People do NYSC because otherwise they would be ineligible for employment by government (required), or private sector (voluntarily enforced).

If you plan for self-employment, are already are self-made, or have more assets than most people would acquire in a lifetime, why waste a year being unproductive in some far flung place? NYSC has really become a waste of time, talent, and resources. It has laudable goals, but I think it should be scrapped.
