AgricultureNigeria Is World’s Largest Producer Of Yam In FAO Ranking ― FG by BuhariCarryGo(op): 3:53pm On Nov 27, 2019
The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), has ranked Nigeria as one of the World’s largest producers of Yam with about 60 per cent of the Global production of the product, the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr Mohammed Bello has said.

Dr Bello, disclosed this in Abuja at the National Awareness Workshop on Yam, organized by the Advocacy and Resource Mobilization Team (ARMT) of Yam Improvement for Income and Food Security in West Africa (YIIFSWA), an initiative of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The Permanent Secretary who was represented by the Director of Agriculture in the Ministry, Engr Frank Satumari Kudla, noted that though Nigeria produces about 64 per cent of Yam in the world, it is not among the Comity of Yam Exporting Nations owing to lack of quality seeds of improved varieties and efficient seed production.

He said that (IITA) under it’s (YIIFSWA) programme saw the need to develop High Ratio multiplication technologies such as seed multiplication system that is sustainable and capable of producing high-quality yam seeds at an affordable price to Farmers with high yielding potentials.

The Permanent Secretary also pointed out that, the current practice in Yam Seed production is at a Ratio of 1.1 within 12 Months but that the new technology will produce a 1.300 Ratio within six Months.

In his remark, the Commissioner of Agriculture, Enugu State, Idu Mathew, who was represented by Director Technical Resources, Mr Onuze Benjamin, said that “every country that exports its raw commodity, exports it’s Labour and every other thing that is good to the country

The leadership of the Academic

directed its members nationwide

Office of the Accountant-General

ASUU on Sunday stated that the

union to develop a template that

same to him.
The union said the Federal
Government needs to test its
own model of ensuring financial

Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU

the enrollment of lecturers was
like taking universities back to

Ogunyemi insisted that its
members will not take part in the

that such steps by the Federal
Government would undermine
the autonomy of Nigerian
universities.
He said, “We have proposed to
the government that we have an

“The government needs to test
our own model rather than
buying into a model that will take

God bless Federal republic of Nigeria
No one is deceiving anybody, there has definately been an improvement in local rice production and it's a gradual process with the first and most important step being making sure local producers of rice are encouraged and what other better way can we get that done than making sure the careless inflow of foreign rice through our borders is put in check!
pls let appreciate what the customs are doing and support them to prevent smugglers reach their customers
CrimeCustoms Seizes N43m Smuggled Goods Within One Week In Kaduna by BuhariCarryGo(op): 8:47am On Nov 22, 2019
The Zone B of Nigeria Customs
Service Federal Operations Unit Kaduna, on Thursday said it seized smuggled goods valued at over N43 million within one week in the zone.
The Comptroller of the command, Mustafa Sarkin-Kebbi said among the items seized was a truck intercepted along Kebbi-Kalgo road carrying foreign parboiled rice concealed with footwears in one hundred kilogram bags.
Mr Sarkin-Kebbi, who made the disclosure at a press briefing in Kaduna, also said 25 vehicles were intercepted within the period, as well as 703 bags of smuggled foreign rice, 500 Jerry can of vegetable oil and 245 cartons of spaghetti.
Other were nine bails of second hand clothes, 40 Jerry Can of Kerosine and a truck of 30,000 PMS being discharged into Jerry Can across the boarders in Kebbi.
According to him, in spite of the Customs anti smuggling patrols across the zone and closing of Nigeria’s borders, smugglers are yet to desist from their illegal acts.
He assured that the Nigerian Custom Service especially the FOU zone B would not relax in its efforts to fight the smugglers to a standstill, to protect the nation’s economy.
“The policies of the Federal Government of self sufficiency in rice production must be sustained, and we can only sustain that if we stop these smugglers,” Mr Sarkin-Kebbi said.

PoliticsBuhari To Security Agencies: Improve On Response To Kidnapping, Bandit Attacks by BuhariCarryGo(op): 8:24am On Nov 22, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has called on security agencies and communities under threats of bandits’ attacks and kidnappings to be more vigilant and alert in the light of the latest incidents in Enugu, Zamfara, Adamawa, Katsina and Kaduna States.

In a statement on Thursday, Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, said Mr Buhari made the call while reacting to the recent reports of heightened acts of violence and kidnappings after a period of relative inactivity in the country.

