I'm just seeing this story now and the picture and I am in serious shock because I KNOW THIS GUY. We grew up in the same denomination as teenagers and he was a very committed christian. We didn't see for a long time until October 2008 at the wedding of one of a friend we both grew up with as teens. We saw again in 2009 at the wedding of another member of our teens fellowship back then. And this morning, a member of our teens fellowship from back then called me and told me about this story. I don't even understand how he could do any of these things from beating his wife to eventually killing her. This is so so sad and just teaches that if we don't deal with "small" issues we have (anger, lust, etc) they can graduate to murder, and many other things and take us places we never thought we could go. God save us all |
I've read many views on this issue of Islamic Banking in Nigeria. I can see many fears, perceptions and views and I'd like to add a few lines of my own. Let me state the following upfront (1) I am a Christian (2) I think Sanusi is a lousy and terrible CBN Governor. I will however do my best to ensure that none of these views unnecessarily color the opinions I want to state. (1) I do not see anything wrong with the CBN promoting Islamic Banking. Nigeria has a huge muslim population and if the way banking is done is a very important thing to Muslims, then I think we should find a framework that accomodates their concerns and makes them happy as long as it doesn't affect the rights of other citizens. (2)I believe that since Islamic Banking is just one form of non-interest banking, the CBN should have a committee that regulates the the non-interest banking business. This committee should be made up of both Christians and non-Christians. For the islamic banking component however, the regulation should be done by Muslims with knowledge of both Islamic principles and financial/economic principles drawn from both the North and South of Nigeria. (3)I believe that most of the dust being raised on this issue is not because of Islamic Banking per say but because of the person of Sanusi. Sanusi is an extremist and comes across as someone who doesn't care about other points of view. Again the issue here is more about ethnicity than it is about religion. I am most certain that if Sanusi was a Southern Muslim, there wouldn't be this much noise. The fact remains that most Christians perceive Northern Muslims to be extremists and expansionists. Christians have lived in peace with Muslims in the South. Southern Muslims come to church when we have burial ceremonies and they are welcome. I am sure (correct me if I'm wrong) that I can go with a Muslim friend to a mosque in the South here just to experience the Muslim way of worship and go back home alive and with all my limbs intact. On the other hand if I decide to visit a Mosque in the North, that may very well be the end of my life. (4) Sanusi is doing this (like everything he does) the wrong way. It is clear he doesn't think more than one step at a time. If I were CBN governor, I'd have seen that this issue of Islamic Banking will generate furore especially around this time when we've had loads of Christian / Muslim clashes in the North and with the Boko-Harm issue that paints Muslims (unfairly) in bad light. Based on that, I'd ensure that all communication on this Islamic Banking issue is done by another CBN executive that does not have the perception baggage that Sanusi has. The truth is that Christians have seen the undue politicization of Sharia in the North and so have a lot of trust issues believing someone like Sanusi on something that has Islamic undertone. While I do not see any reasons why Christians should be afraid or deny Muslims their "rights" to Islamic Banking, I think Sanusi needs to act with maturity. By saying, nothing can ever change this or that, you create unnecessary tension. And by so doing, he has made a good idea look bad. Sanusi should rise above himself and reach out to the groups who feels afraid or aggrieved and ASSURE them. If he has to postpone implementation by a few months, so be it. Eventually, the problem is not islamic Banking per se, but the poor management skills of Sanusi and the mistrust that many Nigerians have, not for Muslims, but for Northern Muslims. Christian leaders on the other hand should stop being paranoid about everything Islam. |
ekt_bear:My dear Sir, I believe it is possible for you to like Tinubu without defending everything he does; just as it is possible to dislike him without finding fault with everything he does. Recently, most of your posts on Tinubu and ACN are almost on the level of blind support. You have almost started playing in the same intellectual slime pit as Eko-Ile. You, my dear sir, are better than that. |
Awolowo contested to be President of Nigeria and that alone means any Nigerian (any body for that matter) can make comments on issues about him. It is small-mindedness for ektbear to tell EzeUche not to comment because he is Igbo. That is the sort of low-life mentality that I'm shocked exists in the minds of otherwise intelligent people on NL. I am not Igbo. I am not Yoruba. But I believe all of these "Igbo this" and "Yoruba that" is just plain childish. |
ekt_bear:I used to like the brilliance of some of the stuff you've written on NL. Now I know you were just writing with borrowed sense and you have none of your own. |
Kobojunkie:Are you from Anambra Central Senatorial District? Did you even vote in the elections that brought him in? |
El-Rufai always says the truth sometimes. He once said Buhari had nothing to offer Nigerians. I believe him. |
enyojo:And I guess since you dumped GEJ, he has been having sleepless nights and calling you on the phone every night to support him abi. (a case of delusions of grandeur). Anyways, I think Ngige is probably missing PDP. If he's feeling lonely in ACN and desires to go back to PDP, he should say so instead of giving unsolicited advice |

