Politics / A'IBOM Govt Renews Bid to Actualize Ibom Deep Seaport Project by Browndiary(m): 9:59pm On Mar 13
... repositions implementation committee

There are renewed hopes towards the actualisation of the Ibom Deep Seaport, as Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, moves to reposition the technical committee in charge of the implementation of the project.

As part of efforts in this direction, the governor took members of the Technical Committee on the Implementation of Ibom Deep Seaport round the new office accommodation assigned to them on the third floor of Dakkadda Towers, the state-owned 21-storey smart building on Udo Udoma Banking Layout, Uyo.

According to the governor, who rose from a meeting with the committee and some technical partners, the move to allocate the new office space to the committee was necessitated by the need to avail them with requisite and befitting infrastructure to aid the realization of the Deep Seaport project in line with resolutions at the meeting.

He assured that with the steps taken by the State government in recent times, including the award of contract for construction of the 13.6Km Orukim-Unyenghe-Universal Energy Road to Ibom Deep Seaport site, the allocation of the new befitting accommodation among others, pursuit for the Seaport project was back on track.

"We have been working on the Ibom Deep Seaport, but I think it is now time for us to revitalize that committee. So today we had a meeting to do a proper review of all our outstanding matters. They didn't have a befitting office, so government has now brought them here to have one. We are going to begin to have investors come in and all of that.

"I think we have had a good discussion and we have commenced the whole process again. What I can say is that we are all ready now, we are back and you will begin to see activities geared towards the realization of the Ibom Deep Seaport," the governor stated.

On her part, the Chairman, Technical Committee on the Implementation of Ibom Deep Seaport, Mrs. Mfon Usoro, thanked the governor for the office accommodation and other forms of support to the committee which she described as a demonstration of his commitment to the project.

She affirmed that, the project will not only place Akwa Ibom State on the global maritime map, but serve as a major economic gateway to West and Central Africa.

Mrs. Usoro maintained that, with Governor Umo Eno's gesture, committee members and consultants are rejuvenated to work even more assiduously towards the accomplishment of the project.

Politics / Gov Umo Eno Invests over N99m in Akwa Ibom Students via Bursary by Browndiary(m): 3:14pm On Mar 04
. . . releases another N100M for continuation of payment

By Ubon Marcus

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno has released an additional sum of N100M for the next phase of the ongoing payment of bursaries to undergraduate students of Akwa Ibom origin studying in tertiary institutions across the country.

This tranch, as explained by the Personal Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Affairs, Comrade Wisdom Emmanuel, is a continuation of the bursary payment process that began on November 20, 2023, for the 2023/2024 academic session.

According to information on the State Bursary Portal obtained on March 3, 2024, 9,980 students have so far been paid since the commencement of the exercise, making it a total of Ninety Nine Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (N99,800,000.00) so far disbursed for the payment of bursaries to undergraduates by the Umo Eno administration.

This is in fulfilment of Pastor Umo Eno’s promise to the Akwa Ibom Students’ community during his electioneering days and also in furtherance of his educational goals in the ARISE Agenda.

A unique feature of the ongoing bursary payment exercise is the digitalization of the process—a novel initiative that has brought enhanced transparency to bursary payment in the state, exempted beneficiaries from meddlesome interlopers, and saved them from the inconveniences of travelling long distances down home to queue for days on end so as to present their documents for verification and screening before getting paid.

All they are required to do is visit the State Bursary Portal at wwwdotbursarydotakwaibomstatedotgovdotng, register for a bursary, input their details, proceed to create a log-in account, and upload their documents to the online portal for verification.

Once verified, the student’s bank account will be credited. It is that simple.

The Directorate of ICT and Digital Services, domiciled in the Office of the Governor, is saddled with the responsibility of managing the bursary portal, and so far, they have done a good job.

However, it must be noted that the bursary payment exercise will not run ad-infinitum as it is scheduled to close at midnight on April 30, 2024. Eligible students who have yet to register have ample time to do so before the portal closes on the aforementioned date.

Gov. Umo Eno’s monetary intervention in education goes beyond the payment of bursaries. Recall that upon assumption of office, he instituted a N100M educational trust fund for persons living with disabilities in the state. Payment has since commenced in the sums of N250,000.00 and N300,000.00 each, which have been paid to undergraduate and postgraduate physically challenged students, respectively.

A N10M scholarship to the winner of the 2023 Heirs Life National Essay Competition, N5M law school grant to a physically challenged Uniuyo Law student, etc. also stand to the Governor’s credit.

As the bursary payment progresses, students must be weary of mischief-makers who may attempt to defraud them; therefore, it is pertinent to emphasise that they can only apply for, and receive their bursaries via the aforementioned state bursary portal.

They must maintain vigilance at all times, be wary of cloned websites claiming to handle bursary disbursements, and note that the state government will never request money or sensitive banking details from them; hence, they should avoid disclosing sensitive information on unauthorised platforms.

The AKS Bursary Support Team is available to attend to inquiries via email at bursary@akwaibomstate.gov.ng.

Politics / That Franklyn Isong’s Manufactured lies and Smear Campaign by Browndiary(m): 11:02pm On Feb 23
Press Release

Our attention has been drawn to a cocktail of lies and intentionally manufactured and malicious blackmail- laden article currently floating in a section of the social media platforms, sourced, garnished and served by Mr. Franklyn Isong who heads a nebulous civil society organization: Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network( CHRAN.)

Franklyn Isong, through the Organization in an article headlined, “Eno in soup as group demands account of multi- billion Naira from Tinubu”, made various factually incorrect assertions, including that“, Abuja released the sum of 5 billion Naira and 3 thousand bags of rice to the Eno Administration as palliatives to cushion the effects of the withdrawal of fuel subsidy.”

It is shocking and logically confounding that Franklyn Isong could maliciously push this lie. Franklyn Isong, was and is still a Member of the State Palliative Committee, representing the civil society organizations which was inaugurated by Governor Umo Eno, last year.

The Committee was celebrated for the transparent manner the palliatives were disbursed and distributed. To date, no one has complained of not receiving the palliatives.

The State Government received the sum of 2 billion Naira from the Federal Government and this was given as a loan facility which the State Government is expected to pay back. The State Government, as we speak has been asked to pay back the loan. No new funds have been released to the State Government, and once the balance of the remaining 3 billion Naira is paid, Franklyn Isong, as a Member of the Palliatives Committee will be informed. Again, it bears repeating, that, of the promised 5 billion Naira from the Federal Government, it is the 2 billion Naira that has been released to the State Government so far as a loan facility which the State is expected to pay back.

The State Government, had augmented the kind gesture of the Federal Government with additional billions of Naira and several additional bags of rice, which Franklyn Isong, as a Member of the Committee, is well aware of.

Mr. Isong again, made another factually incorrect assertion when he said an additional 30 billion Naira has been given to each State of the Federation, quoting a source attributed to the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, CON.

If Franklyn Isong is making a prohectic pronouncement of an expected 30 Billion Naira to the State coffers, we join him to say “ may the prediction come to pass and quickly too.” For now, however, the State Government has not received such funds as confirmed by the Deputy Chairman of Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum, His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

We know that this is a season for grandstanding and indulging in blame- game, but we believe a civil organization that is worth the name on its letterhead should do a minimum fact- checking before rushing to make wild and libelous assertions.

