Thinking Of Yourself Less

Fri, 20 Aug 2021

‘Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.’ James 4:10

Here’s a true saying: ‘Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.’ That doesn’t mean being a doormat for people to walk on or being spineless with no convictions and opinions. True humility is acknowledging God as the source of all you have, and all you need, and always remembering to give Him credit for both.

The Bible says, ‘God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.’ (Genesis 2:7 NKJV) God’s intention for mankind was to live in Paradise and enjoy His presence every day. But we disobeyed Him and decided to live by our own rules instead of His. And the result? God said, ‘For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.’ (Genesis 3:19 NKJV) Let’s face it, on our best day we’re just dignified dirt! Although we are divinely fashioned dust, the reality is that each of us is worth an estimated seven dollars. So when you die and your components return to dirt, that’s your physical value. Pretty humbling, eh? And when you drive a luxury car, remember that seven dollars is driving it. Seven dollars is living in the suburbs. Seven dollars is wearing designer clothes. Seven dollars has more money in the bank than you’re actually worth.

Paul defines humility in these words: ‘Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves.’ (Romans 12:3 NLT) Do you want to know what makes you truly incomparably valuable? ‘Christ in you, the hope of glory.’ (Colossians 1:27 NKJV)

Christianity Etc › Your 'Euroclydon' by Btruth(op):
Your ‘Euroclydon’

Thu, 19 Aug 2021

‘A tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon.’ Acts 27:14

The ship Paul was sailing on to Rome was wrecked by a storm named Euroclydon, meaning typhoon, tempest or cyclone. Here are some valuable lessons we can learn from his experience.

(1) God can make a bad situation work for your good. Because of this shipwreck, Paul ended up on Malta, where the people heard the Gospel for the first time. Plus, when he and his followers ‘departed, they provided such things as were necessary.’ (Acts 28:10 NKJV) Sometimes your problem can provide a platform for God to work in ways that’ll amaze you. Your future isn’t, nor ever will be, in the hands of people. It’s in God’s hands, and what He owns He protects and provides for.

(2) To reach your God-ordained destination you’ll have to sail through storms. Paul said, ‘All hope that we would be saved was finally given up.’ (Acts 27:20 NKJV) There’ll be days when you wonder how you’re going to make it, but by God’s grace you will (see Psalm 37:34).

(3) Storms reveal how well you know the Lord. Paul said, ‘Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, “Do not be afraid, Paul.”’ (Acts 27:23–24 NIV) In hard times you discover the strength of your connection to God.

(4) He can bring success from what looks like failure. Notice two particular things in this story: (a) You may have to throw some things overboard to reach your destination (see v. 18). (b) Despite your best efforts, occasionally you’ll run aground (see v. 26). That’s when you must remember what God promised you—and stand on it (see v. 25).

Have You Consulted God About It?

Wed, 18 Aug 2021

‘But they did not ask the Lord.’ Joshua 9:14

When you consult God before making decisions, it keeps you out of all sorts of trouble. Joshua learned this the hard way. He had just conquered Jericho, the biggest city in the Promised Land. Flushed with victory, the Israelites felt like they didn’t need to consult God concerning their next move. But over-confidence can be deadly!

The Gibeonites, one of the enemy nations in the Promised Land, realised they couldn’t win against God’s people, so they sent negotiators in to make peace with them. And it worked. Even though the Gibeonites were lying, Joshua presumed they were telling the truth and signed a treaty. And it proved to be one of the biggest mistakes of his life. From that day on the Gibeonites became a constant thorn in Israel’s side. Joshua lived to regret that he ‘did not ask the Lord.’

Some of the oldest hymns contain the greatest truths. Here’s one: ‘O what peace we often forfeit; O what needless pain we bear. All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.’ Are you a ‘make-it-happen-in-your-own-strength’ kind of person? There’s a fine line between God-given assurance and self-sufficiency, and when you cross that line it can cost you dearly. If you’ve a tendency to move too quickly or operate in your own strength and skill, read these words carefully and prayerfully: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes.’ (Proverbs 3:5–7 NKJV)

To Advance, You Must Overcome Adversity

‘In everything and in every way we show that we truly are God’s servants.’ 2 Corinthians 6:4

The Christian life comes with blessings—and battles. You can’t have one without the other. Paul describes it this way: ‘In everything and in every way we show that we truly are God’s servants. We have always been patient, though we have had a lot of trouble, suffering, and hard times. We have been beaten, put in jail, and hurt in riots. We have worked hard and gone without sleep or food. But we have kept ourselves pure and have been understanding, patient, and kind. The Holy Spirit has been with us, and our love has been real. We have spoken the truth, and God’s power has worked in us. In all our struggles we have said and done only what is right. Whether we were honoured or dishonoured or praised or cursed, we always told the truth about ourselves. But some people said we did not. We are unknown to others, but well known to you. We seem to be dying, and yet we are still alive. We have been punished, but never killed, and we are always happy, even in times of suffering. Although we are poor, we have made many people rich. And though we own nothing, everything is ours.’ (2 Corinthians 6:4–10 CEV)

God will fight for you on your battlefield, take you through your storm, and turn your season of adversity into a season of advancement. When your faith is under fire it attracts His power and brings His grace into your situation. The Bible says, ‘Even though Jesus was God’s Son, He learned obedience by the things He suffered.’ (Hebrews 5:8 NLT) So rejoice, you’re not losing—you’re gaining!