I visit the politics section every day to read people's views and to also have a good laugh. In the process, I have found myself admiring some guys here and also put off by others. Here's MY LIST of the politics section's heroes and villains. HEROES (1) BEAF: I just love this guy's tenacity and strength of purpose. You cannot be neutral about Beaf. You either love him or hate him. When he has good points, he knows how to drive them in very well. And when he knows he cannot win an argument, he knows how to twist his way through by distracting from the argument. If you give him crap, get ready for crap times 100. Beaf, you make my day and though I do not always agree with you, I always look forward to reading stuff you write (2)JAKUMO: This dude is smart and intelligent. Just that he uses too many swear words. But I love how he can make very serious points laced with humour (3) GBAWE: This is an analyst's analyst. He knows how to bring a new angle to any discussion . He can be passionate about what he's talking about without being offensive. I only wonder why he doesn't like my number one man, BEAF the DON (4)ODUNNU: She would make a good wife for Beaf as they seem to agree on almost everything. She can be serious in a funny way and rarely uses swear or bad words. VILLAINS (1) YSTRANGER OR ZSTRANGER: Men, whoever this guy is, I wonder how he's able to type the kind of stuff he types and still sleeps well at night. This guy types really hateful stuff as if he has no soul. (2)KOBOJUNKIE: If there's anybody that can argue just for the sake of it, then it's kobojunkie. She knows how to say a lot of unintelligent things using intelligent words. (3) EZEUCHE: This guy has a victim's mentality. I hate the ethnic bashing that goes on here on Nairaland. But even the Jews who were killed by hitler in their millions do not have the victim's mentality that this guy exudes. (4)TEXAZPETTE: Texaz is a very very smart dude but he is too opinionated and sometimes takes things too personal, He tends to see everything from one angle and I've NEVER seen him change his mind on anything on NL. Even Beaf who is opinionated has been known to change his mind a few times in the face of superior logic. NL rocks because of you guys. Keep it up(except Zstranger and KoboJunkie: Please change your ways). |
Gbawe and others, I must admit that your posts have been very very enlightening for me. While I come to NL to get some laughs from the funny and snide remarks, I also make it a point of duty to read almost anything posted by Gbawe and Jarus. Even though I didn't vote for your candidate(I voted GEJ), I have always enjoyed the calmness and level-headed intelligence with which Gbawe makes his points. And thanks to you guys for totally ignoring KoboJunkie in your discussions. GOD bless you guys for carrying on as if she doesn't exist. |
aisha2:Thanks Aisha2 for showing that you are a good-hearted Nigerian. Even though I know that, from your posts, you support Buhari, you have refused to allow that affect your sense of judgement on this issue. Wadeoye:Wadeoye, there is no difference between your attitude and that of our desperate politicians who are bringing in arms and ammunition in order to "swing votes". You want to whip up ethnic sentiments based on a wrong conclusion from an innocent story to swing votes. Nigeria cannot be great with this kind of mindset. bk.babe97y:This is really really low. This is the kind of attitude we do not want in our new Nigeria. Please change your ways. |
Kobo junkie, please see below: "The idea of developing rapid transit in Nigeria dates from the1980s with the Lagos Metroline network conceived by the Alhaji Lateef Jakande during the Nigerian Second Republic The initialMetroline project was scrapped in 1985 by Muhammadu Buhari at a loss of over $78 million to the Lagos taxpayers." If this is true, it is very bad. But I'd like to see this story in any of the main stream news publications. I have long since stopped believing in the trash that Saharareporters call journalism. I am still neutral on this. |
I hope you also know that Lagos State had to pay about 60% of that sum as penalties for backing out(and the back out penalty was priced in dollars). That makes absolutely no sense to me. Why should I pay 60% to get nothing when I could have paid 100% and enjoyed a lot of benefits? Whoever gave Buhari this excuse is clearly not thinking. |

texazzpete:I get your point texazzpete. However, it is important to point out that the anti-sanusi camp should be honest enough to applaud him when he does something right while the pro-sanusi camp should be honest enough to say the truth when Sanusi takes a hasty and ill-thought out step. It's clear you belong to the pro-sanusi camp and I think you should be honest enough to point out that Sanusi needs to show us that there is a link between Corporate Governance and Bank CEO tenures. Let's be a little empirical here. Strong organizations like GE had Jack Welch at the helm of affairs for 20 years. Let's even go back to Sanusi's first bank. The late Sam Asagbia was CEO for far more than 10 years. I personally do not see the sense in this tenure-limiting directive because what Sanusi hopes to achieve can be done without it. |
Let's assume Sanusi is a sincere man and means well, it still doesn't change the fact that he is unnecessarily hasty and dramatic. We have had enough drama in the Nigerian financial markets to last us 10 years. Drama can take the attention of people away from their suffering for a while. In 1789 the Paris mobs cheered as heads fell into the baskets and for a while forgot that bread was still too expensive to buy. If the Super Eagles cant do it, why not a spectacular announcement like limiting bank CEO's tenure. The mob loves the sight of blood because it makes them feel better even though they are still broke and hungry. I would rather see some economic growth quite frankly and not all these drama. |
