PoliticsPresident Tinubu Set To Forward Minister Nominees’ Names To Senate by Busy76(op): 9:13am On Jul 02, 2023
As lawmakers prepare to return from their Sallah break, signs suggest that President Bola Tinubu might send his ministerial nominees’ list to the National Assembly this week.

The 10th Senate and House of Representatives will resume their duties on July 4, following their recess.

It is expected that the ministerial list may be a top agenda item upon their return.

Since President Tinubu took office on May 29, there’s been considerable speculation and heated debates about who would make the cut for the ministerial positions.

The President has kept his choices under wraps, even from his closest allies.

There was a buzz last week that some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors might have the opportunity to nominate more than one person for the ministerial positions.

According to an anonymous source that spoke with Punch, the ministerial list could reach the Senate this week, with the new cabinet expected to be in place later this month.

A former coordinator in the dissolved All Progressives Congress Campaign Council, Ene Ogbole shared that the President plans to send his list to the Senate for screening shortly after legislators return.

He urged Nigerians to be patient, citing that Tinubu still has time under the new law, signed by his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

Ogbole stated, “The ministerial nominees you talked about are still in the process. I, however, don’t think the President needs up to 60 days to unveil his cabinet.

“He’s trying to get the right things done. You know the 10th National Assembly has just come on board and they were on recess for the Sallah break. As the break is now over, I can assure you that you will begin to hear names being rolled out.

“Asiwaju is still on track. He is a man of his word. And I can assure Nigerians that he’s not going to do anything short of his promises. He has also signed two or three bills into law in less than 30 days in office. That is legendary.”

The Director of Publicity for the APC, Bala Ibrahim also agreed with Ogbole.

He reassured the public that the President was not under any pressure and expressed optimism that the ministerial list would be presented after the Sallah break.

He stated, “The President still has time on his side to carefully choose his team. He is not under any kind of pressure. I don’t see any on his side. You can even see how the President extended his stay by moving from Paris to London.

“Does he look like somebody under pressure? If there is any pressure, he would have run back long before his arrival. However, we are optimistic that he will present his ministerial list after the Sallah break.”

PoliticsCharly Boy Calls For Insurrection, Violence In Nigeria by Busy76(op): 11:28pm On Jul 01, 2023
Charly Boy Calls For Insurrection, Violence In Nigeria

Charly Boy, the 73 year-old Nigerian singer, songwriter and actor took to Instagram Saturday and called on ‘exceptional’ Nigerian youths to revolt against Nigeria.

The Peter Obi rabid supporter took his cue from the unrest in France, where there have been some days of riot following the killing of a 17 year-old boy by a policeman.

Charly Boy, whose real name is Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, now wants the same reaction in Nigeria.

He did not state what should be the justification for the violence.

But it could be safely surmised that he is among the Peter Obi supporters still sulking over Obi’s thrashing in the election.

“This isn’t Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan. This is France where 9% of the population has brought down entire cities!”, he said in reference to the raging arson in parts of Paris, a video of which he shared.

“Karma from Africa? Am waiting on the exceptional Nigerian Youths to reject a system that let dem down. Una destiny dey una hand”.

In his earlier post before editing it, the musician called Nigeria a Criminal enterprise and urged Nigerian youths to bring it down.

However, most of the reactions to his post were one mighty rebuke, right on his Instagram page.

“Your kids shld lead the line…. You don’t have any positive impact in this country, what yu know how to do is preach hatred, war….this country wl move forward by God’s grace”, wrote Emmanuel Iyaniwura.

Jetima007 said: Please don’t be a reason why they destroy lives and livelihood in Nigeria sir, it is okay to rant but encouraging violence is the worse thing someone in your generation can be associated with, this battle is for us now, you can rest sir, thanks for your understanding, we will take over from here.

“Please sir. This is calling for violence, I don’t support this, I’m your big fan, but I condemned this post with everything in me”, wrote Abigail Nathaniel.

Another commenter Desanya Maestro served Charly Boy notice that he could be arrested by security agencies.

“With all due respect sir, security agencies can take this up against you as instigating youths to violence and course you all of us these things. Destruction has never done any good even outliving the generation who began it. You elders are the ones who say those who live in glass houses don’t throw stones. Let’s take things easy sir, respectfully commenting”.

“No need to wait for youth carry ur children go do am”, another writer said.