Governor Umo Eno has run a very transparent government since his inauguration and has actually worked to cut the size of government, for which he has received plaudits from people across political lines.

He has been saying in the past one week, that we should exercise patience with the policies of the Tinubu Administration, and support him for the common good of all.

Stoking the embers of the society and inciting the populace at this already tensed atmosphere in the country, based on lies and smear campaigns, is sad and highly regrettable.

Franklyn Isong as a journalist, is not blind to the numerous people- centric acts of Governor Uno Eno since his inauguration, such as over 12 billion naira already paid for the settlement of gratuities and other benefits to retired public workers in the State, the bursary paid to students in tertiary institutions, the numerous rural access roads that have been flagged -off in several parts of the State, the N10billion injected for completion of inherited projects, the model primary schools and health centres billed for commissioning soon, regular payment of salaries, the Bill to set up the State Bulk Purchasing Agency, that will help reduce the soaring prices of our staple foods, the medical outreach programmes where thousands of our people have been given free medical diagnoses and treatment among other impactful interventions by the Eno Administration.

These are great interventions that have drawn great praise and commendations across political divides in the State to Governor Umo Eno.

While we concede that Franklyn Isong is entitled to his opinion, but let it be stated that he is not entitled to his facts.

Members of the public are advised to ignore this obviously sponsored piece by the Franklyn Isong -led CHRAN

“I had said during campaigns that we had a blueprint which centers on rural development.

“Now you can see that we were not making vain promises when we said that we will return to Obot Akara to build more economically viable roads and bridges that will open up the rural areas in line with our ARISE Agenda.

“I know that it was very embarrassing that you had to pass through another State to reach his own community”, the Governor said, and commended the neighbouring Abia State communities for peacefully relating with their Akwa Ibom neighbours.

He charged the community to cooperate with the contractors and thanked them for the huge reception accorded him and his entourage.

Governor Eno was also relentless in advising on the need for local government chairmen to complement his rural development gestures by engaging in farming and also solicited for more interest in farming from the populace.

“We are making it easier for you to farm by providing farm inputs and when you food items are ready, Government will mass purchase all your commodities at good rates”.

An indigene of the area and Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, was so emotional as he thanked the Governor for enduring the extreme bad access road, to still drive down and initiate the commencement of the road project, and pledged the resolve of the people of Obot Akara to support him always.

Village Head of Usaka Eteidung Williamson Otuekong thanked the Governor for visiting the area with development, adding that the Governor was the first since creation of the area, to set foot on the community.

He said the villagers usually had to pass through Abia State to access their kith and kin in other parts Akwa Ibom State but with the construction of the road and bridges, the community will now be economically viable.

Same sentiments were shared by Senator Chris Ekpenyong, a former deputy governor of the State who explained that he was relieved to witness the road constructed in his lifetime.

The Governor later went to Essien Udim local government area, where he flagged-off the Construction of a 16km Midim Atan Ikot Inyang-Ikot Akpan Ekpenyong-Etok Uruk Eshiet-Ikot Imonte Road with a 30m span bridge linking Essien Udim with Etim Ekpo local government area.

"For Governor Diri, the presence of the calibre of people you saw here today testifies eloquently to the kind of person he is. He is a man of peace. So we wish him well in his second term," the governor said.

Governor Eno advocated for an all-inclusive leadership approach where political biases are eschewed to enhance national development.

In his words, "If you observe, you see that we are working together as a team. I think that's the only way to build this country. We should strive to work across party lines and find a common solution to the problems facing our nation rather than throwing blames at people."

...says Cleric's entrepreneurial drive in line with the ARISE Agenda

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has congratulated the Primate Emeritus of The African Church, His Eminence, Dr. Emmanuel Udofia, on his 65th birth anniversary.

Speaking at the Cleric's Birthday Thanksgiving Service, held at the Primate Udofia Cathedral, Utu Abak, Abak LGA on Sunday, Pastor Eno described the Man of God as one who has contributed immensely to the Christian community in Nigeria and the growth of Akwa Ibom State in particular.

The State Governor who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi, at the Service which coincided with the Fund Raising Ceremony for the establishment of an Entrepreneurial Academy in Ika LGA, lauded the Primate Emeritus for keying into the ARISE Agenda of the current administration which focuses greatly on entrepreneurship and human capital development.

"First, we came here to congratulate the Primate Emeritus for attaining this great age and to ask God to add more years to him. You have served the Kingdom, the Nation, outside the Nation and the African Church in particular for the years that God granted you the permission. Yes, you're retired, but you're not tired. You are still serving in the temple.

"What excites the Governor the most is that you are not just coming for a birthday celebration, but using this opportunity to align with his vision through the establishment of a Skills Acquisition Centre, a priority area of the current administration, which is getting people to start from small and grow to be men and women of their own. The Governor is happy with you and will be in your Church for the launch of the Skills Acquisition Centre", the Governor added.

While thanking members of the Christian Faith for their prayers and support, Governor Eno, said he will continue to seek God's face, as well as collaborate with the Church and religious leaders for more development in the State.

"As a government, we owe God thanksgiving every day of our lives. God was there for us when we were in the trenches. We came here and surrendered to God, asking Him to take us through the trenches and that we will return to give Him thanks. There is no month that the Governor does not move out to different Churches to fulfill that promise. We will come specifically to the African Church to redeem our vow to God", he hinted.

"We were in and out of Court, with 26 court cases, but with the Supreme Court judgment, we are now finally confirmed. If in seven months, the Governor has been able to do what you all know about, in terms of development, how much more now that the seal has been stamped and confirmed? There are better days for Akwa Ibom State", he hinted.

On his part, the celebrator, His Eminence, Dr. Emmanuel Udofia, thanked God for His grace and for the giant strides recorded in The African during his tenure as Primate.

He appreciated the Governor as well as his entourage for finding time to attend the Service and further appealed for more support to fasttrack the planned establishment of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Academy to be situated in Ika LGA.

Earlier in his homily drawn from Psalms 103, the Archbishop of The African Church, Calabar Province, Most Rev'd Offiong Mensah, stressed the need for Christians to always acknowledge God in every situation, describing gratitude as "a multiplier for divine blessings."

The event which was chaired by the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, was graced by Members of the State Executive Council, Permanent Secretaries, Council Chairmen, former and serving government functionaries, the Clergy, amongst others.

Politics / Rural Development: Mkpat Enin TC Chairman Undertakes Road Rehabilitation by Browndiary(m): 1:20pm On Jan 25
As part of the fulfillment of her promise to bring development to communities in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, the Transition Committee Chairman, Hon. Mercy Bassey is opening up communities for development with the rehabilitation of rural roads.

Hon Bassey, earlier in the week, performed the flag-off of rehabilitation of the Ibekwe Akpanya – Ikot Akpaden link road, which had been impassable for over a year.

The road serves as a crucial link to major Federal, State, and privately owned institutions in the area, as well as the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone in Eastern Obolo, Onna/Ikot Abasi Local Government Areas of the state.

Lady Bassey, who was appointed as the Transition Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government by Governor Umo Bassey Eno just a month ago, approved the rehabilitation of the road to improve the commuting experience for motorists and other road users.

A woman leader in Mkpat Enin, Obonganwan Rose Brown, in a chat with journalists, disclosed that traders had ugly experiences due the road's deplorable state such losing their lives and goods while traveling to and from major markets in the area.

