She saw him pacing up and down the garden, the cool evening breeze blew his deodorant sharply into her nose. She stood still, deciding what to do.

He turned sharply, their gaze met. Those eyes! She looked away.

"Baby?" he too was undecided.

As if suddenly drawn by a cord, she ran into his waiting arms.

"I'm sorry" he whispered

She searched his eyes "Emeka, I'm sorry for..."

He placed a finger on her lips
"Shhh, we all make mistakes..." Emeka smiled.

"Thank you." tears streaked down her cheeks.

"Don't cry" he wiped her tears.

"I came to take you with me.." he took her hands.

"me?" she whispered.

"uhm, so that we can spend our lives together, I think we should be one body" He explained searching her eyes.

"Are you asking me to marry you?" she sounded coy.

"yea, please..." he brought out a saphire ring.

"will you marry me?" he knelt on a knee.

"Yes" she whispered tears streaming down her face.

He started to insert the ring into her fingers..

Boom! came the sound of a gun shot. Betty shivered.
Emeka held his stomach and sloped towards the ground.
Only then did she realise he was shot.

"Emeka" she gasped

She bent over him "Emeka?" she whispered in fear.
But he was unconcious.

"Emeka!" She shook him vehemently.
"Please open your eyes" she whispered.

"Emeka don't leave me here, please don't leave me.." she wailed throwing her self on his body.

She heard a siren blasting the air.
Next thing she heard was

"You are under arrest."

Her head was spinning, she didn't stand up from Emeka's body, she kept begging him not to leave her.

A policeman dragged her up, handcuffed her hands, and led her towards a waiting van.
Tears blurred her vision. She kept screaming.
"Emeka please don't leave me, don't let them take me away... Emeka...biko nu oooo"

"shut up" the police office yelled at her.

She made to jump out of the van but a resounding slap stopped her.
She staggered and fell, her head bashing a rim...she tried to open her eyes...everything became dark, she passed out.

Edith gaped at her sobbing friend disbelievingly. This girl is wierd! She thought.

"So you are now Jay-Jay's Enemy?" she asked, her voice almost a whisper.

"I don't know...he said he doesn't wanna see me again.." Betty whimpered.

"se ori re buru? You thought he was joking?" Edith galred at her.

"I don't know if I'm mad too...everything- everyone is against me." Betty wailed

Edith felt sorry for her friend. What could she do to help.
"everybody is not against you, atleast I'm not. I'm still here for you." her lips quivered.

"My mother wants me to be a 5 pointer, she believes my relationship with boys is my stumbling block.." Betty lamented.

"Life is wicked" she concluded
before lyimg down on bed. She hugged her teddy, it was a gift from Jay-Jay. She wished the teddy would turn into Jay-Jay.

"Jay, I'm sorry.." she sobbed into the teddy

"stop crying, everything will be fine huh?!" edith assured her.

Things actually went on fine, Edith was right after all. Betty was in her final year, writting her final exams, she was now a sequential 5 pointer. Her name was a popular one in her department.

She was sitting beside the twin statue, she was exhausted after writting two papers that morning. She ran her hands on the statue and Emeka's face flashed across her mind. This was their favourite spot.

They had their first kiss behind the statue. She could vividly remember how it felt, tasted and how her lips got swollen in the process.

She smiled gently, trying to wave his face off her mind but it lingered, bringing sweet memories back. She could remember his seductive looks that made her felt special, how he complimented everything she did either good or bad.

She sighed. She learnt from Edith that he left for his youth service last year. He must have moved on with another girl...

She looked around her, wishing he'd appear.

She saw Tiger sauntering towards her, perhaps he was here to kill her. Her heart raced fastly. She quickly stood up, picked her bag, ready to go when he called out.

"Sisi how far na" he got to where she is.

"Hy..." she sounded nervous.

"how you dey?" he was smiling.

"Fine"

"Person no come dey see you again, na book cos am?" he queried.

She managed a smile.

"hmn, ever since Jay-Jay bin travel, you no fit come greet person ba?" he continued.

"He travelled?" she couldn't hide her suprise.

"Ehn now! You know say him graduate last year na, so him papa say him no go do NYSC, now him be medical practitioner for UK." Tiger explained.

"Wow thats nice!" was all she could say.

"Anyway make I dey go, If Jay-Jay call you, tell am say I dey hail" he said before walking away.

Gosh! So Tiger never knew she and Jay-Jay aint together anylonger? Wow! That means he kept it a secret. But wait! UK? Thats too far, she might never see him again. She thought as she walked slowly towards the hostel.

Betty was sitting alone in the room, she's done with her exams, she was just waiting for Edith to conclude her's before she vacate school.

There was a knock on the door.
"Come in"

a short fat girl peeped in.
"Is Betty Amah here?" she asked in a baritone voice.

Betty looked at her amused
"Yes, I'm Betty."

"somebody is looking for you, he said you should meet him at the biological science garden" her baritone voice was deeper now.

"what's his name?" Betty asked

"me don't know, go and see for yourself" the girl replied impatiently, before taking her leave.

