What’s In A Name? Everything! (2)

‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.’ 2 Chronicles 20:15

When Israel was threatened by the armies of Amalek, God gave them a glorious victory. Realising that God was fighting the battle for them, Moses built an altar to Yahweh-Nissi: the Lord my banner. Fighting our own battles was never God’s idea. The Bible says, ‘The Lord is a man of war.’ (Exodus 15:3 KJV) ‘The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.’ (Exodus 14:14 KJV) ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged... for the battle is not yours, but God’s.’

As human beings we get exhausted and discouraged because we keep trying to fight in our own strength. We engage in fruitless cycles of repentance, resolution, struggle, defeat, discouragement, and repenting all over again. The only spiritual conflict that’s ever successfully won is the one God fights for us. He doesn’t expect us to win the battle but to let Him win it on our behalf. ‘But aren’t we supposed to fight too?’ you ask. Yes, we’re to ‘fight the good fight of faith.’ (1 Timothy 6:12 KJV)

Ours isn’t a battle of exhausting effort, it’s the battle of believing. ‘But aren’t we supposed to wrestle like Jacob did?’ First of all, Jacob didn’t win by wrestling, he won by being rendered too weak to keep wrestling. Secondly, his victory lay in surrender to God. Are you worn out from the battle? Are you at the end of your rope? Then you’re just where God wants you! Let go and trust Yahweh-Nissi to prevail for you, because ‘the battle is not yours, but God’s’!

Stand up and declare with Paul, ‘When I am weak, then am I strong.’ (2 Corinthians 12:10 KJV)

What’s In A Name? Everything! (1)

Thu, 16 Sep 2021

‘You alone are the Most High over all the earth.’ Psalm 83:18

The Israelites called God Yahweh, a name they thought of as incommunicable and inexplicable. The name means the ‘self-existing one’; the ‘I AM’. He was before all things, the Creator of all things; an awesome but seemingly impersonal, unknowable being. However, God wanted us to know Him in a personal way, so in Scripture He added five revealing titles to the name Yahweh, five word-portraits to help us understand and relate to Him. The Israelites usually discovered the truth of these word-portraits during times of crisis and distress. And they’ll encourage you, too, during your time of need.

Yahweh-Yireh: the Lord will see, the Lord will provide. Abraham was about to sacrifice his son when God provided a lamb as an offering in Isaac’s place. And in response Abraham called God Yahweh-Yireh, the Lord who sees and provides. But it doesn’t just apply to Abraham. The New Testament references many counterparts to the Lord who sees our needs and provides answers. Jesus said, ‘Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.’ (Matthew 6:32 NLT)

Like a caring responsive parent, God sees His children’s needs before they do, and provides the solution. Before their shoes wear out, their father provides new ones. They don’t have to beg, bargain and plead. Maybe you’re wondering how come you don’t always get what you ask for. Because God knows what you really need—you don’t! Think about it: it’s possible for your wants to be gratified and your real needs go unmet. Remember Yahweh-Yireh sees your needs, and because He sees them He will provide for them! It’s that simple!

Practise Self-Control

Wed, 15 Sep 2021

‘Do not give in to sinful desires.’ Romans 6:12

Paul writes: ‘Consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ… Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires… [or] let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God.’ (Romans 6:11–13 NLT) If you let it, your body will lead you astray. It’s not that it’s evil, but it has certain appetites which are always ready to respond to surrounding stimuli, all of which are terribly appealing and temporarily satisfying.

Chuck Swindoll writes: ‘Life on earth is really nothing more than a string of moments… And I don’t want my testimony for Jesus Christ to be shattered by a single moment of indulging my flesh. I don’t want one moment of rage or pride or lust to cast a shadow over a lifetime of walking with my Lord. Frankly, I fear that possibility. And do you know what? I want to fear that possibility. When I stop fearing it—I’m in grave danger.’

So how do you deal with your carnal appetites? The only way is to make God’s Word your code of conduct and refuse to compromise. And if you need a role model you won’t find a better one than Jesus. He said, ‘Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves.’ (Matthew 16:24 NIV) Each day, look for an opportunity to deny yourself in some small area. You’ll be surprised how hard it is! But the payoff comes later when you need to deny yourself in a big area of life that has much more riding on it.

Spiritual Growth Is A Group Project

Tue, 14 Sep 2021

‘Let us go into the house of the Lord.’ Psalm 122:1

The psalmist said, ‘I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.”’ Do you feel that way about God’s house too? And if not, why not?

Paul writes: ‘You are members of God’s family. Together, we are His house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus Himself. We are carefully joined together in Him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through Him you... are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by His Spirit.’ (Ephesians 2:19–22 NLT) There are times when you need to be alone with God in prayer; there are times you’ll only find the answer you seek when you’re with God’s people. When those who are indwelt by God’s Spirit meet for worship, teaching, encouragement and service, God shows up in a powerful way. You grow spiritually as you experience His presence, hear His Word, and fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Every time you gather with other members of Christ’s body, it reminds you again that you’re on the winning side.

