When Senator Owan Enoh sent forth the Team Nigeria contingent to the ongoing Paris Games, his thoughts were on how well it would end as he believed, like most Nigerians, that Team Nigeria could pull the chestnuts from the fire this time round. The likes of Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Favour Ofili, Blessing Oborodudu, Oduayo Adekuroye, the D’Tigress were all seen as very bright medal prospects. No Nigerian boxer had qualified for the boxing event at the Olympics since 2016. This time, three qualified. Unfortunately, one got injured while preparing for the games and he withdrew, the other got beaten in the first fight; while the third, a lady was disqualified for doping offences. In the main, Senator Owan Enoh’s young era has not escaped from tradition. Cynthia Ogunsemilore’s drug failure and subsequent expulsion from Team Nigeria camp and the Olympic village is another scandal bound to leave a huge impact on the Nigerian contingent. A senior colleague, Onochie Anibeze believes the exclusion of Ofili from the 100 meters dash could have been deliberate by an official. “He could have done that for the good of the athlete,” he reasoned, adding, “she is expected to concentrate on 200 meters which is her speciality and the relays,” Onochie guessed. Even at that, he was of the opinion that “if it is as I think, the said official should have done that with her consent. She should have been consulted and guided. Not telling her before now makes it bad.” But Anibeze did not also rule out an oversight, a complete error on the side of the officials. After one week of competition, Nigeria no longer has any stake in boxing, badminton, women’s football, swimming, among others. Twelve people in eastern Ethiopia who survived a lightning strike were buried up to their necks for around two hours in accordance with local customs. The lightning struck a sheep at the door while we were inside a house. All of us fell down. Many of us were shaking,” survivor Nesro Abdi told the BBC. Locals who heard screaming rushed to help. Burying someone after they survive a lightning strike is said to restore their health (Abas Muktar) “They brought milk and poured it on us. They dug up the ground and buried our bodies below our necks,” Mr Nesro said. In Ethiopia’s central region of Oromia, it is widely believed that if someone survives a lightning strike, burying them in soil and giving them milk to drink or pouring milk on them will restore their health. Lightning is seen as an act of God – when it occurs, people celebrate so as not to offend the Almighty. Mr Nesro said: “As I couldn’t move my legs before, people had to carry me and put me in the soil. But when we got out of the soil, everyone is feeling better. The Anambra State Government has rescued an 11-year-old girl, Happiness Nwafor, from her madam who brutalized her in Onitsha. The ministry of Women and Social Welfares which rescued the minor, said it was notified of the incident on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, and quickly swung into action by dispatching a team to the scene. Narrating her ordeal, the minor alleged that she was beaten by her madam, one Adachukwu Chukere Okafor for touching her daughter’s body. Happiness alleged that her madam Ada used a broken bottle, iron, knife and pistol on her in just two weeks of her stay. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the suspect allegedly burnt the little girl’s clothes and dropped her off stark naked with her relative known as Ifeoma Muoghalu. While speaking at the hospital where she was first rushed to in Ogidi, the relative, Ifeoma Muoghalu claimed that the suspect boasted that nothing will happen because she’s a lawyer and knows how to work her way out. Ifeoma equally noted that since the incident, the suspect has not been taking her calls. She also confirmed that the minor was handed over to her Madam on the 5th of January only to be disfigured within the short period of her stay. The victim is currently receiving treatment at a undisclosed hospital in Awka. It comes weeks after an investigation by the BBC and openDemocracy uncovered evidence of widespread sexual abuse and torture by the late preacher. Emmanuel TV played a key role in his rise from local pastor to global star. TB Joshua died in 2021, but his Synagogue Church of All Nations (Scoan) is now run by his wife Evelyn Joshua. The church has not commented on the removal, but has said previous allegations of wrongdoing have been “unfounded”. Emmanuel TV had more than half a million followers on YouTube and hundreds of millions of views. This is the second time in three years that its YouTube channel has been suspended, following previous breaches of the platform’s community guidelines. As part of the investigation with the BBC, openDemocracy analysed Emmanuel TV’s online presence, finding at least 50 “abusive” videos on YouTube. Their team reported