Betty wondered who it was. Perhaps it was one of her numerous coursemates.
Or one of those JJC's she gave tutorials.
She quickly adjusted her skirt, wore her shoes and walked out.

"Girlie, what happened? I called you during the hollys but your number won't connect. Even if your phone had a problem, you should have atleast called me through your mama's phone now" Edith nagged eyeing her friend, who just arrived campus-

Betty sighed, unpacking her bags.

"Betty.." Edith yelled.

"Please, I'm not in the mood now, I need to rest" Betty replied sitting on the carpet.

Edith sensed trouble, "any problem?" she lowered her voice.

"Frienie, this holiday was hell for me, momma siezed my phone, I had endless sermons, I cried almost everyday...she even called me an aristo..." Betty scratched her ears

"and now she reduced my provision by half, pocket money too she reduced...Oh my!" she ran her hands over her face.

"Serious? But why now?" Edith looked worried.

"What else? Cos she saw Jay-Jay, cos Emeka called and because I'm growing bigger and fairer" Betty explained waving her hands.

"unbelievable!" Edith muttered.

"Na you know that one!" Betty murmured rubbing her forehead.

"Baby what happened? I've been calling..."

"I no longer use a phone!" Betty cut Emeka short. She wasn't ready for any useless question.

"But why?" Emeka looked suprised.

"a choice! I don't need a phone."
she snapped

"But.." he started

"Emeka, we need to talk" she cut him short again.

"Yea?" He looked kind of worried.

"Can you just give me a break? I mean..errm, if we can part ways for now...I mean..." she became short of words and fell silent.

She wasn't sure of her actions, but she had to choose between Emeka and her Education, her mum had threatened to withraw her from school if she don't stop making boyfriends.

Emeka stared at her blankly.
"Are you saying we should break up?"

"Yea... No hurt intended, just wanna be alone for now" she felt her heart pounding

"Did I do something wrong to you?" Emeka asked confused.

Oh yes! You did, you made her sieze my phone! You made me loose her trust! She wanted to blurt out.

"No...just that, things aint okay.." she explained quitely avoiding his eyes.

Emeka felt the sky crushing him down, was it some kinda bad dream.
"Baby I'm sorry if I wronged you, please" he made to hold her hands but she stepped away.

"Please, let it just end here, now..." she sniffed, wiping a tear.

Emeka too was teary.
"Baby," he whispered.
"Don't leave me, if you do, I might not survive it" he pleaded.

"you would survive, you were living before I came, my absence won't make much difference, just let me go!" she said amidst tears.

" Baby.."

But she turned and ran blindly towards the hostel.

"So what are you telling me?" Jay-jay asked her.

"I left Emeka..." came Betty's timid reply

"hmn..because of what your mum did to you?" he said harshly

"You are a disappointment!" He blurted out. " Oh yes you are! That's how you're gonna pay that guy? After all the time wasted? After all he did for you? I guess one day, you'd ask me to leave you too" his eyes turned red

"No..." Betty was crying profusely, she had ran to Jay-Jay, to tell him her problems. And now, he was mad at her.

"Anyway, that's your headache not mine. I was wrong all along, I thought you were good..but...I won't wait for you to ask me out of your life, atleast after using me to get rid of your enemies.." He drew a sharp breathe
"Leave my house! Don't come looking for me again! Never!" he barked out showing her the door.

"Jay? You're asking me out of your house" Betty's face was full of painful suprise.

"and out of my life too." he added walking her towards the exit.
He pushed her out roughly, slamming the door shut.

Betty watched her mum wash the dishes for a while.

"Are you sure you don't need help ma'am?" Betty said smiling

"No, don't worry." came her mum's sharp reply.

She wondered why her mum had been acting strangely ever since she came back. She sighed and walked into her room. The house was too boring. Her phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Hello, baby, wats up?" Emeka asked

"I'm just bored.." she wished a million times she was in school.

"What do I do now to cheer you up?" Emeka's voice was low

Her mother walked into her room

"I'l call you back later" Betty ended the call, switching it off just incase he called back.

"Mum you need something?"

Dr Amah glared at her daughter who seemed so uneasy.

"Who were you talking to on phone?"

"A friend- from school" Betty frowned.

"A friend? A friend that has no name or gender?" Dr Amah's voice was rising.

Betty bit her lips, what was she gonna say.

"Firstly, it was you hugging a boy in my presence, now its you calling a guy." She glared, her eyes ogling

Betty shivered, she was in trouble.

"Betty you changed faster than I thought, So you are now an aristo girl ehn?" she shrilled

Whatever Aristo meant! "Mum...I.." Betty's voice trailed off.

"You left my house, told me you were going to school huh? You left here two 18 months ago an innocent girl, but now your eyes are opened, oh yes! You are becoming fairer, your bossoms enlarging, your hips widening, you now roll your buttocks when walking! I thought I gave you a solid home training" Dr Adams yelled.

Betty's eyes popped out, her mum of all people accusing her of sleeping around!

