Politics / Nigerian Woman Breaks Guinness World Record With 55-hour Interview Marathon by BuhariCarryGo: 8:13am On Apr 25
Nigerian social media entrepreneur Clara Chizoba
Kronborg has broken the world record for the
longest interviewing marathon with a time of 55
hours 24 seconds.
The previous record was 37 hours 44 minutes by
Rob Oliver (USA) in 2022.
Clara, who hosts a talk show on YouTube,
interviewed 90 people of various nationalities and
occupations, including politicians, business
owners, content creators, actors, real estate agents
and many others, the Guinness World Records
revealed on Wednesday.
According to GWR, the conversations were centred
around how each guest achieved success in their
respective field.
It noted that Clara grew up in relative poverty in
Onitsha, Nigeria, which fuelled her fascination
with the concept of success.
Clara was quoted as saying: “This record attempt
was about bringing together diverse individuals,
sharing their inspiring narratives, and forging
meaningful connections on a global scale.
“I am committed to amplifying voices, particularly
those of hardworking women, and using their
stories to inspire others facing similar challenges.”
Clara’s record attempt took place on a docked
yacht in the Spanish city of Marbella, where she
currently lives.
In addition to the usually sunny harbour being
struck by a heavy rainstorm, Clara faced several
difficulties during her record attempt.
She says her voice became “very hoarse and
rusty” but she avoided losing it by drinking lots of
water.
A report by GWR said, “As with all ‘longest
marathon’ record attempts, Clara accrued five
minutes of rest time after each hour of
interviewing; only during these breaks was she
permitted to nap, change her clothes, or go to the
bathroom.
“So, to compensate for the large volume of water
she was consuming, Clara wore adult diapers
throughout her record attempt.”
“Even worse, my period started the same day, and
I was already having intense menstrual cramps,”
she revealed.
“At some point I was literally dripping pee and
period stain, but I persevered and kept my eyes on
the goal. To anyone who ever reads this, once you
find your purpose, go after it with everything
you’ve got.”
Clara also reportedly suffered neck and back
aches, which her team relieved with massages
during her rest breaks.
The report said she also struggled with sleepiness
at multiple points but according to her, she gained
a “battery recharge” every time she began
interviewing a new guest, as she was eager to hear
their story.
Enduring all the hardships was worth it for Clara,
who says it feels “surreal” to now hold this world
record.
“Recalling everything I went through physically,
mentally, financially, emotionally – it feels so
unreal,” she said.
“I am extremely proud of this accomplishment
because I know lives have been touched and
changed.
“This achievement is dedicated to all those who
dare to dream and persist, regardless of the
challenges they face.”
Clara’s achievement comes a few days after fellow
Nigerian, Tunde Onakoya, set a new Guinness
World Record for the longest marathon chess.

Politics / Price Fixing: FCCPC To Go After Informal Sector by BuhariCarryGo: 7:51am On Apr 25
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC) has vowed to go after players in the informal sector to guard against any form of extortion of consumers. The acting Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Alhaji Adamu Abdullahi, noted that recent interventions of the federal government through its various agencies, including FCCPC, had yielded results with reduction in the prices of commodities. He gave an instance with rice, which he said now sold below N60,000. Abdullahi, while featuring on NTA’s Good Morning Nigeria show monitored by our correspondent, said as the statutory agency of government in charge of protecting the rights of consumers, FCCPC covered all sectors of the economy.
He disclosed that the commission recently visited some markets across the country in an effort to compel marketers to bring down the prices of their food items. He also said that the commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lagos Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) to stop price fixing in major markets in the state. “All these efforts are already yielding results. Price of rice as of today has really come down. These are efforts made from all agencies, we cannot claim it is only from us. We know that the government has done a lot because the administration, despite the fact that it has removed subsidy, has also tried cushioning the effect of the subsidy. “We have seen the efforts that have been made also about the dollar rate and the fact that the dollar has now come down. “We now have the mouth and the will to go into supermarkets and markets too and talk about price and look at gouging. Gouging is when you use happenings in the market that normally should not affect prices. We go into those supermarkets, find out from their records the day they bought those goods and what was the foreign exchange? Why are you selling at that rate?” Adamu stated that the recent visit to supermarkets failing to comply with the directive to display price tags was in line with its commitment to ensure consumers are not short- changed. “You check an item and by the time you go to the counter to pay, the price on the shelf is different from what is on the system. That is misleading. “Our Act empowers us to seal up a supermarket, warehouse, any store once we found out that there has been unwholesome practice which in this case we have confirmed. “All we are trying to do, we are not trying to stop anybody from doing business, we are trying to make amends.” https://dailytrust.com/price-fixing-fccpc-to-go-after-informal-sector/

Politics / ECOWAS Imposes No Flight Zone On Niger Republic by BuhariCarryGo: 3:17pm On Jul 30, 2023
In a swift response to military coup in Niger Republic, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has enforced a no-flight zone over the country.

