Shadow boxing may seem harmless, until an imaginary enemy is projected. Then, the dark human instincts are revealed: cruelty, desperation and vindictiveness.
If the shadow boxer is fortunate to have quick reflexes to duck and weave like Iron Mike Tyson, the exercise can feel like a real bout with a real opponent. But in the end, it's just shadow boxing – a combat with oneself. And while the shadow boxer pants and sweats, the imaginary enemy is somewhere “flexing” and having the time of their life.

This compelling scenario illustrates the current media trial of Udom Emmanuel, the immediate former Governor of Akwa Ibom State. The vicious and tortured images of his enemies, pounding the air with hateful fists in a mad rage to inflict injury on him while he lies supine in absolute peace is comforting.

These hateful conspirators are more to be pitied. Udom Emmanuel is a giant slayer. It's puzzling, shameful, and indicative of indolence and cognitive dissonance that they miss this fact. Udom's successes in both politics and the corporate community are overwhelming, enough to reset biases and bigotry, whether acquired, genetic, or transacted. However, his pursuers seem to have the minds of a mud.

This reminders still sizzles. Udom’s reelection campaign of 2019 was a classic David vs Goliath pairing. The giant as usual was both impressive in aggression and reach. To underscore his readiness, the giant had brashly dubbed the duel “Warsaw Saw War,” The eerie and somber caption was a reckless call to arms. There was war indeed, but in the end, Udom triumphed, leaving the opposition camps completely emasculated and bloodied.

Perhaps, Udom’s greatest misfortunes is being perceived as an underdog. But even that works to his advantage. He likes to remain small and innocuous. But by God, he is a towering brobdingnagian fellow!

“Yes, he may not look intimidating and threatening, but he is not only courageous, but a great strategist.” Said Emmanuel Enoidem, SAN, in the book “Umo Eno, And IT Came To Pass” authored by Anietie Usen. Ambassador Assam Assam, the great legal luminary would double down. “He doesn’t look bullish and is not a tough talker who could say “who born dog “ but he is a child of grace and grace is enough,”

But his enemies disagree. How can a man so tempered in visage and mien, decimate his enemies so completely and fatally, column after column? How does a man not intimidating in posture, yet so simple and nimble in his fists, pack such devastating punches?

The shadow boxers and the masquerades must have memories like sieves.
The consequence of which, to put mildly, is both tragic and disturbing. They were the same people who brought knives to a fist fight against Udom Emmanuel in 2019, and lost. They brought the “federal might” and that failed too. Now, they have their eyes set on another election cycle in the faraway 2027. This desperation speaks to the fact that, the wicked is perpetually restless.

In all this, one can’t help but feel a twinge of pity for the reckless masquerade recruits, stirring controversies in the social media. They seem utterly oblivious to the cautionary warnings embedded in the songs of the legendary Fuji musician, Obesere: "Egungun be careful, na express you de go." They are tone deaf.

As it stands, the likes of Fejiro, the lead masquerade, and his shadowy cohorts, who are bonded in a fealty of blackmail and mischief, are attention seekers who have lost their way.
Deacon Udom Emmanuel in his time as governor, if anything, was a shining example of transparency and accountability. Therefore, the ongoing media attacks on him are not only baseless and reprehensible, but likely to have as much impact as a drop of rain on a sunny day.

“The much I have known Mr. Udom Emmanuel,” wrote Ini Ememobong recently in a riposte to the ongoing media trial of his former boss, “I am certain that an attack like this shouldn't surprise him, having risen to the enviable height of a Governor and reigned for eight years against the wishes of powerful godfathers and co-aspirants”

The fact remains that Udom Emmanuel, whether or not, he is in the eyes of the storm is the coolest gentleman yet. A man of unusual courage.
During the stormy days of gubernatorial elections in 2023, Governor Umo Eno, then a candidate, having been besieged by lies from the opposition camps and put under undue pressure, decided he had had enough and went to see his godfather, Udom Emmanuel. He told him, Sir, let me step down and from this thing and Udom looked at him and say, “have you eaten today. Let’s go get something to eat,”

If he was under pressure too, he didn’t show it. A great man, like the chameleon, does not alter his dignified walking steps though the bush burns.

So, to the shadow boxers and masquerades, one would want to ask, “have you eaten today?” Because, frankly, the Udom Emmanuel you are picketing is a long-distance athlete. Have you eaten?

With the new year message from Distinguished Senator Ita Enang, on the barrage of attacks against both the incumbent and immediate past Governors of Akwa Ibom State, it is now becoming clearer than daylight, that the big masquerades are gradually emerging from the forest of oblivion.

Senator Ita Enang has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for over three decades, holding various positions, including serving as a Councilor, Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, a three-term member of the House of Representatives, a one-term Senator, and a Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters and Niger Delta Affairs. While his long tenure in public office is undeniable, the real question is whether his presence has translated into tangible benefits for his constituents. That, however, is a matter between him and his people.

For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Ita Enang should serve as a perfect example to students of politics on how not to be a public servant. His political trajectory is one marked by desperation for power rather than a commitment to public service.

He first served in the House of Representatives for two terms from 1999 to 2007. In 2007, he sought the Senate seat but lost in the primaries to Senator Effiong Bob. Instead of accepting defeat, he returned to Abuja, used his political maneuvering, and came back with the PDP ticket for the House of Representatives—a position he never initially contested for. He went on to secure a third term in the House, denying his kinsman, Dr. Henry Archibong of that opportunity.

In 2011, he finally found himself pushed into the Senate. However, his performance—whether good or bad—was not enough to earn him a second term. During the 2015 election season, as a PDP member, he supported President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election and also backed Udom Emmanuel, the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate. Yet, when he failed to secure the PDP Senate nomination, he defected to the APC, shifting his allegiance to Umana Umana, who was running against Udom Emmanuel.

This pattern of political opportunism was rewarded. He secured a presidential appointment as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate). Whether his performance in this role was commendable or not is open to debate, especially given the controversies of budget padding and missing budget documents that characterized legislative affairs under his watch. Eventually, in 2019, he was reassigned to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs as SSA on Niger Delta Affairs—a move widely regarded in political parlance as a soft landing. It is instructive to note that throughout that period of his service as an office boy in Abuja, Chief Ita did nothing other than assuring that the Ikot Ekpene-Itu-Odukpani Highway project will be completed each year beginning from 2016. It was not until 2022, when the tenure was winding down, that he came back to start campaigning across the State for his Governorship ambition, that he started insisting that the project was stalled by the Udom Emmanuel administration. “If Udom Emmanuel had agreed to bring money for us to pay compensation to property owners, the federal government would have executed the road project,” he roared from one radio station to the other. Of course Akwa Ibom people are not dumb and would not buy into that skewed mental maneuvering. He could not even secure a nomination from his party as he watched his cookies crumble like a pack of cards, in favour of Akanimo Udofia.

Now, with the dust around the 2023 elections settled and Akwa Ibom’s political landscape calm, Ita Enang has sauntered in with his archaic and crude rhetoric. His involvement in the ongoing political discourse—especially regarding petitions against Governor Umo Eno and former Governor Udom Emmanuel—raises suspicions about his true motivations. While his direct involvement in the frivolous petitions remain unconfirmed, his sudden reappearance and media outbursts suggest a calculated effort to insert himself into the political conversation.

For a man who has held power for over three decades, one would expect him to bring forth a truck load of achievements, highlighting his contributions to governance. Instead, his legacy appears to be one of relentless political manipulations and self-preservation, begging the question of, where lies in his lexicon, the principle of “second address” outside politics? As a trained lawyer, one would expect that he could return to active practice, running his now defunct’Ibom Chambers’, which he once operated before being submerged in politics. Instead, his insatiable appetite for power has completely drowned his professional background.

The reality is that the former senator’s political influence has significantly weaned. Even within the APC, his party holds no basis in Akwa Ibom State. The party has no functional office, and has no record of any meeting since the 2023 elections.

If Enang were truly committed to public service, he would be engaging the people of Akwa Ibom with evidence of his achievements rather than launching media attacks against those who have served the state diligently. Instead of using the current political climate as an opportunity for self-reinvention, he has resorted to old tactics of political scheming and baseless accusations.

Senator Ita Enang’s career serves as a cautionary tale for young politicians. His pattern of political survival at all costs, without tangible developmental impact, is a stark reminder of what leadership should not be. Politics should be about service, impact, and legacy, not a lifelong struggle to cling to power.

Today, while Akwa Ibom moves forward, Ita Enang remains trapped in the past, still seeking relevance in a political landscape that has largely moved on without him. His desperation is evident, but history will judge whether his decades in power amounted to true service or mere political endurance.

A genuine leader is one who sets an agenda that allows people from all walks of life to assess their performance. Governor Umo Eno is a shining example of this leadership style. In an era where many leaders shroud their administrations in secrecy, Governor Umo Eno has taken a bold step by opening his doors wide and sharing his scorecard with the public.

His achievements are visible for everyone to see, from constructing roads and remodeling primary health centers to building model schools and empowering youths. He has also ensured the payment of gratuities, demonstrating his commitment to the welfare of his people. What's more impressive is that he has continued to deliver on his promises, even when many thought he had forgotten.

The recently concluded Exco Ministerial Briefings is a testament to his dedication to accountability. As he aptly put it, "We must ensure transparency... You should be ready to be audited at any time by any group of persons because we must ensure transparency." This commitment to transparency is evident in his administration's efforts to make financial information accessible to the public.

As renowned leader Stephen Covey once said, "Trust, honesty, humility, transparency, and accountability are the building blocks of a positive reputation". Governor Umo Eno's leadership style is a breath of fresh air, and his commitment to transparency and accountability is a quality that every leader should strive for.

The wrongful disengagement of Engr. Aniekan Paddy Ukpe from the service of the Nigeria Railway Corporation was yesterday, overturned by the Senate. Nigeria's apex legislature equally ordered immediate reinstatement of Engr. Ukpe back to the corporation, complete with all his entitlements and emoluments accumulated over the said period.

The reinstatement of Engr. Aniekan Paddy Ukpe followed a resolution of the Senate Committee on Code of Conduct, Ethics and Public Petitions over a petition presented by Senator Ekong Sampson, representing Akwa Ibom South, on behalf of Ukpe.

Until his wrongful termination from service, Engr. Ukpe, who hails from Edemaya in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, was a Senior Zonal/District Engineer, covering Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue and Plateau States in the North Central region of Nigeria, at the Nigeria Railway Corporation.

Engr. Ukpe was purportedly sacked from the service of the Nigeria Railway Corporation in November, 2022, after he reported, pushed for arrest and prosecution of vandals who specialized in removing rail tracks and selling them off at exorbitant prices along the KM 8112 Kamuru Station in, Kafanchan, Kaduna, which fell within his area of supervision. His patriotic efforts ironically, met the ire of some officials in higher authority and culminated in his eventual disengagement.

