The wish of late Thompson Oliha to rest in peace seems a dream too far going by dramatic events that unfolded yesterday during his burial ceremony here in the ancient city of Benin. After the lying-in-state held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, which featured a novelty match between selected former Eagles teammates and the Kwara Football Academy, his place of last appointment, not a few persons who proceeded to his Upper Sakponba residence for the interment, had a premonition of the confusion that was to come. After the convoy of vehicles navigated through the traffic-littered roads of Benin and got to the house built by the former Super Eagles midfielder, the drama of what to come started unfolding as the mourners, comprising family members, ex-teammates, friends and relatives disembarked to discover that the grave for the deceased was close to the toilet outside the premises. Late Thompson Oliha Shocked and bewildered with what they saw, some friends and relatives objected to the burial place. They said that Benin tradition was against burying a man who had properties outside his compound. They smelt foul-play and accused the immediate brothers and sisters of attempting to play a smart one on the wives and children left behind by Oliha, who they said deserved to be buried in one of the rooms built by him as a mark of respect or better still in the front corridor. They said that they were not going to allow Oliha’s brothers have their way on the grave, demanding that the already dug grave be closed while a new one be dug in the front corridor. As the diggers were closing the grave, a mild fracas broke out as the eldest sons of Oliha family, Ayo, came out to direct that the diggers discontinue the closing up of the grave. But the protesting friends and relatives threatened to deal with him should he carry out the order, insisting that the Benin tradition on burial of men with properties be respected. Ayo Oliha, in a final attempt to have his way, told the protesters that the decision to bury Thompson at the back side of his house was well thought-out. He explained that the family plans to build a tombstone later so that people can visit him to pay their respects. But one of the protesters fired back that the tombstone would even look better and command more attention of people in the front corridor. He alleged that the earlier plan to bury Oliha close to the toilet outside the premises was for family members to have opportunity to dispose off the property of the deceased. “If we allow you to bury him outside, you people will sell this house and that would not be good for the wives and kids that he left behind. But as he is going to be buried here, this house is secured from any sale because nobody buys a house where the owner was buried in Benin,” said Modecia Isibor, Thompson Oliha’s best friend . As these scenes were unfolding, the two women who had children for the former Eagles midfielder were sobbing. They knew that the fight was for them. Isibor said that Oliha had four houses in Nigeria, wondering why a man with such properties would be buried in such a manner. “In Benin City, he had two houses, he had one in Lagos and he was already building another one in Ilorin, before he died on June 30”, he said. In the heat of the raging storm, the Oliha family beat a retreat and a new grave was dug in the front corridor where Oliha was buried at 6.30 p.m. amidst tears and wailing yesterday. Another friend of the deceased, alleged that the Oliha’s family were already demaning for the release of the landed documents of the former Bendel Insurance player. “I do not know why they want the documents. I guess they want to sell his properties but after this burial, I would run away and they would not see me again. We have to secure the future of this young children and wives he left behind”, he said. It was learnt that the late Oliha did not legalise his union with his two wives, a development that has made them object of target by the Oliha clan. One friend said that Oliha’s biggest mistake was his failure to legalise his union with his two women, Ajara and Iris, both of whom were seen with their kids yesterday. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/confusion-breaks-out-at-olihas-funeral/ |

Demdem: List of ASUU demandAll the uninformedd Nairalanders among us on this read: please read this and stop the unguarded statements! |
McLuhan: To put it midly, your post is full of untruths, inexactitudes, and non sequiturs. All the uninformed contributors to this thread, this is for you! It sure will help you to understand why the issues at hand are grave, and why you need to be informed before you contribute! |
Waiting for the mod to correct the acroynm in the title of this thread. The academic body being refered to is 'ASUU' (Academic Staff Union of Universities'; not ASSU - whatever that means. Thanks. |
tomzman: In saner climes, the minister of labour would have been sacked by now. The guy doesn't think before talking. That was how he said in January last year that the government doesn't defer to the wishes of people. How can you say the government 'inherited' an agreement! Isn't there meant to be continuity in govt? If it were benefits that concerned him as the minister, would he refuse them because it was signed by the previous administration? Only divine intervention can save this country!Great words! |