The decision was announced today by the ECOWAS, at an urgent meeting following the increasing tension stirred by the military actors who are attempting to take over in Niger.

This significant move which includes air and land border closure, is seen as a crucial reaction to the recent ascendancy of the junta, which has stirred significant unrest in the country and poses a threat to political stability within the region.

The ECOWAS leadership believes that the imposition of a no-flight zone will help curb the junta’s influence and hinder any potential allies from providing aerial support, even as leaders of the coup fear that the regional body could stage an imminent military intervention in the capital of the Sahel country.

In addition to the no-flight zone, the regional body has agreed on immediate financial sanctions over the coup, and has given the junta a week to cede power, while noting that a use of force has not been ruled out.

ECOWAS also insisted that President Mohamed Bazoum remains recognized as president of Niger, and called upon member states and the international community to uphold and respect these decision, in an effort to help restore peace and stability in the republic.

Speaking at the emergency meeting which he presided over today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS denounced the coup by military leaders in Niger Republic, saying Africa has come of age.

Briefing leaders of the regional bloc, Tinubu registered the displeasure of ECOWAS at the coup d’état in the Niger Republic.

“Africa has come of age, we reject coup and interruption to constitutional order,” the Nigerian leader said amid applause.

“As African leaders, it is our sheer responsibility to foster stability and progress, placing the wellbeing of our people at the forefront of our endeavours.

“Working together towards their prosperity and happiness must always constantly be our goal and consistently, we will stand with our people in freedom and our commitment to the rule of law and not the barrel of gun.”

Politics / 24-hour Curfew In Adamawa As Youths Go On The Rampage, Loot Government Grain sto by BuhariCarryGo: 1:41pm On Jul 30, 2023
n what appears as a repeat of the fallout of the
#EndSARS protest of 2020, youths in Adamawa
are currently looting government-owned grain
reserves and other shops.
The youths reportedly started the looting spree at
the grain warehouse located at PZ Roundabout, a
stone's throw away from the Yola International
Airport.
SaharaReporters learnt that virtually all the grain
reserves on Numan Road and other strategic
locations are being looted.
Some of them have also started looting private
stores.
SaharaReporters can report that armed policemen
are currently engaging the youths as they attempt
to crack down on the rampage.
There are also reported cases of live bullets being
fired as the looting is said to have turned violent.
One of the looters who spoke to our correspondent
blamed the action on the hardship being
experienced in the country following the removal
of subsidy on premium motor spirit otherwise
known as petrol.
To manage the situation, Governor Ahmadu
Umaru Fintiri has declared a 24-hour curfew.
A statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the
governor, Himwashi Wonosikou said, "The
Governor of Adamawa State, the Rt Hon Ahmadu
Umaru Fintiri has declared a 24-hour curfew on
the state, effective immediately Sunday, 30th July,
2023.
"Governor Fintiri said the curfew followed the
dangerous dimension the activities of hoodlums
had assumed across the state capital as they
attack people with machetes and break into
business premises and homes, carting away
property.
"With the curfew imposed, there will be no
movement throughout the state.
"Rt. Hon. Fintiri said only those on essential duties
with valid identification would be permitted to
move around during the period of the curfew.
"The Governor is appealing to citizens and
residents of the state to comply with the directive,
adding that any person found contravening the
order would be arrested and made to face the
wrath of the law."

