal politics and send a message to Iran as well as reassure Japan and other US allies, of US military capacity and its ability to defend its allies. I think despite US finances, its ability to print new notes and fund itself through another war should never be underestimated.

I have often said to people, the US will get any fight it wants regardless of what both Russia and China thinks. The truth is, even though both countries are strong militarily, their leaders live in constant fear of the United States military and they will prefer to make so much noise and belligerent attitude in the media lest the US starts some "democratic" movement in both their countries.

Putin's fear has always been US's intervention in Russia's internal politics, but he knows he wouldn't be dumb enough to stand in the way should the US decide they are going to get into a conflict with another country. China on the other hand has always been about self preservation -China is less concerned if the US blows another country up to bits, they will rather build a tall wall to shield themselves in and then watch the West bankrupt themselves fighting wars after wars.

In the very least, both of these countries may choose to sell top military hardware to American enemies, e.g the Russian S300s and S400s, but not only are these equipments expensive to produce in mass for an amount that may be sufficient for use, they are relatively untested in major conflicts, compared with American hardware that has been constantly tested in several conflicts within the last decade.

America still has the strongest military in the world, that is not a myth. And that military, more than anytime in its history, is currently at its highest pinnacle of fighting capabilities.

I get the fact that to each his own, but it may be necessary, for the purpose of those who stand to benefit from this argument and others who are generally willing to help make this forum more informative, to separate paranoia from facts. I don't know how much a Range Rover sells for, but asking for such an information on the autos forum will not mean that i might expect my unemployed cousin in Aba to send me a text asking me "How the family is doing".

The US will not "go out of its way" to "help" especially as it doesn't stand to gain much and I bet most of the citizens will not be in support of another military engagement at taxpayer cost. The ball is in the Arab League's court. But as they have shown us by their inaction in recent conflicts, they are nothing more than a nice-sounding name on paper.

I personally think there will be riots in the street of America should the US government decide to bankrupt the US further by sending US troops to another pointless war or get involved with one which is not of strategic importance to its interests. I think the Arab league has the military capability and the funding requirements to take action if they really want to, but i don't think this is ever going to happen. The only country that i envision might take action is Turkey. It might choose to designate a no fly zone within Syria, but to do this, it might require the approval of the United Nations or a in the very least a "go ahead" nudge from NATO members

Most people overplay Russia's reaction because Russian leaders appear belligerent by nature and people interpret this to mean strength or the lack of it from US leaders to mean fear. During the Cuban crises, Khrushchev warned the US openly that military blockade of Cuba will definitely lead to a nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States, but he then used back channels to send a message that, - in his own words; "If you coolly weigh the situation which has developed, not giving way to passions, you will understand that the Soviet Union cannot fail to reject the arbitrary demands of the United States"

The US's status as the world's most advanced military is not a myth. When the US updated its alert status to DEAFCON 2 for the first and only time in history, during the CUBAN crises, Russia knew it was outweighed, so it had to calm the f**k down!

In addition, Kremlin's reaction is quite predictable and this is what makes them less of a threat to those guys in Washington. In the worst case scenario, it may choose to sell top military hardware to America's enemies and the US will respond by placing advanced missile interceptors in Poland ....and there you have the cold war starting all over again. Actual conflict will most likely never occur since both countries realize this will mean annihilation of their own citizens, all for what?

pro01: Now that the "Red Line" has been crossed, let's see what the United States/NATO have up their sleeves. How Assad has managed to hang on to power this long is beyond me. Why hasn't he been given the Gaddafi treatment - even though his atrocities are a million times worse than Gaddafi's? I don't see this as the hypocrisy of the West. Should the West decide to go into Syria, they would have to commit military resources in terms of occupational forces that is not only expensive but becomes a drain. Syria is not the same as Libya where you could go in and be out in 3 months, Syria's situation has descended far beyond that. Additionally, unlike in Libya where you have a well coordinated opposition with a common enemy, in Syria, there are just two many groups, all with different goals/objectives.

It's the best thing for the US to stay out of Syria and let the Arab league handle the situation.

The US hardly gives a shyt about what Russia thinks. If the US decides to carry out military campaign in Syria, it will do so regardless of what Russia says. In the very least, relations between both countries will be harmed and Russia may stop cooperating with the US on other issues like Iran and North Korea, but that said, Russia will not be foolish enough to strike a US target.

The average Nigerian is a Cave Man. Crude, unrefined, violent and ignorant. You see someone on the street and the first thing that comes to mind is mob lynching? And our society permits of this? Why are we such a sick group of people?

The other day i was at a park somewhere in central London and i can see squirrels running around the park in their dozens freely and happily. It makes for such a beautiful sight! In my country such happy creatures dare not venture out carelessly in the daytime less they appear on someone's plate at dinnertime. If humans cannot live freely in their society, how much more animals? The black man's race is terribly cursed! Who knows how soon it will be before Nigerian's start hunting themselves for food? It's all in the Cave Man's gene and his society permits of this!