"Now, let me have that phone!"

She gave it to her mum quitely, watched her storm out of the room, before slumping into bed; sobbing into her pillow.

Jay-Jay was sitting beside his father, they were chatting away happily. He was telling him about Betty,

"Dad, if you see her, you'd think she truly is my sister." Jay-Jay said smiling.

"hmn" Robert grunted disbelievingly.

"Truth! A friend once remarked we had the same nose." He added.

"Jacob, same nose again?" Robert was laughing.

"Serious dad, I wish I had her pictures here, I'd have shown you, I left them in school" Jay-Jay chuckled.

"I'd love to meet her" Robert concluded.

"Really? Wow! Then I'l bring her here some day." He sounded excited

"Bia Jacob, is that girl an ordinary friend to you?" Robert smiled suspiciously,

"Daddy!" Jay-jay shrieked. This man is bad too.
"I told you she is like a sister"

"Well, there are different kinds of sisters, we have the neutral,acidic,and basic" Robert teased him.

"our relationship is neutral o, normal brother and sister." Jay-Jay said amidst laughter.

"I hope so.." Robert eyed him.

"Dad?" Jay-Jay frowned

"Ogini? I didn't say anything now" Robert chuckled.

"Hmmm, better talk your mind o" Jay-Jay warned, and they all rolled with laughter.

Betty and Edith were busy arranging their things, they were vacating for the session.

"So would come visiting during the holidays?" Edith asked throwing her make-up kit into her hand bag.

"I'm not sure, you know mum restricts my movements when I'm at home" Betty replied neatly folding a dress- it was a gift from Emeka.

"Omo mummy!" Edith explained.

"Are jealous? Abeg help me push this shoes into that bag" Betty said pushing a pair of sandals towards her.

"Yo!" she exclaimed finally after zipping a ghana-must-go bag.
"Mum should be close by now"

Her phone rang.
"Hello momma?" she quipped.

"yea! Just a few minutes." she added before hanging up.

"She's here!" she told Edith.
They both dragged their trolley bags, Betty's mum will drop Edith off.

Dr Amah watched her daughter heading towards her direction with her friend.

"Hy mum" both girls chorused giving her a tight hug.

"you're both looking healthy." she patted their heads.

"Well we've got no germs in our school" Betty pouted opening the boot of her mum's car
They all laughed and sauntered back towards to hostel, they emerged again carrying their ghana-must-go bags. A Toyota Yaris pulled up blocking their way.

"Who is this one again?" Edith hissed.

"I came early enough!" Jay-Jay got down from the car.

"Hi brother" Betty hugged him, not minding that her mum was watching.

"I just wanted say goodbye.." Jay-Jay chuckled.

"You want her to start crying abi?" Edith queried.

"No! So where's the cab?" Jay-Jay glanced around, he was avoiding Betty's eyes delibrately.

"My mum is the one to take us, she is over there" Betty sniffed, tears were welling up her eyes.

"Can I say hi to her?"

"Sure" Edith chirped, whe wasn't ready for this their 'tears-shedding galour', na every session them go dey cry sef!

"Good afternoon ma." Jay-Jay greeted Dr Amah.

"How are you doing?" she replied giving him a suspicious look.

"Mum, this is Jay-Jay, my brother like friend" Betty tried to be formal.

"Jay-Jay?" Dr Amah corked an eyebrow..

"I'm Jacobs Robert ma." Jay-Jay explained chuckling.

Dr Amah froze a bit before managing a smile.
"Hope you are fine?" she said with a wry smile.

"I'm fine ma"
"Errm, bye" Jay-Jay said turning to leave.

"Jay.."
he turned

"I'l miss you." Betty said despite Edith's pinch.

"Me too" He replied hugging her.
They were bonded for life, Her mother's reaction not withstanding.

"Bye" He waved them as they drove away.

"It seems her mum won't like me!" he muttered igniting his car.
Well he isn't Betty's date, just a good friend! He drove off.

Jay-Jay was standing facing the mirror, combing his hair. He thought of Betty, he's going to see her today immediately after his papers. He's gonna suprise her, he tried to imagine her reaction when she saw him.
A screaming voice interrupted his thoughts.
"haaaaaaa! Biko nu ooooo, please oooo, I will die ooo,".
It was G-gal.

"Badt girl!" he chuckled. He had better gone there before his boys killed her.

"Skull?" He banged the door.

One of the boys opened the door, holding his loose trousers.

"Una wan kill person?" he chided them.

"She deserve to die. The wages of sin is death" One of the boys said pushing G-gal roughly, aiming to have some more...

"Taaa! Abeg e don do na! Una no dey tire! Free the container na" Jay-Jay pulled the boy up.

"Hope you had a blissful night sweerie." he was chuckling.
He squatted beside her
"Now, I won't kill you, neither will my boys. I want you to leave this town in the next 24 hrs, If I set my eyes on you again...Hmn, read my lips" Jay-Jay growled pulling her hair roughly.
She let out a shrill, she looked miserable.