Politics / Ministerial List: Why Tinubu Delayed Kano Lagos, 9 Other States by BuhariCarryGo: 9:32am On Jul 28, 2023
Daily Trust reports that Tinubu who was inaugurated on May
29 had till today (Friday, July 28), to submit the list to the
Senate in line with section 42(a) of the constitution, which
states that “The nomination of any person to the office of a
minister for confirmation by the Senate shall be done within
sixty days after the date the president has taken the oath of
office”.
The delay by the president to unveil his cabinet had
heightened expectations from Nigerians, who were keenly
waiting for the list of ministers that would assist the
president to deliver his Renewed Hope Agenda.
Competent sources informed Daily Trust that high-wire
politics, technocracy, party politics and compensation were
among the key factors considered by the president in
coming up with the list
Those who made it to the released list included four former
governors: David Umahi (Ebonyi); Nyesom Wike (Rivers);
Mohammed Badaru (Jigawa), and Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna).
Other nominees are: Abubakar Momoh (Edo State); Yusuf
Maitama Tuggar (Bauchi); Ahmad Dangiwa (Katsina);
Hannatu Musawa (Katsina); Uche Nnaji (Enugu); Betta Edu
(Cross River); Doris Uzoka (Imo); Ekperikpe Ekpo (Akwa
Ibom), Nkiru Onyejiocha (Abia), Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ( Ondo),
Stella Okotete (Delta), Uju Ohaneye (Anambra), Bello
Mohammed Goronyo (Sokoto), Alake (Ekiti), Lateef
Fagbemi (Kwara), Mohammed Idris (Niger), Edun (Ogun),
Adebayo Adelabu (Oyo), Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim
(Nasarawa), Pate (Bauchi), Joseph Utsev (Benue),
Abubakar Kyari (Borno), John Enoh (Cross River), and Sani
Abubakar Danladi (Taraba).
Why Tinubu omitted Kano, Lagos, others
Daily Trust checks revealed that the omission of Kano State
in the 28-man list of ministerial nominees submitted to the
National Assembly on Thursday by the president may not
be unconnected to the uncertainty surrounding the former
governor of the state, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who it was
gathered is the president’s favourite candidate from the
North-West state.
It was also gathered that the post-election romance
between the president and presidential candidate of NNPP,
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the resignation of the APC
national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, which now creates a
vacuum, are factors believed to be responsible for the non-
inclusion of Kano in the released ministerial list.
Days after Adamu resigned, it was gathered that the
president was said to have tipped Ganduje to succeed him,
which many believe might be the reason for his absence in
the ministerial list forwarded to the National Assembly.
A chieftain of the party in Kano had told Daily Trust last
week that they had been informed that the former governor
did not make the ministerial list.
He said what they were told was that Ganduje would be
given the opportunity to fill in the vacant position of the
ruling party’s chairmanship.
“For us, this is even better news because as the party
chairman, Baba (Ganduje) will be directly involved with not
just the party but also maintain his cordial relationship with
the president,” he said.
The permutations among party leaders in the state had
however been zeroed on the fears that the recent overtures
from the president to Kwankwaso, a former governor of the
state, whose party now controls the state, might affect the
slot(s) to be given to the state, with several of them
insisting that this would negatively affect the party and
would aggravate the discord in the state with the
superiority battle that might follow. A source said beyond
the ministerial position, Tinubu was also considering
electoral value ahead of 2027.
“There is also the issue of the election petition tribunal.
Tinubu wants strong personalities in the states, not just
Kano, so that if there would be a rerun, they would deliver
votes for him.”
The vice chairman of the APC in the state, Shehu Maigari
told Daily Trust that the state has strong personalities that
contributed immensely to the emergence of Tinubu as
president.
“We have people like Ahmed Tijjani Gwarzo, a former
deputy governor of the state who has been with Asiwaju
since their days in ACN and who I can boldly say apart
from our leader (Ganduje), no one else contributed more to
the success than him. We also have Rabiu Suleiman Bichi,
a former Secretary to the State Government, and also
Abdulrahman Dambazau, former Minister of Interior. These
are just a few among qualified persons that should be
considered,” he said.
Working to harmonise interests in Lagos
In Lagos, Daily Trust learnt that political struggles and the
need to harmonise interests prevented it from being
represented in the 28-member ministerial list even though
Lagos-based politicians were well-represented.
Both Dele Alake and Wale Edun have their political base in
Lagos and are known foot soldiers of Tinubu, who served in
his cabinet when he was the governor of the state.
However, there are rumours that Tinubu, who has
maintained a stronghold of the state since he became
governor in 1999, is considering his former Chief of Staff,
Babatunde Fashola; Lagos East Senator, Tokunbo Abiru and
former Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode as
potential nominees from the state. The National Youth
leader of the party, Dayo Israel is also said to be eyeing a
ministerial slot.
Similarly, it was learnt that Tinubu is yet to settle for
anybody in Bayelsa, owing to the struggle in the state.
Political gladiators in the state are said to be scheming for
the exalted position.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, recently, denied any
involvement in nominating a ministerial nominee from the
state.
While Cross River had two nominees- APC national woman
leader, Dr. Betty Edu, and Senator John Owan-Eno, the
omission of the former governor, Ben Ayade is said to be
unsettling politicians in the state.
Slot between Lawan, Machina in Yobe
In Yobe, our correspondent gathered the names of former
Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Bashir Sheriff Machina
are being mentioned.
While Lawan had lost out to Tinubu during the primary
election of the APC, he also had a legal battle with Machina
over the Yobe North senatorial seat ticket.
We’ll certainly have our preferred choice – Kebbi
Elsewhere, officials in Kebbi State said they were certain
the best would be chosen as minister to represent them.
The Special Adviser to Governor Nasiru Idris on Political
Affairs, Alhaji Kabiru Sani Giant said Kebbi had contributed
immensely to the success of Mr. President in the
presidential election.
“He will surely appoint a minister from Kebbi State like he
has done in other states but is yet to exhaust his list”, he
said.
On whether the face-off between Senator Adamu Aliero
and former governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu might be
responsible for why there is no ministerial nominee yet
from Kebbi, Alhaji Giant said Aliero has no power to stop or
influence the president on the choice of who is to be
appointed as minister in Kebbi State. Before now, two
former governors of the state, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu and
Sa’idu Nasamu Dakingari were being touted for the
ministerial position in the state.
It was believed that Bagudu by virtue of his position as
former APC Governors Forum and being the chairman of
the convention where Tinubu emerged the APC presidential
flag bearer has a better chance without prejudice to
Dakingari who was the director general for the governorship
campaign in the state.
Daily Trust gathered that unresolved permutations resulted
in a delay in announcing a ministerial nominee from
Gombe State by President Tinubu.
Last minute politics ‘robbed’ Gombe in first list
A chieftain of the APC in the state, who craves anonymity,
said President Tinubu had earlier settled for his associate,
a Kaduna-based businessman, Alhaji Umar Abdullahi.
According to him, Abdullahi, popularly known as ‘Umaru
Dan Adda,’ is a long-time associate of the president and
participated in the 2023 presidential campaign that brought
Tinubu to power.
He was a one-time staff of the New Nigeria Development
Company (NNDC) and served as board member for several
parastatals after his retirement.
However, another contender for the ministerial seat,
Abubakar Inuwa Kari, the immediate past Chief of Staff to
Governor Inuwa Yahaya and ally to President Tinubu, also
pushed harder for the seat.
He was one of the returning officers of Tinubu during the
APC’s Presidential election. He was not reappointed as
chief of staff by Governor Yahaya in anticipation of his likely
nomination as a ministerial nominee.
Also, a heavy-weight politician, Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna
was contending to get the ministerial slot for Gombe to
represent the state at the Federal Executive Council.
Gwamna was a gubernatorial aspirant under the PDP, but
returned to APC, after he lost the party’s ticket and
contributed immensely towards the victory of the party.
According to the source, the failure to reconcile and pick
one from the three contenders made it impossible for a
ministerial nominee from the state to be in the first batch
unveiled by Senate President Godswill Akpabio yesterday.
In Plateau, pundits have expressed surprise that immediate
past governor, Simon Lalong, was not named among the
list. They were equally surprised that Plateau was excluded
from the first list even though Lalong served as Tinubu’s
Presidential Campaign Director General.
Daily Trust gathered that the state had earlier submitted
three names, including Lalong, the current APC chairman in
the state, Rufus Bature and Prof. Dakas C. Dakas. But
pundits say the non-inclusion of Plateau on the list may not
be unconnected with the pending suit instituted by Lalong
and the APC.
Senate to commence screening Monday – Spokesperson
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and
Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti) said
the screening of the ministerial nominees will commence
on Monday.
Briefing journalists after yesterday’s plenary, Adaramodu
assured that the nominees would be thoroughly grilled.
He said, “This time around, the Senate will examine the
character, background and achievement of all nominees,
and Nigerians will not be disappointed with the 10th
Senate.
“It is until they come forward with their resume because it
won’t be a shadow screening where you have a good
resume and you don’t have a good character. They must
have good character,” he said.