"I want to thank God for choosing our daughter as the Transition Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government, who understands the problems of the people and takes action for the common good," she said.

"Right from when she was an Acting Chairman, she renovated the Council Secretariat. Barely a month into her tenure, she has rehabilitated the only major road that we have in Mkpat Enin."

Others expressing their appreciation included the former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chapter Chairman in the area, Hon. Nkereuwem Akai, youth enthusiast Godswill Okon Sampson, and Anthony Christopher Udoudo.

They highlighted Lady Bassey's performance, noting her previous achievements during her tenure as Acting Chairman for 8 months.

"We can see how she has improved the Ibekwe Akpanya – Ikot Akpaden road within barely a month in office," they commented. "We believe she can accomplish even more if given the opportunity to serve as the elected chairman of the Council."

They also mentioned her positive impact on security, citing commendation from the Divisional Police Officer for her efforts in subduing criminal activities in Ibiaku and Ikpa-Ikono Clans, areas where kidnappers had previously been active.

"Our Chairman has already begun grading roads from Ibekwe Akpanya to Ikpa-Ikono Clan. She is also overseeing the drilling of a borehole at Ibianga Village in Ikpa-Ikono Ward 1, as well as the renovation of the Primary Health Center at Ibioete. We pray for her strength to continue her impactful work."

On his part, the Secretary of the Transition Committee, Pastor Afia Amos said "The Transition Chairman of Mkpat Enin Hon Mercy Bassey is silently loud on road grading. This portion of road in my village Ikot Esen was very bad. God bless the working Chairman immediately”.

Politics / UCCDA: Driving Town Planning Through Citizen’s ' Resistances by Browndiary(m): 8:09am On Jan 22
By Ubong Sampson

Town planning in developing countries has not been enjoying a smooth sail, and chiefly among the reasons, is the lack of public acceptance and cooperation which town planning regulations suffer in this part of the globe. The aforementioned reasons have been inflicting the journey to efficient physical planning and urbanisation, with one impeding factor or the other at virtually every stage of its progress. Strong resistance and non-compliance on the part of the citizens to regulations have been recorded by physical planning officers and these constitute such factors haphazardising development or its processes in the urban areas.

Through centuries past, cities have remained a constant source of economic growth and development to nations and their sub units. However, increased size and density of population in cities have generated high land costs, rent and transport cost, congestion and pollution, as well as increased social disorganisation. The condition is worse in developing countries where urban migration, over-utilisation of housing and infrastructure, persistent slums, and squatter settlements is detrimentally alarming.

Well, notably among reasons for the resistance and non-compliance are lack of public awareness of the planning laws and regulations; public misunderstanding of town planning activities; and sometimes, failure of the planners to protect the general public interest and bring them along in their activities. The capital city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state has had its own tale of these developmental impediments and their consequences, as several regulatory efforts on the part of government have been faced with unrepentant resistance by citizens in occupations of trading, commercial motoring, among others.

Driving through the capital city of Uyo, one cannot not help but notice with displeasure, how roadside traders have desecrated the beauty of roads and even areas set aside by government for recreational purposes with indiscriminate erection of kiosks, stalls. Some have even gone as far as encroaching into vehicle-purpose roads to display their goods, like what is obtainable at the Ibom Plaza axis of the city. The commercial motorists also contribute to these hazards daily by complying with touts to create illegal parks at strategic road junctions, consequently forcing artificial traffic even in areas that should naturally have no business with traffic congestion.

All of these, however, look ready to take a different turn, as the Uyo Capital City Development now led by Anietie Eka, has drawn a new approach to this tackle by letting the interfacing and negotiation process precede other moves in its action plan. A couple of times in the past, enforcing attempts by government against this menace ended with a wrong narrative on the internet by mischief makers whose aim was to rather draw sympathy for the traders who were being dislodged by enforcement officers. And of course, its commitment to maintaining a human face has always forced government to neutralise its enforcement processes with leniency.

The question is, has this leniency not made the defaulters to take government for granted, given the alarming rate which these anti-development activities have assumed? Long term residents of Uyo would recall the circumstances that forced government under Udom Emmanuel to resort to a flyover option at Ikot Oku Ikono junction. While citizens were always alerted to unleash roasting flames on government at each occasion of attempt to dislodge traders from the roadside, the interest of government was rather on the safety of lives, as the intermittent incidents of accidents at the said junction, especially involving heavy duty vehicles were hardly without claiming a life. And each time that happened, same citizens were up, also blaming the government for not putting up curbing measures. What a dilemma!

It is no longer news how much of media efforts the UCCDA has put up since Eka's assumption of office last December, creating awareness and announcing plans by the authority to commennce enforcement. Stepping further to complement the media efforts, the UCCDA Chairman, last weekend, led his management staff as well as newsmen on a monitoring tour of affected areas within the capital city. The purpose was to interface with the traders, motorists and relevant stakeholders, and perhaps, to also collate the most challenged citizens and challenging cases, to see how government can adjust and offer them soft landing grounds.

This is much of a departure from previous events where defaulters, during enforcement, will feign ignorance, using same as an open end to play victims. The UCCDA chairman, while interacting with this writer, had admitted his full consciousness of present economic challenges, while appreciating the defaulters for choosing the path of legitimate struggles for daily bread. However, he has stressed that development is a must, and it is the duty of government to ensure that developmental laws are not defaulted under any circumstances. But then, since the welfare of citizens is also part of the obligations of government, it has resorted to not dumping the baby along with the bath water, and this is by opening up these interfacing and negotiation channels with stakeholders in the affected industry.

With this friendly human face worn by government through the UCCDA, it will be no fault of government at then end of the day when the enforcement axe falls on any one for refusing to embrace this approach of diplomacy towards giving government the necessary compliance and cooperation in its shot at proper town planning and capital city development.

Politics / Group Partners A’ibom Waste Mgt Agency For Cleaner, Healthier State by Browndiary(m): 9:51pm On Oct 17, 2023
Tony Anichebe

Determined to contribute to the continuous cleanliness and green environmental sustainability achieved by the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), a socio-political group, A.R.I.S.E Ambassadors, has expressed their desire to collaborate with the Agency to raise awareness and educate the public on the importance of proper waste management.

The collaboration, according to the organisation, aims to build on the Agency’s accomplishments and further promote a clean and healthy environment as encapsulated in the A.R.I.S.E Agenda of the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.

These formed part of the discussions on Tuesday when the Board of Trustees, Executive Council and Members of the A.R.I.S.E Ambassadors met with the Chairman of AKSEPWMA; Obong Prince Ikim alongside his Board Members and Management Staff of the Agency at their office in Uyo Akwa ibom state.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the group, Rev. Richard Peters observed that in light of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) flood prediction, which included Akwa Ibom as one of the States at risk, the ARISE Ambassadors saw the need to partner with the AKSEPWMA to launch a campaign to educate the public on proper waste disposal and the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of waste on the drains.

According to him, “The campaign will involve a series of public education and awareness activities in urban and rural areas including radio and television jingles, as well as other community engagement programmes.
The goal Rev Peters reveals is to reach as many people as possible with the message that responsible waste disposal is essential to reducing the risk of flooding and its associated impacts.

He noted that the A.R.I.S.E Ambassadors will continue to mobilize support for Pastor Umo Eno, and praised the Chairman of AKSEPWMA for his willingness to collaborate on this important initiative.