"Guys! I'm off to school, me get exam this morning, make una carry this thrash comot from my house." He addressed his boys.

"Give her some exercise before sending her away." He added with a mischievous smile.
He moved towards the exit "people talk to people-" He said

"People understand" his boys chorused.

He left, sauntering towards the garage.
He got into his car and drove off, he could still hear her screaming.

Betty sat down beside Emeka at the Biological Sciences Garden. They were engrossed in a deep discussion, she was telling him about the exam she wrote that morning, about the invigilators, the giraffe necked student e.t.c.

She felt a hand behind her, the hand covered her face. She sat still

"Emmy who's there?" she asked Emeka.

"Don't know" Emeka was laughing.

"Edith?" she asked

"No.."

"Please tell me now.." she pleaded.

"Guess again" Emeka told her.

"Eeerrrrm.." she heard a chuckle, she damn knew that voice.

"Jay-Jay?" her voice was faint.

"Don't know too." Jay-Jay laughed taking his hands off her face.

She stopped momentarily to be sure she wasn't dreaming.

"Jay.." she sprung into his arms.

"Lil' sis" Jay-Jay said swinging her off her feet.

"Oh my God..." she whispered after he'd set her down.

"Hmn...how are you?" He pulled her cheeks before turning to shake Emeka's hand.

"I missed you.." she replied pouting her lips.

"Well I'm no longer missing you, cos I'm with you now" He chuckled.

"Guy you scarce o.." Emeka patted his back.

"Hmn...had no choice..." He smiled sitting beside Emeka.

Betty was standing before them, watching as Emeka and Jay-Jay exchanged pleasantries. They were no more enemies, but friends. She smiled, feeling fulfilled.

"I came back Three days ago" Jay-Jay told Emeka.

"Three days!" Betty squealed.
"And you're just coming to see me now?" she frowned.

"I had to study, that's why, anyway, I'm back!" He took her hands.

"Guess what, my guy" Emeka chirped.
He whispered something to Jay-Jay.
"Wow no wonder she has increased" Jay-Jay laughed.

"Who say men don't gossip! Amebos" Betty pouted her lips.
And they burst into laughter.

G-gal smiled to herself. She got the wind of information that Jay-jay was back, after all her plans, he still came back! She's gonna launch her last attack.

She glanced at her wristwatch 12 midnight, she climbed the wall fencing Jay-Jay's house and dropped with a faint thud. She took a quick look around her before proceeding to move.

She imagined Jay-Jay pleading with her as she squeezed life out of him. He's gonna pay for the humilation he caused her.

She heard a swift movement in the mango tree beside her, she quickly pulled out her gun.
She aimed at the tree, watching carefully to see what will drop.

She saw a boy jumped down, she aimed at him about to shoot when she felt the sharp edge of a dagger on her neck.

"Drop that gun!" Tiger growled

she quickly obeyed, Rox picked the gun.

"Please let me go" she pleaded
"I'l do anything you want"

"Hmn, carry her to the guard room" Tiger ordered Rox, ignoring G-gal.

Rox dragged her into a room, where 5 other boys were smoking weed while Tiger went to the main building to inform Jay-Jay.


Jay-Jay was busy studying his books, he's got alot to cover, he prays he'l make his papers.
A sharp knock interrupted him, he hissed. He had warned these guys not to disturb him.

"Wetin dey sup?" he asked Tiger who was wearing a mischievous smile.
Tiger quickly briefed him about G-gal.
Jay-Jay hurried after him sharply.

"What a suprise! You never told me you were coming, I'd have arranged a better reception for you." Jay-Jay said sarcastically patting G-gal's head.

He let out a high pitched laugh before turning to his boys.
"Where are the rest?"

"They don go back to campus." a boy replied smoking his weed.

"Guys! She brought her self, we're gonna give what she wants." He said chuckling.

"Exactly" Tiger roared amidst laughter, he knew what Jay-Jay would say.

"Each of you should have just One round, and when I say one round; you know what I mean." jay-Jay smiled

"One round?"Rox groaned

"Pity her, she is a fellow cultist" Jay-Jay explained.

"But you know what, make sure you batter the thing, injure am, so that if she see us tomorrow she go faint." He instructed.

"You first boss." Tiger said offering him a pack of condom.

"Oh no! Please don't spoil me. I am a virgin o, I want to reserve my body for my future wife" Jay-Jay squealed in a girlish voice and they all rolled with laughter.

"Ahoi! Get to work!" He told them leaving the room, with G-gal at their mercy.

"Jacob please open the door" Robert pleaded.

Jay-Jay inserted his fingers into ears.

"Biko, open the door." Robert pleaded again.

"What is it?" Jay-Jay glared at his father, opening the door slightly.

"Can I come in?"

"Why?"

"We need to talk." Mr Robert looked sober.

Jay-Jay opened the door wider letting his father in.

"Sit down" Robert said quitely sitting on an arm chair.

Jay-Jay didn't sit down, he rested his back on the wall instead, folding arms across his chest.

"I said sit..."

"I don't wanna sit!" he cut his father short.