God Wants You To Succeed

Mon, 16 Aug 2021

‘God gave him success.’ 2 Chronicles 26:5

Think about these questions and answer them honestly.

(1) Do you believe you can be successful and spiritual at the same time? Some folks equate poverty with humility and conclude that successful people can’t be humble. Not so. ‘As long as [Uzziah] sought the Lord, God gave him success.’ Success doesn’t give you the right to look down on others but, when successful people speak, others listen. Leaders like Joseph and Daniel influenced entire nations for God. The fact is, we’ve a message of hope others need to hear, but without adequate resources, how will they hear it? (See Romans 10:14–17.) If you’ve been settling for less, pray for greater faith and start aiming higher in life.

(2) Are you afraid of success? Perhaps you fear the pressures and the price tag that accompany it. Leadership is lonely; maybe you’d rather be with the crowd. Or maybe you’ve been knocked down and you’re afraid to get up again. When Thomas Edison was asked about his success, he replied, ‘I start where other men leave off!’ John Foster Dulles, former U.S. Secretary of State said, ‘The measure of success isn’t whether you’ve a tough problem to deal with, but whether it’s the same problem you had last year.’ Paul wrote, ‘We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going.’ (2 Corinthians 4:9 TLB)

(3) Are you satisfied with the way things are right now? If you’re not, accept responsibility for your life and take a step of faith. Ultimately the only one who can stop you from becoming the person God intended you to be—is you! Bottom line: God wants you to succeed.

Does Your Loved One Need A Miracle Today?

Sun, 15 Aug 2021

‘Four people came up, carrying a man on a mat.’ Mark 2:3

‘Jesus was still teaching when four people came up, carrying a man on a mat because he could not walk. But because of the crowd, they could not get him to Jesus. So they made a hole in the roof above him and let the man down in front of everyone. When Jesus saw how much faith they had, He said to the man… “Get up! Pick up your mat and go on home.”’ (Mark 2:2–5, 11 CEV)

If your loved one needs a miracle today:

(1) Use your faith. Even though you’re praying for someone who may have little or no faith of their own, God will honour your faith on their behalf. ‘When Jesus saw how much faith they [the man’s friends] had, He said to the man… “Get up!”’

(2) Refuse to give up. Do what these four friends did. The crowd was a problem—so they went around it. The roof was a problem—so they broke through it. They refused to give up or get discouraged. Bottom line: if what you’ve tried so far hasn’t worked, ask God and He will show you the way. Doctors can treat people, but only God can heal them within and without, so bring your loved one to Him in prayer.

(3) Look for faith partners. It took four people to get this man to Jesus, so don’t do it alone. Find someone who’ll agree with you in prayer and who will be fervent and persistent in asking God for His help and believing that He is a miracle-working God who still heals today.

Are You Struggling With Temptation?

Sat, 14 Aug 2021

‘Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.’ 1 Peter 5:8

Your areas of vulnerability will change as the seasons of your life change, but the truth is that you’ll always be tempted in some way. But the good news is that you can be tempted and triumphant. Jesus showed us how to do it. When He faced the tempter in the wilderness He stood on God’s Word. Here are some Scriptures you can stand on when you’re tempted.

(1) ‘The Lord knows how to rescue Godly people from their trials.’ (2 Peter 2:9 NLT)

(2) ‘This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and… find grace to help us when we need it most.’ (Hebrews 4:15–16 NLT)

(3) ‘Put on every piece of God’s armour so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.’ (Ephesians 6:13 NLT)

(4) ‘The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet… the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.’ (Romans 16:20 NLT)

(5) ‘I have given you the power… to defeat the power of your enemy Satan.’ (Luke 10:19 CEV)

(6) ‘The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.’ (1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT)

Make Things Right With God

Fri, 13 Aug 2021

‘Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.’ James 4:10

In the Old Testament, the priests were consecrated to God by blood marked on their right ear lobe, their right thumb, and the big toe of their right foot. That meant they were called to honour God in their hearing, their skills, and their daily walk. You can’t just do your own thing; you’re called to walk according to God’s Word. When you don’t, God will call you to repentance. And if you don’t repent, He will discipline you. ‘Do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one He loves.’ (Hebrews 12:5–6 NIV) Note two important phrases:

(1) ‘Do not make light of the Lord’s discipline.’ Your ‘Nobody’s-going-to-tell-me-what-to-do!’ attitude will rob you of God’s best and prevent Him from using you effectively. ‘God opposes the proud, but shows favour to the humble.’ (James 4:6 NIV)

(2) ‘Do not lose heart when He rebukes you.’ Instead of seeing God’s correction as rejection, see it as proof that you’re His child… that He has a plan for your life… and that it begins when you humble yourself and do what He tells you. God’s patience is amazing—but He won’t wait forever. He said of a Jezebel in the early church, ‘I gave her time to repent… and she did not… I will cast her into a sickbed.’ (Revelation 2:21–22 NKJV) On the other hand, when Ahab, the original Jezebel’s wicked husband, humbled himself, God healed and restored him. Humbling yourself before God will turn things around in your life when nothing else will work. So, the word for today is: make things right with God!

Work On Your Marriage

Thu, 12 Aug 2021

‘The two are united into one.’ Matthew 19:5

Dr Joyce Brothers once joked, ‘My husband and I have never considered divorce… sometimes murder, but never divorce!’ Getting married is easy; living together successfully is hard. So how do you do it? By identifying issues that must be resolved, working on them, and learning to live with the rest! Snoring, endless hours of watching tv, not communicating, dirty socks on the floor, unmade beds—your partner’s habits can drive you crazy. And since Jesus said, ‘Let no one split apart what God has joined together’ (Matthew 19:6 NLT), how should you handle conflicts when they arise?

(1) Attack the problem instead of each other.

(2) Keep your voice low, stay calm, and your partner is more likely to pay attention.

(3) Choose the best time to address the issue, not when the kids are hungry or you’re both tired.

(4) Remember, men and women see things differently. So, when your spouse expresses their point of view, don’t sigh and roll your eyes. What marriage therapists refer to as ‘active listening’, calls for affirming your spouse through paraphrasing, validation, and positive feedback.

(5) There’ll be times when each of you will have to compromise.

(6) Choose your words carefully. ‘Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.’ (Ephesians 4:29 NIV) ‘Encourage one another.’ (1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV) ‘Forgiving one another.’ (Ephesians 4:32 NLT) ‘Pray for each other.’ (James 5:16 NIV) ‘Spur one another on towards love and good deeds.’ (Hebrews 10:24 NIV) ‘Carry each other’s burdens.’ (Galatians 6:2 NIV) ‘Giving preference to one another.’ (Romans 12:10 NKJV)

Now work on your marriage!

Make Criticism Work For You

Wed, 11 Aug 2021

‘Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.’ Proverbs 12:1

There are two kinds of criticism:

(1) Unfair criticism. There’ll always be people who love to rain on your parade; people who try to build themselves up by tearing others down. Mark Twain said, ‘Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.’

(2) Constructive criticism. Solomon said, ‘Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is the rebuke of a wise judge to a listening ear.’ (Proverbs 25:12 NIV) There’s a major obstacle you must overcome in order to reach your highest potential. What is it? Our natural reluctance to discover anything unflattering about ourselves. When you erect defences against your inadequacies and try to hide your faults, you close the door to a vital source of self-knowledge. And in so doing, you deny yourself the joy of growing.

Every one of us can improve what we’re doing or the way we’re doing it. In fact, if you’re still celebrating what you did last year—you’re not making enough progress this year. After winning his third world championship, instead of having a big celebration, bull rider Tuff Hedeman moved on to Denver to start a new season—the whole process over again. His line of reasoning was: ‘The bull in Denver won’t be impressed with what I did last week.’

Whether you’re an untested rookie or a veteran, if you want to be a champion tomorrow, you must be teachable today. Or as Solomon puts it: ‘Whoever learns from correction is wise.’ (Proverbs 15:5 NLT)

Things Are Going To Get Better

Tue, 10 Aug 2021

‘I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good.’ Jeremiah 29:11

Are you grieving the death of a loved one? Are you walking through the fires of divorce? Have you lost your home or your job? Are you trying to pick up the pieces of your life and start over? God says, ‘The plans I have for you… are plans for good.’ When you involve God, the best is yet to be! But it’s impossible to move forward when you’re trapped in the past.

When ‘The Great Paderewski’ first started studying piano, his teacher told him his hands were too small to master the keyboard. Yet the fire in his soul drove him to become a world-renowned pianist. When ‘The Great Caruso’ first started studying voice, his teacher said he sounded like the wind whistling through the window. But today he’s remembered as one of the world’s greatest tenors. If you need inspiration, look no further than Christ. ‘Keep your mind on Jesus, who put up with many insults from sinners. Then you won’t get discouraged and give up.’ (Hebrews 12:3 CEV)

When it comes to your losses, grieve them and leave them. ‘Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.’ (Isaiah 43:18–19 NIV) The word for today is: keep looking ahead, because things are going to get better.
