Nigerian rebels threaten FIFA junior World Cup LAGOS (AFP) — Armed militants in Nigeria's Niger Delta on Monday claimed more attacks against facilities run by US oil giant Chevron and warned FIFA against letting the country host the under-17 World Cup tournament. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) in an email statement also threatened to extend its operations beyond Delta State to others in the oil-rich southern region. MEND said they had started a massive fire that destroyed the Abiteye flow station and blew up two other Chevron facilities there early on Monday. "Hurricane Piper Alpha hit the Abiteye flowstation operated by Chevron today, which resulted in a massive fire outbreak that is consuming the entire facility," it said in the statement. MEND vowed to move "into the neighbouring states of Bayelsa and Rivers before passing through the remaining states of Ondo, Edo, and Akwa Ibom then finally head off-shore." The group also took "this opportunity to advise FIFA to have a re-think about Nigeria hosting the under-17 World Cup tournament at this time, as the safety of international players and visitors cannot be guaranteed due to the current unrest." The tournament is due to run from October 24 to November 15, and Nigeria has scheduled some matches to be played in the restive region. Before the latest attacks, Nigerian authorities assured FIFA of security during the competition. The MEND statement also urged people from the Niger Delta region living in northern Nigeria to return home within the next eight weeks. MEND said it was issuing the warning "because a major event will occur in that part of the country and reprisal attacks directed at them cannot be ruled out." It gave the same advice to northern Nigerians living in the Niger Delta. While the north of Nigeria is predominantly Muslim, the south is mainly Christian. The spokesman of the special military unit in the area, Colonel Rabe Abubakar, downplayed the MEND attack saying only that there was "a serious exchange" of fire between the militants and troops, but that only Chevron could speak on its facility. "There was a serious exchange of fire between our troops and them at the flowstation. We were able to chase them away. They fled and there was no casualty on our side. We are waiting for the company has to speak about their facility," he said. Chevron did not confirm or deny the latest attack, but said investigations were under way. Chevron is "not speculating on any comment while investigations are being undertaken," a company spokesman, Scott Walker, said in a statement to AFP. Monday's operations were the latest in a series of MEND attacks on Niger Delta facilities run by the US oil giant designed to demonstrate that a recent government crackdown in the region has had no effect on its ability to operate. One attack in May cost Chevron 100,000 barrels a day in lost production. MEND, which says it is fighting for a fairer distribution of oil wealth to local people, said it would keep up its operations until oil production in the country had been brought to a halt. "We hope that by the time the oil and gas exports come to zero, Nigeria will maintain those positions from the export of groundnut oil," it said. Since 2006, MEND has been sabotaging oil industry infrastructure and abducting oil workers, to the extent that it has seriously disrupted Nigeria's oil production. MEND announced last June 7 the launch of what it called an "oil war" after several weeks of clashes with troops who promised to rid the militants of the region. Overall, the unrest has caused oil production -- Nigeria's main export -- to fall by nearly a third, from 2.6 million barrels a day in 2006 to 1.8 million currently. Nigeria derives more than 95 percent of its foreign exchange earnings from crude production in the Niger Delta region, according to official figures. |

A Kenyan fan of English football club Arsenal has hanged himself after his team's defeat by Manchester United. The north London club was beaten 3-1 in the European Champions League semi-final second leg on Tuesday evening. Suleiman Omondi, 29, who was watching in a bar in the capital, Nairobi, was incensed by the club's poor showing. He left at half-time after arguing with a Manchester United fan and was found hanging from a rope in his house, still dressed in an Arsenal shirt. 'Broke down' The BBC's Josphat Makori in Nairobi says the unprecedented incident has shocked football fans in Kenya. According to his friends, Mr Omondi was in good spirits at the beginning of the match and even when Arsenal conceded the first goal, he did not seem to be affected. He was so angry that he left in a rage Eyewitness But things changed when the team conceded a second goal 11 minutes into the game. A woman, who sat next to him in the bar, said Mr Omondi was so disappointed by Arsenal's poor performance that he broke down during half-time. Another eyewitness told journalists that it was at this point that a Manchester United fan started taunting him. "Suleiman got hold of him angrily by the neck and started pressing him so hard," he said. "We quickly intervened and asked him to stop. Suleiman then stopped but he was so angry that he left in a rage." His body was found on Wednesday morning. Police officer David Bunei told the BBC the incident was being investigated. www. bbc .co.uk shuoo na wa ooo wetin football dey cus no be small thing oo ![]() |
For the inhabitants of Tarkwa Bay Island, Lagos, the year 2009 will remain indelible in their hearts. In just three months, the island has changed in status, and for good. Indeed, even in their wildest imagination, the residents of the island may not have thought that life would be sweet. They never imagined that the once despised beach would become a beautiful bride overnight and its attractions irresistible to the prying public. As early as January, the Lagos State government, working through the Ministry of Tourism and Inter-governmental Relations, hatched a plan to make Tarkwa Bay beach a top tourism centre. This is one way of promoting sustainable domestic tourism in the state. Speaking on the choice of Tarkwa Bay, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, said the carnival was packaged to sensitize the public on the need to explore the beaches for leisure activities. He spoke of government’s resolve to make domestic tourism sustainable through beach carnivals. According to him, the state is endowed with unique sandy beaches, a long coastline dotted with tall coconut trees and spectacular ambience waiting to be discovered by the people in Lagos. Tarkwa Bay, he said, was chosen against this backdrop. It is towards this goal that the recent Easter carnival was staged on Tarkwa Bay Island. Many