Politics / Northern Petrol Marketers To Embark On Strike Over N250bn Unpaid Subsidy by BuhariCarryGo: 9:22am On Jul 28, 2023
The Northern Independent Petroleum Marketers Forum said its members would embark on a strike if the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) fails to pay them over N250 billion outstanding bridging claims.

The chairperson of the forum, Musa Maikifi, in a press conference on Thursday in Kano, said the forum’s members are being owed over N250 billion bridging claims.

Mr Maikifi said the bridging claims represent the cost of transporting fuel from pipelines and product marketing company depots to approved zones to ensure a uniform pump price across the country.

The forum comprises nine depots in the north of the country – Kano, Kaduna, Suleja, Minna, Jos, Maiduguri, Gombe and Yola depots.

He said the delay in paying them was threatening their businesses as some of their members could not afford to supply petroleum and sell it at various outlets.

According to the forum, the money, if paid, would be utilised by their members to sustain their business.

Mr Maikifi said the failure of the government to pay the amount on time would affect the transportation of the fuel to the entire northern states.

Also speaking at the event, the secretary of the forum, Jarma Mustapha, said there were other outstanding bridging claims since the defunct Petroleum Equalization Fund that have still not been paid.

“We have outstanding bridging claims up to the day when the end of the deregulation was announced by the new President (Bola Tinubu).

“As the new deregulation regime started now, we are faced with difficulties such as lack of capacity and lack of capital to continue our business because most of our capital was hanged with the defunct Petroleum Equalization Fund.

We are now calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene so that the whole of our outstanding claims, up to the 30th May 2023, when the new deregulation was announced, should be paid for our members to continue getting enough capital to continue being in business.

Almost all of our members are going out of business. Based on that, we are appealing to the President to intervene, talk to the authorities concerned to immediately pay all our outstanding claims,” Mustapha appealed.

“The money used to pay for the bridging claims is the one contributed by the consumers, which is collected by the marketers, pay to NNPC, NNPC collects and pays into the collective fund of the Equalization Fund.

“That money is not budgeted, which is financed by the government. It is financed by the consumers through the marketers, basically to equalise prices across the country,” Mr Mustapha said.