It’s hard to celebrate by yourself. When you’ve something worth celebrating you generally call people together so you can share the joy, right? Jesus is so excited about His victory at the cross, that He calls us together every week to celebrate what He accomplished for us. And celebration, like spiritual growth, is a group project.

God Will Never Abandon You

Mon, 13 Sep 2021

‘Everyone abandoned me. May it not be charged against them. But the Lord stood with me.’ 2 Timothy 4:16–17

When someone you love dies, divorces or deserts you, it hurts deeply. Even Paul wasn’t exempt. Here are some of his last words: ‘Timothy, please come as soon as you can. Demas has deserted me… Only Luke is with me. Bring Mark with you when you come, for he will be helpful to me… Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm… The first time I was brought before the judge, no one came with me. Everyone abandoned me… But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength… He rescued me from certain death. Yes, and the Lord will deliver me from every evil attack and bring me safely into His heavenly Kingdom.’ (2 Timothy 4:9–18 NLT)

The fact is, you can survive without others but you can‘t survive without God. That’s why He strips away things that make us dependent on people. He sends certain individuals into your life to help build your faith and develop your character, and when they’re gone, to leave you with the assurance that God is in control. The loss of loved ones: (1) develops your spiritual muscle; (2) tests your resilience; (3) shows you the scope of God’s power.

When Moses died and Joshua was left in charge, God told him, ‘As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.’ (Joshua 1:5 NKJV) That’s something Joshua could never have learned while Moses was still in the picture. And it’s a lesson you can’t learn while you’re looking to someone else for your answers. So, turn to the Lord. Let the One who said, ‘Peace, be still’ (Mark 4:39 NKJV) to the storm on Galilee, speak peace to the thing that’s troubling you today.

Don’t Lose Sight Of Your Goals

Sun, 12 Sep 2021

‘His heart is established; he will not be afraid.’ Psalm 112:8

To achieve success in life there are three obstacles you’ll have to be aware of and overcome:

(1) Weariness. Racehorses run at approximately the same speed; sometimes the difference between winning and losing the race comes down to their ‘heart’ to win. So, look into your heart today and see if you are truly committed. ‘Do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.’ (Hebrews 10:35–36 NKJV)

(2) Fear. When it comes to commitment, there are four kinds of people. a) Cop-outs: people who have no goals and who don’t commit. b) Hold-outs: people who don’t know if they can reach their goals so they’re afraid to commit. c) Drop-outs: people who start towards a goal but give up when the going gets tough. d) All-outs: people who set goals, commit to them and pay the price to reach them. Which one of the four are you? Fear and faith will always be present in your life, and the one you choose will determine whether you succeed or fail.

(3) Complacency. Successful businessman Ray Kroc said, ‘As long as you’re green, you’re growing. As soon as you’re ripe, you start to rot.’ If you’re wise, you’ll take regular rest periods to refresh, renew, and refocus. But you must not settle for yesterday’s successes, or coast on today’s momentum. Be like Paul: ‘I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race.’ (Philippians 3:13–14 NLT)

Love Is A Verb

Sat, 11 Sep 2021

‘He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.’ 1 John 4:8

Love is not just a noun; it’s a verb. It’s not what you think or feel; it’s what you do. Elizabeth Geikie was a Salvation Army missionary in India. One day she heard a scream and, running out of her hut, she saw some men carrying another. They laid him at her feet. He was in agony. She examined him and realised his foot was horribly swollen because of a huge imbedded thorn. She had no forceps and couldn’t get a grip with her fingers, so she knelt down and clamped her teeth around the thorn’s protruding end and slowly removed it. Then she bathed and bandaged the wound.

The next day the men were back. ‘Why is it that you, a white woman, would want to save the life of a man by placing your lips, the most sacred part of the body, against his foot, the most despised part of the body?’ She said, ‘Because my God, Who loves and values all men, asked me to do it.’ After that, the men soon they put their faith in Jesus.

Busy person, it’s easy to see people as irritants and inconveniences standing in the way of your getting things done. What’s hard, is to rise above your self-centred feelings and love them. Maybe you think this is no big deal! Think again. The Bible says, ‘Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.’ (1 John 4:7–8 NKJV)

‘Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you.’ Proverbs 3:3

Before the Passover meal, the disciples forgot to wash Jesus’ feet. Bad performance! After Jesus explained the bread and wine symbolised His upcoming crucifixion, they started arguing who would be the greatest in the Kingdom. Bad performance! Within hours they’d fallen asleep on Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Bad performance! And He knew Peter would deny him. Bad performance! So how did Jesus grade them? He didn’t! Jesus doesn’t grade people. And you don’t have to either.

