The Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation have officially ratified the selection of Samson Siasia to be the head coach of the Flying Eagles. He will replace Ladan Bosso, whose dismissal was also ratified at a meeting of the NFF's Technical Committee in Abuja on Thursday. However, the appointment will have to be confirmed by the board of the NFF which meets on March 17, before an official announcement can be made. Overwhelming public opinion against the retention of Bosso, who could only manage a bronze medal at the African Youth Championships early this year, left the NFF with little choice but to fire him, with Siasia installed as the runaway favourite for the post. Bosso's assistants, including ex international Ben Iroha, were also shown the door. Siasia is expected to lead the team to the World Youth Championships, with the entire nation expecting him to repeat, or even surpass his 2005 silver-winning performance. The Olympic silver-winning coach has been locked in negotiations with the FA in recent days, and his appointment was finally ratified by the Technical Committee at Thursday's meeting. http://www.kickoff.com/static/news/article.php?id=7211 |

Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola, speaking at an Economic Summit in Lagos, yesterday, said despite the calls for the ban of okada, the state would not ban their use as a means of public transport now because it is indispensable. “There is no alternative to okada business for now,’’ he said. He stated that when people are stranded at bus stops okada always proved a very useful means of conveying them to their destinations. “The state government is not thinking of banning okada now until the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme is fully operational in the state,’’ he said. While speaking on the light rail system, Fashola said the state has started work on two of the seven light rail projects, which would cost the state N5 billion. He also emphasized that people must seek approval before erecting their buildings, as the state government would not tolerate lawlessness. On the ongoing micro-water works in the state, Fashola disclosed that 12 micro-water projects are currently being executed across the state, adding that two of the micro-water projects would be completed by the middle of this month. The economic summit was attended by managing directors and chief executive officers of banks and other stakeholders in the economy of the state. www.onlinenigeria.com |

Alfie Patten: a father at the age of 13 Alfie's girlfriend Chantelle Steadman, 15, gave birth to Maisie Roxanne in Eastbourne Hospital, East Sussex, four days ago, reports The Sun. The boy, who is just 4ft and looks young for his age, told the newspaper: "I thought it would be good to have a baby." But he admitted he did not think about how he would afford it. "I don't really get pocket money. My dad sometimes gives me £10," he said. Alfie, who lives with his mother Nicola, 43, in Eastbourne, was 12 when Maisie was conceived. He could have shrugged his shoulders and sat at home on his Playstation. But he has been at the hospital every day. Dennis Patten, father of 13-year-old Alfie The pair, who have the support of their parents, kept the pregnancy secret until Chantelle's mother Penny noticed her daughter's swollen stomach. Alfie said: "When my mum found out, I thought I was going to get in trouble. We wanted to have the baby but were worried how people would react. "I didn't know what it would be like to be a dad. I will be good, though, and care for it." Alfie's father Dennis said his son wanted to be a devoted and responsible father, but did not fully appreciate what he had taken on by having a child. He said Alfie had wanted to be the first to hold his child. "He could have shrugged his shoulders and sat at home on his Playstation. But he has been at the hospital every day," he said. Chantelle and Maisie have been released from hospital and are living with her family in a council house in Eastbourne. Iain Duncan Smith is dismayed Reacting to the birth of Maisie Roxanne, former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith, head of the Conservatives' Centre for Social Justice think tank, said he was outraged. The case was a "tragic example" of Britain’s social decline, Mr Duncan Smith said later. "I don’t know about these particular families but too many dysfunctional families in Britain today have children growing up where anything goes. "It exemplifies the point we have been making about broken Britain," he added. "It's not being accusatory, it's about pointing out the complete collapse in some parts of society of any sense of what’s right and wrong. "There is no opprobrium any more about behaviour and quite often children witness behaviour that's aggressive, violent, rude and sexual. It’s as if no one is saying this is wrong." BBC Sport Fifa vice-president Jack Warner has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria's preparations for their hosting of October's Under-17 World Cup. Speaking at an event in Abuja to launch the official emblem, Warner said: "I have always had faith in Nigeria but at the moment that faith is not there." Warner is chairman of the organising committee for the tournament, and was not impressed after touring the facilities. "I cannot go back to Fifa and say yes, Nigeria is ready, because plenty still has to be done before we get to that stage. "Apart from Abuja, only the stadium in Ijebu Ode is ready and encouraging of the nine stadiums presented. "I feel pain, but even though I do not want to take away the joy of [the launch] tonight, I still have to be honest and face the truth. "And the truth is that you still have a long way to go, but I have always believed in Nigeria and I know you can do it." Warner did not say that the tournament will be taken away from Nigeria, but he made it clear that time is running out. "Hopefully when we return in March, things would have taken a better shape," he said. Warner is losing patience with Nigeria "But please, get started with the work at these stadiums and let us fulfil the promise of Africa hosting all three World Cups in 2009 and 2010." Last year Fifa expressed concerns over the progress of preparations, and in October, Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua decided that the country should pull out of hosting the event, until the budget was revised. At Monday's event, the country's Vice-President, Goodluck Jonathan, assured Fifa that there will be an improvement. "We know what is expected and we promise those things will be in place by the time you return, it is a promise," he said. "The importance of football to the Nigerian people cannot be undermined and that is the more reason we will ensure massive improvement." Nigeria lost the right to host the 1995 Under-20 World Cup, due to lack of facilities and medical concerns. But the country successfully hosted the tournament four years later, with Spain winning the trophy. With South Africa hosting the 2010 World Cup, the continent will also this year stage the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, and the Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria. hmmmmmmmmmm ![]() |

Mercy Akide-Udoh says she would be open to an approach from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) about the Super Falcons vacant coach's position. The former Nigeria striker, 33, is among the favourites to replace David Ladipo also known as Jossy Lad, who resigned on Monday. But the United States-based forward insists she will take the job only if certain conditions are met. "Right now I can say that I am interested in the job," the former African Footballer of the Year told BBC Sport. "I really want to help the Super Falcons but I have some demands that must be met by the NFF before I take the job. "If they really want me to do the job then we must sit down to discuss these conditions." Akide-Udoh, who has not been seen in a Super Falcons jersey since the 2004 Athens Olympics, says she will deliver the goods if she is given a free reign. "I want to bring in my philosophy that will fully benefit the team," the United States-based striker said. "To make these plans for the Super Falcons work, I need a long-term contract that will ensure we will not only build a team for today but the future too as well. "The key thing that I should be given the free hand to operate. I would not want people imposing players on me." The NFF is keen on rebuilding the Super Falcons after their failures at the the Beijing Olympics and African Women's Championship in Equatorial Guinea last month. Akide-Udoh is veteran of three World Cups and three African championships and she is the first African to play in the US Women's Soccer League (Wusa), before it folded in 2003. what do u guys think!! |