Politics / Women Seek 35% Female Ministerial Appointment by BuhariCarryGo: 5:51pm On Jul 20, 2023
The Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to deliver on his campaign action plan of having at least 35 per cent of women on his ministerial list. Its Chief Executive Officer, Mufuliat Fijabi, made the call during a zoom media conference organised by Women Radio 91.7. Fijabi expressed concerns over the President’s recent appointment of special assistants and personal aides where only 25 per cent and 15 per cent of women were appointed respectively. According to her, other African countries have made considerable progress in women representation. She, however, called on the new administration to uphold the 35 per cent affirmative action. Also, Amina Agbaje, National President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), explained the need for gender equity and transparency in the president’s list. Agbaje urged women groups to send a delegation to the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, to lobby for the consideration of the 35 per cent quota system for women on the ministerial list. Ladi Bala, National President of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), emphasised that media engagements were critical to keeping the advocacy for 35 per cent affirmative action for women to garner the attention it deserves. Adewummi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip, House of Representatives, expressed her confidence in Tinubu to deliver on his promises. Similarly, Jamila Babuba, APC Professional Women North East Coordinator, expressed assurance that the president would appoint at least 35 per cent women in his cabinet. Chikas Kumle, a social justice advocate, highlighted the critical role of women in an inclusive government, urging President Tinubu to include at least 35 per cent of APC women on his ministerial list. Zainab Abdulrasheed, Programmes Officer, Women’s Rights Advancement & Protection Alternative (WRAPA Nigeria), highlighted the importance of inclusive advocacy on behalf of marginalised and excluded voices in implementing the 35 per cent affirmative action to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Saka Azimazi, former Deputy Director, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), called for grassroots advocacy and male support to achieve affirmative action for women at all levels of government. Enebi Opaluwa, Senior Research and Policy Analyst BudgIT, decried the absence of women in policy-making processes in Nigeria. The APC campaign action plan for a better Nigeria gave assurances to increase women’s participation to at least 35 per cent in all government positions. No government since the Fourth Republic has achieved the appointment of 35 per cent women as ministers. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

During his reign, Nagona operated on the eastern part Sokoto, especially in villages of Isa and Sabon Birni local governments.

Politics / Wike Threatens To Cancel Atiku’s Campaign Venue In Rivers by BuhariCarryGo: 7:43am On Jan 21, 2023
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has threatened to
cancel the approval for the use of Adokiye Amiesimaka
Stadium in Port Harcourt for the campaign of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku
Abubakar.
Wike said the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign
Council (PCC) in the state, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, had been
accessing the venue a month before the February 11 date
The governor explained that the approval, which was granted
at no cost to the PCC, stated that the stadium wod be
accessible to the council 48 hours to the rally.
Wike, who disclosed these on Friday while speaking at the
campaign flag-off rally of the Rivers State PDP Campaign
Council in Oyigbo Local Government Area, said Sekibo has no
right to take possession of the stadium one month before the
date of the stipulated event.
New NDDC Board Won’t Disappoint Niger Deltans – Minister
Sowore: Tinubu slept at presidential candidates meeting, didn’t say a
word
Wike warned Sekibo not to provoke the Rivers State
government by desperately wanting to take possession of the
state-owned stadium weeks to the campaign, or else the
approval would be cancelled.
He said, “Let me also use this opportunity to warn Abiye
Sekibo, we have made approval for your presidential
candidate to use Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, February 11th,
you have no right to begin to go to the stadium now. We
cannot give you access to the stadium now. We can only give
you access to the stadium two days to the occasion for you to
prepare.
“Nobody gave you one month. So, if you dare it again, to go
and force yourself into the stadium, I will cancel the approval
with immediate effect. Dare it again, I will cancel it. Heaven
will not fall. In fact, if heaven falls now, we will be happy that it
was in our time heaven came down.
“I know you are not ready to do that rally. You are only looking
for excuse. But you must do it. I know you are going to import
people, no problems, go and import. We have given you the
stadium.”
Governor Wike also took a swipe at the All Progressives
Congress (APC) in Rivers State for blaming the crisis that
greeted the campaign of its governorship candidate in Mile
one Diobu, Port Harcourt on Thursday.
The governor stressed that APC became a victim to the
brewing crisis between the two factions in Rumuwoji
community because they did not address its demand
adequately.
Governor Wike wondered why APC did not encounter crisis
with their rallies when they used the Tipper Park in Etche
Local Government and the IYM secretariat in Ikwerre LGA.
The governor asked the opposition party in the state to stop
complaining if it was not ready for the forthcoming general
elections, saying the PDP in the state was fully prepared.