Concerned over the ill treatment of his constituent, Senator Ekong Sampson on 20th July, 2023, presented a petition on behalf of Engr. Aniekan Ukpe on the floor of the Senate, calling on the Red Chamber to intervene for Ukpe's immediate reinstatement. The petition was referred to the Committee on Code of Conduct Ethics and Public Petitions.

After series of sittings and hearings, which Senator Sampson personally made sure that he attended in amplification of the case; as well as a review of submissions from both the petitioner and the respondent, the Committee made its final decision which was laid before the Senate, yesterday. The Committee found the termination of service of Engr. Ukpe from the Nigeria Railway Corporation, illegal, and called for his reinstatement with benefits.

The Senate, after considering the report of the Committee presented by the Chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen (Edo South), resolved and directed the Nigeria Railway Corporation to immediately reinstate Engr. Aniekan Paddy Ukpe, with his full entitlement. The Senate equally mandated its Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure the Railway Corporation complied with the directive.

Senator Ekong Sampson has continued to show strong commitment to the affairs of his constituents. Just a fortnight ago, he had presented two more petitions for constituents bothering on alleged wrongful dismissal from service of the Nigeria Police Force and another on illegal mining activities in Atia Community. A number of other petitions have also been heard.

Journalism does not only serve to foster public awareness on topical and contemporary issues within the society; it does not only seek to oil the wheels of social justice in the cause of the day to day relationship between persons in the society. Journalism does not only seek to create economic impacts or shape social discourse, amongst other salient roles. Journalism, significantly, provides the platform to hold leaders accountable to the people, placing their actions and inactions on an objectively labeled weighing balance aimed at correcting the ills and shortcomings and promoting laudable performance.

To do these behooves journalists not only as a social responsibility, but also as a compelling duty to the populace in the interest of preserving today for posterity.

It is on the heels of discharging this responsibility and duty that His Excellency, Udom Emmanuel, immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, enjoys due selection and nod as a pillar, and a towering one at that, for journalists given a million and one considerations.

In an era where political leaders and gentlemen of the ink profession are given to a cat and mouse duel, Mr. Udom Emmanuel is adorned in superlative terms with laurels of gold and garland of roses not only for his concrete, obvious and outstanding achievements but also for his humane, fatherly and brotherly dispositions towards the people of Akwa Ibom State as they compete in celebrating this humble and unassuming personality that had touched the length and breath of the state while on his duty tour of holding sway as Governor.

Notwithstanding his ability to institute peace, industrialization and other sectoral achievements, perhaps it is worth noting, that his sincere and inspiring support to his successor and Governor of the State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, stands him out as a reliable model in leadership. Mr Emmanuel has not made any attempt to be overbearing on the government after him because he is not a typical Nigerian politician, and has patriotically kept his promise, that when his time was over, he will pick his iPad and return to work as a professional that he is, and allow his successor to be fully in charge of the State. Those who chanted that he wanted a third term through surrogacy have since recanted their claims. The immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel has set a template in predecessor/successor relationship worthy of emulation by others.

Thumbs up to the Nigerian Union of Journalists for the well thought out choice and for her positive contributions in shaping public discourse as in the instant roll of honours.

Leadership success always starts with vision. For instance, John Kennedy famously dreamt of putting a man on the moon. Eleanor Roosevelt envisioned a world of equal opportunities for women and minorities. Wendy Loop was still a college student when she dreamt of making American schools better by creating a cadre of young, enthusiastic teachers.

Visionary leaders have the ability to see what no one else sees. They find potential and opportunities in unfavourable times. Amidst, challenges, successful leaders are optimists. They see possibilities where others see impossibilities.

Everyone in the world may see challenges, but what visionary leaders see are potentials to eradicate these challenges, and how to lead the masses into getting this done without excuses. This is what Governor Umo Eno is doing in Akwa Ibom State.

Governor Eno, no doubt, has exhibited all these characteristics of visionary leadership in the last eighteen months of his administration, understanding the fact that compelling vision can truly change the world.

Interestingly, his efforts and passion for leadership have not only ranked him as a true leader, but as a man on a divine assignment, strongly committed to building the Akwa Ibom of our dreams.

In practical approach, the Governor has in the last eighteen months, worked so hard to translate the vision of his governance blueprint, “The ARISE Agenda”, across all the key five areas which are: Agricultural Revolution, Rural Development, Infrastructural Maintenance and Expansion, Security Maintenance and of course Educational Advancement.

He has painstakingly followed through on his vision to ignite agricultural revolution and ensure food security for the people as he declared every first and third Fridays of the month “Farming Days” so workers can return to the farm and plant.

Also, during the 2024 second planting season where he personally flag-off, the Governor distributed improved cassava cuttings, maize seeds, pumpkin seeds, fertilizers and other farm inputs. Work is ongoing at the 50 hectares Ibom Model Farm in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area.

In rural development, the Governor has shown total and comprehensive commitment by working hard to ensure that every local government has an ongoing project through the One Project Per Local Government Initiative. Some of these projects include Model Primary Healthcare Centre, Model Primary Schools, roads and other impactful projects.

In Infrastructural maintenance and expansion, Governor Umo Eno is passionately committed to the maintenance and expansion of critical infrastructures as about 57 strategic and economically-viable road projects, 11 direct labour road projects, and 37 other roads inherited from the last administration, bringing a total of roads project currently executed in all the local government areas to 156.

Some of the road projects include: Atiku Abubakar Flood Control Tunnel, Udom Emmanuel Boulevard, formerly Airport Road, the Ekparakwa-Ntak Ibesit Road, in Oruk Anam LGA, the Ikot Eyo- Edem Idim, Okpot-Mbiekene-Nnung Obong-Ikot Ntung-East West Road, in Nsit Ubium, the Ikot Obio Offong –Enen Nsit Road, the Mkpat Enin-Ikot Ubo Road-Ikot Ntot Road, the Urueffong-Utuku- Ibotong Road, in Urueffong Oruko Local Government Area, the Spring Road in Ikot Ekpene.

Recently, the Governor had a meeting with all the contractors working for the State Government where he advised them to seize the opportunity presented by the dry season to complete the works they have been awarded.

In Security Management, the current administration has worked assiduously to rid the State of criminal elements and ensure that the peace and security is maintained. He has offered employment to over 6,000 youths drawn from all the 31 Local Government Areas through Ibom Community Watch, provided 14 gunboats to the Joint Patrol Team headed by the Nigerian Navy as well as other 20 operational Hilux vehicles to aid the rapid response squad of the State Police Command.

In education, Governor Eno has since the inception of his administration been working hard in line with the ARISE Agenda to holistically develop, sustain and improve the sector. This is because he understands the strategic importance of education in moving a society forward.

His commitment in advancing the educational sector in the state is evident through the free and compulsory education from primary to secondary levels, payment of WAEC fees, subvention and other needs, building of Model Primary Schools in all Local Government Areas of the State and giving due attention to teacher's welfare.

In the area of healthcare delivery service, the Governor has commissioned model primary healthcare centers in Ikot Nkwo, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government area, Odot in Nsit Atai, Oboyo Ikot Ita in Nsit Ibom and many others ongoing. Also, he recently launched a comprehensive health insurance scheme to enroll civil servants and some elders who need critical care free of charge.

In addition to six ambulance trucks which he recently donated, aimed at fast-tracking the healthcare delivery service and ensuring real-time response to medical emergencies, the Governor plans to build a Medical Village along the medical corridor-from Ibom Specialist Hospital to Ikot Ekpene.

In the aviation sector, so far, the Governor has kept faith with all previous financial obligations entered into by previous administrations, which shows dedication to continuity and growth. In addition to new aircrafts fully paid for by the State government, the Governor is working to commission the Maintenance, Repairs and Overhaul (MRO) facility, build the Aviation Village for workers while operations will commence at the International Terminal at the Victor Attah International Airport soon.

In Humanitarian services, Pastor Umo Eno has shown humane disposition towards the vulnerable through extensive interventions. He is committed to building 400 compassionate homes before the end of his first term. To date, 42 of those homes have already been completed and handed over to the beneficiaries, 95 are ready to be given out while work is ongoing on the remaining.

He is also paying 50 thousand Naira monthly to 600 selected elders across the 31 LGA under the Arise Initiative for the elderly and this has helped them take care of their immediate needs and also providing free food for the most vulnerable through the Bulk Purchase Agency.

In the area of workers welfare, Pastor Umo Eno's administration has paid over 37 billion Naira out of 85.2 billion he met on resumption of Office as gratuities to retired civil servants, local government and teachers in the State.

The Governor is also dedicated to growing small and medium scale enterprises as the engine of economic growth. So far, the 2 billion Naira loan earlier granted to traders who have stalls in the market is now a grant. The Governor is also training budding entrepreneurs and giving them 500,000 naira each to establish themselves as exit strategy.

… as construction giant responds to Mail Newspaper publication

describes story as misleading

*says drainages blocked by residents led to collapse of affected spot

Against a report by The Mail newspaper (Tuesday November 19, 2024 edition), claiming a collapse of a road project by Akwa Ibom state government done through Hensek Integrated Services, the management of the company has refuted the story, describing the publication as inaccurate and misleading.

A statement by the Company through its Consultant on Communications and brand strategy, Ubong Sampson and made available to our news desk, insists that the reporter of the story wrote from a position of absolute ignorance.

The statement further faulted the story and the intentions of the writer from the angle that no attempt was made by the Reporter to contact the Hensek management or spokesperson to seek clarity, so as to be properly guided.

While admitting that the Hensek company had a job concerning Ring Road 2, the statement stressed that the affected part of Abak road as reported in the news was neither constructed nor amended by Hensek.

“It was during the reign of Ex-Governor Udom Emmanuel that Hensek Integrated Services was contracted by Akwa Ibom state government to take over a revoked contract of Ring Road 2 starting from Aka Road junction to Abak Road shortly after mechanic village. The contract terms also included the construction of a roundabout at the Abak Road end of the project.

“The said project was done and delivered timely for commissioning, which the former governor commissioned shortly before the expiration of his tenure.

“However, the affected part of Abak road is the part that continues the road immediately after the roundabout constructed by Hensek at the end of the Ring Road project. And it is worthy of note that the collapsed asphalt was not laid by Hensek, but another construction firm and was done many years back”, the statement reads in part.

The statement further noted that residents of the area had first raised the alarm when rain water started settling at that spot, following the sloppy nature of the roundabout which according to the statement, the idea was to slope water into both sides of the Abak road drains, adding that when the company sent its team to inspect the situation, it was reported that the settled water was consequent upon blockages in the drainages that were supposed to take the water.

“The company had done well to feedback the residents by advising them to either draw the attention of the state Ministry of Environment or other relevant agencies of government, or take advantage of the next sanitation exercise to desilt the drains to enable free flow of rain water– the advice, the residents apparently did not take seriously, hence, the eventual collapse of the spot.