amacastel: . Foreign lectures won't sale handout, sortout, miss class give impromptu quiz and assignment without teaching, sexually harass our female students, for payment check google u will see that nigeria lectures are among the best paid in Africa and some part of world yet they teach less and demand more if govt equip labs with less concerned lectures is as gud as the same the problem of our educational system is our lectures 1st b4 govt cos I went to sch of nursing here in nigeria u need to see how th lectures teach ,no hand out or sort out nobody sexually harass u wen u read u pass if u don't u are eliminated bt wen I got admission in unec 4 ma post bsc I am shock on wot I saw even the final year nursing student have not cover their syllabus theoretically so with other department yet they issue certificate to half baked graduates even 1st class to the most dumb student cos of money nigeria lectures are worse than politicians DO our lectures need lab to teach in class room let dem do their hom work 1st.I quietly withdraw soon I wil leave to uk to complete ma studies. ASUU don't Deserve dime from govt cos they won't use it 4 sch rada they will embezzle the fund periodYou need to work hard on your grammar to justify the good things you have said about the school of nusrsing you said you went in which you had such fantastic teachers. |
datChelseaBoy: This ASUU too dey give trouble sefAre you familiar with the issues on ground? |
Alenkakent: See these fools praising tb Joshua ooo... No b there you dey? You go soon believe when ibori comes back and he's set free... Naija for sure... Anything is fckn possibleYou do not have the right to call people who share a different opinion about T.B. Joshua fools unless you are one yourself! Unless you are not properly schooled in the principles of tolerance, or are a 16th century eskimo goat, you need to know that life is about learning to allow people express their own opinion. That opinion need not be the same as yours. That anything is possible in Nigeria is not a fact we need people like you to tell us, but civility, tolerance and proper home training is what you need! |
donbenard: this tb joshua of a prophet na wao gradually going beyond the crest the funy tin his prophecies may come to pass i will never believe wen a prophet leave the things of GOD and predict football matches politics and other tin not relating to the growth of our faith then most certainly there is sometin questionable about him i simply put it as the bible say men will rise do wonders perform miracles to deceive the elect am not trying to undermine any prophet but see tins for yourselves adolebenard123@gmail.comThis is your opinion, and you sure have a right to it like everyone else who do not believe in the half-truths contained in this so-called 'report'! |
Phonon: This T.B. Joshua is becoming something else..........Who is this guy really? This report all seems cooked up to me. Someone in this thread called it "tales by moonlight". I call it the apotheosis of yellow journalism. Only the non-discerning will be taken in by it, and begin to take it out on a man you don't even know his side of the matter. That something is in the news does not make it credible for us to take it out on Prophet T.B. Joshua. For all I care this story is all made up simply because Al Mustapha paid a visit to T.B. Joshua soon after his release. Did you not read the reasons Al Mustapha gave for the visit, which T.B. Joshua himself confirmed to the media? Let's stop passing judgement or condemning when we have no proofs! |
torres2: then who regulate the private uni? Another commission abi? There cert isn't B.Sc abiThat's the point! The NUC also regulates them. But don't forget that the laws establishing them are not quitethe same laws establishing the state or federal universities. The fees they charge are "private" to them and some of their owners don't affiliate with trade unions for very obvious reasons! |
Today's meeting is already doomed to fail. Read my lips.it will be all jaw jaw and nothing will come out. FG just wants to tell the Nigerian public that it is "on top of the situation" of the ASUU strike. |
ASSU made the said agreement and forced government to sign it through strike during YARADUA'S tenure. It is crazy asking for a whooping 93Billion yearly allowance. The moment the FG approve it the states uni will ask for same and Students will be the once to pay for ASSU greed.[/quote]I'm glad you said 'ASSU' and not 'ASUU', because the ASUU I know did not make any agreement and "forced" a whole federal government to sign it! But you've introduced an innovation though: that it is possible to make an agreement and "force" the federal govt to sign it. Quite soon I should form a union and force the federal government to sign all the oil fields of Bayelsa to me! You clearly don't know the issues at stake.I recommend you go and do a catch up. Thank God it is 'ASSU' that is asking for "a whooping 93 billion yearly allowance" and not ASUU! |
