High-value note holders would still need to go to the CBN to deposit their old bills. According to a source from the apex bank that was reported by Punch, the CBN instructed the banks to collect the funds instead of bringing them to the CBN office due to access issues. A CBN official said, “Go to your bank but fill the form before you go. Go with your reference code you generate. With your code, banks will collect it from you. But if it is more than 500,000, you will go to the CBN and deposit it.” The CBN earlier launched a portal on its website and required those wishing to return outdated notes to fill it out and generate a number. President Muhammadu Buhari says the old N500 and N1,000 notes can be swapped at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and designated points. Speaking in a national broadcast on Thursday, the president said the old N200 note will, however, remain legal tender until April 10 when they will cease to be valid. “To further ease the supply pressures, particularly to our citizens, I have given approval to the CBN that the old N200 bank notes be released back into circulation and that it should also be allowed to circulate as legal tender with the new N200, N500, and N1000 banknotes for 60 days from February 10, 2023 to April 10, 2023 when the old N200 note ceases to be legal tender,” he said. “In line with section 20(3) of the CBN Act 2007, all existing old N1,000 and N500 notes remain redeemable at the CBN and designated points.” The president’s position is despite a ruling on a suit filed by some states challenging the naira redesign policy, in which the supreme court restrained the federal government from restricting the use of the old naira notes pending the determination of the suit. At the resumed sitting on Wednesday, Abdulhakeem Mustapha, counsel to Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara states, asked the court to make an order directing the federal government not to implement a deadline on the old naira notes. But a seven-member panel of the apex court led by John Okoro, said there was no need to issue a fresh order as “the interim order is pending the hearing on the motion on notice”. The case was thereafter adjourned till February 22. Meanwhile, the CBN had, in a circular addressed to deposit money banks (DMBs), mobile money operators (MMOs), super agents, and agents in January, announced the launch of a cash swap programme for all LGAs across the country. Super agents are companies licensed by the CBN to recruit agents for the purpose of agency banking. “The old N1000, N500, N200 notes can be exchanged for the newly redesigned notes and/or the existing lower denominations (N100, N50 and N20, etc) which remain legal tender,” the CBN had said. “The agent shall exchange a maximum of N10,000 per person. Amounts above N10,000 may be treated as cash-in deposit into wallets or bank accounts in line with the cashless policy. Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, has stirred up new controversy after she was recently in the news for the detention and alleged abuse of Aminu Mohammed, a student. Aminu, a Federal University of Dutse 500-level student, was detained by the Department of State Service (DSS) as a result of a tweet accusing Aisha Buhari, the First Lady, of diverting public funds for her own use. Aisha retracted the charges against him, nevertheless, in response to widespread uproar, and instructed security personnel to free him. The publisher of Daily Nigerian, Ja’afar Ja’afar, had, during the controversy, claimed that the first lady slipped and fractured her leg while attempting to throw a kick at the student. Ja’afar further alleged that Aminu was not arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services but by plain-clothed policemen. He had said: “It may sound like a fairy tale, but the following is actually what transpired: the duo were beaten to a pulp in the presence of Mrs. Buhari by three security aides. While Aminu and Ms. Kassim were being beaten, the First Lady felt that they were not beating them well, so she joined them. “As she attempted to throw a kick, she slipped and fractured her leg. It was the injury she suffered during the assault that took her to Cedar Crest Hospital for treatment. “While Ms. Kassim was released on the condition that she would not speak to the press, the final-year student may face trumped-up charges of defamation. This is sad for democracy.” In a new investigative report by the Foundation of Investigative Journalism (FIJ), a yet-to-be-identified lady accused Aisha Buhari of beating her up. In a snippet of the story released on Wednesday, the lady accused the First Lady of wishing she (the unknown lady) had been shot. She claimed Aisha said she was the first lady and she (the lady) could be killed and her body thrown into the lagoon. The Department of State Services (DSS) has said the former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, will appear before the agency for more questioning. Recall that Fani-Kayode, the Director of New Media Operations and Special Projects of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, was on Monday detained and grilled by the DSS over a post he made on Twitter. In a statement on Tuesday, the Public Relations Officer of DSS, Dr Peter Afunanya disclosed that the agency invited Fani-Kayode for questioning based on an investigation it is carrying out relating to issues relevant to National Security. According to the secret police, Fani-Kayode was made to face a Panel which interviewed him on the subject matter before granting him administrative bail. He said the former minister had been directed to make routine returns to the DSS with effect from Wednesday till otherwise while his investigation continues, warning political parties and their media managers to apply restraint in their utterances and public communication engagements prior to and after the general elections. Afunanya said, “The Department of State Services hereby informs the public that it invited Chief Femi Fani-Kayode to its National Headquarters, Abuja, on 13th February, 2023. The invitation was in respect of an investigation of some of his allegations and insinuations relating to issues relevant to National Security. “Chief Fani-Kayode faced a Panel which interviewed him on the subject matter. Afterwards, the Service granted him administrative bail and directed that he makes routine returns to the Office with effect from Wednesday, 15th February, 2023 till otherwise. The investigation, however, continues. “Meanwhile, political parties and their media managers are advised to apply restraint in their utterances and public communication engagements prior to and after the general elections.