“It is therefore misleading for the reporter to attribute the fault of the spot to Hensek Integrated Services, when the company had no business with the said spot, and it is bad when the reporter failed to contact us to seek clarity and be properly guided before going to press”, the statement further read.

The statement also advised the reporter to rather use the influence of their pen to enlighten residents on the need for proper waste disposal/management, so as to help sustain efforts on the part of government to provide motorable access roads for the citizenry, rather then use same to mislead the public.

It further stressed that Hensek Integrated Services will always remain committed to excellent job deliveries, both to private and public clients, adding that the company could only have earned the recognition it currently enjoys from several social and rights groups as the best indigenous construction firm through excellence.

…LAUDS GOV ENO’S ARISE AGENDA

Over a hundred journalists and aspiring media professionals in Eket Senatorial District, Monday converge on the Watbridge Hotel and Suites, as their Senator, Dr Ekong Sampson organized a training workshop on ICT and Effective Media Communication.

The latest being the effective training of Journalists and media practitioners from the Senatorial District to sharpen their skills and upgrade their knowledge to meet up with the 21 century demand.

Notable tutors of media and communication, including the Dean of Communication and Media Studies, University of Uyo, Prof. Peter Esuh, former Media Advisor to the Akwa Ibom Governor, Dr Udeme Nana, and communication scholar, Dr Abasifreke Idiong drilled the media professionals, while Prof Des Wilson chaired the event which had the Senior Special Assistant to Akwa Ibom State Governor on Research and Documentation, Dr Essien Ndueso as moderator.

Represented by the Honorary Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication, Chief Chris Abasieyo, Senator Sampson said the programme which is in line with Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, is aimed at improving the lives of his constituents in Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District.

The workshop which started on the 19th of October through 21st has in different specialties, facilitated for indigenes of Akwa Ibom South.

He said over 1000 people are expected to be accomodated in the training programmes which cover mining, tailoring, confectionery, advocacy, ICT, among others.

He said the periodic training initiative is in accordance with his commitment to deepening human capacity development and enhance skills and productivity of his people and lauded Governor Eno for his education development programmes in the State.

"I will continue to facilitate and support training and retraining of Akwa Ibom South indigenes, to sharpen them for the demands of the 21st century workforce and empIoyability".

Beyond the workshop and capacity enhancement programmes, Senator Sampson’s Bill for the Establishment of a Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi has scaled through second reading, while the senator has also sponsored a Bill for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Akwa Ibom South, and a Bill for the establishment of a Federal University of Medical Sciences in Eket while also working for the take-off of the University of Maritime Studies, Oron.

Represented by the Honorary Special Adviser Chief Chris Abasieyo, Senator Sampson said the programme is aimed at improving the lives of his constituents in Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District.

The programme which started on the 19th of October through 21st has in different specialties, facilitated for indigenes of Akwa Ibom South.

He said over 1000 people are expected to be accomodated in the training programmes which cover mining, tailoring, confectionery, advocacy, ICT, among others.

He said the periodic training initiative is in accordance with his commitment to deepening human capacity development and enhance skills and productivity of his people.

Concerns arose among many individuals regarding potential conflicts of interest when Pastor Umo Eno assumed the position of Governor of Akwa Ibom State after his predecessor, His Excellency Deacon Udom Emmanuel exit office .

Numerous business owners were anxious about the future of their investments, uncertain if their projects would continue, be halted, or reassigned to different contractors.

Communities benefiting from these projects feared that the expected development might be abandoned, jeopardizing their hopes for improved road infrastructure.

This monumental initiative is poised to revolutionize access to healthcare services across the state, ensuring that no one, regardless of financial standing, is left without the medical care they deserve.

Governor Umo Eno has shown unwavering commitment to improving the well-being of the citizens of Akwa Ibom, and ARISECARE is a testament to his vision for a healthier and more prosperous state. The governor's support for this scheme underscores his dedication to enhancing healthcare access and achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). His leadership has ensured the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Agency (AKSHIA) through legislative backing and financial commitment, setting the stage for ARISECARE's successful implementation.

One of the key aspects of ARISECARE is its inclusivity. The scheme is structured into three comprehensive plans tailored to meet the healthcare needs of various sectors of society. The Formal Sector Plan caters to civil servants, public sector employees, and workers in the organized private sector. By mandating health insurance for employees, this plan relieves families of the financial burden of medical expenses, fostering a healthier workforce and promoting productivity. Under this plan, regular premium contributions from both employers and employees will ensure sustainable healthcare financing.

In recognition of the informal sector's substantial contribution to the state's economy, ARISECARE has designed an Informal Sector Plan that accommodates artisans, traders, farmers, and other self-employed individuals. Over 70% of Akwa Ibom’s population is engaged in informal economic activities, and this plan provides a flexible payment structure to suit their unique financial situations. It is an inclusive approach that ensures that even those outside the formal economy can access quality healthcare services.

Another major highlight of ARISECARE is its Vulnerable Peoples Scheme, designed to protect the most marginalized members of society. This plan, funded through government subsidies and contributions from donors and development partners, will provide free or subsidized healthcare services to the elderly, pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and other indigent individuals. Governor Umo Eno’s administration has made it clear that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and ARISECARE is an embodiment of that principle.

Since the inauguration of the AKSHIA Board on 2nd July 2024, under the capable leadership of Dr. Edikan Ekwere, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor and Board Chairman, the agency has wasted no time in preparing for the launch of ARISECARE. The agency has successfully accredited 80 primary health centers out of 100 visited across the state’s three senatorial districts, ensuring that the infrastructure is in place to provide care immediately after the launch. Additionally, over 11,000 vulnerable residents have already been enrolled under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, with five secondary healthcare facilities accredited to handle referrals from primary centers.

Governor Umo Eno’s administration has also taken proactive steps to ensure that the organized private sector and civil servants are onboarded seamlessly into the scheme. Around 1,700 people from the private sector have already been enrolled, and discussions with the leadership of organized labour have set the stage for enrolling over 52,000 civil servants. This demonstrates the government's commitment to ensuring that no sector is left behind in the push for universal healthcare coverage.

The informal sector has also seen a remarkable start, with over 3,000 transporters and market women already enrolled. This is a clear indication that the people of Akwa Ibom are embracing ARISECARE, understanding its potential to safeguard their health and financial well-being. The agency has also conducted training for healthcare providers at primary health centers, preparing them for the eventual rollout of capitation payments and the provision of care under the scheme.

The success of ARISECARE will be driven by a well-thought-out implementation strategy that includes a robust public awareness campaign to educate citizens on the benefits of the scheme. The agency will also deploy a user-friendly digital platform to facilitate registration, premium payments, and claims processing, ensuring a seamless experience for enrollees. Additionally, the agency will work closely with healthcare providers across the state to guarantee that all enrollees have access to high-quality services.

Governor Umo Eno’s administration understands the importance of monitoring and evaluation in ensuring the scheme’s sustainability. Regular assessments will be conducted to ensure that ARISECARE is achieving its intended objectives and delivering on its promise to improve the health outcomes of Akwa Ibom residents. Despite today being a public holiday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Akwa Ibom State Chapter held its inaugural meeting of the State Executive Committee, demonstrating the party's commitment to hard work and dedication to the people of Akwa Ibom State.

The meeting, which commenced at 12noon and adjourned at 2pm, was chaired by the State Chairman, Rt. Hon (Elder) Aniekan Akpan who emphasized the importance of party unity and loyalty to the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, who is the leader of the party in the state. His administration has continued to pay salaries, provide bonuses to civil servants, and fulfill financial obligations such as gratuities and pensions, even as many other states have struggled to meet these basic needs. This financial stability is not the result of borrowing or accruing debt; rather, it stems from Governor Eno's ability to multiply the state’s resources through strategic investments and prudent management.

One of the cornerstones of Governor Eno’s leadership is his commitment to food security. Through the Bulk Food Purchase Programme. His administration has ensured that the people of Akwa Ibom have access to affordable food and consistent encouragement for Akwa Ibom people to engage in agriculture. This is a critical achievement in a time of rising inflation and economic uncertainty.

More so, the governor has turned what was once waste into wealth, converting a ravine into a tourist site that not only preserves the environment but also generates revenue for the state.

As protests against bad governance rage in other parts of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom stands as a beacon of peace and good governance. The state’s stability is not a coincidence; it is the result of deliberate, strategic leadership that prioritizes the welfare of its people. While others protest, the people of Akwa Ibom celebrate the progress and peace they enjoy, understanding that their state is an oasis in a turbulent national landscape.

Governor Eno's achievements are even more remarkable considering the fact that he has not resorted to borrowing to fund his projects. Despite having the option to take out loans, he has chosen to manage the state’s finances responsibly, delivering on his promises without adding to the state’s debt burden. This approach not only preserves the state’s financial health, but also ensures that future generations are not saddled with unnecessary debt.

The ARISE Agenda of Gov. Umo Eno's administration is more than just a set of policies or mantra; it is a comprehensive vision for the future of Akwa Ibom. ... as Youths, Students, NLC, TUC Opt Out of the Planned Protest


Ahead of the planned nationwide protest, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has urged youths and residents of the State to maintain peace to enable the State achieve its economic development plans as contained in the ARISE Agenda.

Addressing a cross section of critical stakeholders drawn from youth groups, Students, Market Association, NLC and TUC, Civil Society Organizations, and others in Uyo, the Governor acknowledged that it is a constitutional right of citizens to assemble and peacefully protest certain acts of government, but appealed that the State will benefit more in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

He noted that the State under his leadership has made commited effort to improve the welfare of Akwa Ibom people through various interventions especially in the areas of government - labour relations, humanitarian initiatives, youth empowerment schemes, palliative, agriculture, education, healthcare services and other capital projects executed, stressing that the State's status as one of the most peaceful has attracted tourists and investors.

"Let me also emphasize that we are a peaceful State and we have maintained this hard-won peace, over the years. I want to appeal, if at all, you will participate in the planned protest, (since youth from a number of States have opted out), to please do so peacefully. You must ensure that miscreants and hoodlums do not hijack your protest.

"The question, however remains: Should the protest actually take place here, given our people-friendly disposition, our deep and abiding concerns for the welfare of our people, the workers in the public service, the care for the poor and the most vulnerable, our intentional concentration of resources to giving hope to the hopeless, and the ARISE Compassionate Homes we have built.

"We have paid over N22 billion gratuities to the retired Primary School, Local Government and State Civil Service retirees and N50 thousand stipend to the elderly in our ARISE Elderly Care Initiative.

"Our free voucher programme through our Bulk Purchase Agency has so far touched 314, 422 families in the state, the social transfers to the aged, physically challenged, chronically ill, widows has equally impacted and touched over two hundred thousand beneficiaries drawn from the revised Social Register.

"We have also paid wage award for three months to cushion the effect of the high cost of living arising from the removal of fuel subsidy.