"If you don't sit,then we won't talk" Robert sighed

"That means you aint ready to talk"

"Jacob do you realize you're talking to your father?" Robert's voice was rising.

"yes I do."

"Jacobs what has come over you?" Robert yelled.

"Nothing at all!"

Robert gasped. He shook his head gently "Linda!" he muttered under his breathe.

"What?" Jay-Jay couldn't help asking.

"Your mother, you sound just like her, stubborn and unruly" Robert said gently.

Jay-Jay was shocked, his mother?!

"Jacob, you are just like your mum! She ran away when you were just one year old, I haven't seen her, I came back to Nigeria cos of her, but can't find her." He said painfully.

"Jacob, you are my only son..." he continued.
"I want the best for you. Ever since your mum left me, I've set my hope on you, my life is strapped on you..." his voice became shaky.

Jay-Jay melted within, he sighed.

"Jacob please, don't let me down."

Jay-Jay squatted beside his father.
"Dad I love you, you know that, I won't hurt you..."

"You already did, you joined a cult!"

"Okay dad, let's strike a deal, you'l let me go back to school and I'll shun cultism." He said placing an arm round his father.

"I want your happiness, you're going back to school tomorrow, please amend your ways" Roberts said quitely.

"Love you dad" Jay-Jay hugged his father.

"Love you son" Robert hugged him tightly.

"So dad, tomorrow right?" he sounded excited.

"Yea, promise me you'll look for your mother" Robert smiled faintly.

"Yea" Jay-Jay cared less.

"Come let me show you her picture..." Robert stood up.

Jay-Jay followed him, Oh yes! Tomorrow he'l be in school.

Exams was fast approaching, all the serious students are getting excited, while the dull ones are getting nervous.

Betty was sitting with Emeka (they've reconciled) and Edith in the Library, they were studying with keen interest.
She soon got bored;
"I'm tired" she sighed.

"me too" Edith whispered while Emeka grunted.

"and famished too" Edith added.

"Lets go to the coke village, we can come back here later" Betty suggested.

"You guys go, I wanna finish solving this physics." Emeka told them.

They both left hurriedly because the Libarian was looking at them.

Betty sipped her juice.
"Girlie, I've been watching you for some time now, you seem withdrawn, always looking distant, wats up friend, or is it the exams?" Edith asked biting at her chicken.

"hmm" betty smiled

"come Betty! I asked a question and you just smiled?" Edith queried

"I'm fine" Betty's voice was low.

"I know that, but you aint fine in there" Edith pointed towards her heart

"Its just that..I...its Jay-Jay" betty told her.

"Whats with Jay-Jay ?"

"He said he's gonna be away for just two weeks, but its almost a month now, no trace of him, no calls, no texts...and worst of all Exams is just two weeks away." Betty explained looking down at her food

"don't worry, he's gonna be fine, He would be back soon, okay, Jay-Jay can take care of himself" Edith was trying to cheer her up.

"Okay" Betty sighed.

"Cheer up jor, eat up fast, Emeka is waiting!" Edith told her with a smile.
Betty managed a low laugh.

Jay-Jay was pacing to and fro in his room. He was deep in thoughts. He has locked himself up in his room since last night, not even his father's persistent knockings made him open the door.
Rubbish! He drew a sharp breathe, what was his father thinking anyway? Zimbabwe of all countries! His fingers ran through his hair roughly. For once, he regretted being a Robert's family member.

He wondered what could be going on with Betty, Tiger called this morning to say she is alright, but even still... He is not satisfied

The person who told his father he is a cultist will surely pay for this!

For the first time he wished he had a mother. He had never known her, neither did his dad tell him about her. He resigned never to ask about her, cos he thought she'd be dead.

A sharp knock interrupted his thoughts...

What the heck is this man looking for again! He groaned.

He moved away from the door determined not to open it. His dad should just leave him alone!

Betty and her friend Edith rushed into their room gleefully.

"Girlie, you are too much." edith said hugging her friend.

"You show her say you no be Igbo girl wey dem born and train in yoruba land for nothing" Edith was praising her.

Betty laughed.
"Have you ever seen me dance before?" she asked Edith.

"Omo, you sabi dance? Edith was laughing too.

"Hey! Play this song...errm, is it gaga crazy? That one the guy was saying 'sugar cane no be bamboo'..you gerrit?" Betty was removing her jacket.

"We are really going crazy!" Edith replied searching for the song in her phone.

They both started dancing, celebrating victory. Betty's phone rang.
"Who is it again!" she hissed

"Who is it?"

"Who else? Emeka now! " Betty threw the phone and it fell on the bed.

"Hello?" Edith picked the call

"Hello? Baby..."

"She's not the one, she can't talk to you now! Call her later" Edith snapped ending the call.

"Go and learn how to beg properly" she hissed.

"jacobs! What has come over you? You- a cultist? Unbelievable!" Robert yelled at his son.

Edith looked at her friend Betty, pitying her. She has been in a bad mood for todays now- since that episode with Emeka.