You’ll find wonderful rest in your soul once you stop grading people, and instead start loving them from where they are to where they need to be. Rather than rebuking the disciples, Jesus compliments, rewards, promotes, and puts them on Heaven’s roll of honour. Even after they failed to wash His feet He still desired to eat Passover with them (see Luke 22:15). Nourished by their love, He said, ‘You are those who have stood by Me in My trials. And I confer on you a Kingdom… you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom and sit on thrones.’ (Luke 22:28–30 NIV)

On His most agonising night He passed out gifts, and gave His very young disciples more than He ever gave anybody in terms of honour and glory. In His eyes they were all great. He didn’t grade them on their performance, but on their love that motivated them to forsake all and stick with Him through thick and thin.

Reimar Schultze says, ‘Don’t set up standards for yourself. That can kill you. As Jesus loved His disciples then, so He loves them now. So stop fussing and nit-picking at yourself and others!’

Care Enough To Confront

Thu, 9 Sep 2021

‘Warn and seriously advise those who are out of line.’ 1 Thessalonians 5:14

‘Warn… those who are out of line… encourage the timid and fainthearted, help and give your support to the weak.’ Sadly, we’d rather stay quiet and be popular than speak difficult truth into the lives of others. Henry Blackaby writes: ‘A church isn’t a group of individuals who happen to meet in the same place every week; it’s a spiritual body… a loving family. It’s far easier to comfort and encourage than to warn or exhort, but both are necessary. Ephesians 4:15 tells us to speak the truth in love so that the whole body may “grow up in all things”. If we don’t take the time to exhort, encourage, warn, comfort, uphold and be patient… we [all] suffer in the end. Your body doesn’t function properly when one part is hurting or performing poorly. And the church suffers when one of its members is unruly, fainthearted, weak, or falls into bad doctrine. Letting a body part fester, or not supporting a part that’s hurt, can lead to irrecoverable damage… letting serious issues go unaddressed does a grave disservice to the member in question.’

As parents we love our children too much to let bad behaviour go unchecked. Down the road we know it will negatively affect their attitude toward authority, relationships, accountability and personal discipline. We care enough to correct and guide them. Paul says, ‘If someone is trapped in sin, you should gently lead that person back to the right path. But watch out, and don’t be tempted yourself.’ (Galatians 6:1 CEV) The truth is the only safe ground to stand upon, and your goal should be to speak it in love.

When Justice Seems Denied

Wed, 8 Sep 2021

‘The Lord executes righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.’ Psalm 103:6

When OJ Simpson was tried for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown, the jury ruled: ‘Not guilty’. In court, Nicole’s mother wept and said, ‘God, where are you?’ It’s a question we ask when life seems unfair. The Bible answers, ‘For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.’ (Ecclesiastes 12:14 NKJV) But we want the score settled now. So we struggle, we question, and we doubt.

The psalmist did too: ‘How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?… Deliver the poor and needy.’ (Psalm 82:2–4 NKJV) We wrestle with such questions because they have no easy answers. Then twenty-one psalms later, David, who’d been forgiven and restored after committing adultery and murder, writes: ‘The Lord gives righteousness and justice to all who are treated unfairly… The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever. He does not punish us for all our sins; He does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. For His unfailing love towards those who fear Him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. The Lord is like a father to His children, tender and compassionate to those who fear Him. For He knows how weak we are.’ (Psalm 103:6–14 NLT)

Bottom line: the same grace and mercy that God extends towards you, He offers to the one who hurt you.

Prioritise Your Relationship With God

Tue, 7 Sep 2021

‘The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man.’ Genesis 39:2

Admission to certain social clubs depends on your family of origin: blue blood, or blue collar. Sadly some employers and some churches do that too. But God doesn’t. Imagine you were Joseph. You share a father with your siblings, but four different mothers have given birth to your brothers and sister along the way. Your dad’s a con artist. He has been one his entire life and everyone knows it. The whole family knows he cheated your uncle out of the inheritance, and then hid behind his mother’s skirts before running off like a coward to avoid being killed. Your great-uncle tricked your dad into marrying your mother’s sister, perhaps by getting your dad so drunk during the wedding breakfast that he didn’t know which sister was which. So he ended up marrying the plain one instead of the pretty one he was in love with. But that didn’t faze him, he just added to the bride list and married both of them! The one he adored couldn’t have kids, so he slept with the nanny to produce some surrogate children. And most of them truly hated their littlest-brother-but-one!

But big doors swing on little hinges, and Joseph’s life is described in one verse: ‘The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man.’ Successful in spite of family dysfunction and betrayal. Successful in spite of slander and thirteen years of false imprisonment. And with God on your side, you can overcome your beginnings and succeed too. That’s why the most important thing you can do is to build, maintain, and prioritise your relationship with God.