"We paid the 13 month salary tagged ’Enomber’ last December and about a month ago, had paid 1.1 billion Naira as bonus to all public service workers to mark the ‘Public Service Week.’ We have commissioned 236 Grace Estate, as a fulfillment of government’s promise to provide low to middle-income housing schemes for civil servants. 150 of those units are to be given free through a raffle draw after the payment of N50,000 Expression of Interest. I am informed that, the programme is ongoing.

"We have released 2023 promotion and increased the pensions of those who retired before 2012. We have approved the release of the outstanding 7.7 percent Contributory Pension to contributors. The conduct of Service-wide examinations in preparation for the 2024 promotions have been approved," he said.

The Governor further enumerated other achievements to include; donation of 36 fully-furnished two-bedroom bungalows equipped with solar powered borehole, solar electricity and business support grant of N500,000 to each of the beneficiaries. 164 more of such homes are to be completed this second year, and 400 homes at the end of the first term.

While enumerating many other strides of the State government, the State Chief Executive appealed to the youths and all Akwa Ibomites to join hands with government to further on its development initiative for the good of all.

In their separate remarks, the youth groups, students, market association and organised labour commended the Governor for his commitment to the people's welfare and the general development of the State and assured that they were not part of the organizers of the planned protest and will not take part in it.

Similarly, Mr. Harry Udoh who represented the CSOs commended the governor's efforts at impacting every sector of the society through palliative, bursary, skill training and empowerment, prompt payment of salaries, and other entitlements to workers, and appealed for fairness and judicious distribution of palliative.

Also speaking, the Oku Ibom Ibibio and President-General of the Akwa Ibom Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, Dr. Ntenyin Solomon Etuk acknowledged that the Governor has been very intentional in his development efforts, adding that the protest was not necessary in Akwa Ibom and urged everyone to continue to support him for more dividends of democracy.

On his part, the State commissioner of Police, CP Waheed Ayilara said the police and other sister agencies were ready to provide the necessary protection to all including those who wish to protest, while reeling off conditions they must meet to do so.

He urged everyone to go about their legitimate businesses and to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

The beautiful thing about Akwa Ibom State is that God had decided to bless them with good leaders, and they have come in successive administrations in the State since 1999.

How do we know a good leader? Good leadership reflects in the policies and programmes of the administration especially, when they are targeted at the well-being and prosperity of the people. These are often more pronounced in the projects envision for the people. Most times, these projects meet the bricks through unnecessary criticisms from a segment of the society.

Today, Akwa Ibom State can pride itself as becoming the destination of choice in Nigeria, and indeed, the world. But which of these projects by different administrations did people not criticize? Therefore, Governor Umo Eno will not be an exception, but that cannot deter him from carrying out the bright vision for his people.

That is why the criticism of plans by the Akwa Ibom State Government to build a 19 storey ultra modern commercial tower to replace the old and dilapidated Governor's Lodge in Lagos , Nigeria's economic nerve centre need not give anyone a sleepless night. If anything, Akwa Ibom State should even rejoice because every criticism of government project in the State often signals that such will turn out to be a game-changer for the State and the people.

Indeed, there has been no worthwhile development effort of government of the State that has ever been spared the arrows of blind shooters who often put the cart before the horse, being blinded by pettiness and other mundane impediments that they allow to put a wedge between them and the development and prosperity of the people people.

It has been a long list criticisms and condemnation for projects carefully planned and clinically executed by the different governments of the State. But the good thing is that they have always taken the path of tragi-comedy. In the end, Akwa Ibom State wins. In the end, Akwa Ibom smiles and prospers.

When Arc Obong Victor Attah came on board in 1999, he had lofty plans for the State. When he started to embark on such projects and investments like Econet, airport, Le Meridian, plaza and others, some people described such projects as white elephant and misplaced priority. For instance, they said Akwa Ibom State does not need an airport since there were airports in Calabar and Port Harcourt (Might be Rivers State should not have also built the one in Port Harcourt because there was one in Enugu).

They also said embarking on the Le Meridian Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort will make Akwa Ibom State to have prostitutes. One wonders whether those cities with prostitutes built a hotel for them.

But today, the airport people criticized is now the toast of the aviation sector, and redirecting the world to Akwa Ibom State. The same thing with the hotel, now Ibom Icon hotel where every event in the country is being hosted. If Attah bowed to pressure and jettisoned the idea, what would have been our fate today?

Fast forward to the time of Senator Godswill Akpabio as governor of Akwa Ibom State. They also criticized the plan to build a stadium. Today, that is the only stadium in Nigeria that has met FIFA standard to host matches in Nigeria. That is the power of vision over emotions.

Did they not also condemn the building of Government House? Not even mention the Tropicana Entertainment Centre and others. But Akpabio saw a greater picture ahead, and went ahead to do his best for his people.

Just recently, the administration of Mr Udom Emmanuel came under fire for the vision of Ibom Air. They said it will be a waste, and all of that. The same set of people who often resort to protesting government plans, ostensibly from the pains of losing election by those they supported. But today, Ibom Air has hoisted Akwa Ibom State on the firmament of greatness and prosperity.

Ibom Air is now the most preferred airline by air travellers, and the same people who condemned it are enjoying its services and sharing in the glory of the story because they are from Akwa Ibom State.

Of course they also criticized the 21 storey smart building, International Christian Worship Centre and even the expansion works on the Airport road, now Udom Emmanuel Boulevard among others.

Thus, the condemnation and criticism of the proposed building of the Ibom Tower in Lagos by the Governor Umo Eno administration is a jingle from a familiar bell. The cockrel will not crow three times before they fizzle out. One cannot stop the power of vision.

Governor Umo Eno has a great vision for Akwa Ibom State to play a prominent role in the real estate investment in Nigeria which one is safe to say has its capital in Lagos, as the economic capaciital of Nigeria.

With its growing population, rapid urbanization and flourishing economy, Lagos is the best place to invest in real estate business, and Governor Umo Eno has seen ahead. It is good that the governor has taken the bull by the horn, planned to prepare Akwa Ibom State for the future of abundance through the expected income from the investment. Is that what people should condemn? There are some things we do, and just inadvertently give ourselves out; this is one of them. Why do we weep for prosperity and foresight? And we should not be termed enemy of progress?

The real estate market is a money spinner for the investors and residential real estate holds even greater prospects. Akwa Ibom people should be grateful that the governor is putting the State on the front seat of this emerging opportunity. Or would Akwa Ibom had preferred to lose the golden opportunity today and lament in the future? Penny wise and pounds foolish, you would agree!

If we have seen a leader that is taking us from the flanks into the midfield of economic viability, let us celebrate him and grab the opportunity with both hands.

This feigned story of hunger at home does not hold water. Everyone knows Governor Eno is an advocate of the downtrodden. He has done that in different ways. He has given the vulnerable food and shelter. What else is expected if not to also invest in their future, and the opportunity beckons!

The intention of government is to tap into the ever growing real estate business environment of Lagos so that when the investment matures, government will have where to fall back on and complement statutory allocations and deploy same into bettering the lots of the people.

Whoever is against this is equally standing on the progress of the people. Judas did not talk about the cost of the oil because he loved the poor, it was for his selfish reasons. That is not different from what is happening in Akwa Ibom today.

But the beautiful thing is that Akwa is blessed to have a leader who is focused and never deterred. He cannot be discouraged by the call of those criticizing the building of Ibom Towers in Lagos? Since the days of the founding fathers, what have they not criticized? Yet, they have lived in that same Lagos since graduation from the university. Who is fooling who?

Investigation by Global Pilot newspaper shows that all the council Chairmen would love to return for an elective term of three years through the ballot if not for impediments such as zoning, stakeholders endorsements and statutory delegates.

“So far no local Government Chairman has openly come out to say he is not contesting this elections, meaning they are busy weighing their options. Even those who know they will not return have refused to throw in the towel due to their deep pocket and financial muscle. They hope that along the line they could pull some magic and buy their way through,” Bright Udom a public affairs analyst noted

Weeks after the Akwa Ibom Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) published notice of elections with timetable, political intrigues have disarmed some council chairmen with a technical knockout although they stress that the Primaries are yet to be conducted.

In Nsit Ubium Sen. Effiong Bob led stakeholders to put to bed contest for the office of the Chairman Of council by presenting the preferred Chairmanship aspirant Alfred Charles to the stakeholders for endorsement.

The event which held in his Ewet Housing Residence was witnessed by Barr. Onofiok Luke, Barr. Dan Akpan, Deputy Leader Of the House Of Assembly Barr. Otobong Bob, Captain Ekong, Mr Udeme Ubom, among others.

Alfred Charles who hails from Ubium clan where the seat was zoned to appreciated the Governor Pastor Umo Eno, Nsit Ubium Caucus and the people for Choosing him for leadership.

In ONNA Local Government Area the zoning by stakeholders which favors Asuna Nung Oku clan is set to be the yardstick for decision on the next Chairman of Council. The sitting Chairman Hon. Inabasi Ekanem is not Favour’s by the arrangement and will have to transit, support whoever emerges from the zoning since it’s a decision of majority of stakeholders. The Asuna Nung Oku clan comprising of eleven (11) villages is bounded by Awa Afaha clan to the east, Qua Iboe River to the west, Mkpok Village in Nung Andem clan to the south and Mbioto 2 in Etinan to the North. Created by immediate past Governor Udom Emmanuel the clan boasts of an excellent village to ward ratio ideal for political permutation.

In Ibesikpo Asutan, Zoning and stakeholders decision is playing a frontline role in how the third tier of Government shapes up. The stakeholders unanimously affirmed the zoning of Chairmanship position to Ibesikpo south which is former ward 4 and now ward 5, a move which they explain allows for FairPlay, justice and equity since the ward has never produced the council chairman before. A political analyst Lady Nancy Udom who was on ground noted “the sitting Chairman Hon. Akon Michael is from Asutan and the zoning Favours Ibesikpo south which means that she will not be returning to the office. Don’t forget she was also signatory to the zoning arrangement. Others who signed are Linus Nkan, Ubong Attah, Uwem Ita Etuk, Hon. Emmanuel obot etc.”

In Mkpat Enin Local Government Area the sitting Transition Chairman Lady Mercy Bassey has been endorsed by stakeholders unanimously due to her Excellent performance and 40% affirmative action for women as promoted by Gov. Umo Eno.

In Nsit Ibom Hon. Inemesit Ubokudom is riding on the endorsement of the political leader Major General Isang and House Of Assembly Member Hon. Eric Akpan to challenge the incumbent Otobong Aaron who is also seeking the Chairmanship ticket. Otobong who was Vice to Hon. Eric when the latter was Chairman before going to the House Of Assembly is relying on her performance which has attracted both the Governor and First Lady to her Local Government Area.

Stakeholders have equally endorsed Gideon Uwa in Etim Ekpo and Sunday Tom in Esit Eket.