Politics / At Least 174 Dead After Crowd Crush At Indonesian Football Match (photos) by BuhariCarryGo: 8:50am On Oct 02, 2022
At least 174 people died and hundreds were injured in
violence and a crowd crush after an Indonesian league
football match, the deputy east Java governor has said.
Supporters of the Javanese clubs and longtime rivals
Arema and Persebaya Surabaya clashed after Arema
were defeated 3-2 at the match in Malang Regency,
East Java.
Supporters from the losing side invaded the pitch and
authorities fired teargas, leading to a crush and cases
of suffocation, said East Java’s police chief, Nico
Afinta.
Thirty-four people died in the Kanjuruhan stadium and
the rest while in hospital, and hundreds were injured,
he said. Two police officers were among the dead.
Many people were crushed and suffocated when they
ran to one exit, Afinta said.
“They went out to one point at the exit, then there was
a buildup – in the process of accumulation there was
shortness of breath, lack of oxygen.”
A police spokesperson later put the death toll at 129 in
one of the world’s deadliest sporting stadium disasters.
A hospital director told local TV that one victim was
aged five.
Indonesia’s chief security minister, Mahfud MD, said
the number of spectators exceeded the capacity of the
Kanjuruhan stadium.
He said in an Instagram post on Sunday that 42,000
tickets had been issued for a stadium that had a
capacity to hold 38,000 people.
The head of the Malang Regency health office, Wiyanto
Wijoyo, said earlier that officials were still collating the
numbers of injured.

Victims “died of chaos, overcrowding, trampling and
suffocation”, Wiyanto said, adding that the injured
were referred to different local hospitals.
Fighting reportedly started when the thousands of
Arema fans rushed on to the field. Persebaya players
immediately left it but several Arema players still on
the field were also attacked.
Local reports said up to 3,000 spectators had taken to
the field, out of a crowd of 40,000. Police said 13
vehicles were damaged, including 10 police cars.
Images captured from inside the stadium showed huge
amounts of teargas and people clambering over fences.
People were carrying injured spectators through the
chaos.
Video footage circulating on social media showed
people shouting obscenities at police, who were
holding riot shields.
Torched vehicles, including a police truck, littered the
streets outside the stadium on Sunday morning.
A group of people carry a man in the stadium during the melee.

The Indonesian government apologised for the disaster
and promised to investigate its circumstances.
“We’re sorry for this incident ... this is a regrettable
incident that ‘injures’ our football at a time when
supporters can watch football matches from the
stadium,” the Indonesian sports and youth minister,
Zainudin Amali, told broadcaster Kompas.
“We will thoroughly evaluate the organisation of the
match and the attendance of supporters. Will we
return to banning supporters from attending the
matches? That is what we will discuss.”
Fan violence is an enduring problem in Indonesia,
where deep rivalries have previously turned into
deadly confrontations.

Nairaland / General / Ukraine War: Occupied Areas Call Urgent Vote To Join Russia by BuhariCarryGo: 7:24pm On Sep 20, 2022
Four areas of Ukraine under Moscow's control have announced plans for urgent so-called referendums on joining Russia, which would pave the way for Russian annexation. Russia's invasion has stalled in recent months and Ukraine has recaptured swathes of territory in the north-east. Now Russian-backed officials in the east and south say they want votes on joining Russia starting this week. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, after a vote drew international condemnation. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Tuesday that "sham 'referendums' will not change anything". The international community has never recognised the Crimea annexation, but it has long been clear that Russia intends to rubber- stamp its takeover of other occupied regions in the same way. Annexing more Ukrainian territory would enable the Kremlin to claim Russia itself was coming under attack from Nato weapons. Russia launched its invasion on 24 February. There is speculation that Russia may announce a mass mobilisation, to beef up its forces in Ukraine. The Russian parliament has approved tougher punishments for crimes such as desertion, damage to military property and insubordination during mobilisation or combat operations. The deputy head of Russia's Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, said early on Tuesday that holding votes in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk - also known as Donbas - would correct "historical justice" and be irreversible: "After the amendments to the constitution of our state, no future leader of Russia, no official, will be able to reverse these decisions." Soon afterwards the two breakaway Russian-backed authorities in Donetsk and Luhansk said they would stage votes on 23-27 September. They were both recognised as independent by President Vladimir Putin three days before Russian troops invaded Ukraine from north, east and south. Russian-installed officials in the southern region of Kherson said they would also hold a vote, and a similar declaration came from Russian- occupied areas of Zaporizhzhia. Russian state media said people would be able to vote in person or remotely. For months, Russian-installed authorities have tried to hold self- styled referendums. There was never any hope of a free or fair vote, and the continuing war has made it impractical even to try to annex areas not fully under their control. Ukraine's counter-offensives have made that harder still. While most of Luhansk has been in Russian hands since July, on Monday the Ukrainian leader in Luhansk announced that the army had recaptured the village of Bilohorivka. Much of Donetsk remains under Ukrainian control, although Russia has seized the coastal strip along the Sea of Azov. Although Russian forces quickly captured Kherson at the start of the war, Ukrainian forces have regained some territory and Russian- installed authorities have faced repeated attacks. Earlier attempts to hold a vote there were postponed. Much of Zaporizhzhia is still under Ukrainian control, including the regional capital of the same name. Even though the 2014 vote in Crimea was widely rejected as illegal, and boycotted by a large number of residents, Russia's military were in control of the peninsula. Ukrainian forces are not far away from the city of Donetsk and on Monday the Russian-backed mayor accused them of shelling the city, killing at least 13 people. Who is winning the war in Ukraine? Sri Lankans freed from Russian brutality in Ukraine In depth: Russia's war in Ukraine Any attempt to further annex sovereign Ukrainian territory is bound to infuriate leaders in Kyiv and destroy any hope of a negotiated solution. Ukrainian defence ministry adviser Oleksiy Kopytko suggested the vote plan was a "sign of hysteria" in Moscow. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday night "the occupiers are clearly in a panic". German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the votes were a "sham", while France's Emmanuel Macron condemned the idea as "cynical" and a "parody" that would obviously not be recognised by the international community. Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said they had no legitimacy and were "a further escalation in Putin's war". Respected Russia analyst Tatiana Stanovaya saw the latest move as an "unequivocal ultimatum" from Russia to Ukraine and the West. She said that if they did not react appropriately Russia would fully mobilise its armed forces for war. Annexation would give President Putin the right, as he saw it, to use any weapons to protected territory deemed by Moscow to be Russian. There have been growing calls from some quarters in Russia for full mobilisation of the armed forces. President Putin still describes the invasion as a "special military operation". In a sign that the Kremlin was preparing to back the referendums, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that from the start of the operation Russia had wanted residents to have the decision: "The whole current situation confirms that they want to be masters of their fate."