‘Whoever sows generously will also reap generously.’ 2 Corinthians 9:6

Jim Penner says: ‘It was a cold snowy day as my mother drove my sister and me to church. Living at the bottom of the Rocky Mountains I’d become accustomed to slipping and sliding. I remember my mother being tense… and hoping she’d have enough traction to make the curve without ploughing into the semi-truck ahead. Her tyres were bald—new ones were low on our priority list that included food and shelter. As Mom placed a cheque in the offering that day, I remember thinking there were better uses for those funds. Yet here she was tithing! Surely God would understand we had so many needs at home. But there was a contentment about her… a peace that passed understanding as she gave to the Lord cheerfully and gratefully… After the service a church elder walked over to her and said, “I see your tyres are bald… come by my shop tomorrow and I’ll give you some snow tyres.” Mom said, “But I can’t pay you.” “No problem,” he replied, “I just want to help.” That day I witnessed two levels of giving: Mom with her offering, and a kind man who wanted to help another human being.’

Big things come from little things, and ‘whoever sows generously will also reap generously.’ As John Mason observes, ‘The miraculous realm of God always has to do with multiplication… Suppose a kernel of corn produces one stalk with two ears, and each ear has 200 kernels. From those 400 kernels come 400 stalks with 160,000 kernels… all from a single kernel. Some blessings are material, some spiritual. We don’t always know what we need most, but God does, and a generous spirit opens the floodgates of Heaven.’

Don’t Short-Change Your Children

Sun, 5 Sep 2021

‘My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice!’ Proverbs 23:15

Dad, if you succeed in making a good living but fail to teach your children how to live ‘right’, your success will be empty, and you’ll end up living with regrets. The average child spends six to seven hours each day on the internet, or watching television, or interacting with their peer group. And every minute of it is creating their value system and moulding them into the person they will become. So be there for them! If you have to sacrifice materially in order to develop them spiritually, it’s a trade-off you’ll always feel good about.

Dorothy Lawe Nolte wrote words that every parent should carry with them: ‘If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn. If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight. If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy. If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty. But, if a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient. If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence. If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate. If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice. If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith. If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world.’

Solomon, who was a father, put it this way: ‘My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice!’

‘If our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace.’ Romans 8:6

Pessimism affects you spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Negativity is directly related to heart disease, immune system deficits, and the ability to cope with physical pain. The famous Mayo Clinic conducted a 30-year study of 800 patients—and the results are telling. The pessimists’ risk of early death was 19% higher than that of the optimists in the group.

In Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life, Dr Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania concluded that optimism and pessimism affect your health almost as clearly as physical factors. Have you ever said, ‘I’m sick to death of this’? Then do something about it—quickly! If you hold onto that thought for too long—it may come true. One of the great findings of modern medical science is that the words we speak don’t just affect others, they affect us too.

Indeed, sometimes they affect us even more! Words are powerful. You believe and internalise what you repeatedly say. That means you have the God-given ability to change your perception of your own abilities from limited to limitless.

Let’s be clear about what that does and doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean you can compose music like Bach or paint like Van Gogh just because you decide to and want to. But it does mean you can do whatever God has told you to do in His Word. Whatever He calls you to do, He will enable you to do. And that’ll happen when you line up what comes out of your mouth with what’s written in His Word.

‘Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.’ Philippians 4:8

Positive self-talk isn’t a new concept; it’s a Scriptural one. Paul writes, ‘Fix your thoughts on what is true… honourable… right… pure… lovely, and admirable… things that are excellent and worthy of praise.’ Here are three ways you can do that:

(1) Avoid comparisons. Each of us has a different skill set. You’re unique. The way you do things may differ from the techniques of others, but that doesn’t make it wrong. There’s almost always more than one way to achieve the same end-goal. Comparison is unwise, unfair, and fosters negativity. Unless you’re the reigning world champion, there’ll always be somebody better than you at a specific skill. So what? You don’t need another tiara!

(2) Tack on hope. The Bible says, ‘Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping—believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!”’ (Romans 4:18 NLT) And the psalmist said, ‘I will yet praise Him, my Saviour and my God.’ (Psalm 42:5 NIV) There’s power in the word ‘yet’. It can miraculously transform your ‘I can’t’ perspective, into ‘I can with a little more time’. The difference is subtle but profound.

(3) Act positively to actually become positive. In Winning the Stress Challenge Dr Nick Hall cites a study confirming that signals transmitted to a person’s brain when they’re behaving a certain way provoke similar physical and mental changes to those elicited by real emotional responses. In other words, putting on a happy face can truly make you feel happier. Try it!