Eket Local Government Area being one of the flashpoints has experienced Peace recently due to the political wizardry of the Political Leader of Eket Senatorial District Rt. Hon. Nduese Essien who worked tirelessly to ensure all aspirants see the need to support Hon. Akan Tommey so his numerous projects and programmes are not rolled back. Eket Stakeholders meeting which held at the PDP Secretariat in Eket saw the leading contender Obong Emmanuel Mbong step down and endorse incumbent Akan Tommey. Others who attended are Prof. Etie Ben Akpan, Chief C. H. Isong, Engr. Emmanuel Ekott, Hon. Nsidibe Akata etc.

Uyo, Uruan, Etinan, Obot Akara , Etim Ekpo are set to be determined by their political leaders who are firmly in charge of both the Party structure and stakeholders in their respective local Government Areas except in Abak where there is battle between the Speaker Of Akwa Ibom State House Of Assembly Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong and that of former deputy Governor Moses Ekpo. While the Speaker Favours the return of the current Transition Chairman for another term the Former deputy Governor’s camp kicks at it.

This has heighten the political temperature in Abak for weeks as various documents have been sponsored in the media by the various actors in a bid to outwit each other. This battle could be decided in the field if no party pushes back except the Governor intervenes for peace to reign.

The Secretary to State Government Prince Enobong Uwah is expected to decide where the pendulum swings in Uyo Local Government Area as he is the political Leader. Currently he favors the return of Hon. Uwemedimo Udo for a second term. In Etim Ekpo Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem SAN is expected to decide as he enjoys huge followership and goodwill in both the party and the stakeholders. Same goes to Monday Uko in Obot Akara who is the Dean Of Commissioners in the Akwa Ibom State Government Executive Council.

Ahead of the forthcoming local government elections in Akwa Ibom State, women leaders in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, under the auspices of Mkpat Enin Grassroot Women, have made a strong position on their choice of the next Executive Chairman of the Local Government. They have unequivocally insisted on the current Transition Committee Chairman, Hon. Mercy Bassey as their preferred candidate for the job.

In a rare show of political interest and desire, the women, drawn from across all the Political Wards of the Local Government, last Sunday, convened at the residence of the President of Mbong Iban, Mkpat Enin Chapter, Obonganwan Rose Ekanem, in Mkpat Enin Urban, to, among other issues, unanimously take a political position as regards the local government election. This was rather surprising considering that in time past, the women have been mostly laid back or reluctant in actively participating in politics. This is why after so many years, the local government can only boost of only a handful of women who have stood out in politics.

A key highlight of the gathering was the fact that the women emphasized that the conversation about zoning must be wholistic enough to also consider that in the history of Mkpat Enin, no woman has ever served as an elected Chairman of the Local Government. She said that the women deemed it necessary to appreciate the governor and wife for the change in the political narrative of the area through the choice Lady Bassey as Transition Committee Chairman, adding that the administration of Lady Mercy Bassey has given Mkpat Enin people that sense of belonging.

The frontline woman leader further appealed to Governor Eno and wife to kindly implement the 40 percent affirmative action in Mkpat Enin by helping a woman to be elected as the Executive Chairman of the Local Government for the first time in history, adding that the group’s preferred aspirant, Hon Bassey was very competent having performed excellently as the Transition Committee Chairman.

Corroborating the position of Obonganwan Ekanem and similar opinions by other women at the meeting, Mrs Imelda Ibanga added, “We have been playing the role of back-benchers for decades, now it is the turn of the women to produce the Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin and we will be given the right of that 40 percent affirmative action as done in other local governments because we have been neglected for a long time. We want a woman this time to lead us. And we are proud that we have a capacity Lady in the person of Hon. Mercy Bassey, a competent hand tested and trusted”.

Obonganwan Ekanem and Mrs Ibanga’s positions were not different from the sentiments of the mover 50 women who attended the meeting. These are women who hold the aces across the four clans and political wards of the local government. They have unanimously spoken in favour of Hon Mercy Bassey and outrightly adopted her as their preferred candidate for the forthcoming local government chairmanship election.

Another important factor that is in favour of Mercy Bassey is zoning. It must be strongly emphasized that the Transition Committee Chairman is very eligible to contest for the Chairmanship because she is favored by zoning. Since the advent of the current zoning arrangements, zoning of elective offices in Mkpat Enin whether it is the House of Assembly or Local Government Chairman, has always been based on the four Clans - Ikpa Ibom, Ikpa Ikono, Ibiaku and Ukpum Minya, adding that micro-zoning is just a fiction of some people’s imagination. And according to the present rotation formular, the next local government chairmanship is zoned to Ikpa Ibom Clan and Hon Mercy Bassey, who hails from Ikot Obio Ndoho in Ikpa Ibom Clan, is eligible to contest.

“Zoning must have a limit otherwise, we will wake up one day and start canvasing for House of Assembly to be zoned to a particular family. We have four clans in Mkpat Enin and elective offices have always been rotating between the four clans,” an indigene of Mkpat Enin said. “So I can tell you authoritatively that Mercy Bassey is favored by zoning because she is from Ikpa Ibom Clan where the next chairman of the local government is zoned to. So every indigene of Ikpa Ibom who is of age and has the requisite qualification is eligible to contest. But right now, Hon Mercy Bassey is the most popular and most acceptable candidate and she is getting all the endorsements. That is what is giving a few individuals sleepless nights”.

Ahead of the forthcoming local government elections in Akwa Ibom State, women in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area under the auspices of Mkpat Enin Grassroots Women, have unanimously adopted the current Transition Committee Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. Mercy Bassey as their preferred aspirant for the chairmanship election.

Speaking last Sunday during a meeting of Grassroot Women across the Local Government at her residence in Mkpat Enin Urban, the President of Mbong Iban Mkpat Enin Chapter, Obonganwan Rose Ekanem and leader Mkpat Enin Grassroot Women expressed deep appreciation to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno and wife, Her Excellency Pastor Patience Umo Eno over the selection of Hon. Bassey as the Transition Committee Chairman of the Local Government.

Obonganwan Ekanem said that the women deem it necessary to appreciate the governor and wife once again for the change in the political narrative of the area through the choice Lady Bassey as Transition Committee Chairman, adding that the administration of Lady Mercy Bassey has given Mkpat Enin people that sense of belonging and rekindled hope for a brighter future of the indigenes.

The frontline woman leader further appealed to Governor Eno and wife, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Eno to implement the 40 percent affirmative action in Mkpat Enin by helping a woman to be elected as the Executive Chairman of the Local Government for the first time in history, adding that the group’s preferred aspirant, Hon Bassey was very competent having performed excellently as the Transition Committee Chairman.

She called on the women to support Hon. Bassey’s aspiration, saying that the meeting became necessary to equip the women with useful information in order for them to have direction and channel their support to Hon. Bassey for a total victory for the local government to experience more sustainable and human capital development as well as food security.

Obonganwan said the choice of the transition chairman as their preferred aspirant was as a result of the competency as demonstrated within her seven months in office and presented the Mkpat Enin Transition Chairman of Hon. Mercy Bassey to the Mkpat Enin Grassroot Women as their preferred candidate.

According to her, "I called you here as women leaders of the fourteen wards and four clans of the local government to join hands with the Mbong Iban Mkpat Enin to support Hon. Bassey as the next Executive Chairman of the Council".

Also speaking at the meeting, the wife of a one-time Special Ddviser to former Governor Victor Attah on Political and Legislative Affairs, Mrs Grace Udobia appreciated the Transition Committee Chairman's ingenuity at ensuring an all-inclusive governance, adding that Hon. Bassey deserves the support for galvanizing Mkpat Enin people into one political direction through the Mkpat Enin at 35 programme and peace building projects.

Madam Udobia acknowledged that she has found leadership qualities in Hon. Bassey, urging the women to rally for necessary support for the Transition Committee Chairman in order to ensure that Mkpat Enin women are given a place in the political space of the area by voting Hon. Mercy Bassey into office as the next Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

In her remarks, Mrs Aniekan Sam informed the women that she has been practically involved in Mkpat Enin politics for decades, and have witnessed and experienced many administrations, that Hon. Mercy Bassey has proven her capacity as a paradigm of female competency in political office and has been scored the best so far in such capacity.

Mrs Sam, who said that the Transition Committee Chairman has convinced Mkpat Enin people that she is well versed with wisdom, knowledge and ability to give the people effective services with dividend of democracy, noted that with the achievements of Hon. Bassey, there was a clear indication that she has the interest of the people and the local government at heart and as such, should be given opportunity to do more as Executive Chairman.

She said, "As experienced women, we all are witnesses of how Mercy Bassey has transformed the Council Secretariat to an attractive and conducive environment and also refurbished dilapidated facilities, intervention on medical services by rehabilitating and equipping the Primary Health Center, Ikot Inyang Okop, supported the disabilities through her “Enabling the Disable” programme, grading projects abandoned by past administrations especially, the state road with particular reference to the only road that leads from 42 to Ikot Akpaden”.

In her remarks, Obonganwan Arit Sunday Ekwere, while appreciating Governor Umo Eno and wife, Pastor Patience Umo Eno for the appointment of Hon. Mercy Bassey as Transition Committee Chairman of Mkpat Enin, which she said has unveiled the secret that Mkpat Enin has been blessed with a woman with a heart of gold, recounted how some traders operating in Ukam Market lost their lives and goods while on transit due to the deplorable state of the road for over two years, saying that at within only one month in office Hon. Bassey rehabilitated the roads and made them comfortable for motorists to ply which ease high cost of transportation and also save lives.

Enumerating some of the projects undertaken by Hon Bassey, Obonganwan Ekwere mentioned roads that link many villages such as Ibebwe, Ikot Mkpeye, Ikot Unya, Ikot Eyienhe, Iffe Town etc to make life easy for the citizens living in interior rural area, as well as boosting agriculture by turning hecters of lands to farm with varieties of plants including Cassava plants with over 4-hecters of land, 490 stands of plantain, vegetables, okoro, tomatoes and corn etc.

In her words, “When I visited the farm, it was pest and weed free as the Chairman employed over 6 farmers with not less than N50,000 each as salary on monthly basis. The shoe factory has been rehabilitated and is on curse as we will start selling our homemade shoes to major distributors in the country. As a child of honor, Mercy is currently building a Traditional Rulers Council at the Council Secretariat”.

Also speaking, Mrs Imelda Ibanga thanked the Transition Committee Chairman for making Mkpat Enin a comfortable place for dwellers through the renovation of the Cottage Hospital, Odoro-Ikot, with provision of mini water, toilet, lights installation, provision of brand-new beds and other basic amenities to promote healthy living and save lives.

On her part, Mrs. Emem Thompson said that Hon Bassey’s performance within six months has given Mkpat Enin people the assurance that if given a chance as Executive Chairman of the local government, she will give the area a new look by transforming it into tourists delight and destination of choice.

