boluwajokosegun:
Thank you Buchika, sorry am just trying to find a way out to maximize the profit in agric biz for farmers. I think it will be better to employ 2 casual workers that will uproot the cassava while 2- 3 permanent staff will do the peeling of certain quanties that they can peel under 12 hours after harvest so as to get white garri. A small reseach will be done to find out what quanty 2-3 person can peel under 12 hours.

We can just be planting for others to make more money.....REMEMBER THAT THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE IN NIGERIA IS IN PROCESSING

Or we form a group and set up micro scale cassava processing.

please can we brain storm because there is big money in cassava farming ...there is no waste in the business, from the leaves to the stem and the tuber even the extracted water is usefull......

@boluwajokosegun you re welcome, you re right, there is a need to brainstorm on cassava business, but then it is important to look at the value chain and identify the best that suits you, a good producer might not be a good processor meaning you can produce cassava very cheap but won't be able to process cheap. if we can brainstorm on how one can cultivate a hectare of cassava that yields at least 20 tons of tubers with 80000 eighty thousand naira, which I believe is very possible you ll make enough profit that ll stop you from thinking how much the processor is making, then we have to brain storm on how to be able to process at small scale level. all the same you made a very good suggestion

Why isn't improved varieties good for garri?
..
Hw can one employ the services of extension wkers? What is involve?
just visit your state ministry of agriculture and ask for adp office you ll be guided more on how to get an extension officer . each variety of cassava tubers has different moisture contents. the higher the moisture content the better for industrial starch purpose. and less moisture better for garri

any body in the east that has cassava should go to NSM ULI IHIALA LGA ANAMBRA STATE. I assure you you can't meet their demand no matter the size of your farm (NSM =Nigeria Starch Mill)

@ Buchika, very good advise but there is a way out to processing, why not employ two staff on monthly salary who will help in the processing work , get staff who can peel & fry

Can the house brainstorm on the way out or visit some small scale firm to find out how they manage it.
ten permanent staffs cannot process 250kg of garri manually from uprooting to frying in a day, remember the moment you uproot the tuber it starts to deteriorate, you must finish the peeling under 12 hours if you want white garri. bro either you sell tubers to garri making village women or you sell to big time processors like NSM Uli. either you do very micro scale cassava processing or very big time processing like NSM, there is no room for small or medium scale cassava processing as of now. the converting ratio is 4 tons of cassava tuber = 1 ton of garri

as an experienced cassava farmer my advice to anyone who want s to go into commercial cassava farming is make sure your farmland is tractorable that's it's well destumped, minimise manual labour to the least possible, make sure your farmland access is motorable, be friendly with your state ADP extensions officers, know your market target, if it's only for garri, cultivate the best local variety, but if it's for starch go for all these TME419 or IITA improved variety. if you want to process commercial also and you don't have an efficient peeling system forget it you won't make it. the reason village women makes profit is they do all the processing themselves they pay no one from uprooting to frying, they pay only for grating and pressing which is very very insignificant.

Wow, peeling is quit a problem. Check out these peeler I was talking about: http://www.cassavabiz.org/postharvest/3a_phequip.htm#ncampeeler.
bro I 've seen all those contraption, apart from that thing that looks like knife non of the so called machine is workable. I have visited and searched all over Nigeria and online also for a peeler, gone to all the agricultural research institute in Nigeria there is none. remember I am still a small scale processor and I am looking for something to give me like 2-3 tons per hour. I saw something I believe that's workable on the internet from Brazil but it's something I can't afford cos the capacity is very high.

hmmm thats supprising. I have heard of this before and i'm still wondering how such expanse of land could be leased at a give away price. Is the road to your site motorable?
yea it's motorable but not the best of roads. it's 911 Mercedes truck that evacuate s my harvest. it's still manageable. for me farming land is not the problem at all. ask around.

I think it's safer to own the land on which you farm. Villagers can really frustrate a leasee.
but you have to start from somewhere, I didn't experience any problem from the umunna that rented me the parcel of land moreover it's renewed every 18 months that's the expected lifespan of cassava. where is the money to buy such expanse of land

How do u currently peel the cassava? I've once came across a tool that's more effective than knive.
my brother I engage village women who charge 600 naira per wheel barrow and they peel with knives. it took almost 4 days for me to process 3 tons of cassava to finish product. the labour cost is mind blowing. that's why I am looking for a small scale peeler that can peel at even 90% efficient rate but I am yet to get one. I got something from futa akure back then but I realised after installation that it's crap, the village women is way faster than the machine and it chop the cassava tuber thereby wasting it and on top of that I 've to fuel it. brother it's a very long story.

That's for those in the west and not here in the east, but I stand to be corrected
I rented 166 plots of land where I cultivated my cassava 12500 naira total cost plus 2 gallons of palm wine. not up to 2000 naira per hectar and its within awka axis

Do u process to cassava or flour?
my processing factory was designed to produce both garri and flour, but my greatest challenge in the business is not the end product cos I hardly meet demand. my problem is how to peel the tubers efficiently mechanically and drying

Phones / Re: New Glo Data Plans For Smartphones by Buchika: 1:35pm On Dec 17, 2013
Okiki_Oluwa: Glo should reduce their data bundle & price like MTN.
Who cares for a 50mb data of N200 when MTN offer N5 per 5mb daily that can be renewed as many time as possible before the end of the day. Meaning, N50 for 50mb, N250 for N250mb in MTN.
Last Bullet:
Glo is still a learner.
please what's code for the mtn 5m for N5 and the plan.

wirinet:

Should you not be concerned that in a single election in a small state like anambra and with the full resources of INEC- both materially and financially, voting materials could not arrive on time in most polling boths?
Forget about who won or lost for a second, are you not concerned about INEC's ability to conduct elections after 13years of experience?
it's unfortunate we re still experiencing the same problem 13 years after but what I am trying to get across is that what happened in idemili north and south the so called apc strong hold also happened at other areas that apga won.

SLIDE waxie: Pls dnt hide this post...
Cos na true i wan yan..

Is it that u guys up east are just waking up to this very lucrative-low capital venture?

New garri processing plants are in ifo, itori, eweje, ilewo, and ilara in Ogun state!

U will see everything ranging from. Peeling machines, to washing, grinding, pressing and now the ones in pictures!

Some dnt make it into garri only..
Like d one in ifo dries into chips and pallets, ready to be bagged for importation. Some into flour for farmers who has govt LPO's to sell for flour mills!

So many people have been depending on these for their millions.

i av also finished my research abt this and i am starting my farm next year. My proposal is alwys ready.

The state govt of Ogun state has institutions across the states which large h
ectares of land to be available for just 2hectares to a farmer!

My point?
This is not oil revenue! Not every state looks up to that!
please can you tell me about the peeling machine I have searched everywhere for a efficient cassava peeler