On his own, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the A.R.I.S.E Ambassadors; Comrade Ernest Akpan, commended the good works of the AKSEPWMA Chairman Obong Prince Ikim citing the numerous awards Akwa Ibom has received for cleanliness under Obong Ikim’s leadership, including four consecutive awards for being the cleanest state in the country.

Mr Akpan expressed the group’s commitment to supporting Pastor Umo Eno’s efforts in protecting and preserving the environment as well as improving cleanliness in the State.

Meanwhile, in recognition of Obong Ikim’s outstanding support and dedication to the Umo Eno-led administration, the B.O.T. and Executive Council of the A.R.I.S.E Ambassadors unanimously honoured and bestowed him as a pillar of the organization.

Responding, Obong Prince Ikim thanked the organization for its creativity and collaboration in promoting the administration of Pastor Umo Eno.

While expressing his gratitude for the honour, the AKSEPWMA Chairman acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the group in projecting the A.R.I.S.E agenda of the governor.

Obong Ikim emphasized Governor Umo Eno’s passion for environmental management and sustainability and vowed to work tirelessly to support and advance the Governor’s vision.
He revealed that the Agency will continue to follow the “three E’s” strategy, focusing on Education, Enlightenment, and Enforcement to promote responsible environmental practices.

Emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving the Agency’s goals, Ikim expressed his gratitude to the A.R.I.S.E ambassadors for their support and commitment to partnering with the Agency to continue its successes.

One of the highlights of the visit was the presentation of the ARISE AMBASSADORS’ official t-shirt, face cap, and customized exercise books to Obong Ikim as well as his official induction as a “Pillar” of the organization.

Politics / Why Politicians are interested in Tearing Akwa Ibom apart by Browndiary(m): 7:45pm On Oct 17, 2023
BEING A STATEMENT FROM AKWA IBOM YOUNG LEADERS FORUM

In continuation of the ethnic war waged against the Ibibio of Akwa Ibom State, a communique purportedly emanating from a meeting of the THE CONVERGE OF TRADITIONAL RULERS COUNCIL/STAKEHOLDERS FROM ANNANG, ORON AND OBOLO ETHNIC GROUPS IN AKWA IBOM held yesterday has been circulating to dare the Ibibio by those who believe they now call the shots in Nigeria.

This will not be the first time of such gang up against the Ibibio except that the sponsors are hiding behind the amended Traditional Rulers Council law, which led to the inauguration of the Oku Ibom Ibibio as the President-General of the Supreme Traditional Rulers Council of Akwa Ibom State.

From the tone and letters of the said communique, the Senate President who has been hailed to high heaven for sponsoring the attack on Ibibio, is simply saying that he can put hand in the mouth of Ibibio and remove because they do not have teeth.

He has embolden them to show total disregard for the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno because the Governor is an Ibibio son.

If this issue were to have come up during the wild and heartless administration of Senator Godswill Akpabio as the Governor, will he have tolerated all this insults he is sponsoring against Governor Umo Eno over a matter that is already signed into law?

That is the same Akpabio that is telling his people to boycott State Government events just to spite the Ibibio, in line with his threats to make Akwa Ibom State ungovernable for Governor Umo Eno because the Ibibio are not supposed to be heard whether they are majority or minority.

We thought that Senator Godswill Akpabio should have allowed sleeping dogs to lie. Up till today, his administration is yet to account for the death of prominent Ibibio sons including the paramount ruler of Nsit Ubium local government area. We are yet to forget those ones, now because he is the Senate President of Nigeria, he has taken his war against the Ibibio to another dimension masking the amended TRC law. What does Akpabio really want?

This said amended Traditional Rulers Council law was wholly supported by all the paramount rulers. Today, Senator Akpabio has asked his kinsmen and others he has recruited and paid heavily to deny their involvement just to spite the Ibibio, and embarrass the Governor for the governor's only sin of coming from the Ibibio stock. Senator Akpabio boasts (and his people are revelling on that) that with his position as the Senate President, President Bola Tinubu is in his palms hence they should do whatever they want against the Ibibio because he is there to protect them.

Granted that Ibibio are the majority in the State, the liberalness of Ibibio to other sub ethnic groups is second to none in the whole of Nigeria. This has reflected in the distribution of positions and infrastructure across the State.

Today, the number one beneficiary of Ibibio's benevolence, Senator Godswill Akpabio is the leader of the gang that is piercing the Ibibio and showing it to our faces.

Without Ibibio, Akpabio would not have become the governor of Akwa Ibom State. Immediately he became, fought tooth and nail to bring down all the Ibibio who helped him climb the ladder including his former, Arc Obong Victor Attah, Ambassador Sam Edem, Senator John Udoedehghe, Obong Umana Umana, Obong Nsima Ekere and many others. This time around, he has turned his sword towards the traditional institution, swearing that he must deal with Oku Ibom Ibibio and disgrace the Ibibio.

It is very insulting for the Senate President to co-ordinate a meeting with the sole aim of ensuring that the traditional rulers disobey the governor of the State in line with the war declared against Ibibio.
We are not unaware that Senator Akpabio has been sponsoring all the attacks on Oku Ibom Ibibio, Governor Umo Eno and Ibibio because of an already existing law. But this nocturnal arrangements to embolden to insult the governor for inviting the paramount rulers for a meeting by saying that they will never listen to whatever the governor will say at the meeting is a height of embarrassment on the governor, and an affront on the Ibibio. Does Akpabio really have conscience? This is a governor that has been giving him respect that he never merited but he is bent on displaying his clannishness and ethnic bigotry just to destroy anything Ibibio in Akwa Ibom State. And people still address him as a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State.

We are saddened that other sub ethnic groups have allowed themselves to be smuggled into the needless fight.

We urge the traditional rulers to be reminded of the fact that there is a governor and government in the State. Now that their sponsor-in-chief has given them a brochure of the Governor's invitation they should attend, and the ones they should not attend, and that when they meet with the governor, they should decide whether to greet the governor or not, and only tell a sitting governor the things he has sent them to tell him, when the law catches up on the paramount rulers, let it not form another topic for non-existent ethnic domination.

The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio should be reminded that he did not become a Senate President to fight Ibibio. He should know that there is a limit to patience. All those proxy attacks he has executed using his brothers and aides are not unknown by the Ibibio. The maturity displayed by Ibibio should not be taken for cowardice. Akpabio has dared Ibibio enough. Nothing should concern him about the amended TRC law. He is neither a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly nor a paramount ruler. Enough should be enough. Ibibio are not weaklings. He may have succeeded in ridiculing the Ibibio and score his cheap political points. Let it end there. The office of the President-General of the Supreme Traditional Rulers Council in Akwa Ibom State is a creation of law, and can only be repealed through law. Akpabio is taking the law into his hands. He is not the only opportunist in Nigeria. He is not the first Senate President and will not be the last. Akpabio should allow Ibibio to be!

Politics / Amended TRC Law: Appreciating The New Normal For Global Recognition by Browndiary(m): 9:11am On Oct 16, 2023
A Response to Hon. Patrick Umoh, Member Representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency

Life is dynamic, and its dynamism depends on several factors. By that same token, institutions, kingdoms and empires equally change in their operations. Governments at all levels from time to time change their policies and programmes in line with economic changes in order to achieve their goals. It was Jim Rohn that said "Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” A popular Chinese Proverb added that “The wise adapt themselves to circumstances, as water moulds itself to the pitcher.” This is to say that change is constant in any progressive society, and the dynamism of life is what gives birth to review/amendment of laws.

