Crime / Jungle Justice In Nigeria – Do Or Don’t by Btppolitics: 8:17am On Jun 01, 2016
What is jungle justice?

Well, it’s just a punishment carried out by individuals on a suspected criminal without any legal authority. Such criminal will experience a lot of pain before life is finally gone out of him/her.

He/She can be hit with different materials such as wood, broken bottles, steels, stones etc anything possible just make to sure the person is vulnerable or temporarily paralyzed and then the final stage comes – burning the criminal naked and alive.

Jungle Justice started in Nigeria close to a decade ago and still no solution has been procured to it.

The Law

According to the Nigerian Constitution,

Section (33) 1 states : “Every person has the right to life, and no one shall be deprived intentionally of his life, save the execution of the sentence of a court in respect of a criminal offence of which he has been found guilty in Nigeria.”

For many years, our law enforcement agencies have failed in being competent. In South-South, Nigeria, it is said that arrested criminals that engage in devious acts such as armed robbery or even murder slip through the hands of the police by paying ‘affordable bails’ instead of charging them to court for their deeds but these criminals will be released will still roam the streets and continue their devilish acts. This is why Nigerians have no belief in the police and it has greatly increased the rate of jungle justice in Nigeria.
Throwback to some jungle justice events:

1. ALUU 4 BOYS (2012)

I’m sure we still all remember these four young men who were battered and burnt alive. The gory video footage spread on YouTube like wildfire, even a policeman was caught hitting them with the butt of the gun,he was later apprehended alongside others who engaged in the act. This incident went viral in the nation and the parents of the deceased are still find to justice.

2. LYNCHING OF KID IN KADUNA(2012)

This happened just weeks after the ALUU boys incident and this time it was just a 12-year-old who was accused of kidnapping a pupil. He was beaten and burnt alive in Kaduna

3. FEMALE THIEF BEATEN TO PULP (2014)

A certain female was stripped naked and beaten because she stole a phone. The pretty woman was caught with a stolen phone and she was sexually manhandled and beaten to pulp by an angry mob.

4. FEMALE KIDNAPPER (2014)

A middle aged woman was stripped naked and also beaten a large crowd for allegedly kidnapping a young child that was home alone in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. After about 2 hours when life had almost gone out of the woman, the police got involved and took her away.

5. LYNCHING OF MAN IN FESTAC (2016)
Two suspected thieves were caught for trying a steal a parked motorcycle about 2 weeks ago in Festac unfortunately one of them got away and the other was beaten to pulp by angry residents.

6. WARRI INCIDENTS (2016)

Two out of seven robbers were caught in caught in Warri, they were beaten blue black and burnt alive in broad daylight. Their operation was to steal tricycles which we all know as ‘Keke Napep’ but they were unsuccessful and they got caught.

Also, a popular notorious thief called ‘Emma-B’ who had been terrorizing a particular community in Warri was caught by a vigilante and was brutally beaten and finally set ablaze.

There are thousands of other jungle justice cases that we all don’t know.

What’s your take on JUNGLE JUSTICE

Politics / Exclusive Interview - Question And Answer Session With VP Yemi Osinbajo by Btppolitics: 11:47pm On May 29, 2016
Vice president Yemi Osinbajo was engaged in an exclusive indepth interview with some News agencies and bloggers and had this to say.

"Yesterday evening, I held an interactive session with select individuals, some of whom were from Tech Cabal, YNaija, ProShare, Premium Times, Naij.com, ScoopNG, Bella Naija, Leadership NG.

Boy, they came prepared with some tough questions ranging from the style of governance, perceived economic recession, the Fulani herdsmen, Health, the Niger Delta, Poor communication, if the heavy rates attached to the use of drones would impede growth in technology and other questions.

I will highlight a few questions here and some of my responses.

Question One
There is a communication lapse between the government and the people. The government allows false information fester before it provides accurate information.

My response~
We totally agree that communication has been sloppy. We are working on a system that will provide accurate information and prompt responses to issues that bother the Nigerian people.

Question Two: What specific thing is the Federal Government doing about the killer herdsmen?

My response: First we have to agree that not all herdsmen are dangerous. A directive has been issued that any herdsman with weapons must be arrested on sight.

In addition, the State Police Commands across the Federation now have rules of engagement with dealing with the herdsmen. There is a heightened awareness.