Foreign Affairs / South Africans Demand Return Of ‘world’s Largest Diamond’ On Queen’s Sceptre by BuhariCarryGo: 11:33am On Sep 17, 2022
South Africans are demanding the world’s largest
known clear-cut diamond on the late Queen Elizabeth’s
sceptre following her death.
The Great Star of Africa or Cullinan l is the largest
known clear-cut diamond in the world which was
mined in South Africa in 1905 and was given to the
British Royal Family as a gift.
It was given to the royal family when South Africa was
under British rule, Metro News reports.

Recall that some Africans expressed contempt when
the Queen died over her alleged role in the
colonisation of the African continent.
This has led to the growing calls in South Africa for
the diamond to be returned as they believe it belongs
to them.
In South Africa, there has been a debate in the media
about who owns the Great Star of Africa as well as
other precious stones that were mined in the country.
One of the views held in the country was that of the
African Transformation Movement (ATM) Member of
Parliament (MP) Vuyo Zungula who holds that South
Africa should cut its Commonwealth ties and have a
new constitution.
“SA should now leave the Commonwealth, demand
reparations for all the harm done by Britain, draft a
new constitution based on the will of the people of SA
not the British Magna Carta, and demand the return of
all the gold, diamonds stolen by Britain” he said, via
timeslive.co.za.
Similarly former African National Congress (ANC)
KwaZulu-Natal provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo
said: “The minerals of our country and other countries
continue to benefit Britain at the expense of our
people.
“We remain in deep, shameful poverty, we remain
with mass unemployment and rising levels of crime
due to the oppression and devastation caused by her
and her forefathers. The Cullinan Diamond must be
returned to SA with immediate effect.”
The report reveals that more than 6,000 people have
signed a petition calling for the Great Star of Africa to
be returned and put in a South African museum.
However, like the majority of African leaders, South
Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa offered his
condolences following the death of the Queen but
many have said instead he should have called for the
diamond to be returned.

Politics / Southern, Middle Belt Leaders Reject Okowa As PDP VP Candidate by BuhariCarryGo: 4:57pm On Jun 17, 2022
The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) have
rejected Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as running mate to presidential
candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar.
The foremost group, in a statement to newsmen in Warri, declared
Okowa as a “betrayer of the trust reposed on him” for accepting the
vice presidency nomination.
The statement which berated the actions of the Delta Governor was
signed by Chief (Dr.) Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, SMBLF/Pan Niger Delta
Forum; Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Afenifere; Dr. Dru Bitrus, Middle Belt
Forum and Ambassador (Prof.) George Obiozor, Ohaneze Ndigbo
Worldwide respectively.
The Southern leaders said it was particularly “disappointing” giving
the fact that Gov. Okowa is currently the chairman of the South-
South Governors’ Forum, as well as a native of Owa-Alero, an Igbo
speaking area in the state.
The statement recalled that on May 11, 2021, the 17 southern
governors, comprising those of the ruling All Progressives Congress
(APC) and PDP, under the Chairmanship of Ondo state governor,
Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, reached a decision that the presidency
should rotate to the south on expiration of President Muhammadu
Buhari’s tenure, for “fairness, equity and justice”.
Continuing it said: “And this very Governor Okowa was the host of
that historic meeting. The Southern Governors later met again in
Lagos, on July 5, where they reaffirmed their decision, and again in
Enugu, on September 16, to restate the call that the presidency
should rotate to the south in 2023.
“It is essential to underline that the Southern and Middle Belt
Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF), applauded the meeting of the governors,
given its significant representation and the gravity of the outcome;
we followed up and issued a similar statement after our meeting in
Abuja on the 30th of May 2021, asking that the presidency should
rotate to the south.
“And went further, on several other occasions, to caution political
stakeholders from the South, including serving and former
governors, ministers, senators, etcetera, not to, on any account,
allow themselves to be appointed or nominated as running mate to
any presidential candidate, if the presidency is not zoned to the
south and that we will work against such person or persons.
“It is, therefore, most unfortunate that the Governor of Delta State,
Senator Ifeanyi Okowa who should know better, accepted his
appointment as running mate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
“We do not have anything personal against Ifeanyi Okowo but his
action is treacherous and tantamount to a despicable pawning of
the political future of the people of Southern