Mrs. Thompson, who said that the performance of Hon. Bassey was in line with the governor's ARISE Agenda which captures; Agriculture Revolution for food security, Infrastructural Maintenance and Advancement, Educational Advancement, Rural Development and and Security Management, noted that the Transition Committee Chairman has made impactful touch on all those areas and called on the state governor and his dear wife to support their daughter, Hon. Mercy Bassey to complete all the good works she has started which is a clear vision for the development of Mkpat Enin.

In her goodwill message, woman leader representing Ikpa Ibom Ward 2, Mrs Emem Usoro expressed satisfaction over the choice of Hon Bassey as the next Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin, saying that she was the best choice for the women given the fact that the Transition Committee Chairman has been able to demonstrate managerial prowess making the people feel the impact of her administration by managing the local government resources for the benefits of the constituents through programmes and projects.

Also speaking, the Supervisor for Women Affairs in Mkpat Enin Local Government, Mrs Mercy Unwana Usen threw her weight behind the aspiration of Hon. Bassey. She her reasons for supporting Hon Bassey was due to her diligent and hardworking nature which she has dedicated to the service of her people, adding that Hon. Lady Mercy Bassey was only aspirant that will bring succor to the people with a robust administration hence the need for all and sundry in the local government to support her.

In her vote of thanks, Obonganwan Gladys Ikosong representing Ukpum Minya Ward 4, commended the state governor and His wife, the first lady and first daughter of Mkpat Enin for giving Hon. Mercy Bassey an opportunity to serve as vice chairman and now Transition Committee Chairman. Obonganwan Ikosong and Mrs Eno Afia disclosed that calmness has returned to Mkpat Enin under the leadership of Hon Mercy Bassey.

Mkpat Enin Grassroot Women called on the State Governor and wife, the women and well-meaning people of Mkpat Enin to support Mercy Bassey as the next Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin, expressing optimism that if the Transition Committee Chairman is given a chance, that Mkpat Enin will grow in both leaps and bounds within a shortest time.

Ahead of the upcoming local government elections in Akwa Ibom State, there have been lots of permutations in most of the local government areas especially around the Chairmanship elections. Amidst all of these, Governor Umo Eno has made a few things crystal clear which could be a guide to the people while making their choices.

First, the governor has reaffirmed that zoning will be upheld. Secondly, he has also stated that women will be fairly considered with six chairmanship slots while the position of the vice chairmanship positions will largely be for them. Thirdly, he has repeatedly insisted on competence in the choice of the chairmanship position.

For Mkpat Enin, the governor’s guide should even make the process of choosing the most suitable chairmanship candidate very seamless. This is because Mkpat Enin already has someone who easily ticks all the boxes; competent and experienced woman who is favoured by zoning in the person of Hon (Lady) Mercy Bassey, the current Transition Committee Chairman of the local government.

Since the advent of zoning as template for political election in Mkpat Enin, the consideration has always been on Clan basis as political offices have been rotating among the four Clans - Ikpa Ibom, Ikpa Ikono, Ukpum Minya, and Ibiaku. Therefore, with the next chairmanship position going to Ikpa Ibom Clan where Hon Mercy Bassey hails from, it is ordinarily expected for the people of Mkpat Enin to clearly see who is the best choice for them.

As for of the best performing Transition Committee Chairmen in the state, the people of Mkpat Enin cannot afford to gamble with this golden opportunity of securing their future in safe hands. In all of the conversations about the election, nobody has faulted Mercy Bassey on performance, competence and experience. It therefore means that if the people mean well for the local government, then they must set every myopic and selfish sentiments aside and insist on Mercy Bassey.

Our research journey took us to the communities of Uruan, Esit Eket, Obot Akara, Mbo, and Ibesikpo, where we encountered a people who had been transformed by the power of compassionate leadership. They spoke of Governor Umo Eno with a fervor that was both inspiring and humbling. His achievements, they said, were not just physical structures, but a testament to his ability to listen, to understand, and to care. From the construction of roads that now connect once-isolated communities to the modern health centers and model primary schools that have become beacons of hope, the governor's impact is palpable.

But it is not just the physical projects that have won the hearts of the people; it is the human touch, the empathy, and the kindness that have defined Governor Umo Eno's administration. The payment of gratuities and leave grants, the ecological remediation, and the countless acts of kindness have all contributed to a sense of hope and renewal. In the face of sponsored security breaches and orchestrated protests, Governor Umo Eno's resolve to transform Oro nation remains unshaken. His administration's unwavering commitment to security, development, and youth empowerment is a testament to his visionary leadership. One must wonder, is sponsored protest in a state like Akwa Ibom, known for its peaceful and harmonious nature, truly necessary?


Despite the recent minor security incidents in coastal areas, Governor Umo Eno has demonstrated proactive governance by strengthening partnerships with security agencies and providing essential equipment. His development projects across Oro nation's local government areas and inclusive approach to governance have earned him widespread acclaim. The Governor's efforts have led to significant improvements in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, positively impacting the lives of citizens.

However, in an embarrassing move, some youths under the aegis of Oro Redemption Forum have allowed themselves to be used by political elements to protest, rather than resorting to cordial communication should they have sensed any inconvenience. This ill-conceived protest, fueled by political machinations, seeks to undermine the administration's achievements. The protest's timing and nature suggest a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the Governor's successes and create an atmosphere of instability.

In any coastal area with porous borders, insecurity is inevitable due to the constant influx of people entering and exiting the area. This is a common challenge faced by many coastal cities around the world. For instance, Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub, has struggled with security issues in its coastal areas, with reports of kidnapping, armed robbery, and illegal oil bunkering. Similarly, Miami, Florida, has experienced drug trafficking and gang-related violence in its coastal areas. Even Rotterdam, Netherlands, has faced issues with drug smuggling and human trafficking in its port area. Given these examples, it's clear that coastal areas require specialized security measures to address their unique challenges. Governor Umo Eno's proactive approach to securing Oro nation's coastal areas is a step in the right direction, and his efforts should be supported rather than undermined by unnecessary protests.

Protests can have far-reaching negative consequences, diverting attention and resources away from critical development projects. They also create an unfavorable environment for growth, stifling the state's potential. It is crucial to recognize Governor Umo Eno's dedication to Oro nation's advancement and allow him to focus on his governance without unnecessary distractions. By supporting him, we can ensure continued progress and a brighter future for our state.

To say the least, Governor Umo Eno's development efforts in Oro nation are a beacon of hope. Let us rally behind his vision and work together to build a prosperous and secure future, rising above the challenges that seek to hinder our progress. We must reject the needless protest and support the Governor's initiatives, ensuring that Oro nation continues to thrive and flourish.

His chances of reconciling this are quite slim. Who will believe him? There are some things that are better avoided because one can see the end from the beginning. The best thing for the governor to do is to withdraw from it. Frankly speaking, the governor cannot settle this! People have already made up their minds! In fact, there is trouble!

Just that it is shocking, and many people never expected such from their Pastor Governor. Like William Shakespeare will ask through Julius Caesar: Even thou Brutus? Even thou Umo Eno. It is like Ayi Kwei Armah wrote the book: "The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born" for a time like this.

It is even more controversial that people will want to blame it on Senator Godswill Akpabio and Mr Udom Emmanuel. Trust Akwa Ibom people! But earnestly speaking, that is being unfair to them. As things have turned out to be, in fact, the duo have rather been vindicated! This is shocking, to say the least!

Yes, nobody is denying the fact that Governor Umo Eno has committed nearly 20 billion Naira for the payment of gratuities to retirees in Akwa Ibom State. That is not the bone of contention.

His aggressive rural development has found expression in diverse ways, including the 80 road projects either initiated by him or inherited from the immediate past administration, some of which are already inaugurated while others are on-going. Of course, these are there for everyone to see.

They include the recently commissioned 3.3km Idua Road in Eket and the emergency intervention works on the gully erosion ravaged Afia Nsit Road in Eket which had crippled business activities around the area, and stopped worshippers from accessing their places of worship. But Governor Umo Eno changed their story for good.

The completion of the 24km Airport Road expansion project (from Ring Road 3), internal roads in Shelter Afrique, - 1.8km Paul Ekpo Crescent, 1.0km Emmanuel Ekon Avenue, 0.8km Obot Emene Street as well as 160m span Nto Ide - Ikot Amba bridge with 800m approach road linking Obot Akara with Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, corroborate this assertion. But considering the issue on ground, what explanation will the Governor give?

No doubt, the Phase II of the Victor Attah International Airport Parallel Taxiway and Rapid Exit are now ready courtesy of the governor's commitment to aviation sector development which is more pronounced in giving more "wings" to Ibom Air. But Governor Umo Eno has a big question to answer.

Similar question is written boldly on the white boards of Christ the King Model Primary School and Ewet Model Primary School. These are models of how the governor wants primary schools and education to be attractive to the children. It is fitted with sports facilities and accommodation for teachers, while books, school bags, shoes and uniforms will be given to the pupils free to support their parents and guardians.

In the early hours of his administration, Governor Umo Eno had instituted a 100 Million Naira Education Trust Fund for students in tertiary institutions with physical disabilities irrespective of their States of origin. He has facilitated the payment of bursary to Akwa Ibom students in tertiary institutions. But the worry is how the people will believe his answer to their question.

Of course, Governor Eno has prioritised agriculture, crusading the sermon of everyone to return to the farm, as the only way to achieve food sufficiency. This necessitated his new policy of two Fridays public holiday within a month to allow civil servants go to the farm.

He had since flagged-off the Ibom Model Farms, modelled after the Shongai Farms which is like a modern day Garden of Eden. All of these are aimed at making food available, affordable and accessible in Akwa Ibom State, which is why agriculture is the leader of the pack in the acronym, ARISE Agenda, the governance compass of the Governor Umo Eno administration.

The Governor did not wait for the people to wait for harvest from the farm before they can eat. As a stop-gap, he launched the free food distribution programme which is targeted at the vulnerable, where each person captured in the social register is entitled to 5kg of rice, garri and beans respectively, and on a monthly basis. Facilitated through the Bulk Purchase Agency, the programme kills two birds with one stone - feeds the poor and empowers those in business.

A number of primary healthcare facilities are ready for the people. They include the primary health centre, Ikot Nkwo, among others.

In an unprecedented manner, Governor Umo Eno has launched a 400 Million Naira accelerator programme where 800 young entrepreneurs in the State were empowered with N500,000 each through the Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurship Development (Ibom LED), a practical approach to hatching entrepreneurs and planting the seed of prosperity on a fertile soil and in the appropriate rainy season. As he said, the 800 people will be joined by 4200 others before the expiration of his first four years in office.

To complement this worthy initiative of the governor, there is the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre which is aimed at sharpening the skills of the youths to launch them into the big league of economic activities, equipped with relevant certification.

He who fed the poor is also giving shelter to the homeless through the ARISE Compassionate Homes, of which the Phase I is ready. The project aims at building four hundred homes to widows and vulnerable members of the society across the 31 local government areas of State over four years.