The review or amendment of existing laws as the case maybe is a standard practice all over the world. Amendments allow laws and policies to be refined over time rather than replaced outright.
Local, state, and federal laws can be changed through the ratification of amendments. Legislative bodies in the U.S. and other democracies in the world operate on the premise that laws and policies may be refined over time. This can be done through new legislation or amendments to existing legislation.

Amendments are therefore primarily introduced to address circumstances and events that were not foreseen when a piece of legislation was initially signed into law. The most familiar example of this process is, of course, the U.S. Constitution, which has been amended 27 times since it was ratified in 1788. The first 10 of those amendments constitute the Bill of Rights.
This means that amendments frequently are used to address events that were unforeseen when the original document was created.

Recently, the Senate amended its rule to restrict first-time senators from vying for the position of the Senate President and Deputy Senate President.
The amendment to Section 2(1)(2) and (3) followed a motion by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, titled, “Amendment to the Standing Orders of the Senate Pursuant to Order 109 of the Senate Standing Orders, 2022.”

The above suggests that the essence of the amended traditional rulers' law in Akwa Ibom state is not out of place, but an essential practice that is more advantageous than one would ever think of.
Its intent was never discriminatory, discontentive and derogatory as painted by those fanning the embers of ethnic bigotry.

Propagandists have now feasted on the agitation, attempting to mislead the people with the narrative that if the position of the President-General is an exclusive preserve of an Ibibio monarch, then the Ibibios will be the decider of who rules over the political landscape of the state. Another propaganda is that by making the position non-tenurial, other ethnic groups would become second class.

But how can the traditional institution in a state like Akwa Ibom become so powerful to decide who governs the state? It is laughable that a traditional institution will suddenly become a political party and electorate at the same time. In democracy, the power to choose who leads reside with the people.

It is observed by pundits who have followed the issue closely that the agitation for rotation of the office of the President-general of the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers in Akwa Ibom is a call that seeks to bastardize the essentiality of the amendment of the traditional rulers' law which initially received the applause of traditional rulers who have a perfect understanding of its intents, much more than their subjects.

Primarily, the basis for the amendment of the TRC law was that the recognition accorded Akwa Ibom State traditional rulers at the national stage was short-lived chiefly because of the tenurial arrangement. In other words, the rating of our traditional institution was below what was given to the Emirs, Obas and others with permanent headship. That necessitated the elevation so that the council will not be playing second fiddle role on the national stage. It was to see Akwa Ibom monarch placed at par with the like of the Sultan of Sokoto, Emir of Kano, Obi of Onitsha, Oba of Benin, Obong of Calabar, Ooni of Ife, Oba of Lagos, Olu of Warri, etc, whose monarchial reign is permanent.

The perpetuity of the headship of the supreme council of traditional rulers in the state is never to rob others of their powers, position, or functionality, but to strengthen the institution to compete favourably with their counterparts at the national scene. The law does not make an Annang man inferior to his Ibibio brothers, neither does it make an Oro man less valuable than he was. It does not in any way make an Ibibio man superior to indigenes of other tribes in the state. It is intended to give Akwa Ibom a voice on the national platform.

It is common knowledge to understand that one who occupies the office for only two years may not be grounded like others who have spent their entire lifetime on the throne. If we keep rotating every two years as agitated, at the national scene, the new ruler will sit like a baby in the palace where the Obas, Obis, Olus and Emirs are sitting.

In states of the federation that practice permanent headship of the office in question, there are many traditional rulers performing their respective duties, but one imperial monarch still exists as a representative of the traditional stool in that state.

The same imperial system is practiced in Delta, where the Olu of Warri happens to be the imperial monarch who is often chosen from the Itshikiris. That does not in anyway denigrate or belittle the Urhobos and other tribes therefrom.

What about the British monarchy that is so much revered? The monarchy of the United Kingdom, commonly referred to as the British monarchy, is the constitutional form of government by which a hereditary sovereign reigns as the head of state of the United Kingdom, the Crown Dependencies and the British Overseas Territories. The current monarch is King Charles III, who ascended the throne on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
Unlike ours which offers the luxury for the president-general to be chosen from other Local Government Areas, the British monarchy rotates in one family, and no one is crying of discrimination.

It is quite preposterous that the office of the paramount ruler in Akwa Ibom state is for a lifetime, until the person occupying the office is dead, then can there be the need for a new one to be chosen. If some of the royal fathers agitating for rotation of the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers' headship will agree that the paramount rulership in their domains be tenurial, then they have the moral standing to demand for rotation of the office of the president general of the supreme council of traditional rulers.

So far, many have reacted to the propaganda, and the latest reaction comes from Barr. Patrick Umoh, the member representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency. Even as it is unnecessary to respond to his comments on the issue, it is imperative that some records be put straight.
For a member of Parliament to send such a letter to the House of Assembly where he claimed that the lawmakers erred in the amendment of the TRC law is tantamount to fanning the embers of violence, anarchy, division and acrimony. He is inciting other tribes against the Ibibios, and should be called to order with all sense of urgency.

The same law he is referring to equally makes provision for the heads of other ethnic groups to be integral part of the leadership of the supreme council of traditional rulers. In other words, The Oku Ibom Ibibio cannot discharge his functions alone, without the support of the Akuku Annang and the Atta Oro who are to serve as Vice President 1 & 2 respectively. There can never be an excellent democratization of the traditional stool more than what we have in Akwa Ibom state as empowered by the amended traditional rulers' law.

The consistent reflection on section 42(1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as (amended) is misapplied in this case. Does it mean that the section is only applicable to Akwa Ibom? What about other states where the traditional rulers' headship is not tenurial? Why are they not quoting the said section? Does it mean that only Akwa Ibom people know how to efficiently interpret the law?

Never has it been mentioned that other ethnic nationalities are challenging the headship or perpetuity of the imperial monarch of their tribes. Does it mean that we do not have reverence and genuine respect/regard for our traditional stool?

The drums of war and the orchestra of anarchy being directed and "choir-mastered" by those who should be custodians of the laws is what has beaten the imaginations of sane people, and brings to question the integrity and morality as those who claimed they are lawmakers.

As it is, the traditional rulers' council is under the ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and their activities are independently run. But where they have any issue that has to do with amendment of the law, they have to approach the ministry who would transfer same to the executive , and subsequently to the House of Assembly. The case in question passed through due process, and has become a law.

Since the issue in contention has become a law, and there is a pending case in court which has not yet been decided on, what then is the essence of the letter the MP sent to members of the House of Assembly? Could it be that he is not acquainted with the law?

It is out of place to attempt to unearthed bad history for the sake of posterity. Akwa Ibom people should ignore the call for division by those who want to politicize the revered traditional institution. We should tread with caution.

Politics / HENSEK - Dutifully, In The Service Of Interpreting The Umo Eno ARISE Show by Browndiary(m): 9:22pm On Sep 07, 2023
By Samuel Udoma

The ARISE Agenda of Gov. Umo Eno has kick-started beautifully. The commissioning of the Ndiya-Akpan Andem internal roads yesterday was a cherry-topping to the first 100 days of strong start of the Umo Eno administration. The entire work was completed in just under 70 days.