The major deficiency is that the police cannot effectively police without State policing. The current set up of a unitary command doesn't help the situation.

I believe that State policing would be better but this requires a constitutional amendment so we are looking for ways to devolve power to the State commands.

Question Three:
What are we doing to ensure Nigeria does not fully slide into a recession?

My response: Nigeria is not sliding into a recession!
True, things have been difficult but we are committed to reflating the economy with the 2016 budget. We are investing in the people by empowering them. Economics is not just the fiscal part, it is also about how many people we are able to lift out of poverty.

Question Four:
How will the poorest of the poor be determined under the Social Protection Programme?

My response:
We are currently working with the World Bank and the Bill Gates Foundation. In each State, we have mapped out the poorest Local Government Areas and have made physical visits to those communities to ask the people there and see for ourselves.
It is a rigorous exercise but we believe it is the most credible way to capture the information we require.

Similarly, the Federal Government through the Bank of Industry will give out loans to 1.6 million people. 1 million market men and women and 600 hundred thousand artisans.

The N-Power Initiative for young people which will include training in technology, animation will commence in June. Young people can access the portal in June.

Question Five
There is a general perception that despite the hard times, the government doesn't seem to be cutting down its cost of governance.

My response:
Far far from it. President Muhammadu Buhari is a very frugal man. His lifestyle screams frugal.

He has cut down waste in the government totally.

I can tell you that as a private citizen and a lawyer at SimmonsCooper Partners, I earned a lot more than as Vice-President, but I am not complaining.

Question Six
What is the government's stance on the Niger Delta Avengers?

My response:
When people have genuine grievances, the government has an obligation to engage. We are engaging with those who have genuine grievances.

However, the wanton destruction of oil pipelines and export faculties is criminal conduct.

We will not create monsters by engaging anyone who participates in destruction.

There are ways to get the attention of the government but criminal conduct is certainly not a way to do that.

Question Seven:
We have heard of money that has been recovered, how do we know how much has been recovered or what has been done with the money?

My response ~
Yes, money has been recovered but we must categorize them differently.

We have identified large amounts of money from the US, the UK and Switzerland but the process takes time.

There is also the category of "assets" and funds that have been seized but are still subject of litigation and so cannot be spent.

Then there is the category of funds that have been willingly returned by individuals.

We will however publish the data of funds retrieved so far."

With all said and done, are we rest assured that the media personnel are not called to compromise?

On a rather lighter mood, Senate President Bukola Saraki revealed his brighter side as he interacted with a considerable amount of government, as well as privately owned schools and orphanages, spread across Abuja.

BTPpoliticsToday reporters revealed that amid his corruption trials, he, for some reason or the other took out time to reach out to young children in some primary schools and even went to the extent of reading out a story book to the listening pleasure of the children. “I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to read and interact with a cross-section of young children from private, government-run schools and orphanages across Abuja.”

The book read was titled ‘Ngozi Goes to School’, which showcases the need to revitalise Nigeria’s railway system.

Could Saraki be pulling a stunt to attract sympathy?

Politics / Tomato Disease Outbreak Affects 5 States – FG by Btppolitics: 3:09pm On May 25, 2016
AS the country continues to experience adverse scarcity of tomato, the Federal Government, Wednesday, revealed that five states have been affected by a tomato disease called Tuta absoluta, locally called ‘tomato ebola’.

This was made known by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, during a press briefing on current scarcity of the commodity.

According to Ogbeh the tomato disease came into the country from Niger Republic via some flying insects called moth that bores into the fruits and stem of the tomato plant, and invaded into farms in Nigeria, which ravages them under 48 hours.
The five states affected by the tomato disease outbreak include Kastina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, and Nasarawa. The disease has also spread to other tomato producing states in the North and as well as Lagos, Oyo and Ogun States.

He said: “It is absolute misconception that some tomato processing factories have mopped up tomato fruits in Nigeria, it is unfounded and untrue. Recently, a pest identified as Tuta Absoluta, locally called ‘tomato ebola’, a leaf miner/moth that bores hole into the fruits and stem causing enormous food loss, invaded tomato farms in Nigeria. Infestation by the tuta can ravage and wide out tomato farms within 48 hours.
“The pest is known world over as it originated from South America far back 1912 and have ravaged tomato farms in so many countries of the world till date including Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa.