highlandre: Why should state unis be involved in this ASUU strike? ASUU chapters at state universitites should not unduly subject students to this selfish strike as the breach of agreement between FG and federal varsities has no direct impact on state universities' lecturersYou're the one who is trying to be selfish and ignorant here! State universities are part of the Nigerian university system. They are regulated by the same National Universities Commission, and they are part of ASUU. The strike is also their strike, just as a degree earned from a state university is equivalent to a degree earned in a federal university. You're therefore wrong in assuming that this is a battle between "FG" and "federal varsities", and that the breach of agreement will not impact on state owned universities. In Nigeria, we have ONLY ONE university system, whether the university is owned by the state or by the federal government. In electing to renege on an agreement it freely entered into with ASUU, it is the FG that should be held accountable, not the expectations of university lecturers, whether you consider them to be selfish or not! |
But what still baffles me is why a government would freely enter into an agreement and at the end fail to honour it. Doesn't smack of responsibility at all! That this is not the first time it is happening simply annoys me! For how long shall we continue to toy with the future of our youths in such recklessly irresponsible manner? |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an another indefinite strike following the failure of the federal government to implement part of the 2009 agreement reached by the two parties. The union’s demands include upward review of retirement age for Professors from 65 to 70, adequate funding to revitalise the university system, progressive increase of budgetary allocations to education by 26 per cent, transfer of Federal Government property to universities, setting up of research and development units by companies, payment of earned allowances and renegotiation of the signed agreement More to follow.... http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ASUU-embarks-on-indefinite-strike/152086/ |

Oh Majek! It will not be sunset yet! It can't be over! Righteousness will still cover the earth! Oh what talent!

My country never ceases to amaze me! A few weeks ago, the president set up what some of his supporters considered as a "powerful committee" whose top mandate was to dialogue with Boko Haram, the deadly Islamic sect, with a view to offering them amnesty. (The leaders of the sect have, however, reportedly been insisting that they don't need amnesty; that it is indeed the federal government itself that needs to be granted amnesty!) Now, we are hearing from the leader of the committee that they don't even know who has links to the insurgents! I thought the membership of the committe was carefully thought out by Mr President, after "wide consultations", and for them to be looking for those who have "links" to the terrorists at this time baffles me! Are we in for another jamboree in the name of "finding lasting peace?" Are these people really serious, and is this committe not doomed to fail like most people who are against granting amnesty to Boko Haram have predicted? Anyway, the report: KADUNA — The Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in Northern Nigeria had no clue on how to meet the leadership of the Boko Haram insurgents, the Chairman of the Committee and Minister of Special Duties, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, said yesterday. Turaki pleaded for help in this regards from willing members of the public or anyone with links to the terrorists to initiate the dialogue process. He spoke when he led members of his committee on a courtesy visit to Governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Yero of Kaduna State at Government House, yesterday. According to him: “We want anybody that may have link with some of these people to direct us to ease the process of dialogue in such a way that will ensure transparency and honesty which are the hall mark of this committee. We on our own have no clue on how to meet any of their leaders. “The committee is in Kaduna State as part of its nationwide tour; particularly in the affected areas for the purpose of enhancing consultation.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/05/we-dont-know-how-to-meet-boko-haram-leadership-minister/ |
Mod, update the scoreline now! I'm sure it's 1-1. |