While campaigning at the market in the pre-election, Governor Umo Eno had experienced how impassable the Ndiya-Akpan Andem road had been. To provide respite, Gov. Eno had promised that he will breathe new life to the ever busy, albeit unkempt Akpan Andem Market and the the adjoining axis within his first 100 days in office. Yesterday, he kept that promise.

To physically interpret the Governor's ARISE vision for Ndiya Street-Akpan Andem Market, Engr. Uwem Okoko FNSE - the MD/CEO of HENSEK Integration Services was called upon. HENSEK has remained a trusted lieutenant of Gov. Umo Eno. His love for the Governor and the State is glaring and quite mutual.

The timeframe of delivery was quite short for such a daunting job. Attempting to even relocate market women and traders for job to begin can be exhausting, people can attest. But HENSEK was well adept. He is a core 'street general' and a very humble man. He is someone who simply knows how to get things done and is a tireless workaholic.

Suffice to say here that the Ndiya-Akpan Andem axis of Uyo holds a special place in the heart of Akwa Ibomites. Nearly, all of Uyo shops at the popular township market, while Ndiya used to serve as the main entrance to the now refurbished Uyo Township Stadium. The people of the State had clearly been worried over the deplorable state of that vicinity.

HENSEK is one firm that puts humanism into its operations. Despite moving heavy equipment into the bustling market site, there have been no stories of traders victimization or wanton displacement of people. HENSEK's workers and the traders coexisted mutually till the completion of the job.

Today, Udo Umana street from Ndiya to Aka Road and then to Aka Itiam and many internal paths in Akpan Andem are all wearing new looks. Large drains have been opened to de-log the once waterlogged area down up to Aka Itiam by 2-Lanes. In addition, the market itself, has been given significant facelift. The Market Police Station has been totally remodelled and reconstructed.

Over 40 new toilets and 8 bathroom conveniences have been added to deepen public health and sanitation within the market communiity, (with special purpose-built for the disabled and our Muslim brothers). New solar lights now keep the market lit all night long to fend off miscreants and heighten security. There is also a new solar powered 20,000 litres overhead tank to supply water in within the market.

Through HENSEK'S ingenious interpretation of Gov. Umo Eno's vision, the days of open air spreading of wares on dirty, muddy surfaces along the Udo Umana axis of Akpan Andem Market are now over. The entire stretch of that road has been overlaid and proper pave-walks provided. The breathe of fresh air has also extended to Johnson Street - it is equally 100% overlaid too.

Although, it is still very early in the life of the Gov. Umo Eno administration, the signs have been very positive. The Governor has shown that he means well for the people of the State. In return, he is earning widespread admiration and commendation.

With a tireless, efficient, result-oriented wingman as HENSEK humbly and dutifully in the service of interpreting the Governor's ARISE Agenda for Akwa Ibom, the Umo Eno administration is earmarked for greater, greater accomplishments.

THE INTRIGUES OF ABUJA POLITICAL MUSKETEERS SEEKING TO CLAIM THE SOUL OF AKWA IBOM STATE TREASURY

UYO SENATORIAL DISTRICT MEDIA PRACTITIONERS' FORUM (USDMPF)

#12 Jubilee School Road,
Uyo
Akwa Ibom State

PRESS STATEMENT

It is understandable by now that post election legal battles orchestrated by the opposition elements in Akwa Ibom are simply political ploys by the Abuja political musketeers seeking the proverbial throat of Akwa Ibom State Treasury through the antics of myopic political surrogates.

This fight is not strange to Akwa Ibom people. This same battle was fought during the " Warsaw saw War" days in 2019 but justice prevailed.
The same voice of Esau and hand of Jacob are at it again.

The ultimate aim is to have access to Akwa Ibom State Treasury by all means and at all costs.

However, the Uyo Senatorial District Media Practitioners' Forum (USDMPF) is worried by the unending legal battles and landmines plotted by the opposition elements to distract the progress of Akwa Ibom State's Golden Era meant to herald more Peace, Security, Wealth and Prosperity for the people.

A recent Suit No: FHC/L/CS/1247/2023 instituted by the Inspector General of Police(IGP) through a Motion Ex-Parte seeking document and records of WAEC from Heads of National Office of WAEC and WAEC itself at the Federal High Court in Lagos concerning a matter which had been decided by the Supreme Court of the Land calls for concern as to why Akwa Ibom State has become of such great interest to Abuja, Nigeria and the IGP.

While the Police is free to engage in it's investigation process, a few questions beg for answers simultaneously in this regard.

Who is the IGP answerable to and from who does he take instructions in Nigeria?

Why is Akwa Ibom State Post Election case of interest to the IGP to the extent of seeking an Ex-parte Order to compel the WAEC Officials and WAEC itself to avail his investigation Team with examination records of an entire Examination Centre(Victory High School, Ikeja) in Lagos State for the sake of one man?

Is the IGP taking instructions from Obong Bassey Albert a k.a. OBA of the YPP; Mr Akan Okon; Mr Akan Udofia who wandered into the APC at the eleventh hour and became its controversial governorship candidate, or Senator John James Akpanudoedehe of the NNPP?

Put differently, because of the tortoise Politics that some Akwa Ibom people are used to, is the IGP taking directive from Senator Godswill Akpabio, Nigeria's Senate President?
Or is he listening to President Tinubu on matters relating to Akwa Ibom?
Are all these legal antics a ploy to take over AKWA IBOM STATE TREASURY through the political surrogates using the Court?

The Police is an Agency of government with the primary aim to enforce law and order but finding the Police going back to the matter that went from High court to Appeal court and up to the Supreme Court and was settled, to begin demanding for fresh documents is really intriguing and calls for concern. Whatever fresh investigation is going on, the police should know that there is a subsisting judgement in REM on the matter which is binding on all.

Indeed, something is in the offing. With the Olive Branch offered by Distinguished Senator Chief Godswill Akpabio, and publicly embraced by His Excellency Pastor Umo Bassey Eno at the emergence of the former as the Nigerian Senate President, it is inadmissible to contemplate that Senator Akpabio's Olive Branch could have been a poisonous chalice.

The USDMPF feels that this new antics is nothing short of a gang up against Akwa Ibom State Governor to truncate the mandate (by all means) willingly and overwhelmingly handed him by Akwa Ibom people, or worse still, adopt the carrot and stick tactics to intimidate Pastor Umo Bassey Eno to defect to the ruling APC which remains unacceptable as majority of the people know that PDP is like a Religion in the oil rich State.

The intimidation of the governor and his constant harassment in the media and the recent Suit at the Federal High Court in Lagos by the Police are all ploy to distract the governor and force him to eat the APC's humble pie which is bad and callous.

Petitioning the INTERPOL on such document that the issuer, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) had claimed continuously to be theirs, betrays the governor's traducers as being insensitively evil.

It is sad and ridiculous that all these merry go round from INTERPOL, to Police IG and to the Federal High Court in Lagos is all about WAEC Certificate of His Excellency Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, a matter long decided by the Supreme Court of the Land.

The bad losers behind the charade should let Akwa Ibom breathe, and should know that their individual interest and egoistic quest for power cannot supercede the interest of over 7.9 million Akwa Ibom people.

The truth remains that Pastor Umo Bassey Eno won the election fair and square, got declared as winner and sworn-in to office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State. The earlier Obong Bassey Albert, Mr Akan Okon, Mr Akan Udofia, and Senator John James Akpanudoedehe come to terms with this truth, the better.