“It entered Nigeria through Niger Republic into Kastina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Nasarawa and other tomato producing states in the North, as well as Southern States of Lagos, Oyo and Ogun.”
According to the Minister pesticides cannot control the disease as it easily develops resistance.
Tuta has the capacity to reproduce 10-12 times in a year, in tranches of 250-300 young ones within 28 days, and it spreads like wild fire if there is no knowledge of containment and very difficult to control, and if not properly contained it could also affect pepper and Irish-potato.

He said the federal government will partner with the states and local government authority to ensure complete containment of the pest, and farmers will continue sustainable production of fruits for local consumption and provide raw materials for processing.

However, the Minister said the losses made by farmers have not been ascertained, but they will receive government support.
Meanwhile the Minister said experts in Tuta Absoluta containment from Agronet Nig Rep. of United Kingdom will be drafted in few days to affected states, whose profile was studied and how to deal with the disease.

“The team is expected to deliver the containment packs within the shortest possible time. This will enable farmers resume production activities with desired yield to reverse the precarious situation at hand.

The treatment is expensive, a plant may cost N5 to treat, and will be from the nursery. The fund for this will be from the budget but also from other sources as well, and we shall source the fund as from tomorrow (Wednesday). Soon there will be tomatoes for Nigerians because they don’t too long to grow.

“The intervention programme will involve containment packs for 50, 000ha to be used among the tomato producing states, capacity development on containment solution, and surveillance/monitoring in all the 774 local government areas”, he said.

Crime / Man To Clean Court Premises For Punching Friend’s Nose by Btppolitics: 3:01pm On May 25, 2016
A 28- year –old man, Sa’abi Yahuza, is to clean the premises of a Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, as punishment, for punching the nose of his friend.

The court which premises he is to clean, handed down the punishment on Wednesday, after Yahuza had pleaded guilty to a count charge of assault. Yahuza, a labourer and a resident of River Part Estate, Abuja, had admitted acting wrongly by punching the nose of his friend.

“I plead with this court to reduce my punishment for I know I am guilty of the offence; I am so sorry for what I did. “I have a wife and children to take care of; please sir, tamper justice with mercy; I will never fight or beat anybody again,’’ he pleaded.

The Trial Judge, Mr Garba Ogbede, said the convict’s plea had saved the court the pains of a prolonged prosecution, and that the punishment would have been more severe had he not pleaded guilty.

However, Ogbede added that in arriving at the sentence, the court took into consideration that the convict had a wife and children to look after. He then warned the convict to be of good behavior, stressing that the court frowned at acts of violence. “Desist from such acts in future and become a better citizen and human being,’’ he advised.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Oporomo Vivian, had told the court that one Yusuf Harauna of the same address with the convict reported the matter at the Lugbe Police Station on May 19. Vivian said that Yahuza, on the same date, had a misunderstanding with Harauna .

“In the process, the convict punched the complainant’s nose, leading to a serious nose bleeding,” she said. She said further that the crime, which Yahuza had earlier during police investigation confessed to committing, contravened Section 265 of the Penal Code.

Politics / See This Woman Who Is Waiting For Buhari’s N5000 Cash Transfer by Btppolitics: 12:38pm On May 24, 2016

Zainab Danjuma, a mother of seven and a subsistence farmer is waiting to receive her share of Buhari’s N5000 cash transfer.

Zainab was abandoned by her husband in 2014 and at that time, she was heavily pregnant with Taiba and Hazanatu, the twins who now share the daily chores of farming with her. Typical of most Nigerian women, Zainab did soldier on, in spite of the absence of her better half.

She was able to build a room at Nitel village along Bill Clinton Drive, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Road, Abuja which is about 1km away from the toll gate.

After she was abandoned by her husband with the children, she then moved into her one room mud house along with her seven children. Though the barely literate Bassa woman claimed her first child is 20 years old, he is still living with her.

Zainab said she was formerly selling food stuff in that community until she ran out of capital as a result of bad debts.

Not one to be deterred, Zainab then looked for a piece of land along the Airport Road not too far from the place she calls home, to farm in order to feed her children.

But of course, she is not making enough from the subsistence farming to send all the children to school, hence only two of them are at present in school

She certainly qualifies as one of the vulnerable people that President Buhari’s administration has promised N5000 monthly cash transfer.