Governor Eno has sustained the peace and security of the State, with the initiative of the Ibom Community Watch where thousands of Akwa Ibom youths are recruited into a security programme that complements the statutory security agencies, and serving them with actionable reliable information, and this has upped the ante of the security game in the State.

This is further enhanced through the regular donation of operational vehicles to security agencies, and other support necessities and initiatives. Yes, these are all lofty programmes, but the people are more interested in what he tells them. Otherwise, they will dismiss it as a lie.

This does not diminish commendation on Governor Eno for his magic-like action of the gully erosion Reclamation Project, where he is turning a lethal situation at Dominic Utuk Avenue -Etim Umana Street, into an attractive tourist centre.

The beautiful project has added to the long list of tourism development projects across the State, which has stenciled Akwa Ibom State on the tourism map of the world, and has already won the governor an award as the Tourism Governor of the Year, even when he is less than a year in office yet.

And then the governor's bipartisanship relationship with everyone, irrespective of political party platforms. He is deservingly the Ambassador of Unity of Akwa Ibom State, building bridges of unity across the State and country. He has, in a loveable way, made every Akwa Ibom person a proud stakeholder in the Akwa Ibom project, where there are no Senior Partners nor second class citizens.

His style of political inclusivity is topnotch, and Akwa Ibom State is happy. In fact, he is not just building bridges, he is a bridge himself, and a formidable one at that. Akwa Ibom walks through this golden bridge to unite with hitherto perceived disconnects. But the governor is facing a critical problem.

The process of actualising Ibom Deep Seaport is on because the governor believes in the flourish of the freight sector with attendant economic gains. He is leveraging on his fantastic relationship with the federal government, from the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio to President Bola Tinubu, to achieve that for Akwa Ibom State. While the people appreciate that, they are eager to hear him on their concern.

Meanwhile, it important to recall that Governor Eno's predecessor and former boss, Mr Udom Emmanuel had prophesied that Governor Eno will do more than him, the same way Senator Godswill Akpabio told journalists that he will love to be remembered as a governor who produced the best governor to succeed him. The rest is now history!

Or is Governor Umo Eno effectively utilizing this political genetical dominance? Is it a case of "complexion" of his "father" and the "height" of his "grandfather"? Or how else do we explain these inexplicable packed accomplishments by Governor Umo Eno?

Honestly, when one looks at these accomplishments of Governor Umo Eno, it is difficult if not impossible to believe that the Governor has been able to achieve all of this within one year. This is where he has the problem and needs to convince his people.

How will Governor Eno convince the people that his own one year is also made up of 12 months? Is it possible to reconcile the numerous achievements with just one year in office? It will look like a lie, erroneously though! The governor needs to be deliberate to convince the world that all of these were squeezed inside one year because of his passion and commitment to serving his people.

Otherwise, it will be believed that he "smuggled" more months upon months into the known 12 months that make up one year. This is unbelievable! This is a big headache for the governor!

Although he gave a 13th month salary to the civil servants in Akwa Ibom State, that was part of his workers friendly relationship, and cannot translate into the expansion of his own one year. How will it be explained to the world that this is the normal one year that they know? Governor Eno must need to reconcile this.

But from whatever angle one looks at it, there is a beautiful story in Akwa Ibom State told with the heart and hand of a great leader, model politician, and fantastic governor. The story is so pleasant to the ears, but the details are beyond the capacity of one year!

Governor Eno has succeeded in making people feel that either they have failed mathematics or mathematics has failed them in calculating the capacity and possibility of achieving all of these in one year. That will look like an overload for the year. Even the mathematician they call Calculus cannot calculate this load of good governance. It is truthfully unbelievable!

And because the situation is difficult to reconcile and convince the people, let the accomplishments be placed on a scale calibrated with development, prosperity and happiness. On that scale, the reading of the measurement will indicate that God loves Akwa Ibom State that is why he brought Governor Umo Eno for a time like this!

Since he is giving Akwa Ibom State the best leadership, he only deserves the best prayers from the people. Hence, let the prayer for Governor Eno be the song by Senator Godswill Akpabio during the State Banquet for senators in Uyo: "it is well with your soul today".

Indeed, it is well with the political soul of Governor Umo Eno, and from one year, he will continue to give Akwa Ibom State the dividends of good governance till he does his eight years!

Jones has no foot for shoes, yet he is too creative to allow his stoutly stylish governor a step without some pairs of bespoke designs shoes.

Today under one roof, eight hundred entrepreneurs gathered after completing months of rigorous business training and certification by IBOM LEAD. With this Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development Center,they did not have to travel to Lagos to attend Lagos Business School. Neither did they have to part with hundred of thousands for such sort after masterclasses. The entrepreneur governor has put the structure, makes available funding, and further attract best brains to chisel ignorance and superstition out of the minds of those he would be proud to call my Ambassadors. So the journey for the making of a new community has started with business as the centerpiece.

Each of these 800 graduands benefits from the pool of 400 million naira. To each, a seed of 500 thousand naira is committed to growing their businesses. These Ambassadors from the Entrepreneurship Accelerator Programme (EAP), are ready to leap out of poverty after series of mentorship to set a new paradigm as a community of business leaders and wealth creators.

Amongst those cheerful entrepreneurs is one Jones. Like everyone in that cohort, Jones' sight refuses to see disabilities. Whether he leaps or crawl is immaterial. He saw a season, and an opportunity with a governor who crawled from a five room to leading a sterling consortium of hospitality brands before public service forced him to step aside. A governor whose message remains, "If I can, then you can' . . He says he is committed to lifting five thousand crawling Joneses to enviable heights of business leadership, and a realm of Independence where poverty no longer recognizes their address if they stoop to conquer. . .

Jones could have abandoned his race to success. Competing on the tartan with turbo racers would have curried sympathy. Some would have excused him for dropping out, after all, while some drove or taxied for months to this business school, his was a daily communion with the dust and floods. But as they say, there's a day for everybody. Today was Jones's.

On the roll call for different categories of cheque presentation was the CEO JONES SHOE MANUFACTURING. He has raced to the finishing line, and would never let go. He knew he needed a renewed vigor to set new record as another race begins.

Smart and grateful Jones did something instructive while crawling to receive his cheque from a trailblazing governor who humanizes politics while running government as business.

He(Jones) would not pontificate value with nothing, not when EAP slogan is PREMIUM OR NOTHING... with him was his signature bespoke shoes for Mr Style. Of course the ever stylish governor receiving his gift, raised Jones's bespoke with admiration while ovation rain from the crowd.

At that point it was certain for many who follow Umo Eno keenly that an end has come where all Jones does is watch haplessly at the pool of favour whenever the waters are stirred. Umo Eno in his time- tested humility, bend towards Jones, smiling at his new found friend. We have seen him do this over and again. He again beat the gulf between his towery statue, and Jones's diminishing height. There, he handed this creative tug a cheque of 500 hundred thousand naira, directed the Health Commissioner to ensure Jones is mobile. Not done, "Mr Compassion", as he is popularly called, laced Jones's bouquet of seed fund with extra One Million.

No doubts, Umo Eno has proved his heartbeat for Akwa Ibom people is entrepreneurship, knowledge transfer and wealth creation. It took Umo Eno's arrival to Hiltop Mansion for Bank of Industry (BOI) to find their way to Akwa Ibom State where a startup of over two billion went to their vault to support small and medium businesses in the state. Not done, the governor direct commencement of programmes at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Center to train and certify youths to skill up Nigeria's economy. This center which is affiliated to University of Lagos will start activities on May 20th and is expected to service a number of industries and households thereby empowering their trainees, generate revenue and be self sufficient.

This center's faculty include Confectionery/Culinary; Fabrication; Animal Husbandry; Production etc. This center will compliment IBOM LEAD whose fashion faculty is making thousands of uniforms for pupils and students in public schools as well as footwears as school resumes.

With these structures and more, Umo Eno has infused life into the arteries of local businesses thereby strengthening the feeble limps of many Joneses to ARISE above cultural, economic, social and mental limitations through a Special Purpose Vehicle of the golden era called is the ARISE AGENDA

It was a glamorous outing, as Essu Nlap Oro, a renowned socio-cultural organisation in Oro nation, yesterday, decorated Senator Ekong Sampson with 'Iyara', a symbol of Essu Nlap Oro traditional authority in honour of the Senator as an Oro friendly representative, in a ceremony held at the Shakespeare Hall, Watbridge Hotel & Suites, Uyo.

In his address, the international president of Essu Nlap Oro, Ulap (Pastor) Brightsolution Umoh expressed satisfaction over the humane disposition and peaceful nature of Senator Sampson and his Senate representation. He said the Essu Nlap Oro was pleased to be identified with the National Assembly man.

According to him, one of the corporate objectives of Essu Nlap Oro was to collaborate with government of the day for peaceful coexistence and attraction of development to Oro nation. Pastor Umoh hinted the above as one of the reasons for their visit - to cement a symbolic relationship between the organisation and the office of Akwa Ibom South Senator.

He cited focused representation in the Senate, bridge building disposition, the appointment of Oro son and community leader as Senior Legislative Aide in his office, donation of cars to his constituents, empowerment of over 700 constituents with business and educational grants - first of its kind in the district, as some of the other reasons the group deemed it fit to honour Senator Sampson.

Umoh equally highlighted others to include appointment of another Oro son as the secretary of the Senatorial Empowerment Committee, job creation at the federal and state government constituents across the district as well as facilitating the construction of a Computer-based JAMB Centre at St. Vincent Secondary School, Oti Oro in Okobo Local Government Area, among others.

In his response Senator Sampson commended Essu Nlap Oro for the honour bestowed him, describing Oro as a nation of elites. Senator Sampson, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, stated that Oro was fully captured in his budget, starting from the installation of Street Light in Urueoffong/ Oruko, Civic Center in Udung Uko, installation Street Lights in Oron, Road Project in Mbo, as well as the already mentioned ICT Center in Okobo.

Senator Sampson assured that he will continue to facilitate more opportunities for his constituents, especially in employment, as well as well ensure that the region gained maximally as an oil producing area.

Senator Sampson thanked Governor Umo Eno for showing that he was a lover of Oro and commended Oro leaders for displaying team spirit in their conduct. Senator Sampson in appreciation of his membership, presented the sum of 1million naira in support of the organisation.

High point of the visit was presentation of the group's full regalia and paraphernalia as well as decoration of the national legislayor with 'Iyara' - a symbol of the Essu Nlap Oro traditional authority.

It was compassion taken to another level when the Transition Committee Chairman for Nsit Atai Local Government Council, Akwa Ibom State , Hon. Emem Ibanga, mobilized the physically challenged in the area to celebrate the 60th birthday anniversary of the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno .

Setting the tone for the bash at the Council Secretariat ,Odot , Hon Emem Ibanga premised the celebration on the instruction of the governor who made public his preference for a low keyed celebration with the vulnerable and physically challenged to the usual flamboyant and lavished show of affluence in such celebrations. 