The governor needs concentration now to work, not unnecessary distractions continuously fuelled by opposition elements and their Abuja cohorts. The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal should be allowed to finish it's work.
Akwa Ibom people should rise up and condemn this evil men who's aim is to deface the hard earned reputation and integrity of the Governor.

Governor Umo Eno, the true symbol and identity of Akwa Ibom State, shouldn't for any reason be seen in the image these bad losers are labouring so hard to portray.

Enough is Enough

Politics / Senate Appoints Ekong Sampson Into Committee To Investigate Firearms Abuse by Browndiary(m): 7:55am On Jul 20, 2023
...as Sampson, Aniekan Bassey, others, co-sponsor motion on poor state of road infrastructure, erosion menace in Nigeria

...assures on fight to provide jobs for Akwa Ibom youths

By Samuel Udoma, ABUJA

Senator representing Akwa Ibom South in the National Assembly, Dr Ekong Sampson has been appointed into the 11-man Senate Ad-hoc Committee to investigate alleged abuse of firearms by officers of the Nigerian Custom Service.

The set up of the Committee followed the motion titled, 'Urgent Need to Investigate the Abuse of Firearms by Officers of Nigerian Custom Service in Katsina' sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar'adua(Katsina Central), yesterday at the Senate plenary, National Assembly, Abuja.

The motion expressed worry that 'some officers of the NCS who should be civil and professional in their engagements and handling of firearms have had series of shootings of innocent citizens'. Senator Yar'adua noted that such arm recklessness had resulted in many fatalities in Katsina state and in other parts of the country. He condemned the indiscriminate abuse of firearms and called for proper investigation into the incidents.

In its resolution on the motion, the Senate at the plenary, presided over by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, announced an Ad-hoc Committee to look into the matter with urgency. The Committee which is headed by a former Custom Officer, Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi,(Osun East) has Senator Ekong Sampson as member.

Other members of the Committee include Senators Shuaibu Lau(PDP-Taraba) Kawu Sumaila (NNPP- Kano), Tony Nwoye (LP Anambra), Umar Sadiq,(APC-Kwara) and Senator Solomon Adeola,(APC-Ogun)

Others are Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua (APC-Katsina),Olajide Emmanuel (APC-Ondo), Mohammed Muntari (APC-Katsina) and Napoleon Bali (PDP- Plateau). The Committee has six weeks to present reports of its findings to the Senate.

Also at the plenary yesterday, Senator Ekong Sampson and his Akwa Ibom North East counterpart, Senator Aniekan Bassey were among the co-sponsors of a motion seeking attention to the poor state of road infrastructure and menace of gully erosion in Nigeria. Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau was the lead sponsor.

The motion noted the deplorable state of many federal roads across the country. It equally expressed worry over the 'menace of erosion, with deep gullies, cutting off some communities from other parts of the country'. The motion observed that despite huge amount of money spent on road construction and rehabilitation in Nigeria since the return of democracy, there have been minimal positive impact on the condition of the roads.

It further observed that 'the collapse has led to a decline in agricultural activities, adversely affecting movement of agricultural produce from rural areas and across the country'. These were in addition to 'chilling statistics on loss of lives to accidents as a result of bad state of roads in the country'.

The motion prayed the Senate to set up an Ad-hoc Committee to come up with a compendium of all affected roads and erosion sites in the country for urgent intervention.

Meanwhile, Senator Sampson has assured of his commitment to provide jobs for the teeming youths of Akwa Ibom South and indeed, Akwa Ibom State in general. Sampson stated this when he received a former General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barr. Joyce Oduah, in his office recently.

Senator Ekong Sampson noted that apart from his normal legislative functions, he will explore ways to ensure that youths of Akwa Ibom South and Akwa Ibom State generally, gained employment.

The National Assemblyman reiterated that human capital development was a key concern to him and remained paramount in his Senate representation. Senator Sampson hinted that he has set up a Special Desk in his office to handle employment issues for Akwa Ibom youths in both the private and public sectors. Recall that over the years, Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin has pursued employment for a lot of youths from the State.

In her remarks, Barr. Oduah said that she came to congratulate Senator Sampson on his victory. The former NBA scribe, who hails from Oron but married in Delta State, expressed sentiments that having known Senator Ekong Sampson over the years, she was confident that he will offer Akwa Ibom South, effective representation in the National Assembly.

Politics / Gov Eno reads Riot Act to Communities Impeding Development with Structures by Browndiary(m): 6:19pm On Jul 09, 2023
...says duly certified structures would attract compensations

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has warned individuals and groups obstructing development projects with hurriedly erected and illegal structures in the state, hoping to attract compensation from government, to desist from such act as his administration would only pay compensation on duly certified structures.

Governor Eno read the Riot Act, Sunday, at his home town while addressing the congregation at the Apostolic Church, Ikot Ekpene Udo in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area where he, accompanied by his wife, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Eno, worshipped in an interdenominational thanksgiving service to commemorate his success in the last general elections.

Governor Eno who faulted the indiscriminate upsurge of unwarranted structures on roadsides of the community, described the act as anti- development borne out of greed to rob government of funds, and ordered owners of the unsolicited buildings to dismantle them with immediate effect.

"Please, to those of you who have heard me saying that we are going to construct roads, thank God our traditional Rulers and specifically the Village heads of these communities are here. I want to use this occasion to appeal to all those raising illegal structures by the road with the hope of getting compensation to please desist from such actions.

"This is a very serious warning, if we come with a project to your community and you obstruct it because of compensation, we will leave and take the project to another community.

"I will not struggle to help the people of this community. If we come to your local Government, Village or Community for development, you should receive and encourage us. We are prepared to develop the rural areas. We are prepared to work but let it be that when we come, we don't meet resistance in any form.

"I am a peace loving Governor. I will not have any strength to fight with the youths but that does not mean we will run whenever it is necessary to fight. I am not expected to fight and force development on you. A Local Government or Community that gives us the enabling environment is where we will develop.

“It is not out of place to pay compensation for the old existing structures but for the hurriedly constructed buildings we will not pay", he warned.

Recalling how he was prevented from building a ware house in his community by youths during his days as a member of the state Executive Council in the immediate past administration, he emphasized that communities that are not ready to embrace development would forfeit such projects to others with need for such developments.

He therefore directed Local Government Council Chairmen across the state to make available hundred hectares of land in their domains for development projects, explaining that the move is to enable his administration take development to the grassroots as enunciated in the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda of his administration .

"I remember when I was in the Ministry of Lands And Water Resources, I asked each Local Government to give us land for Agriculture, it was only eleven Local Government that complied.

"Now, I am appealing again to all Local Government Chairmen, please give us land not less than one hundred hectares. Send us the land plans through the Secretary to the State Government and see if we will not come there and develop it for the benefit of the people of that local Government.

The state Chief Executive expressed appreciation to the people for the support given him that saw to his emergence as governor in the last general elections and particularly commended the church for coming together with other denominations to thank God for his success at the polls.

He premised the choice of The Apostolic Church, Ikot Ekpene Udo, for the thanksgiving service on the expansive auditorium which has accommodated the guest worshippers as well as the community being his ancestral birth place, saying that his parents are from the community and the church is his ancestral church.