Politics / N450m Bribery Scam: EFCC Quizzes Shinkafi, Senator by Btppolitics: 4:21pm On May 22, 2016
FORMER Governor of Zamfara State, Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi and a Senator, Hassan Muhammed Nasiha, who is the state PDP chairman are the latest suspects interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with the N23.29billion poll bribery scam.

They were questioned over the N450million allegedly allocated to the Zamfara State chapter of PDP out of the bribe sum.

The cash was said to have been handed over to the state PDP by a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda.

A top source in EFCC said the N450million was received by a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) ,Aminu Ahmed Nahuce and one Alhaji Mallaha on Bashir Yuguda’s instruction.

The cash was allegedly shared in Yuguda’s house under his supervision.

Yuguda reportedly gave EFCC detectives the names of the beneficiaries of the money as ex-Governor Shinkafi (N15million) and Hassan Muhammed Nasiha, former Senator and State PDP Chairman Zamfara State and his executives N15million.

One well placed source said: “In his statement, Shinkafi alleged that he was told about the money, and promise was made to release the money to him at the appropriate time.”

“On his part, Nasiha claimed that, he only benefitted about N2million contrary to what Yuguda told EFCC that it was N15million. He said he refunded the said money to EFCC.

“But the two leaders are currently in detention to assist us in our investigation. The former governor was still making more statement as I am talking to you. He is however cooperating with us.”

The EFCC also claimed that Yuguda had released the list of other beneficiaries of the N450million.

“These are:13 Zamfara Local Government Councils N26 million each totaling N338 million. Gusau Local Government Council being the State capital was given N46 million; House of Representatives Member Bello Matawalle (N10 million); Senator Sahabi Ya’u (N5million); Malami Aliyu Yen Doto the PDP Deputy Governor candidate 2015 election (N5million); Biliya Shinkafi (N5million); Sani Birnin Magaji (N5million); Party Exco (N5million) printing of Party Tag (N6million) and Committee of Party Supervisors (N10million).

Crime / Two Die As Suspected Herdsmen Attack Ekiti Community by Btppolitics: 10:32pm On May 21, 2016

The residents of Oke-Akoko in Ikole Local Government Council of Ekiti State now live in palpable fear as suspected herdsmen invaded the community yesterday's evening during which two men died and several others sustained various degrees of injury.

An investigation by SaharaReporters revealed that one of the dead men was simply identified as Lekan Arosanyin, though the second casualty's identity still remained unknown while other four victims that sustained serious injuries have been taken to a private hospital in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Our correspondent gathered from one of the residents in the community, Mrs Grace Olofin, that the herdsmen invaded the area at about 8 pm in group with dangerous weapons including guns, bows and arrows and started shooting sporadically.

Olofin added that the residents of the town fled into the bush in different directions for safety.

Meanwhile, it was unofficially learnt that a detachment of mobile policemen had been dispatched to the area, while an officer who preferred anonymity said the matter is under investigation.

Efforts to contact the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) proved abortive as at press time, just as the reason for the attack remained sketchy.

Politics / NLC Strike Day 2 : Labour Congress To Restrategise by Btppolitics: 9:32am On May 19, 2016
It's day two and The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliate groups now plan to restrategise on how to make sure the second day of their industrial action will be successful.

The labour unions in the country began an indefinite strike on Wednesday, May 18, to ask for the reversal of fuel pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) known as petrol from the N145 which the removal of fuel subsidy.

This was in spite of a court injunction restraining them from carrying out same action, especially after the federal government, in a meeting with the union leaders on Tuesday night, had agreed to have a committee to review the fuel pump price and the minimum wage issue.

There was an impediment on their movement in Lagos as police officers tried to stop them from moving towards Airport Road in Ikeja area of the state, but the unionists told the security operatives that there were supposed to support and not stop them in the struggle.

And even when a vast majority of Nigerians decided to ignore the industrial action and stay at home, the protesters insisted that their demonstration on the first day for sensitisation of Nigerians.

To compound matters, only a handful of states complied with the directives of NLC’s national body as there have been reports of discord within the caucus of the union but the union insisted Wednesday, that their members would storm the streets on Thursday until their requests have been granted by the federal government.

“There will be no work tomorrow (Thursday) because we are all in this together and it is because of the people that we are on the streets.

“Believe me, we shall be more than this number tomorrow because other members will join us. We are not alone in this struggle, it is about the suffering masses, the oppressed, the downtrodden,” said by one of the union leaders.