the videos to YouTube and the account was suspended on 29 January. In a comment to the BBC, the Google-owned video-sharing platform said Emmanuel TV had been “terminated for violating… hate speech policies”. TB Joshua was famed for his “healing” ministries and filmed hundreds of services that claimed to show him curing the physically disabled and chronically ill – which multiple former church members have subsequently debunked. The content openDemocracy reported included Emmanuel TV footage of people with mental health issues being kept in chains, cases of medical misinformation and examples of smear campaigns against women who spoke out about TB Joshua’s sexual abuse. Emmanuel TV’s satellite channel was dropped on 17 January by MultiChoice, a South African company that runs popular satellite services DStv and GOTv. For many years, the channel was one of the most successful Christian networks in the world, broadcasting to millions all over the world. A Nigerian pastor, Prosperity Moore, is facing four counts of criminal charges by the United States. Securities and Exchange Commission for scamming several Nigerians residing in the U.S. of $1.4 million under the pretext of offering them profitable investment opportunities, court documents seen by Peoples Gazette showed. Mr Moore, 27, a Nigerian citizen and founder of Jesus Online Church, was charged in the U.S. District Court Northern District of Georgia on January 18 for swindling about 60 persons living in America of more than $1.4 million between September 2021 and October 2022. Through his limited liability company, Prosperity and Investment Solutions, which he named after himself, Mr Moore convinced church members in Atlanta to invest a minimum of $5,000 in exchange for a 50 per cent profit to be cashed at the end of each month. Mr Moore, who had never acquired any form of financial education from any institution, said the funds were “for a diverse range of investments” to generate profit, court filings showed. But the SEC found his statement to be false after discovering that he “used money received from investors to make payments to other investors and to pay personal expenses,” in a manner akin to a ponzi scheme. The pastor deceived his congregation into funding the investment scam by leveraging his Christian faith and quoting scriptures and phrases like “trusting God that everything will be better than it was before.” Given his Nigerian nationality, he directed his marketing efforts at Nigerian-American Christians, concentrating on those “who identified as Christian and were of Nigerian descent,” according to the court documents. On the Prosperity website, Mr Moore offered three investment options he referred to as the Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans. With the Silver plan, investors pay a minimum of $5,000 upfront and lock in a profit of 50 per cent after a 30-day period. A 10 per cent investment fee would be deducted from the total profits. For “Gold Investment,” their funds were locked in for three months and 50 per cent profit was guaranteed while seven per cent investment fee would be deducted from the overall profit. Platinum investors would invest their monies for a period of 12 months and pay a five percent investment fee to be deducted from total profits. According to the scam website, Prosperity LLC “provides you with a new source of passive income, giving you more time to do what you love.” All investors signed an agreement that they could not access the funds during the lock-in period and would only be able to do so upon maturity. “Between October 2021 and September 2022, Prosperity collected cash investments exceeding $1.4 million from over 60 individual investors, with most investors selecting the Gold Investment program,” court charges by the SEC indicated. Judge Steve C. Jones swiftly issued an order restraining Mr Moore from taking part in any investment business transaction in the United States after observing that the accused pastor had not refuted or contested the SEC’s claims. “It is hereby further ordered, adjudged and decreed that Defendant is permanently restrained and enjoined from violating Section 17(a) of the Securities Act of 1933 (the “Securities Act”),” Mr Jones ruled on January 19, a day after the SEC’s filed the charges. The pastor, who did not contest the judgement, also waived his right to appeal the ruling. A US based online pastor who has been charged with fraud for selling a “worthless” cryptocurrency says he only did it because “the Lord” told him to give his followers 10x returns. In a strange nine-minute video — posted to INDXcoin’s official website — INDXcoin founder and pastor Eli Regalado told users of the INDXcoin community that the charges being leveled against him and his partner were true. “The charges are that Kaitlin and I pocketed $1.3 million dollars, and I just want to come out and say those charges are true.” On