He particularly appreciated the people of the community for accepting the throne of leadership through their massive support, noting that if he had faced rejection from the people his ambition would have suffered a set back.

"We needed to come and share fellowship with our brethren in my very home of birth, Ikot Ekpene Udo.
It is very significant for us because my both parents are from this village, though from different areas. The truth is that we are all one. I thought it wise to come home first to say thank you to the people of this land that did not reject this throne.

"You know, there are situations that your land can reject you. You don't know the speakings that has gone on this Land. Sometimes, the world may find delight in honouring you but your land would not agree. I tell you this as a pastor and not a politician. The world may choose to give you honour while the land of your birth can say no.

"So for this land to accept this honour that God has done us, we have come to say to the people of Ikot Ekpene Udo and pastors that prayed for us, thank you. We really appreciate your sacrifices that brought us to where we are today.

"This is only an opportunity. I may not be able to go round all churches one by one, but that does not mean I won't honour your invitation when necessary.

"We chose the Apostolic Church for this occasion for two reasons. One is because The Apostolic Church is my local Church and the second is because it has the largest auditorium among all the churches in Ikot Ekpene Udo. We will continue to maintain this good relationship that we have established in the course of this great journey. Thank you very much and God bless you", he stated.

He also paid glowing tributes to the late former Paramount Ruler, Edidem James Obot, who was murdered in cold blood, and thanked God for raising him to continue from where the royal father stopped.

He donated a purse in aid of the church building project and gave an undisclosed amount to the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members serving in the community who were visibly present at the service.

Lending her voice to Governor Eno , the state’s First Lady, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Eno, expressed gratitude to the women and her In-laws for the support given their son to emerge Governor of the state and prayed God's blessings on them .

Preaching on the theme "A man After God's Heart" the Area Superintendent of the Church, Apostle E.E. Inyang, who culled his message from Acts 13 verse 17- 22 and 1st Samuel 16:3,13 admonished that a man after God's heart is diligent in his ways, humble in the Lord, and depends fully on God.he said such a man who is led by the spirit of God, enjoys God's favour, protection, blessing, does not stop his journey halfway, and is compassionate and generous to the less privileged.

The Apostolic clergyman disclosed that Governor Umo Eno is imbued with these qualities and prayed God to guide him to realize his dreams for the benefit of the state.

Highpoints of the service was conferment of ‘The Joshua Award’ on the Governor to enable him lead the state, and ‘The Phoebe Award’ on the state first lady, Pastor Patience Eno, to strengthen her in her supportive role to the first family.

With the Governor at the service was a delegation comprising the Deputy Governor, Dr Akon Eyakenyi ; Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah and wife; Speaker of House Of Assembly, Hon Udeme Otong and wife, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Politics / Governor Umo Eno: Putting Akwa Ibom First by Browndiary(m): 12:22am On Jun 09, 2023
By Ubon Marcus

On Thursday the 8th of June 2023, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno paid a courtesy call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The Governor thereafter met with members-elect of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom and to the admiration of everyone, those from parties other than the Governor’s party, PDP were not excluded from the meeting.

From the Governor’s posturing, it is clearly evident that the gentleman has a simple agenda: putting Akwa Ibom first devoid of bias or sentiments.

He said so himself when speaking to State House correspondents after meeting Mr. President. “Politics is over. It’s time for governance. We must do whatever it takes to bring the dividends of democracy and good governance to the people of Nigeria and Akwa Ibom State in particular”.

Truth is, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno seeks to build an Akwa Ibom where love, brotherliness, togetherness, and the overall benefit of the state is exalted over partisanship and prejudices.

At several fora, he has made his noble intentions very clear and reiterated the need for togetherness.

Recall that in his victory speech delivered on March 19, 2023, moments after he was declared Governor-elect by the INEC Returning Officer in the state, Prof Emmanuel Adigio, Pastor Umo Eno extended the olive branch to his co-contestants in the election, appealing to them to sheath their swords and join him in building Akwa Ibom.

“Let me commend my opponents for putting up a good fight. In any political contest, a winner must emerge and today, it has pleased God to place me as the winner of this contest. I hereby extend an olive branch and my hand of fellowship to all my brothers who contested with me, to join me in building the Akwa Ibom State where the symphonies of peace, development, love, unity and brotherhood would continue to ring louder and bind us all even deeper together”, he said, promising to run an all-inclusive government where no one would be punished or victimized on account of holding a different political opinion.

The message resonated louder in His Excellency’s inaugural address as Governor on May 29: “I pledge to you that I will be Governor for all Akwaibomites, irrespective of political persuasions or affiliations.”

Governor Umo Eno’s push for a pan Akwa Ibom ideology in governance is a step in the right direction especially coming after a season of politicking that was somewhat divisive.

As a leader he has taken the first step. It is now left for key players in the political space and indeed, Akwa Ibomites in general to appreciate and reciprocate his goodwill, which is rare in this political clime of ours.

Fellow Akwa Ibom people, let us let go of past differences and “ARISE” with Pastor Umo Eno for the overall benefit of our dear state.

Akwa Ibom ARISE!

Politics / Clergy Berates Critics Of Gov Umo Eno's Appointments, Insists Vituperation Done by Browndiary(m): 2:21pm On Jun 01, 2023
Some Critics have faulted the few appointments done yesterday by governor Umo Eno of Akwa ibom State describing them as fallen short of public expectations in a program anchored by a private radio station monitored by our Correspondent today in Uyo.

However a renowned Clergy in the African Church Uyo, Revd Richard Peters who also called in defense of the governor's actions described the position of the Critics as unfortunate and insensitive.

Revd. Peters, a good governance Advocate said it's inhumane to take on the new governor on his first set of appointments, an action he noted was his prerogative.

According to Petters, " People should respect the governor's choice of Secretary to the state government SSG, Chief Press Secretary CPS, Director of Protocol, Senior Special Assistant Media and Chief Economic Adviser because outside being his right to appoint them, those appointed are eminently qualified and have track record in thier various chosen career".

He further highlighted, " it is within the purview of the governor to appoint those who will help him interpret his vision for the state, and as the man at the helms of affairs in the state, the bulk stops at his table".

" It is very clear that the Critics of his first appointments are those who tirelessly criticised and blackmail him during the electioneering campaign and did everything possible to frustrate his elevation as the governor.

" We must not turn to arm chair critics, Gov Umo Eno like other good leaders encourage objective criticism but a descent into blind criticism of the appointments made by his few days old administration is unacceptable".

The Clergy intoned that for geninue development to continue, leaders should be encouraged and allowed to take decisive decisions for the benefit of the people.

He further explained, " I know the incumbent Governor as a man who is very tolerant of Critics, that was displayed by his actions and comportment during the campaigns, then he was unperturbed and now at the helms of affairs I doubt if anything has changed. You can't start assessment on a student who is less than a few days in class. It will be wiser to do so after a specific period.

Revd Peters who said the governor came prepared for governance and had on several occasions Pledge to use his ARISE agenda to take the state to the next level appealed to the radio stations to control people who come air to pour vituperation on leaders in order to avoid heating up the polity.

The Clergy also described as amusing the demand that the new governor make public his commissioners immediately when a new State House of Assembly is yet to be Inaugurated stressing that it amounts to putting the cart before the horse.

" We believe that he will appoint competent capable and committed persons with good conscience to every position as time progresses, what is paramount now is our prayers and support" he concluded.