In the statement signed by Peter Ozo-Eson, NLC’s secretary general, the union added: “No level of comfort today or primordial sentiments should blind us to the cruel realities of the increase in the pump price of the petroleum products as what we are seeing is just the beginning.”

The unionists plan on converging at the Berger roundabout in Lagos on thursday morning.

Politics / PDP Attack Governors Fayose And Mimiko by Btppolitics: 8:57am On May 16, 2016
Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose and his Ondo counterpart, Olusegun Mimiko have been attacked by the Vice Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) for conducting elections for the zone.

Elected officials of the party in the zone had on Thursday approached a Lagos Federal High Court praying it to stop the zone from holding its zonal congress. A prayer the court had granted.

However, the two governors had disobeyed the court order and gone on to hold a congress in Akure.

According to a statement signed by the southwest vice-chairman, the zonal congress held by Fayose and Mimiko is illegal.

“The decision of the national leadership of our great party and INEC to obey the court order is commendable,” the statement reads. “However, they must go beyond mere rhetoric and stand firm.

“Going forward, they have a duty to issue reports invalidating the exercise even before the court nullifies the contraption called the zonal congress.

“They should show to all and sundry that the age of impunity and political cum executive recklessness is gone for good. And that no one, no matter how powerful, is bigger than the law.

“It is on this note that I wish to implore all our respectable governors, leaders, elders and other stakeholders, to stand up for the truth and caution governors Fayose and Mimiko. They should desist from plunging the party into avoidable crisis.

“For instance, the so-called officers and delegates who emerged from the illegal congress could contaminate the national convention and render its outcome null and void, if they are allowed to participate in the convention at the expense of the legitimate officers and delegates.

“All we are saying is that there is no justification for the election of new officers into executive positions in the zone when the tenure of the current officers has not expired.”

Crime / [SHOCKING] Bird Transforms To Old Woman In Lagos by Btppolitics: 8:21am On May 16, 2016
The people of Agbado-Ijaye allegedly woke up to a very bizarre occurrence of a bird that allegedly transformed into a young woman, today. Moji Delano Blog reports that the incident occurred at about 5:30-6:00 this morning, May 15. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter The eyewitness narrated what he saw: “I was driving home this morning along Agbado-Ijaiye road when I suddenly heard people screaming in Yoruba ” the bird has turned into a woman, the bird has transformed into a human being.” I parked some meters away and walk towards the scene-a gutter opposite LADO filling station-where an angry crowd was slowing gathering.

Two eye witnesses present in the crowd who raised alarm said they were passing by when a bird suddenly fell into the gutter and then suddenly transformed into a young woman.

” At some point a man joins the woman in the gutter whispering into her ears. The crowd started asking questions as to his relationship with the alleged bird-lady but the guy quickly disassociated himself from her. Nobody knows who the guy is but he appears to be someone who understands the supernatural and was trying to communicate with her because the crowd didn’t understand the dialect of Yoruba language she was speaking. However when he saw the the crowd was getting irate, he disassociated himself from the lady. PAY “She spoke in a Yoruba dialect people present didn’t understand. But what some people tried to make out from what she told them was that she was instructed to go and get something during a witchcraft meeting and she complained that it was dangerous because it’s almost morning. However she said they insisted and while flying a powerful force struck her and she found herself in the gutter.”

The eyewitness also said that the crowd was beating the woman up with sticks before he left. Although he tried to dissuade the crowd from doing so, but it all fell on deaf hears. Also, a call was put across to the nearest police station which was supposedly less than 1 kilometer away but the police didn’t show up, at least as at the time the source left the scene.

The Federal Government on Wednesday announced the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit,PMS, otherwise known as petrol, meaning that Nigerians will now have to buy the product for N145 per litre.

Before now, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and the Minister of state for petroleum resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu had hinted on the removal of the controversial subsidy which is believed to be the major cause of the crisis in the nation’s petroleum sector.

However, BOVAS filling station who became popular via social media, for selling petrol at the normal price of 87 Naira per litre even when other filling stations were selling at 120 Naira per litre has decided to follow the band wagon.

BTPPoliticsToday gathered that BOVAS petrol station as at this morning, 12th May 2016, has jacked up her PMS pump price to 145 naira per litre, yielding to the pressure from the FG and to the disappointment of it’s faithful customers.