"I saw him with G-gal this afternoon, at The Mama's Kitchen" tears welled up her eyes

"I think..." betty got down from bed.
"I think, he is doing that to hurt me, and I'm truly hurt!" she moved towards the mirror hanging on the wall.

"G-gal of all people! Sometimes I wonder...if...if...if..." her voice trailed off, she sniffed and wiped her tears.

"Hmmmn, but, I think G-gal is the one forcing herself on him, I don't think...Emeka would do such" Edith told her wiping her tears.

Betty smiled a faint smile, she knew that too, but she think she is losing.

"When is Jay-Jay coming back?"

"In the next four days." she replied.

"I'l arrange something, atleast before he comes back, we'l handle G-gal in our own way" Edith said

"How?" Betty couldn't help laughing.

"wait and see! G-gal will have to pay."

Betty stared at Edith suprised, what can she do, but Edith was wearing this determined face,.

He noticed some thing unusual about the restaurant he was in, on each table he saw a boy, each wearing a black jacket, they weren't looking at him, so there's nothing to fear.

"Hi"

He groaned, it was G-gal again, she sat down facing him, wearing that seductive smile. Something caught his attention, he saw Edith talking to someone on phone, she waved at him and hurried out of the restaurant.

"Having lunch?" G-gal asked

"Errm...not really" he replied drinking from a can of maltina.

"Hmm, you look nice" she quipped

"Thanks, you see G-gal, you need to leave now, I'm expecting my Girlfriend" he wanted her to leave him alone.

"Hy?"
He looked up it was Betty.

"Hope I'm not disturbing anything?" she asked mockingly.

"I...errm" He felt nervous.

"Emeka, this is a very bad thing to do, G-gal of all people!" Betty said quitely.

"Are you Jealous?" G-gal retorted.

Her hands were too swift, she grabbed the can of maltina Emeka was drinking from, splashed some on G-gal's face and emptied the remnants on her dress.

G-gal stood up astonished!

"Why don't take a look around you?" Edith said from behind them.

G-gal's eyes moved round-
about five out of Jay-Jay's boys were present.
Tiger waved his dagger as if to say hi, Rox was cleaning his gun with a tissue, three other boy's adjusted their belts in a bid to show them the guns and knives they were carrying.

G-gal gasped, Emeka too was like What the Bleep!
Even Betty was suprised, wow, Edith knew Jay-jay's boys? How comes she got them here. She felt secured.

"So you see..." Betty continued
"You shouldn't try that okay, I'm not the Betty you used to know, I'm now Jay-Jay's sister." she chuckled.

"And I am warning you, stop stalking me! Stay off my affairs! Stop lingering in my paths" Betty told her turning to leave.

"Hey! Didn't you forget something?" Edith was laughing.

"Oh yes!" Betty looked at her hands, and whoof! Her hand landed on G-gal's face, her other hand followed swiftly.

"And that's just the foretaste of what she would do to you, next time you cross her paths" Edith told G-gal giving her a knock. She made some signs, and the waitress brought three cans of maltina.


"Let's party.." Edith whispered as she and Betty emptied the contents on G-gal's head.

"It's enough. Let's go." Betty said dropping the can.
They both left the restaurant with Tiger and the rest following suit.

Emeka swallowed hard, he stared at the 'maltina-drenched' G-gal, she was crying now. He felt like bursting into fits of laughter, he was impressed, Betty was fighting for him, she truly loved him. He left the restaurant happily.****

they turned startled.

Emeka stood up too "Who is he?"

"I don't know him, I've not seen this face before!" Betty replied looking more confused now.

"You heard she doesn't know you, can you leave now!" Emeka told the boy.

"Betty-love, is it cos I didn't come over last night or what?, okay,I'm sorry, you know I love you" the boy said trying to hug Betty, but she pushed him away.

"Leave me!" she shrieked

"Kay! Or whatever you are, leave this place now! I won't have you harrassing her right in front of me!" Emeka's voice was rising.

"My dad wants me to come over urgently, details- till i'm back" he said slowly,

"No tell me now" she wanted to hear it all.

"No, you just take care, stay out of trouble okay, remember I have invisible eyes all over the campus," he chuckled.

She tried calling and the network operator told her the number was incorrect.

Students were crowded round the notice board close to the faculty of sciences building, Betty and Edith were among them. Their end of semester result have just being place.
Betty got a second class upper, but a course was ticked absent, she gasped.

"how comes?" Edith asked

"don't know...but i wrote the exam" Betty sounded confused.

Edith thought for a while..
"Errm, come, let's go to see the lecturer." she suggested.

"what are you gonna do?"

" never mind, come with me." Edith said taking her hands.

The lecturer was a female. Mrs Okoro.
"Good afternoon ma" they both chorused

"How may I help you?" mrs Okoro asked without looking up.

"our statement of result says Betty Amah, was absent during your exams" Edith started.

"So?"

"she wasn't absent, she wrote the exams." Edith's voice was rising now.

" Who knows, maybe her paper got missing" Mrs okoro replied eyeing Betty.