The Council boss spoke of Governor Umo Eno's disposition towards the vulnerable and his determination to offer them a new lease of life to enable integrate into the society, stressing that circumstance of life should not cause anybody created by God to be relegated to the background.

She therefore urged them not to be deterred by their condition but maximize their God given talents to raise the bar in their daily endeavors , assuring that Gov the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno's administration is designed to accommodate every interest particularly the vulnerable and those in the rural communities.  

Spokesman for the Physically Challenged, Elder Edet Ossom, expressed appreciation to the Chairman for identifying with them on the occasion of the birthday celebration of the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, and alongside Mercy Archibong, Aniefiok Akpan, congratulated Governor Eno on his birthday ,wishing him robust health, long life, wisdom and God's blessings as he deliver on his mandate to the people of the State .

At the event, the Physically Challenged danced to music, cut birthday cake as they received gifts from the Council Chairman to the delight of the Vice Chairman, Elder Ekoi Obong Transition Committee members  and staff of the Council who witnessed the colourful birthday celebration .

One of Nigeria's finest columnists Haroon Aremu, on April 16, 2024 in an epic article opined that amidst the chaos and corruption in Nigeria, there are still those who stand as beacons of hope. These, according to him "are the leaders who, despite facing myriad of challenges, remain steadfast in their commitment to uplifting the nation and its people. Their unwavering dedication serves as a deep contrast to the rampant greed and self-interest that often circulate the political arena". The above, no doubt, is a perfect description of the people-centric governor of Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Umo Eno, who against all odds, has distinguished himself as a leader who feels what the people feel, and understands the language of the poor and the rich. He has severally suspended protocol and the official security boundaries, stripped himself of the governorship regalia and stoop low to meet people, interact with them and encourage them. This is only what a servant-leader who is intoxicated with a sense of respect for humanity can do.

Perhaps, this empathetic disposition of Pastor Umo Eno which has punctuated his government at every point in time stems from his humble beginning, and the character of placing humanity over personal gains, a virtue he has built and sustained over the years. This has, however earned him the badge of an advocate of the principle of humanism which places the value of humans above materials and objects.

With all sense of modesty, Pastor Eno is a beacon of hope to people of all class, and has condemned himself to the service of humanity capped with a level of empathy that has never been heard of by a Nigerian politician. Placing humanity at the center of his administration has undoubtedly given his leadership a human face; where the rich and the poor, the privileged and the downtrodden, the elders and the youth, men and women have a stake and sense of belonging.

Everything about Pastor Eno represents humanity, in line with the age long truth that the essentiality of human existence is service to humanity, a motto amplified by the Rotary Club- Service Above Self.
And without mincing words, on completion of his tenure, he will indeed leave behind a legacy of service and selflessness, all for the sake of humanity.

Few weeks after assumption of office, the governor without prior invitation apart from being moved by empathy when he sighted two coffins in a compound at Ekpene Ukim, in Uruan Local Government Area, branched the venue of the burial. Imagine the shock and surprise on the faces of the people who never dreamt that the number one citizen in the state would be their guest. To cut the long story short, Uduakobong Effiong, the only child of the deceased has since been established with a state of the art sewing equipment and shop, courtesy of the governor's benevolence.

On several occasions, the governor had stopped to buy fruits from women selling at different locations, and equally empowered them. That's the kind of leader occupying the hilltop mansion today. He feels the pains of the people and shares in their joy as well.

Just few days ago when he returned from an official assignment, he was briefed on the unfortunate incident that befell an Akwa Ibom daughter in the boat mishap that claimed lives of other Nollywood crew members during a film production in Anambra State. Moved with compassion over the sad story, he went straight to meet the deceased family at Ikot Udoma, Eket. After consoling the family members, he was moved with compassion when he heard that the deceased 's dream was to see her two siblings who are undergraduates become graduates. The governor gave scholarship to the two siblings, offered automatic employment to the elder sister and gave order for the building of a befitting home for the parents.

Yesterday, his devotion to the promotion of human welfare moved his milk of kindness which never runs dry to flow to the path of a gardener who had served at the Government House for over 30 years. The governor who consistently rewards diligent service gave the man's son automatic employment . Also in appreciation of the staff and security team at the complex, the governor donated a special welfare allowance in the sum of 10 Million Naira to all the staff on duty and commended them for their hard work and contributions to the bureaucracy and the security of the State.

With every sense of humility and decency, Governor Eno has honestly demystified leadership and the position of the governor by still relating with the people and humbling himself to the barest minimum at every given opportunity.

As the saying goes, "charity begins at home", this summarizes the reason why Pastor Eno came back to Akwa Ibom to start a business instead of staying in Lagos where he grew up. It was a strong desire to help Akwa Ibom people that made him to relocate to the state and started with just 5 rooms, and grew it consistently to a conglomerate that we see today.

Since the scripture has affirmed that he who is faithful in little, much shall be given to him, heaven smiled on Pastor Umo Eno during the 2023 governorship election, and the good people of Akwa Ibom state massively voted him as governor.

Despite the over 25 litigations instituted against him, he wriggled his way out by the grace of God. People had thought that now that his mandate had been sealed through the affirmation of his victory by the supreme Court, he would pay back. But no, revenge is strange to him. Even the exalted office of the governor and all the privileges therein, has not taken away who he is, especially the compassionate aspect of him.

His milk of kindness still flows to individuals, families, groups, associations, civil servants, the political class, students, business people, women, youth, the elderly, the less privilege, the list is endless.

After winning the election, he called on those who lost the election to work with him for the good of the state. How many Nigerian politicians would do that?
That is why many people always opine that Pastor Eno doesn't behave like a contemporary politician. He is a preacher of love and forgiveness, and can work comfortably with people from all walks of life and political affiliations. He has not relented in preaching support for the President, the Senate President, Ministers and others who are from other political parties just for the purpose of humanity and the welfare of all and sundry.

It is humanity that made him to set up the Community Watch to complement other security apparatus in state for the overall safety of the people.
Humanity made him to handle intervention projects like the flood control drainage system in some parts of the state. Humanity equally made him show empathy with those that mourn, and celebrate with those that celebrate. Even as a governor, he still has time to visit and attend events of people he had known before, not minding his position now.

It is still his compassionate disposition that inspired him to build houses for the less privileged people in all the 31 Local Government Areas in the state, and some are still under construction. That virtue also instigated him to initiate the bulk food purchase programme, distribute free food to the poorest of the poor, among others. He did all for humanity.

He has carried out free medical outreaches in all the 3 senatorial districts of the state, and over 10,000 residents of the state have benefited from the initiative.
It did not end there. The governor has consistently paid gratuities and pensions to retired civil servants in the state. He has also initiated a welfare package for the elderly and senior citizens in the state.

There is no gainsaying that most projects embarked upon by Pastor Umo Eno are projects for humanity, just as the summary of the ARISE Agenda is humanity.

Like our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who came for the salvation of mankind, Pastor Eno came for the welfare of the people, and this he has passionately performed on a daily basis.

Today, as he climbs the 60th floor of life, may his loving, caring and "welfaric" drive usher him into a year full of peace, sound health and more wisdom to serve humanity.

We propose a toast to a great humanitarian.

A socio political group Advocates for Good Governance and Humanity (Renewed Hope Agenda) has expressed delight with the performance of Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State describing his desire to work for the success of the state across partisan party lines as legendary.

The group which claimed total allegiance to the All Progressive Party (APC) and President Bola Tinubu made the assertion during a Press conference with journalists on Friday in Abuja.

Director General of the group, "As a good governance driven group, we are delighted to observe the unprecedented governance shown by the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno across sectors.

"Although he is of a different political party from ours, we are compelled to commend him to serve as a spur to other Nigerians occupying political positions.

They added, "First of all, Governor Umo Eno has broken the walls of political party pettiness in his style of leadership.

“Renewed Hope Agenda observes with keen interest that immediately after election, Governor Eno has reached out to all stakeholders in the Nigerian project irrespective of their political parties.

“Such is seen in his smooth relationship with President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other top APC leaders across Nigeria.

"In his home State, Akwa Ibom, Governor Umo Eno has ensured that Akwa Ibom people are united even with diverse political backgrounds. In an unprecedented manner, he has a good working relationship with all the political appointees and stakeholders of the State across party lines, a reciprocation of which makes State functions to be attended by members of all political parties.

The group highlighted that Governor Eno has ensured that the entire State is on one page with the sole agenda of attracting development to the State, rather than being blinded by party sentiments. They advised other governors in Nigeria to borrow a leaf from Governor Eno for the needed political development of the entire Nigeria. The governor has greatly impressed us.

They traced the quantum of accomplishments the State has witnessed in his less than a year to the governor's focus on his job which is devoid of distractions in the name of politics or political parties rivalry stressing that it for this reason that Akwa Ibom State ranks enviably high among comity of States in Nigeria in achievements.

They explained, "this is a product of having a good leader in power. The impact of good governance in Akwa Ibom State is seen in all the sectors of development, from agriculture to infrastructure, flying on the wings of the ARISE Agenda which serves as the governance bible of the administration.

"It is no mean feat that the administration has already disbursed over N112 billion Naira for road infrastructure since May 2023, funding 39 new road projects and completing old projects.

"The agricultural revolution in the State is quite impressive.

“From the Ibom Model Farms project to other food sufficiency and security plans, Akwa Ibom State is closing in on food availability, affordability and accessibility.

“This is complemented by the free food distribution programme that is driven by the novel Bulk Purchase Agency of Governor Umo Eno.

"Rural development is on auto pilot, where the governor is opening up rural communities to attract the needed development to the doorsteps of the people.

"Education is taking centre stage, with model schools springing up, and, some ready for inauguration.

"There is also healthy health programmes where the governor is connecting the dots in the healthcare sector, with special attention to the primary healthcare which is witnessing the construction of new facilities in the sector.

"Youth empowerment and entrepreneurship is receiving adequate attention. N400 million Naira has been approved for disbursement to 800 trainees of the Ibom LED as grant of N500,000 each.

"Meanwhile, the governor has restored smile on the faces of the retirees in the State having approved nearly 20 billion Naira for the payment of gratuities to these retirees.

"To cap it all, the compassionate governor has approved the increment of pension for pensioners who retired before 2012 to meet up with the current economic realities in the country.

“The governor with a golden heart has impressed us the more with the ongoing construction of the ARISE Compassionate Homes across the 31 local government areas of the State where 400 Houses are to be built and handed over to the poor, especially widows and their children.

“These houses have boreholes and solar powered lights.

“Under the Direct Labour Agency, some projects have already been completed, while 19 are ongoing, including the 1 project per local government area initiative of the governor.

The list is endless, and we are resolved not be be blinded by political party differences to fail to acknowledge and commend the governor for being a worthy leader of his people, while calling on others to emulate him.

Renewed Hope Agenda stands for good governance with attendant development, and anywhere we find it, we must bring it to public attention irrespective of the background of who is behind such great feat.