PoliticsEmefiele’s Residence Unveils 18 Ghana-must-go Bags Filled With Cash, Documents! by Busy76(op): 11:05am On Jun 18, 2023
Department of State Services (DSS) operatives have seized 18 bags, commonly referred to as “Ghana-must-go” bags, filled with money and documents from the residence of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). According to a source who spoke with Nigeria Tribune, the bags were confiscated during an extensive search of Emefiele’s home in Lagos, which took place throughout the day on Friday.

Emefiele, who was arrested on June 10, has been held in DSS custody for eight days. Insiders familiar with the matter suggest that his detention may be extended as investigations into his conduct as the head of the CBN continue. While the DSS has the authority, with court approval, to detain the former CBN leader for up to three weeks, there are indications that this period might be prolonged.

Following the completion of the property search, Emefiele was escorted from Abuja, where he was being held, back to Lagos. The large bags seized during the search were collected, and Emefiele was subsequently flown back to Abuja, where further questioning took place. Additionally, authorities are reportedly searching for Emefiele’s personal assistant, who is currently missing, in connection with the discoveries made during the ongoing investigation.

According to a source quoted by the Nigerian Tribune, “DSS took Emefiele to his house in Lagos on Thursday and returned him to Abuja on Friday afternoon. His house was searched. They took away about 18 big Ghana-must-go bags containing money and documents from the house. His personal assistant is on the run. DSS is on a manhunt for him.”

The suspension of Emefiele as CBN governor and the initiation of an investigation was carried out by President Bola Tinubu on June 9, leading to Emefiele’s subsequent arrest by the DSS.

EducationThe Hidden Costs Of The Student Interest Free Loan Exposed By Expert by Busy76(op): 10:24pm On Jun 13, 2023
On Monday, Tinubu signed the bill at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The objective of this legislation is to offer financial support to Nigerian students attending tertiary institutions. It successfully completed the third reading in the lower chamber in May.

The bill was sponsored by Femi Gbajabiamila, the former speaker of the House of Representatives.

How the bill has been analyzed by Kalu Aja, CFEI. Author, Making Money, the Economy and personal Finance easy to understand.

In his analysis, Aja commended the signing of the bill into law by President Bola Tinubu and on the other hand, made some observations, which considered not workable and also proffered solutions.

Below, is a comprehensive analysis Aja gave on the bill, now Law

Ok, read the Nigerian Education Bank Bill.

The bill is about a bank, the loans only happen because there is a bank, so I call it Education Bank Bill.

The object of the bank is to fund higher education tuition, which is always a good idea. So I commend this bill...however.

The Bank will be funded by a share capital of N1b. this is puny & does not show ambition.

N1b to capitalize a bank that will fund higher education is a non-starter.

However, the bank will get funding from many sources, including 1% of FIRS & 1% of oil and mineral profits.

What does 1% of FIRS, 1% of Net oil & Minerals revenue translate to? Let's use ACTUAL June 2022 as baseline & extrapolate, assuming a straight line

1. 1% of Net Crude Oil & Gas: N4.84b
2. 1% of solid Minerals: N80m
3. 1% of FIRS: N43b

Total: Less than N50b

Now that we have established the funding structure, I can give my opinion on the bill.

1. Why a bank? Why not just a Fund managed by the Ministry of Finance or SWF?

This bank will have overheads, including allowances for the Board of about 12, including Head office & staff.

1.2 why establish a vast, costly bureaucracy to offer loans?

The core functions performed by the Education Bank (Inflow, invest, outflow) can be performed by a Fund.

No bank should concern itself with tracking grades and employment, rather let the credit bureaus do that.

1.3 My fear is founded; most institutions end up being avenues to pay salaries. Take the 2023 Education budget as initially proposed.

Total Budget: N1.08t
Total Capital: N239b
Total Salaries: N706b
Total Overheads: N52

I want the education bank to give loans, not pay salaries.

1.4 All the processes for submitting a loan request can be done online and have minimal human interaction; this will speed up approvals and keep operational costs low.

2. Funding is a non-starter. The N1b capital & 1% revenue heads must be more robust.

1% of N100 is more than 1% of N10, but why 1% ? Is the largest economy in Africa saying she can't allocate more to fund higher education?

Brazil did 100% of its oil royalties to education.

2.1 What other sources of revenue to boost the 1%?

Private endowments. Alumni, companies or individuals should be able to donate to the fund and earmark disbursements to a school in return for transferable tax credits.