"That paper isn't missing, we need to see her booklet" Edith snapped.
Betty gasped- Edith's gat the liver

"Listen girls, leave my office before I get provoked. Don't you have manners?" Mrs Okoro was visibly angry now.

"listen madam!" Edith was smiling
"It seems you don't know who Betty Amah is.." edith moved towards the table "have you heard of Jay-Jay before?" she continued.

Mrs Okoro glanced at Betty, then at Edith "Yes." she said quitely.

"Good, and hope you know what he can do when you tamper with his affairs? I guess you love your life" Edith wore a triumphant look.

Mrs Okoro looked frightened. Edith and Betty made to leave.

"Wait please" Mrs Okoro's voice was shaky.

"I have the scripts here" she said opening her locker.

"Oh.." Edith smiled mischievously.

"She had an 'A', I'm sorry" Mrs Okoro was visibly scared.

"So why did you hide it?" Edith asked

"I...I..was paid by Gloria; G-gal" edith laughed. Betty gasped.

"anyway, thats your headache, amend every thing soon, go to the exams senate, I want everything cleared by nextweek" Edith ordered.

"I promise" Mrs Okoro said slowly.

Betty and Edith left the office happily.

"What's up with this G-gal?" Betty queried,

"Don't mind her, we'l handle her, atleast, we can use Jay-Jay's name" Edith chuckled.

She stopped in her track, her heart racing fast, did he just say those words to her? A crowd of students began to gather.

"I forgive you, please stand up, we're creating a scene" her voice was shaky.

He stood up gently "thanks you." he was searching her eyes

They hugged each other warmly and the crowd of student clapped and cheered.
"ehen! See love nwantiti!" a plump girl exclaimed before walking off, the crowd began to disperse.

"That was the most romantic display, I've ever seen" it was Chuks.

Oh yes! She felt fulfilled, at least.

"This calls for a celebration" Edith said from behind them.

Betty's phone rang, it was a text message, she opened it...

She was awakened by the sound of a gun shot. She sat up abruptly pushing the bed covers away, she looked around; Yikes! It was morning. She pressed the bell button on impulse.

The door squeaked and opened with Tiger's head poking in.
"You need anything?" he asked

he doesn't have the courtesy to greet! Mtchew. "Where's Jay-Jay?" she ignored his question.

"him don comot, e say make I tell you say him dey come now now" tiger replied alittle bit politely.

"the gunshot?" her voice was low,

Getting up gently, she moved towards the bathroom. Slowly she washed her face trying to wave Tiger's murderous face off her mind. She looked up at the mirror, her eyes were swollen. Mtchew! Maybe...

"Betty?" Jay-Jay called her

she froze,

"Where's this girl?"

she quickly wiped her face and ran out.
"There you are! How was your night?" he asked dropping a polythene bag on the table .

"Good morning" she sat down

"uhm...your eyes are swollen, you cried alot yesterday.." he squatted beside her

"wanna talk about it?" he continued. She shook her head.

"okay" he sighed pulling the polythene bag towards him.
He brought out a flask, bread, butter and boiled eggs.
"breakfast" he told her standing up to get a mug.
Gently he served her while she ate.

"You have lectures today?" he asked, she nodded.

"Eat up let me take back to school." he sounded like a father, she wanted to laugh but kept a straight face.

Betty sipped some water and swirled it in her mouth before swallowing it., that was her fifth glass, she was lying down on the soft rug watching Tv with Jay-Jay who was sipping some wine.
Her eyes drifted to the wall clock. She suddenly became time conscious.

"Jeez!..." she quickly got up

"did anything bite you?" Jay-jay asked sipping more wine

"yes...no..time" she pointed at the clock

"what's with time?" he didn't look up.

"Its past 8pm already, and the gate to the hostel closes by 7:30." she said pitying herself

"you can pass the night here if you wish.."he started
she stared at him- in her wildest dreams.

"If you think you can spend the night in the harem of cultists, then you are welcomed." He added smiling.

"No". She said almost in a whisper

"uhm?"

"I'm leaving now" she said picking her purse.

"okay." he picking up something that looked like a reciever"bring over the camry" he said into it.

"Lemme drop you off." he told her.

"I'm going to Emeka's place- I..i'll spend the night there" her voice was low.

"I'll drop you there," he chuckled.
He didn't seem to care. He led the way out, they got into the car and drove off.

The journey to Emeka's place took 30 minutes.
"here we are." Jay-Jay whispered, stoping the car right in front of Emeka's flat.

"Thank you" she smiled

"I'l call you tomorrow morning" he was smiling too.

She knocked gently on Emeka's door, she is really gonna suprise him.

"Hi.." she said as Emeka opened the door.

"wow.." was all Emeka could say before pulling her into a warm hug.
"Sit down, let me get you something to eat" he sounded excited.

She sat down; the thought of food made her happy.

"To what do I owe this visit?" he asked placing a plate of jollof rice before her.

Visit! "I was at Jay-Jay's place, I wasn't time conscious, it got late, so I decided to come and..you know..spend the night here" she explained slowly.