Jan. 18, Regalado and his partner, Kaitlin Regalado, were charged with fraud for their role in issuing and marketing a sham token called INDXcoin to their followers, according to a statement from the Colorado Securities Commission. “We allege that Mr. Regalado took advantage of the trust and faith of his own Christian community and that he peddled outlandish promises of wealth to them when he sold them essentially worthless cryptocurrencies,” stated Colorado Securities Commissioner Tung Chan. “The complaint alleges that Regalado targeted Christian communities in Denver and claimed that God told him directly that investors would become wealthy if they put money into INDXcoin.” From June 2022 to April 2023, the Colorado regulator alleged that INDXcoin raised nearly $3.2 million from over 300 investors through a platform called the Kingdom Wealth Exchange. Most of the money was raised from the online-only church, Victorious Grace Church, where Regalado serves as a pastor. Of the more than $3 million raised from investors, Regalado said that half went to the Internal Revenue Service on taxes, while a significant sum went to a divine-backed home remodeling. “A few hundred thousand dollars went to a home remodel that the Lord told us to do.” Regalado shut down the Kingdom Wealth Exchange on Nov. 1, 2023, after claiming there weren’t “enough finances to keep the internal servers running,” adding that he and his partner were on the “doorstep of poverty.” In the same announcement, Regalado informed INDXcoin holders that God told them that all investors should refrain from selling the token and that his followers should “stop being ruled by mammon (chasing money).” While having admitted to being moments away from poverty, the lawsuit filed against them by Chan alleges the pair spent the majority of the $1.3 million sum on cosmetic dentistry, luxury handbags, snowmobiles, home renovations and luxury vacations. A group, Igbo Women Assembly, IWA, has raised the alarm that the South-East region is recording mass exodus of Igbos to other parts of the country and overseas. The group, which raised the alarm while speaking with journalists in Umuahia, on Wednesday, said that the region was recording mass movement of people who permanently settle or establish their businesses and families away from Igbo land. The National President of IWA, Nneka Chimezie said that Igbo land could not develop with the continuing decrease in population and concentration of resources away from the region. According to her, many of those who leave the region were not even interested in coming back to their original homes or having anything to do with the Igbo language and culture. Chimezie said, “We want to ensure that our men change from importation to production. The only way of getting our people to remain in the South-East and to grow the South population is to build industries.” She also raised the alarm that the Igbo language was now at a dying stage “as many adults and children now shun the language; the language will go extinct in a few years time.” The IWA members said they established schools in Lagos State where Igbo studies and cultures were exclusively learnt. She further said that her organization would collaborate with the Ohanaeze Ndigbo to revive the language and culture of the people. A Chinese startup has developed a tiny nuclear battery that it claims can generate electricity for 50 years without the need for charging. Just the size of a small coin, the company suggests that this technology has the potential to power a smartphone in the future (although there’s a lot of work ahead before that becomes a reality). Beijing-based Betavolt unveiled the miniature atomic energy battery on January 8, boasting in a press release that the technology is “way ahead of European and American scientific research institutions and enterprises.” Called BV100, the battery produces electricity by utilizing the energy emitted by a decaying radioactive isotope of nickel (nickel-63). In between the layers of nickel-63 are sheets of a single-crystal diamond semiconductor that are just 10 microns thick. It can store 3,300 megawatt hours and reportedly holds an energy density that’s more than 10 times that of conventional lithium batteries. According to Betavolt, it will be able to sustain its output for up to 50 years without the need for charging or maintenance. Measuring 15 x 15 x 1.5 millimeters, the battery’s power is 100 microwatts and the voltage is 3 volts. Bear in mind, that capacity is pretty meager and isn’t yet nearly strong enough to power an electronic device like a smartphone, let alone a laptop. That said, Betavolt notes that several of the batteries could potentially be used in series or parallel to power more demanding devices. Keeping a capsule of radioactive decay in your pocket might sound like risky business, but the company insists the battery is “absolutely safe.” So