Mr Buhari observed that, “in view of the unpredictability of the security situation, our security forces and the communities affected should be ever more alert because these murderous and remorseless criminals would take advantage of your complacency and strike again.”

According to him, “the bandits should under no circumstances be allowed to hold the country to ransom on account of security loopholes which they seek to exploit to strike at their victims.

“The criminals always look for loopholes in our security system in order to remain in business and active, but we shouldn’t give them the space to achieve this diabolical objective by pre-empting them.”

Mr Buhari added that “complacency is a hidden or unnoticed enemy that we shouldn’t take for granted, because doing so could weaken our strategies.”

The President, however, noted that the affected communities also have a responsibility to help the security agencies with the critically important human intelligence in order to stop the bandits in their tracks.

According to the President, “the bandits maintain networks of informants among the communities they attack”, adding that “by identifying and reporting these informants to the authorities, it would be by far easier to foil the bandits before they reach their intended targets.”

Commending the security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices, President Buhari directed them to “redouble their efforts and make life uncomfortable for the bandits.”

“You should spare no effort in breaking the backbone of these savage mass killers and don’t hesitate to attack them with merciless intensity until they are crushed and ultimately defeated”, the President said.

PoliticsProtest In Kano Over Court Ruling On New Emirates by BuhariCarryGo(op): 8:42pm On Nov 21, 2019
Some residents of Kano communities are currently embarking on a protest over Thursday’s court judgment.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Kano high court nullified the creation of four new first-class emirates by the state government.

The four new emirates for which Governor Abdullahi Ganduje named first-class emirs in May are Bichi, Rano, Karaye and Gaya.

Justice Usman Na’Abba ruled on Thursday that the law creating the new emirates did not follow due process.

After the judgement, scores of residents of Karaye, one of the affected areas, trooped out to protest the judgement.

A similar protest is ongoing in Gaya.
There are unconfirmed reports that similar protests were holding in other emirates.
In Karaye, the residents carried placards, whose contents were in Hausa, to show their grievances at the judgment.

“Leave us in our new emirate, the Karaye emirate,” one of the placards reads.
“The people of Karaye are in support of the new emirate,” another placard reads.

CrimeRe: N1.45trn Goods Smuggled Into Nigeria From Benin Republic Annually – Agency by BuhariCarryGo(op): 8:18pm On Nov 21, 2019
I think Nigeria government should capture Benin republic and add it to Nigeria after all Benin republic is too small to be a country #just 4 million people not even up to bayelsa state!
Let the border remain closed, we cannot be feeding the whole of West Africa and they continue to make jest of us as poverty capital.
CrimeN1.45trn Goods Smuggled Into Nigeria From Benin Republic Annually – Agency by BuhariCarryGo(op): 8:18pm On Nov 21, 2019
The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) says N1.45 trillion worth of goods are smuggled into Nigeria annually from Benin Republic.

The Acting Managing Director of NEPZA, David Nongo, said he sourced the data from the World Bank.

He said this at the Two-Day National Workshop on the Role of Maritime in the AfCFTA Agreement with the theme: ‘AfCFTA: Boosting Nigeria’s Economy for Sustainable Development.’

The workshop was organised by the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) in Lagos on Wednesday.

He lamented the menace of smuggling of goods through the Benin Republic corridor into Nigeria saying “it is of negative economic influence to the nation”.

According to the MD, who was represented at the event by Simon Tsuwan, “a recent World Bank report stated that about N1.45 trillion worth of goods are smuggled into Nigeria annually through the Benin border alone.”

“This prompted Africa’s foremost industrialist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote to lament that there is no country that can survive with Benin Republic as a neighbour.

“And he went further to call for drastic action so as to save the Nigerian economy. The President Buhari government has taken the bold decision of closing the land borders and although there have been protests from majority ECOWAS member states. Nigeria insists that the closure would remain in force till January 31st, 2019.”

Mr Nongo said the border closure would help to boost local manufacturing, job creation and economic growth by checking the smuggling of goods into the country.

He further stated that the closure would also help to increase Nigeria’s global competitiveness as well as attract investors.

He said the difficulty the authority would have had was ‘infrastructural deficits’ but added that the agency is already updating and providing infrastructure.

“We are deploying technologies and New Media to improve service delivery, digitalising our operations and simplifying procedures etc all in a bid to get the most from the AfCFTA,” he said.