3. I tend to stay on the financial, but some provisions in this bill are too "funny" to ignore

The Bill transfers the sins of the parent to the children. Kids can't get a loan if a parent defaults on ANY loan? How does this pass legal or even moral muster?

3.2 Jail time for failure to repay a loan?

I understand the intent of this provision is to create consequences for the premeditated loss of principal, but you don't jail former students who don't repay; instead, you blacklist their credit, so they can't get any loan.

3.3 Guarantors

By introducing guarantors, the bill introduces collateral via other means.

How many students can a lawyer or civil servant guarantee? What if I want to study medicine and score a good grade but have no one to guarantee me?

This is implicit discrimination.

Finally, we do these reviews because we love Nigeria.

My suggestions strengthen this bill by boosting funding and reducing costs and any implicit unintended bias.

let's call this a good start; this bill passed b4 this administration. Now Make it better

If the bill is updated, then I will update my post."

The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has stated that reports claiming they are planning to disrupt the inauguration ceremony of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu are false.

Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu said the family nor IPOB were not planning to disrupt the inauguration in Abia or any part of the country.

Kanu stated this while speaking in an interview with Vanguard. He insisted that those trying to link the family with such nefarious activities were simply trying to blackmail the family and the movement.

“We are not part of it. Anybody behind such a plot should count us out of it. We are not involved and we discourage such. Those doing such things are the real enemies of our people,” he said.

Kanu’s family said that mischief makers should stop using its name to create confusion or cause tension in the land, noting that the family and IPOB led by his brother believe in peace and will continue to promote peace.

Kanu said that the major preoccupation of the family is how to secure the release of Kanu, and not how to disrupt any inauguration.

Prince Emmanuel urged members of the public to disregard any rumour or social media report trying to associate Kanu’s family or IPOB with any unholy act vis-à-vis May 29 inauguration.

The United Kingdom’s recent imposition of a student visa ban on Nigerian applicants has sparked widespread concerns and debates. While this development has generated significant attention and outcry from affected students and various stakeholders, the response from the Nigerian government has been noticeably absent. In this article, we delve into the implications of the UK student visa ban and analyze the silence of the Nigerian government, shedding light on the potential reasons behind their lack of action.

Understanding the UK Student Visa Ban
The UK student visa ban refers to the recent decision by the United Kingdom government to impose restrictions on the issuance of student visas to applicants from Nigeria. This development has caused significant concern and uncertainty among Nigerian students aspiring to study in the UK. To comprehend the implications of this ban, it is essential to delve into its key aspects.

The ban primarily affects Nigerian students who intend to pursue higher education in the UK. It entails stricter criteria and higher scrutiny during the visa application process, making it more challenging for Nigerian students to obtain study visas.

The specific reasons cited by the UK government for implementing this ban may vary and could include concerns about immigration control, national security, or the need to address perceived abuse or fraudulent activities in the student visa system.

The UK student visa ban has had a direct impact on Nigerian students and their educational aspirations. Nigerian students have traditionally been one of the largest groups of international students in the UK, contributing significantly to the country’s education sector.

The ban has disrupted their academic plans, potentially leading to missed opportunities for personal and professional growth, as well as hindering the cultural exchange and diversity that Nigerian students bring to UK campuses.

Moreover, the ban has broader implications beyond individual students. The presence of international students, including Nigerians, has a considerable economic impact on the UK. These students contribute to the local economy through tuition fees, accommodation expenses, and consumer spending.

The reduction in the number of Nigerian students could have adverse consequences for the financial sustainability of educational institutions and the local communities that benefit from their presence.

The UK student visa ban also raises questions about the global mobility of students and the evolving landscape of international education. It has compelled Nigerian students to explore alternative destinations, such as Canada, Australia, or other European countries, which could potentially divert educational and economic opportunities away from the UK.

This shift in student mobility patterns may prompt the UK government to reevaluate its policies and consider the long-term consequences of the visa ban on its position as a preferred destination for international students.

In summary, the UK student visa ban targeting Nigerian applicants has caused considerable concern and uncertainty among students and stakeholders. It has disrupted the educational plans of Nigerian students and raised questions about the economic and cultural benefits they bring to the UK.

Understanding the reasons behind the ban and its implications is crucial for stakeholders, including the Nigerian government, as they navigate this complex issue and work towards a resolution that ensures the interests of Nigerian students are safeguarded.