Politics / Senator Offers Hajj Slot To Delegates Who Returned Cash After Voting Against Him by BuhariCarryGo: 4:03pm On Jun 17, 2022
APC Senator Offers Hajj Slots To Delegates Who Returned Cash After Voting Against Him

Senator Smart Adeyemi, who represents Kogi West in the National Assembly, has offered to sponsor five persons to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on hajj pilgrimage for returning the cash he gave out to delegates during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary in the senatorial zone.

Adeyemi’s return bid to the Senate was short lived when he scored 43 votes at the primary election, putting him at a distant third.

Sunday Karimi, who clinched the party’s ticket, scored 288 votes while Muyiwa Aina came second with 73 votes.

Party delegates at different levels raked millions of Naira from aspirants seeking to woo them.

Speaking with journalists at the National Assembly in Abuja on the outcome of the primary held May 28, 2022, Adeyemi described the election as complete rape of democracy, a day-light robbery and an extremely manipulated exercise.

The lawmaker said he participated in the primary against the advice of the state’s APC chairman, Abdullahi Bello, who, he said, asked him to step down and work fully for the presidential bid of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.

He said a closed door meeting, called by the state’s party chairman at the instance of the governor, to pressure him to withdraw from the race, was deadlocked as he insisted on going ahead.

Adeyemi alleged that delegates were coerced to vote against their choices, except insignificant few.

He said five among the delegates from Koton Karfe local government area returned the money he gave out for “transport, accommodation and feeding” expenses after they voted against him.

The lawmaker said he was moved by their honesty and asked them to go with the money with a promise to sponsor them to Makkah on hajj pilgrimage in 2023.

He said: “Normally, we give some supports to delegates to augment their expenses, transport, feeding and accommodations. But don’t ask me how much.

“Delegates from a particular local government, which is predominantly inhabited by Muslims, were not allowed to vote for me because the returning officer, who is from that local government and equally a Muslim asked, them to support Sunday Karimi, who is from a neighbouring federal constituency to mine.

“This local government is called Koton Karfe. A week after the election, five of them came to Abuja and they are all Muslims. They said to me that in Islam, it is haram (prohibited) to take what does not belong to you.

“So, senator, the money you gave for feeding, accommodation and transport to support us, we have returned all your money because we were not allowed to vote for you. But you are our candidate. They bust into tears, that they had been denied. But please, take our photographs for record purposes and future.

“This is your money. I look at them and said you have endeared Islam to my heart even though I’m a Christian. You returned the money? Please go with the money. I have blessed this money for you. They started crying and I assured them that next year, the five of you, I will send you to Makkah. If your faith in Islam is like this, then you have made me to respect Islam the more.

“I have sponsored not less than 400 Muslims to Makkah. But for five Muslims to return the money I gave to them back to me and said it is haram, I was moved emotionally.

“I never knew we still have Nigerians like these people. They returned money and said they were denied to vote for me. I took their pictures.”

Politics / Private Jets: 30 Of 65 Verified Planes To Pay Nigeria Customs Duties – Official by BuhariCarryGo: 3:30pm On Aug 02, 2021
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says 30
out of 65 private airplanes verified so far are
liable to pay required duties to the federal
government.
The Customs Public Relations Officer, Joseph
Attah, made this known while speaking with
the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja
on Sunday.
Mr Attah explained that some of these
planes came into the country by Temporary
Importation agreement which allows them
to bring the jets without payment because it
was secured by a bond.
He said that thereafter many of them failed
to turn up to pay on the expiration of the
agreement which necessitated the
verification.
He stated that with this exercise, there
would be more revenue to be accrued to the
federal government because those who
failed to adhere to the agreement would be
made to pay the duties.
The customs’ spokesperson said the
verification had also given an opportunity to
the service to clearly differentiate those
planes in the country that were on
commercial operations from those owned
and used for private purposes.
Mr Attah restated that the verification was
not meant to embarrass anybody but to
ensure that the right or required duties
were paid to the government by the owners
of these private planes.
He further disclosed that with the impact of
the first two weeks extension, the service
had again given another two weeks which
commenced from Monday, July 26, to Friday,
August 6.
“Considering the rising number of
compliance and the number of jets that are
liable for payment of duties as well as
indications by those people to do so, the
Comptroller-General has again graciously
given them another two weeks.https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/476901-private-jets-30-of-65-verified-planes-to-pay-nigeria-customs-duties-official.html