ABUJA -The National Judicial Council, NJC, Friday, wielded the big stick against Justice Abubakar Talba of an Abuja High Court, after he was found guilty of handing an “unreasonable” sentence to a self confessed pension thief, John Yakubu Yusufu. The Council, Friday, suspended the embattled trial Judge for one year, saying he should not be entitled to any form of remuneration within the period. Talba had on January 28, directed Yusufu to pay a fine of N750, 000, shortly after the accused person who was a former Deputy Director in the pension office, admitted before the trial court that he conspired with six other civil servants and stole about N23billion from the Police Pension Fund. Though section 309 of the Criminal Procedure Act, CPA, upon which the accused person was charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, gave the court the choice of sentencing the accused to a maximum of two years imprisonment with a fine, however, Justice Talba, used his discretion and ordered Yusufu to only pay fine and go home. Meantime, following public outcry and a petition that was filed by the Anti-Corruption Network, led by a former member of the House of Representatives, Dino Melaye, NJC, summoned Justice Talba, and ordered him to file his defence to the allegation that he was bribed by the convicted pension thief. Though Talba blatantly denied his alleged convivial relationship with Yusufu, however, the NJC, in a press statement it issued Friday, found him culpable, accusing him of judicial recklessness. Consequently, the Council handed him a one year suspension without pay, maintaining that he failed to exercise his discretion judicially and judiciously. Music sensation and first MTN Project Fame winner, Iyanya, has opened up on his purported relationship with beautiful star actress, Yvonne Nelson. In an interview with PM News, he affirms that Yvonne is his "hommie" and that Yvonne's reported tweets on a man cheating on her could not have been directed at him. He also denies claims that he has something with Nollywood bad girl, Tonto Dikeh, describing Tonto as his "paddi". People, are we in a season of celebrity denials, having just recently read about Nollywood bad boy, Jim Iyke, denying having something with Nadia Buari with whom he has been caught in several suggestive poses lately? http://.mobi/output.php?id=8468 |

The website design is great! It clearly establishes a headstart for other military structures in the country which have never been known to give high premium to web design due to poor vision. There is a professional touch to this one, and it is considerably user-friendly. Hope it would fulfil the mission of its principals. |
Abuja – The Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr Mohammed Abubakar, says that obtaining police permit for the use of vehicles with tinted glasses “is free of charge and does not attract any charge”. Abubakar made the clarification on Friday while speaking at a meeting with Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of the 12 zonal commands in Nigeria. The IG said: “obtaining tinted glass permit is free of charge, there is no amount of money written there for anybody to pay. “Motorists should not allow any policeman, anywhere to subject them to paying charges that are not officially, legally and legitimately stated,’’ Abubakar stated. The clarification of the IG comes against the backdrop of renewed clampdown on motorists driving vehicles with tinted glasses nationwide. Motorists in the country have been lamenting that the police have been charging between N10,000 and N50,000 to grant the tinted permits, wondering whether the money actually goes into the coffers of the Federal Government. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/obtaining-tinted-glass-permit-is-free-says-ig/ |

Why do some of us want to remain perpetually ignorant? We FINISH WRITING our exams and we call it GRADUATION.Utter foolishness! A student graduates when he or she has satisfied all the academic requirements prescibed by the institution and is adjudged to be worthy of character. The scripts of many of these students have not even been opened by their examiners nor have they been adjudged to have passed their examinations and they're jumping into a 16th century Eskimo he/she-goat frenzy in the name of celebrating a GRADUATION! Several years after all this madness many of these students still find themselves in school doing extension and writing courses they failed. We need to slow down; we do not need to make fools of ourselves! The proper time to call ourselves GRADUATES is when we have our certificates in our hands and even when we need to commemorate the completion of our programmes (before the results are released) we need moderation and decorum. |
ignis: What have we learnt from the score line? That the team that played had resilience and were dogged; that we do not need to write our national teams off even before the kick of the ball just because they have been underperforming; that we can only get the Super Eagles we deserve by the kind of support we give them; that with proper focus, dedication and commitment, the Eagles will become really supper again, ready to take on teams we think are invincible because of the big names they parade... |
naturalwaves: That's true....the MODS are not doing a good job atall. They move topics to the Front page without cross checking them. The funny thing is that Mukina and Seun sees every topic before they decide to put them on the front page. These guys really need to improve. It shouldn't be all about the traffic."Mukina and Seun SEES every topic..." Do you see your own concord error? You should be flawless too! |