safe, in fact, they believe it could eventually be used to power medical devices such as pacemakers and artificial hearts. The company states there is no external radiation, adding that the battery “will not catch fire or explode in response to acupuncture and gunshots,” which is always a plus. Today, thermonuclear batteries are only used in aerospace engineering. For instance, the Voyager probes were fitted with a form of nuclear battery developed during the Cold War. Launched in 1977, the pair of Voyager spacecraft are still cruising through the outskirts of our Solar System. However, Betavolt believes their new product shows how nuclear batteries could even be used by consumers in everyday use. They say the battery is currently in its “pilot stage” and will soon be put into mass production. Looking ahead, the company plans to create more powerful batteries and wants to explore the use of different radioactive isotopes. “The company plans to launch a battery with a power of 1 watt in 2025. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, has been allegedly indicted in a corruption scandal. Gbajabiamila was allegedly fingered as one of the beneficiaries of the largesse of corruption uncovered under the Chief Executive Officer of the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Ahmed Kuru, and the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. A source in the presidency told SaharaReporters that the report of the CBN Special Investigator, Jim Obazee, exposed how Gbajabiamila allegedly benefitted from Kuru’s “largesse of Ikoyi properties from his days as Speaker of the House of Representatives”. The source claimed that Gbajabiamila, in return, had ensured Kuru remained as AMCON’s Chief Executive after about nine years. “President Bola Tinubu is under pressure from some political associates, whom Kuru has soiled their white robes, including the Hon Femi Gbajabiamila (President’s Chief of Staff), who has benefitted from Ahmed Kuru’s largesse of Ikoyi properties from his days as Speaker of the House of Representatives,” the source said. The source noted that “Gbajabiamila had persistently blocked Kuru’s removal as AMCON’s Chief Executive after about nine years in office, over two terms of a democratically elected President.” Recall that the Special Investigator’s report on the probe of Emefiele uncovered the alarming sums of public funds which went into the fraudulent acquisition of Polaris, Keystone and Union banks under Emefiele and AMCON under Kuru’s leadership. Following the report, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) dissolved the board and management of Titan Trust Bank, Union Bank, Polaris Bank and Keystone Bank. This followed a report submitted to President Bola Tinubu by the Special Investigator on the Central Bank of Nigeria and Related Entities, Jim Obazee. It was reported that the decision to dissolve the boards was taken after a meeting between the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, Obazee and the boards of the four banks, including Titan Trust Bank’s investors, who had earlier avoided meeting with the Special Investigator. The platform reported in December 2023 that the office of the Special Investigator had insisted that the Chairman of Titan Trust Bank (TTB), Tunde Lemo, Cornelius Vink and Rahul Savara, must appear before it over the acquisition of the Union Bank of Nigeria. Independent financial investigations revealed that Ahmed Kuru threw all others under the bus to save his neck by blackmailing all government officials who had benefitted from his generosity through the sharing of Ikoyi and Abuja properties. Some suspects in connection with Rolex ripping, terrorizing the streets of London have been arrested. According to Mail Online, Scotland Yard has deployed a squad of undercover officers posing as victims to capture the so-called Rolex Rippers responsible for a spate of violent watch muggings across the capital. Undercover officers were sent to streets known to be hotspots late at night where they quickly fell prey to robbers, who were unaware that they were the real targets. The innovative tactic is said to have led successful arrest. Over two operations, which ran from October 2022 to December 2022 and March 2023 to October 2023 respectively, 27 people were arrested and subsequently charged. Of these, 21 were convicted. Fourteen have been sentenced to a total of 26 years in prison. Some of the convicted thieves include two Nigerians; Emmanuel Sejilola and Damilola Odunoren. Between July 2022 to July 2023, watch theft in the boroughs of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, and Hammersmith and Fulham plummeted by 50 percent, dropping from 113 to 55. The secret operation was launched after a spate of terrifying watch robberies. In the six months to October 2022, there were more than 300 watches stolen in the West End alone worth a total of nearly £4million.