known and upcoming Nigerian artistes performed at the carnival. Transport facilities were provided at various points, including the CMS jetty, in Marina, Tarzan jetty, at Maroko; Ambico yard jetty and the Mekwuen jetty. All boats and vessels used met approved international safety guidelines. These boats include four newly acquired ones fully equipped and luxuriously furnished. They are owned by Fiki Marine and Boat Club. Sea patrol and rescue boats were also deployed as back-up, while every passenger had a life jacket. Policemen and security operatives provided adequate security for the day. Mobile toilets were ferried to the beach and equipment for the stage were moved in by Z-Mirage, ahead of the real day. Food vendors, palmwine sellers, fish mongers, soft drink hawkers and their ilk besieged the island with their wares. Despite the early morning drizzle, which delayed the programme till about noon, the star appearances of some of Nigeria’s most celebrated entertainment stars electrified the venue and sent the crowd dancing till the evening. Those who came were Kenny St. Brown, Muma Gee, Lord of Ajasa, King Nil (Togo), Zaki, Idris Abdul Karim, and Tee Mac. Others were Sheyman & Dr. Pat, Essence, Jazzman Olofin 2Phat, Lt Shotgun, Danny Young Lanre Atorise and others. Comedians led by MC Basket Mouth were there to add flavour to the concept. Side attractions, like masquerades, boat regatta, cultural shows and comedians spiced up the event and created an atmosphere of conviviality. It was actually an opportunity for music and artistic talent-hunting, as there were competitions in various areas, with encouraging cash and product prizes. The banks’ connection. Banks were not left out. Sterling Bank and Eco Bank mounted their stands and offered prospective clients a range of products to choose from. On offer were gift items and branded items. Clients were given the chance to open accounts, with as low as N1,000, as a way of making the facility available at the grassroots. As a coconut island, guests had a field day while the carnival lasted. The islanders had stands where freshly plucked coconuts were cut open and the liquid content offered to visitors to enjoy. Apart from eating and drinking, people indulged in other things. There was open water swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, diving, jet skiing, boating, surfing, wake boarding, fishing, beach soccer, yacht sailing, and quad biking etc. The boat regatta featured about 12 well-decorated canoes and a handful of swimmers. At intervals, these young acrobats jumped into the sea and performed various nerve-racking gymnastics. At the end, the carnival turned out to be an effective way to reposition Tarkwa Bay as a tourism destination of choice. Speaking at the venue, Senator Afikuyomi declared: “As you are aware, the Tarkwa Bay island has been in the news in recent times, but not for noble reasons. For decades now, Tarkwa Bay has been a tourist haven to scores of foreign and domestic tourists who every weekend and during holidays visit the island to spend some leisure time in the embrace of nature. Unknown to many Lagosians, Tarkwa Bay has been a destination where a number of activities often celebrated by the foreign media in other parts of the world take place. It has been a socially inclusive tourism island and a meeting point for members of different social classes. We need to celebrate this unique island.” Nice !!www.sunnewsonline.com |
FORMER coach of the Super Eagles, Clemens Westerhof, says that Nigeria's proposed friendly matches against Ireland and France ahead of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Tunisia will do the country no good. Instead, he told The Guardian in Ilorin on Tuesday that games against North African opponents would be better preparation for the qualifiers. Querying the choice of the European countries as Eagles' opponents in the run-up to the qualifiers, Westerhof asked: "Why do we need to play Ireland and France? Are we facing any European team in the qualifiers? The only team that stands on our way to the World Cup is Tunisia, which is a North African team. "I expected Nigeria to be playing nations likes Morocco, Algeria and other North African sides. By May 18, most of the European leagues will end and then what will the Eagles be doing till June 20." He added: "For now, nobody is talking about having a training camp for the team in any North African country before the June 20 game. I believe playing Ireland and France is a waste of time and money because apart from some officials benefiting from the games because of their estacode, Nigeria will gain nothing from the exercise. "If Nigeria does not make it to South Africa, nobody will take Nigeria serious again because at present, no team is afraid of facing Nigeria. Unlike during my time when confronting the Eagles was the beginning of wisdom, we are no more referred to as giant of Africa." Westerhof believes that the June 20 game in Tunis against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia holds the key to Nigeria's qualification for the World Cup. The Dutchman is so worried by the Eagles' current position in world football that he has vowed to return to his home country if Nigeria failed to make it to South Africa 2010. According to him, "if Nigeria doesn't make it to South Africa, I don't know what I will be doing during that period, so I would have to go back to Holland. "Nigeria's failure to qualify for the World Cup means I have no life in the country any more. So, I will have to sell my life here and relocate finally to Holland. Everybody is talking about Tunisia having edged out Nigeria from the race, but I want to say that the main decider for the Super Eagles is the game on June 20 in Tunis. I believe that is the match that will decide Nigeria's fate. "If we lose the match in Tunis, I think that is the end of Nigeria's World Cup bid. For me, I don't see Kenya as a big threat because with the quality of players that Nigeria has, I don't see the Kenyans not losing 0-3 in Abuja." Westerhof counseled the coaches to pay more attention to the domestic league, stating that there are players that could make the team stronger than it is now. He lamented: "It is unfortunate that the coaches don't even search the league for players. This is also part of the problem bedeviling the team as the focus is on foreign players when most of these foreign players do not even get playing time in their various clubs. "I am happy that a player like Chibuzor Okoronkwo has been called up to the team because this will surely increase the morale of the local players, knowing fully that since one of them is part of the senior team, if they played well they would get their own chance." |