"Because Jay-Jay couldn't accomodate you for the night or what?" Emeka asked with a low laugh.

Betty felt insulted, she stood up gently, picking her purse and phone "I'm sorry for the trouble" she said moving towards the door.

"Hey, c'mon baby, that was not what I meant..." he said apologetically.

She wasn't listening, she left, he followed her, he looked left and right but no trace of her. He sighed heavily, he was in deep shit! He should'nt have said those words...He felt the world crashing at his feet.

Betty was standing by the road side, she was breathing heavily, she was trying her best not to cry.
Damn it! She cursed under her breathe, who does he think he was anyway! She felt her forehead, her head was aching badly. Damn the headache! damn Emeka! Damn the hunger she felt! Damn...
A car pulled up beside her, Jay-Jay got down, "Let's go home little sis" he whispered taking her hands gently, opened the door and she got in without a word.
He looked at her briefly before driving off.

He helped her out of the car, sat her down on a cushion in the living room "Stop crying" He said gently, she had been crying all the way. He opened a foil paper that contained suya

"Eat" he whispered but she shook her head

"please Nnem" he was pleading with her. She has never heard that softness in his voice before, she never knew he had the word 'please' in his dictionary.


She took a piece, it tasted foul, she made an attempt to throw up, but he held her down.

"steady there! Its not the suya, but your heart- its full of pains" he said gently, pouring some creamy substance into a mug. "here, drink up, it's milk"

she drank it all,and drank another serving halfway before keeping the mug down. He pulled her up and moved her towards his bedroom.

"you need to sleep" He whispered tucking her in bed. He put off the lights leaving only the bedside lamp.

"If you need anything, press the bell" he told her showing her a button by the bedside.

"goodnight, I'll share the spare room with Tiger" he explained before leaving the room.

Her eyelids were heavy, she closed them gently, this is where she belongs-home.

"Sister number wetin?" the cab driver asked

"number...errm...34" Betty replied glancing at the paper in her hand as if to be sure.
She was already in Odutola street, just a few blocks from Jay-Jay's house. The street was scanty, if anything happened to her here, there'd be nobody to help.

"We don reach" the cab driver announced.
She got down, gave him some naira notes; muttered a thankyou and moved toward the gate.

She knocked and knocked no answer; she got tired and decided to leave.

"Hey! Na you knock this gate" someone roared behind her. Her stomach churned, she turned swiftly.

The guy had a muderous look on his face.

"yes...errm..I'm looking for...errrm..Jay-Jay lives here?" she stuttered

"Jay-Jay?" the guy asked as if to be sure.

"Yes, good afternoon" she could not help flexing her knees.

"why you dey find am?"

"I'm his friend...sister...I need to see him" she replied.

The guy scrutinized her with his eyes.
"You no fit see am nw, him dey busy" he said with a note of finality.

She felt weak, tears welled up in her eyes. She turned slowly to leave.

" Tiger you and who dey talk?"

She gasped, she turned sharply, she saw Jay-Jay.

"na one sister like that" the guy replied.

Their eyes met- she and Jay-Jay, he looked away; she melted- she must have hurt him much. He mumbled something and walked in.

"him say make you enter" Tiger told her opening the gate wide for her. He led her to the mainly building but stopped by the door leading inside. She opened the door gently and went inside.

She closed the behind her, and looked at him, he was standing, his hands behind him, his face was neutral.

"What do you want?"

"Good evening Jay-Jay.." she started

"What do you want?" His voice was firm.

She sighed, what was she going to tell him.
"I'm sorry Jay-Jay..."

"so?" he cut her sharply.

"I'm truly sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you" she pleaded. She moved towards him but he backed away.

"what makes you think I'm hurt?" He asked

"I'm sorry, please" her voice was shaky.

"So?" he asked again

"please forgive me" the tears rolled down her cheeks, she went on her knees.

He looked away, he hate to see her cry.
"Stand up" He whispered.

"Not until I'm forgiven" she said amidst tears.

"It's alright" he said pulling her up, he had forgiven her since, if he hadn't forgiven her he wouldn't let her in.

"Ebezina- don't cry" He said wiping her tears.

She searched his eyes. "Thank you"

"anything for you sister" he said patting her head.

"Sit down" he gestured to a sofa
"what do i offer you?" he asked smiling.

She felt homely now.

"We have water and...you don't take alcohol?" he said amidst smiles

"I don't"

" well, little sis, water is the only thing for now" He moved towards his fridge.
He offered her a glass which she drank, he stared at her for some seconds.

"you suprise me!" he stated, she looked at him questioningly

"you know, you came straight to my house without any fear that i might kill or hurt you, I gave you water- you drank without fear that I might drug you...you seem trust me so much" He said shaking his head

"every sister trusts her brother, and no brother would drug his sister" she said smiling.

"yea, you gat me at that"he chuckled.

"your favourite channel?" he picked up the Tv remote.

"Fashion TV" she replied relaxing into the sofa

"I knew it" he chuckled
